Name: Shaye
Age: 17
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual with a preference for the ladies
Weyr: High Reaches Weyr
Rider Rank: Weyrling
Previous Rank/Craft: former Apprentice Harper
Physical Description: Scruffy bad girl. 5'9"-ish, slim and hard as a razor blade, moves quick and snaky. Pale-skinned, she burns like a mofo. Sharp-featured and hawk-faced beneath shaggy straight collar-length black hair, with heavy fringe over her eyes, she's got a look that's black-eyed and intense, ice-cold, and potentially dangerous... until she turns on the thousand-watt grin or pulls a face so derpy and unexpected one can't help but be charmed by her.
She prefers to keep it simple, tunics or shirts and trousers and knee-high fur boots laced up her lower leg. Wears her wherhide flight jacket when it's cold. Almost everything she owns clothing-wise (apart from her flight leathers) is second-hand, sometimes ratty round the edges but clean and presentable. She does polish up nicely for Gathers, though, even if she has to borrow a dress. Her boots are the nicest things she has that she acquired on her own. Her favorite color is black.
Personality: A raging a*****e in shining armor. Shaye can be a fierce defender of those she considers friends one minute, the class clown the next, and a complete jerk the next. This girl is as unpredictable and mercurial as the wind -- one never really knows what to expect from her. And she likes it that way. She is quick-witted, even if her intelligence is fairly average; she can wriggle out of a predicament like a tunnelsnake and come out of it without a scratch on her. So what if the others who got sucked in by her whirlwind temperament end up with the scars?
Shaye has never encountered a fight she didn't want to be involved in. She can be impossibly stubborn and belligerent when it comes to conflict, whether it's fighting Thread or engaging in a verbal battle with a wingmate. Her temper is pretty bad, despite the training she's received designed to help keep it in check; she won't pull a weapon on an opponent, or even engage in fisticuffs (at least not any longer), but her tongue is sharp and she has no bones about being cruel. All's fair in love and war, right?
Truth is, Shaye is a fairly lonely girl. Her self-confidence was shattered when she was thrown out of Harper Hall, and the psychological scarring from that has never healed. So she hides it from her fellows, using her acting out and smart mouth and overall foul temperament like armor. Occasionally her soft interior will show, when she's playing one of the few songs she knows on her gitar or harp. Moments like those, however, are few and far between, as she rarely plays in public.
She is ridiculously protective of her friends, becoming their self-appointed knight defender when any of them are attacked in any way. While others might see her as something of an ill-tempered wher, her friends tend to see her as their savior. And actually, that's how she'd ultimately like to be perceived. She is just really bad at it.
Positive Trait List quick-witted, protective, ambitious, courageous, tenacious
Negative Trait List mercurial, temperamental, aggressive, smart-mouthed, secretly lacks confidence
History: Shaye is from a small hold somewhere in High Reaches territory. The youngest of three children, the other two being boys, she was basically considered a useless child by her socially ambitious parents. Left to run riot on her own, she acted out against her brothers and fought a lot with the other kids in the hold. Shaye had her favorites, though, and to them she was a defender. She had the desire to someday be a professional warrior, protecting the downtrodden from unscrupulous people. Ultimately her parents' ambitions overcame her own and she was sent to Harper Hall at 10 to get her out of the hold and earn the family some prestige.
Her apprenticeship didn't last very long. Shaye was kicked out of Harper Hall at 13 due to her bad temper and stubborn aggression, and was sent home. This was her first real failure, and she was rather devastated, her confidence utterly shaken. But she didn't want it to show, because that would be admitting defeat. So she became even more belligerent and troublesome, her mood changing with the wind and no way to predict what she was going to do or say next. Her parents were at a loss as to what to do with her besides marry her off -- but who would have a hellion like Shaye?
The problem was ultimately solved for them when, to everyone's surprise, she was Searched at 15 by a bluerider from High Reaches Weyr. Shaye was gladly sent off to the Weyr, and she gladly went without even bothering to pack her clothes or anything. She has actually taken well to life as a Candidate; it seemed a little structure was just what she needed. That and the fact she doesn't want to fail again.
Other: She still plays gitar and harp pretty well, though she has a limited repertoire. She rarely plays in public.
