He was alone.

It felt like a normal state of mind these days. There had been days in the past where Thrymr had felt the need to always be around someone else, around people, around those he cared for; but those days were long gone. They were replaced by a hollowed out sensation somewhere in side of his chest; an ache that couldn't be soothed by any method he could think of.

The city was never a quiet place, even on the fringes of it. Instead, it bustled with chaos and laughter and noise, the screech of tires, the sharp blare of impatient horns, the babble of voices, the tinkling of bells as doors were open and the thud of footsteps across the pavement. It was all familiar, achingly, painfully so; as though in all the months he had been away, Thrymr had forgotten what it was to be around life.

He sat now on a low wall at the top of a hill that overlooked the majority of downtown Destiny City. It was just on the outskirts, not outside the city lines, nor far enough away not to see or hear anything; but just far away enough to feel as though he wasn't quite a part of it anymore. Thrymr had one leg pulled up to his chest, arms wrapped around it, his chin resting on his knee.

Just watching. Just wondering.

He felt, as he always did these days, off kilter and off balance. He had no way of fixing it, Thrymr knew, not unless he could take a magic wand and somehow reverse all of the mistakes he'd made. But that would have been the cheater's way out, the coward's way out; he did not deserve to pretend he was worth otherwise, but he had made his choices. Now he had to live with them.

Thrymr let out a soft breath of air. A stray, warm breeze ghosted past, rifling the white locks around his face, growing longer, past his shoulders now. He closed his eyes, just breathing.

Just listening.

He appeared only a short distance away from a sickeningly bright aura. It seemed to knock the breath from his lungs as he turned to try and determine just where the senshi was. Teleporting always came with that risk - to show up close to one’s enemy, but Kamacite was usually able to predict where people would rather not be.

Not tonight though. Instead, he could see the white through the trees that grew along the outskirts of the city. He’d hoped to get away from the bright lights for a little while, but it seemed as though he might be forced to fight.

No, he wouldn’t use more of his energy to teleport unless he had to. He could disappear long enough to power down.

But… it didn’t seem as though the other was trying to head towards him like those of the White Moon often did.

Kamacite swallowed, trying to convince his curiosity that this was a horrible idea, that he should turn and leave before it was too late. He’d had too many close calls already.

The sudden appearance of the Chaos aura nearly took Thrymr's breath away.

After the initial shock of it, however, it seemed to ebb a little, and Thrymr inhaled slowly, then exhaled, letting it wash over him. It was all too familiar, in a sense; a tangle of emotions threatened him with a momentary desire to run, but he was too tired for that, and too alone.

He always ran away. Running away was easier.

Running away didn't hurt as much.

Something - or rather, someone - was only a short distance away from him. These auras were good for some things; they were useful energy signatures that could alert to danger, but also bad for anything if you wanted to be subtle or unnoticed. Thrymr tilted his head, a stray strand of white hair falling across a pale, freckled cheek as he tried to make out who it was in the darkness.

He should be more cautious. He didn't feel like it tonight.

"Don't worry," said Thrymr, voice rising a little, still remaining where he was without getting up. "I'm not going to hurt you, whoever you are."

The voice stopped him, curiosity getting the better of him despite his efforts to ignore the desire to see who was lurking in the woods.

“Why should I believe you,” Kamacite responded, shifting from one foot to the other. And then took a few cautious steps forward to push aside the brush that obscured the view of each other.

A man with white hair, a stark contrast to his own flowing black hair, was sitting on a low wall that overlooked the city.

“Kamacite,” he offered with a nod, wondering why this man would be telling him he wouldn’t hurt him, and not immediately trying to attack.

Kamacite took another step forward, only for his hair to be caught in the bramble. He winced at the tug, and turned to try and pull it free without making it too noticeable. Only for his robes to be caught and pulled on as well. Fantastic. He supposed he could just teleport if necessary, but it was such an exhaustive use of energy.

The faintest of smiles tugged at Thrymr's lips.

"I don't have the energy," he said truthfully. "Or the willingness. I'm not a fighter. I never have been."

The accent had faded a lot over his cumulative years spent in the states and then back in France again before he'd finally come to Destiny City once and for all, but it was still there in the curving of syllables and the rounding of vowels, the slightly sharper edges to words that started and ended in "s." Thrymr watched the other approach, his gaze not lowering, but not quite staring either; a calm and unhurried examination of who was now coming up towards him.

A corrupted senshi, as dark as Thrymr was light, long hair spilling down his back in elegant waves like a black river. His uniform was unconventional, but somehow exploding in color; a burst of oranges and yellows and purples that seemed almost too curious for a Negaverse senshi.

Thrymr's faint smile was still on his face. "Thrymr," he said, with a slight nod of greeting. "Of Aurora Australis, if that means anything."

The Southern Lights. His bright stars.

The blue eyes flickered a little as Kamacite swayed slightly, and it took Thrymr a moment to realize that he was tangled in branches. Rising to his feet, he padded over quietly, stretching out a cautious hand.

"I promise I'm not going to do anything," he said softly, and then carefully tugged at the fabric that was caught in the brambles, disentangling the slippery, silken fabric with nimble fingers.

Not a fighter, huh? Kamacite watched warily as the other rose to his feet when he realized Kamacite had his hair and clothing tangled in the branches. He was offering to help him?

Perhaps he should have been more cautious. Maybe he should have teleported right then and left this ridiculously peaceful conversation, but he couldn’t quite shake hearing Thrymr’s accent. Or his own curiosity.

He didn’t return with his own magical sphere, knowing it would be useful to have an advantage if he was attacked, but he allowed the other to reach out and help him. Even if he took a nervous step away from him.

They were the same height, he noted, and roughly the same build. Neither of them were fighters, and he was sure Thrymr realized that by now. Still, Kamacite wasn’t stupid. He knew what those of the White Moon were capable of doing.

“Merci beaucoup,” Kamacite said quietly, curiously, as the fabric was gently removed from the bramble and his hair was freed from the untrimmed bushes. His own accent had been washed away with years of practice and a particular talent for language. A wasted talent, probably, but it was helpful when he wanted to blend in despite looking like an outsider.

Up close, the senshi couldn't be much older than Thrymr's own twenty-two, almost twenty-three. In fact, he looked slightly younger, but that might have been the wary, uncertain look in his eyes, the anxious, instinctive way in which he drew back even from Thrymr's gentle, non intrusive touch.

Thrymr had never really been the nervous sort, only the sort that had put their heart on their sleeve and watch it been crushed into dust.

He tried not to think about that now, because there was little point in dwelling on things he couldn't change. His hands worked efficiently and quickly, careful not to snag the beautiful fabric, and then at last, Kamacite was free, his long dark hair still a black river, glossy and elegant.

Thrymr stepped back, took a pace away to keep the distance between them, hands rising in a gesture of non-aggression with his palms facing out before he dropped them again. The brief, lilting gratitude in a language that Thrymr knew better than any other made his head rise, however, and a small smile tugged at his lips.

"De rien," he answered, almost unthinkingly, because his thoughts were already mostly in French rather than English. "I have no desire to fight you, only to..."

He had no idea. Talk? He had been alone on this hill otherwise, and hadn't expected any company, but now that someone was here...well, that someone was on the wrong side of things, but Kamacite didn't appear to be the unreasonably aggressive sort. You could never really tell, in all honesty, but if he'd had to guess, it would have been that.

"Would you like to talk a little?" Thrymr asked.

Kamacite took another step back to place distance between himself and the White Moon senshi, his hands instinctively lifting to tug nervously at the fabric over his chest, as though trying to hide the strange hole as well as keep his heart from beating right out of it.

No, Thrymr didn’t look threatening, but neither did many others. They were still capable of just as many horrible things as the Negaverse.

Talk? That’s what Thrymr said, right? Kamacite bit anxiously at his bottom lip, not sure about this at all. It could be a trap. Or he could get in trouble for not immediately trying to take this senshi’s starseed. But Thrymr was more powerful, even Kamacite knew that. Even if he tried to fight him, he doubted he would come out of it victorious.

Unless he was incredibly lucky.

At least Thrymr wasn’t behaving in a threatening enough manner for Kamacite to use his attack and try to escape, unlike his first encounter with Aue when the senshi of lemons still wore white.

It was Aue’s own fault for cornering him when he was clearly frightened.

“What would you like to talk about?” he asked quietly, still feeling stiff and uncomfortable and on edge.

But if necessary, he would just blind Thrymr and teleport away.

He didn't try to close the distance, or make any move that indicated he was offended by Kamacite moving farther away from him. Instead, Thrymr's gaze was merely a little curious, something else flickering in his blue eyes; an almost wistful expression, bordering on sad. The lines of his face were sharper than they had been, cheeks more hollow; the dark circles under his eyes were more pronounced, and he'd lost weight he hadn't had in the first place. He was still slender and graceful, but there was an almost ragged edge to him now.

He did not have much left, after all. Thrymr's shoulders rose and fell in a shrug that was almost as fluid as one of his dancer's moves, taking a few steps back towards the wall he'd been sitting on before Kamacite had come along. He pushed back and hopped up onto it, bending over so that his elbows could rest on his knees, chin propped in his hands.

"Je ne sais pas," he said lightly. "The world. The city. Whether or not dogs are better than cats. Whatever you'd like."

Kamacite lifted his arms and tucked one under the other, folding them comfortably into the sleeves of his robes as he watched Thrymr make his way back to the wall he’d been sitting on before he’d arrived. He couldn’t tell if Thrymr was thinking too deeply about things, or just staring out at the city. It was as though he felt no threat of a negaverse senshi standing so close. Either he was stupid or just didn’t care.

“Typically the topic of conversation begins with the one who suggested talking in the first place,” Kamacite said quietly as he watched the strange senshi on the wall. He couldn’t quite place the accent. Thrymr didn’t sound like he was from south France, but without hearing him speak more, Kamacite wasn’t sure.

Probably Parisian.

He was so tired.

Tired of the way that he felt. Tired of the way that he always seemed to be on the wrong side of everyone. Tired of the idea that he had done what he had believed to be the right thing at the time, only to have it twisted into something convoluted and messy and wrong, as though he'd been deliberately out to disappoint.

He could not bear the disappointment. It hurt worse than the anger did.

Thrymr's hands had both moved to the edge of the wall on either side of him, fingers curling over the roughly hewn edge. He turned his head to look at Kamacite, the other's voice a soft and gentle thing; almost as soft as Thrymr's was on a normal basis, and he looked...well, not exactly at ease. But less anxious, perhaps.

Or maybe it was just his imagination. Maybe this was his problem: seeing things that other people didn't. Making up the answer to scenarios in his head instead of understanding what was right in front of him, or right there for him to grasp, at any rate.

"All right," said Thrymr lightly. "Tell me what you think about dogs."

How it must be nice to not have to worry about anyone but themselves. The White Moon had nothing to work towards, no goals, no duties to perform. They were able to sit around and casually chat with anyone who happened to cross their path.

But Kamacite knew he was lucky to have stumbled on a non-aggressive senshi, as opposed to one that would immediately try to kill him. Maybe there was just too much of a difference between them to really understand one another.

“High maintenance,” he replied just as quietly as before, his arms still crossed, although he took a moment to tug at his robes, trying to keep warm against the cool night wind.

“Require too much attention,” Kamacite offered, trying to keep his mind from wandering towards his General for an example. “Cats are too independent. They don’t give enough attention. Both ruin furniture and create unnecessary messes. And they’re expensive to care for.”

“You seem like you’d be a dog person,” he said after a few moments of thought. “You asked about them first, and you’d rather sit and talk instead of fight. Am I wrong?”

Thrymr wore no gloves; he could feel the hard, crumbling rock beneath his fingers, the bite of the brick against his palms, scratching the fine skin. He had always been not quite delicate, but easy to burn, easy to blush, everything written on his face and everything out in the open. He did not have the sort of work roughened hands most dancers had, even after all these years.

A laugh escaped, gentle. Thrymr turned his head to look at Kamacite, eyes a little amused, in spite of the dark circles beneath them.

"A fair observation," he said, head tilted so that a few strands of pale white hair fell across his forehead. "Though I'm really more of an animal person altogether. I like both dogs and cats, but cats are a little less easy to carry around when you just want to go out."

He craned his head back to stare up at the sky above them, gaze slightly unfocused.

"I do like dogs, though. At the very least, they're companions to you even when you have none. And no," Thrymr added, without lowering his head, eyes tracing some of the patterns in the stars. "You're not wrong. I suppose I could fight. I probably should. But I'm just..."

He trailed off, feeling the ache in his bones.

"...too tired, perhaps. There's too much I've lost already."

Too easy.

There was this senshi here, not fighting, having a conversation with him, sounding tired and looking worn.

The glow and sickeningly sweet aura kept Kamacite from trying to reach in and grab the senshi’s starseed right then and there. No, it was too easy. And that glow… he knew enough to know these would be more difficult than others to take their starseed. If that was even possible. He could kill him then. But that wasn’t Kamacite’s way. A death meant nothing when there was no starseed or energy to offer. It would be a waste.

Part of him felt a little annoyed at this passive person. How did this senshi survive for so long when he had such a weepy voice and demeanor. Was this how Kamacite looked to others? He knew he seemed frail, but he was training. He was trying to overcome all of that.

No further questions were asked. Kamacite remained silent. He wasn’t much of a conversationalist to begin with. If anything, he should take this opportunity to take his leave.

And yet.

“Why do it then? If you have no one. If you’ve lost so much. Why would you bother with those clothes and your powers? The White Moon are disorganized and little more than children. You have no purpose. So why bother?”

Kamacite supposed this made him more of a cat person… Curiosity, after all.

Thrymr was watching the other with a look that was part curiosity, part weariness, part bemusement, as though he couldn't quite discern what he was doing. Kamacite was quiet while he spoke; he did not seem the talkative sort, which was fine; considering they were on opposite sides of the war, it was clear that he mistrusted him, and that was fine too. Thrymr wasn't here to be trusted.

He wasn't actually sure why he was here at all, anymore.

Kamacite's questions brought him back into his own thoughts, which wasn't pleasant. Thrymr considered them with a hollow sort of look, a faint smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. It was as though they had lost whatever emotion had once been there.

"You're not wrong," he said softly. "They are very disorganized and sometimes we forget what we're actually fighting for, I think."

And what they were meant to do. What they were meant to be. Even Thrymr had no idea what that was anymore, his present day thoughts twisting with the ones from his past curling together unpleasantly, with about as much clarity as muddy waters.

"Habit," said Thrymr. "Or maybe...waiting to see if something changes. So perhaps you're right, perhaps I don't have a purpose yet. Maybe I'll find one when I'm out looking for a bit of hope."

His pale brows rose. "Why do you bother?"
