Caspian was on a mission and that mission involved having an actual date night with his husband.

They'd surpassed the year anniversary since they'd gotten married, which should have been a monumental occasion - and it was, and they both knew it - but they had also both been too busy to actually celebrate properly. Michael had been going to his classes, and Caspian had been studying for finals, and they both had been patrolling on and off (though not as much recently) and before Caspian had realized it, it was summertime and they still hadn't managed to get a good night to themselves. A proper celebration, with all of the romantic crap that still made Caspian's heart flutter stupidly inside of his chest. A year of marriage and two years of being together had not changed the fact that Michael was still capable of taking Caspian's breath away or that Caspian was still both: a) lucky to even be alive and b) lucky to have found someone to put up with all of his s**t.

And vice versa. Hence Caspian's overwhelming determination to have a night to themselves and have a damn good night to themselves.

He sat now in the living room, feet propped up on the coffee table, dressed in one of Michael's oversized shirts and a pair of shirts, a pillow hugged to his chest. Caspian was squinting at his phone, typing out a message to his wayward husband.

Text to Michael:

are you gonna be home soon?

It wasn’t that he disliked being around people, it just depended on why he was around them. As it were, he had been invited to go to some study sessions with his classmates. And he enjoyed them. Being able to talk and discuss things in a group setting was one of the things he missed about teaching.

He was almost surprised that he missed teaching. He thought he’d been pretty darn good at teaching, even if he only had an elective and didn’t have an actual license. But when you taught for a private school, there weren’t as many rules and regulations that needed to be followed.

He was in the middle of saying goodnight to his classmates when he got the text from Caspian.

Quote:
Text to Caspian:

Heading home now. Eta maybe ten minutes.

He felt bad for leaving Caspian on his own, but it wasn’t as though Caspian couldn’t hang out with his own friends or classmates. Besides, it just gave them more to talk about when they weren’t together all the time.

He was a little pleased that Michael had actually gone out with people, mostly because Michael's tendency to keep to himself had been a starting point in their relationship as it was; and besides that, Caspian liked hearing about all of his school life goings on. Domestic silliness or not, it was a highlight; it was the fact that it was such a domestic and relaxed and normal thing that made it as good as it was, because it was something Caspian had never had before.

He heard his phone ding and stretched out a hand towards it, plucking it from the couch to slide a thumb across the screen. The messenger app popped up, a tiny thumbnail of Michael and Caspian on Michael's boat appearing, their faces squished together, Caspian smiling, Michael looking slightly exasperated, but his eyes were amused. It was the picture he used for Michael's contact information, and Caspian grinned at it before tapping the message.

Ten minutes. Okay, so he just had to be ready in ten minutes. Which, considering he was currently sitting on the couch in a pair of shorts and Michael's shirt was possibly a stretch, but other than that he was ready. Caspian slid off the couch and hastily scampered to the bedroom.

A few minutes later, he reemerged, hair a little damp from a quick run through of water, and this time in a pair of black skinny jeans and a dark blue shirt that was slightly too large and spangled with stars. Caspian flopped back onto the couch again and gathered his pillow back into his arms, stretching out to wait.

Michael got a text back that was just a series of the heart kissy face emojis.

Michael didn’t bother responding to the series of emojis, but instead shook his head in exasperated amusement, like he almost always was around Caspian. Besides, he was just getting out of his car and heading towards the door, so a text back would be pointless.

“Hey,” he greeted as he opened the door and set his book bag down. “Sorry that took so long. I thought we’d be done sooner,” Michael said as he knelt down to untie his shoes and slip them off. He wore dark blue, bootcut jeans and a light blue and white striped shirt that had the long sleeves rolled up to his elbows and top couple buttons undone.

He had to reach up to push his hair back as he stood, moving it out of his face. It had grown longer than he’d ever had it, even if it was still relatively short by many standards. Just not a military or business executive short like he’d had it before.

“What have you been up to?” he asked, eyeing Caspian somewhat suspiciously when he noticed that his husband was not in shorts and an oversized shirt, like he would have expected him to be.

Caspian's face lit up at the sight of Michael, eyes taking in the rolled up sleeves and the undone collar with a certain amount of interest and appreciation.

It was a very good look for him, that was for sure. Caspian was trying not to be distracted, but he rose to his feet and sailed over to his husband anyway, hands coming to rest on Michael's waist as he stretched up on tiptoe to kiss him the way he always did when he'd been out. Being unencumbered with great height as he was, it always took a bit of reaching and Michael bending down to make this work properly.

"Welcome home," Caspian said, smiling happily. "Don't look at me like that, I've been just hanging out most of the day. Classes got cancelled in favor of the professor having some sort of crisis, so I studied for a bit and then practiced and then came home."

He was still holding onto Michael's shirt, fingers curling in the sides of it as Caspian looked up at him, at the long tendrils of his auburn hair. Caspian's own hair was still a little damp from his shower.

"And...well, I thought we could, you know. Do something nice tonight. Like...go out."

He blinked up at Michael expectantly, feeling strangely uncertain, a little hesitant.

"Like. A date. You know. That thing couples do. Uh. With me."

”Look at you like what?” Michael feigned innocence as he leaned down to return Caspian’s kiss, his own hands reaching down to hold his husband’s in place against his waist. “Look at you like… you’re up to something?” he asked with a teasing grin, only to snort softly in amusement when sure enough, Caspian revealed his ideas for the night.

“Like… go out?” he repeated, lightly mocking if only because Caspian always seemed so hesitant when it came to things like this. As though he was afraid Michael would tell him no, or that it was a stupid idea. Michael tried not to take it personally, even though he had no idea why Caspian would feel that way.

Or at least act as though he felt that way. He couldn’t remember ever turning Caspian down for something like this, but perhaps it was some lingering self-doubt that hung around even after everything they’d been through together.

“That thing couples do? With you?? Wow, I thought you were going to suggest I go out on a date with someone else. What a surprise,” he teased, sliding his hands up Caspian’s arms so he could reach down and gently dig his fingers into his husband’s ticklish sides.

“Hmm, I’ll have to check my schedule,” he said using one arm to wrap around Caspian’s shoulders to pull him against his chest so he couldn't squirm away, and lifted his right arm to look at his completely normal watch, as though it would be able to pull up his emails and schedule like a smart watch would.

“I’ll have to tell my secretary to cancel my nine o’clock, and move my eleven thirty meeting to another day, but I can probably squeeze you in for a few hours tonight. Or maybe even the rest of the night,” he said with a half grin, his eyes sparkling mischievously despite Caspian’s uncertainty. “I’ll just have to move that early morning board meeting to the afternoon. Sure, the board of directors will grumble about it, but they can kiss my a**.”

"Looking at me like I'm getting into trouble," Caspian said dryly, feeling Michael's hands come to rest over his own. It was a warm and tingly feeling; he loved those strong, sure fingers, how much larger they were than his own, and yet how they could be as gentle and as tender as they were now.

And other things. Things he was not going to get distracted about right now.

Caspian leaned forward, playfully poking his head against Michael's broad chest. "Yes, go out - " he started to say, and then squawked a little as Michael's hands dug into his sides, trying to squirm out of reach without actually breaking away from him. "And no, I was not going to suggest that, thank you very much, Mr. Lyons-Gallo."

He caught his breath again, grinning up at Michael, but it turned into a look of exasperation, which was then muffled against Michael's chest as he was dragged forward, Caspian letting out a small oof. He tried in vain to push away, but considering the fact that his husband was a foot taller and much broader in all aspects, it was kind of like trying to push against a brick wall.

A very attractive, very appealing brick wall. Caspian's hands came to rest on Michael's hips, the rest of him slumping bonelessly against him, a limp noodle in his husband's grasp.

"You know, I'm starting to think you're actually a wisecracker in disguise," he said, voice muffled into Michael's shirtfront. "Your board of directors can kiss my a** too. Are you making fun of me, Sir Gallo?"

It was hard not to be charmed. Caspian was fighting a smile.

“You’re just now starting to think that?” Michael chuckled softly as he lowered his right arm. “Maybe you’re just rubbing off on me,” he suggested. That wasn’t exactly the case. Yes, he was able to open up more around Caspian, but he wasn’t always just a grump.

“Alright troublemaker, what did you have in mind for this date?” he asked, lifting a hand to fondly ruffle Caspian’s damp hair. “Dinner? A movie? Bowling? A café for coffee?” he offered, just in case Caspian needed a little help. It wasn’t that he didn’t think Caspian didn’t think things through before doing them but… look before you leap wasn’t really something Caspian was known for.

“Obviously not stay home, otherwise you wouldn’t have bothered getting dressed,” he pointed out with a grin. He fully expected Caspian to be in pajamas by this point, but the fact that he’d taken a shower and gotten dressed meant he was serious about it.

"Actually, I started to think that back when you recited poetry to me," Caspian said. Michael had given him enough space that he could look up again now, hands still resting on his husband's hips, a grin touching his lips. "That was pretty damn charming."

So was holding him while he'd cried, and kissing him when he was grumpy and offering him his jacket without a word when he was cold. Michael was not just a grump to him, even if he'd started off thinking that way - and granted he could be stubborn and irate, but, well. So could Caspian. And he knew what sort of person Michael was past the stoic exterior, which made all the difference in the world.

He raised his eyebrows. "Maybe I just wanted to look cute for my husband," said Caspian lightly, which was sort of true, but also because Michael was right; he did plan on them going out, even if it was also true that Caspian tended not to think things through before actually doing them.

Except this time, for once, he had.

Mostly.

"I've got some ideas," he said playfully, grinning up at Michael. "Wanna go get changed or are you gonna wear that?"

That I did always love I bring thee proof that till I loved I never lived,” Michael grinned and then leaned down to steal a quick kiss before pulling back. “I still recite poetry to you.”

He had pulled back enough by then that he could step around Caspian and head towards the bedroom.

“Some ideas, huh? Hopefully none that will land us in a hospital,” Michael teased as he crossed through to the bedroom and towards the closet. One of their date nights had ended up with Michael’s starseed almost taken, and Caspian bleeding out. They were lucky then, but Michael wasn’t stupid enough to push that luck.

His husband, on the other hand…

Michael reemerged with a starry patterned tie hanging loosely over his shoulders as he reached up to button his shirt up all the way and lift the collar.

“Hope you don’t mind me roughing it tonight,” he winked and flipped one end of the tie over the other so he could knot it properly. The two of them together were eccentric enough that they really shouldn’t need to worry about appearances.

“Ready when you are. Need me to drive?”

Caspian's cheeks turned a little pink.

"Yes, and I - " he started to say, but Michael kissed him and then slipped around him to head to the bedroom, Caspian's hands dropping away somewhat reluctantly. " - like that you do," he finished, sounding both amused, and slightly flustered. There was something about the lilting stanzas of a poem spoken in Michael's deep, comforting voice that always seemed to throw Caspian off balance a little.

"Not this time," he yelled after Michael, Caspian sitting down on the couch in order to pull on his shoes. "I plan on this being a totally hospital-free experience, complete with doctor-free after party plans."

Hopefully. He did not want a repeat of the last time they had tried to go out.

Caspian was standing back up by the time Michael returned, looking as handsome as ever, though now with the addition of the tie. Caspian gave a little wolf whistle, just because he could, and then added, before he could stop himself, and with the faux doe-eyed innocence that fooled approximately nobody, "I never mind you being a little rough."

He reached out a hand, grinning, and tugged affectionately at Michael's tie before letting go again.

"Can we take the bike?"

He never drove if he could help it, mostly because he didn't actually like driving. Caspian was perfectly content with letting Michael take the reigns on that one. Or in this case, the wheel.
