Physical Description: Barely hitting 4'9", it's clear that Arlie has seen better days. She has short, uneven dark brown hair, and a gangly, pale look that points to malnourishment. Her eyes are an equally dark brown, ever shifting and watery. There are a few scars on her from the rough journey to High Reaches, the oldest of which is that the first nub of her right hand's ring finger is missing.
Personality: Arlie is a broken doll who fears no-one wants to play with her anymore. Having faced an obscenely difficult time growing up, rather than maturing into a person of her own, she has instead clung to her older sister, Haveli, and become a loyal subordinate to her own fate. Even now in her late teens, her personal tastes and opinions seem too childish for someone her age, preferring to play silly games and latch onto toys and tell fantastical stories with simple ends--anything to ignore the real world. That isn't to say that she neglects her duties--growing up on a farm quickly instilled a rigid order to following the rules--but it's clear that Arlie's otherwise sealed tight self is best approached like someone would a scared child.
One wouldn't know it upon first impression, though. She smiles often and is a soft, kind girl who just seems a bit shy is all. A people-pleaser through and through, anyone she calls a friend will find she will do anything, anything to please them. Paradoxically, this means that while she wouldn't trust a stranger, she'll always believe whatever a friend says, even if they've lied in the past. She is the tool of another's whim and one who has accepted her role as a secondary person. Her own wants, interests, and needs tend to reflect whoever she's around, making her palatable but also bland. She's much too afraid of sticking out, even as her heart yearns to have individuality as she grows. Delegating decisions to her sister has worked out well so far, so clearly she shouldn't be in charge of anything.
Seeing the world as she had has skewed her perception of it into something more frightening than it is. Strangers are avoided beyond simple pleasantries, the same paths and schedule must be maintained or else the world will fall apart, and even talking can sometimes be hard for Arlie. It's hard for her to make friends because she expects they will grow sick of her eventually, or find someone better; only Haveli has ever been her constant. As such, she's hard-pressed to grow into her own and will need a lot of patience and work before she can branch out and become the young woman she wants to be. Some might say she's even self-defeatist, sabotaging herself so that she can't risk succeeding and being given extra responsibility she doesn't think she deserves.
But oh does she have a big heart on that torn sleeve of hers. In spite of her cold shoulder to the unknown, even a shred of kindness is enough to make her follow after you. Her mind says she isn't worth the world, but her heart longs to be close to others. This push and pull can make her seem mercurial and fair-weather, fear sometimes overruling everything else. Arlie still loves, though, for better or for worse.
There's just one thing, however: whatever her sister says goes, no matter what. Haveli knows best, after all.

History: Life on a farm made sense to Arlie. You woke up early each day and had a set list of tasks to complete, with animals she knew, helped by people she loved. There was a strained relationship with the weyrs and their tithing, as her father never believed Thread would return and saw it as them simply preying on an old oath. Arlie certainly never thought the world would change as drastically as it did when the silver menace fell.
The family's stock was devastated in the fall, thrusting them into a level of poverty that would ruin them. Her father fell into drinking, cursing the weyrs for not giving them the protection they promised for so long, and her mother quite simply turned inward as a defense mechanism against their fate; the children as a result suffered abuses that neither sibling is willing to talk about to this day. Arlie would have quite simply died of neglect if her older sister, Haveli, hadn't decided enough was enough and taken her when she ran away.
The sisters wandered Pern and managed to live by the kindness of strangers and Haveli's willingness to do whatever it took to bring them food and shelter. She all but bribed a dragonrider after being accidentally searched at a hold to bring Arlie with her, unwilling to be separated. She was later given candidacy at the weyr, but to this day the little one isn't certain she deserves it. They now sit at High Reaches, with Arlie forever in her sister's debt--and perhaps forever to be her shadow.
