Name: Willim
Age: 19 (Nameday: 3554.12.08 )
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: LURVES THE LADIES <3
Craft: Brewer
Rank: N/A
Location: High Reaches Weyr

Physical Description: Willim is one of those men who will end up looking forever 16 years old, no matter what age he is. Topping off at around 5'8", he's built slim and compact, toned beneath his fair, lightly tanned skin. He moves with an underlying energy no matter what he's doing, almost like he's about to spring into a bouncing dance at any moment. He's very light on his feet, with quick reflexes and an excellent sense of balance, and is deceptively strong. His features have that just-hit-manhood-yesterday youthfulness to them: a strong, slightly dimpled chin with the tiniest little scraggly patch of goatee that's just long enough to grab, strong straight nose, and a firm full-lipped mouth that produces the BEST HAPPYFACE SMILE EVER. His eyes are the color of a nice, rich dark amber ale, almond-shaped with slight epicanthic folds, and topped with dark, very slightly arched eyebrows. Straight hair with a natural off-center-to-the-right part and a warm sable brown-black in color frames his face and hangs to the middle of his back; he pulls it into a ponytail when he's doing chores or whatever, but lets it hang loose most other times. There are almost always a few stray strands in his face, though, regardless of whether he's got it under control overall or not.

Willim's clothing largely consists of simple shirts and vests and loose comfortable trousers tucked into warm heavy boots, all in neutral colors. He also has some nicer clothes for when the occasion demands dressing up a bit more. Once he's a weyrling and gets his flight kit, he'll wear his goggles constantly like a fashion accessory, pulled up over his head like a headband.

Personality: Willim comes across like a little kid eternally dancing and laughing in the sunlight, delighted with life and living it to the fullest. He's not a terribly complicated individual, really -- for the most part, what you see with him is what you get. There is a sense of childlike innocence about him, and in truth, he is a bit on the naive side; he genuinely believes in the basic goodness of people, and trusts them to ultimately do the right thing (he doesn't trust them too far, however -- he may be naive, but he's not stupid). His natural tendency is to look on the bright side of everything, take life's lemons and make metaphorical lemonade out of them.

Family means the world to him, whether it's his blood family or his family of choice. He's very much the type of person who's a "herd beast" by nature, at least in the sense of needing a mob of people, preferably friends and/or family, around him. He doesn't have the follow-the-crowd herd mentality, though -- more than capable of thinking for himself, he just isn't so good at doing without others to do with. This actually makes him an excellent team member who puts the good of the group above his own needs. His fellow Candidates (and ultimately his fellow Weyrlings and wingmates) fill the family role nicely at the Weyr.

And in the context of family, his role is that of the Little Brother, both for good and ill. The "good" comes in the form of his light-hearted, youthful exuberance and his fierce loyalty to his friends and family. The "ill" is that he's a brat; he's got a history of deliberately pulling s**t to get his brothers in trouble when they were growing up, and while he'll spare his friends the worst of it, they shouldn't think they're entirely exempt just because there's no blood-tie there. He is an expert at playing up the "little and innocent" routine when it serves his purpose, like staying out of trouble or getting the advantage of someone in a dispute. And even when it's obvious that he's pulling one's chain (and it often is), the fact that he's so darn cute about it usually saves his butt.

Despite being such a little brat, Willim is honest to a fault, even in circumstances where honesty isn't necessarily the best policy. He's an absolutely crap liar, incapable of pulling off more than little white lies or deceptions in the context of pulling someone's chain -- his "tells" usually give him away, or at least give the listener a clue that he's not being completely up-front about things. He feels genuinely bad when someone gets hurt by his antics and will bend over backwards to make up for it somehow.

In the field of romance, as in everything he does, he's a playful flirt. Which means that if you're female, you're pretty much fair game. Despite how it may sound, Willim is more than happy to let the ladies call the shots, in the game of flirting as well as just about everywhere else. Chivalric in the old Earth sense, he treats every woman like a lady, regardless of her station in life, whether she's Weyrwoman or a drudge, a Lady Holder or a maidservant. He also cannot abide seeing a woman (or anyone, really) in trouble, and will leap to said lady's defense without a second thought, even if she's perfectly capable of defending herself.

Not like he needs an excuse to get into a fight with someone. He's a hothead with a very short fuse, and it really takes very little to goad him into a physical altercation. Willim is about as dirty a fighter as you'll come across, too; his favorite tactic by far is head-butting. He is completely unafraid and not at all intimidated by opponents who are bigger than he is -- metaphorically speaking, he's got BIG BRASS BALLS, and he'll take on all comers. He doesn't always start fights, but he'll by Faranth finish 'em. And when he does start a fight, it's very often because of something he said; when the testosterone and adrenaline are flowing freely, he's a blunt, pugnacious little s**t.

Positive Trait List fearless, chivalric, playful, big on family, loyal, team player, honest (in that it's hard for him to lie)
Negative Trait List hot-headed, combative, a herd beast, a brat, a hella flirt, naive, honest (in that he's not exactly the most tactful soul)

History: Willim comes from a family of home brewers based in Ruatha Hold. Originally refugees from Bitra, they came west to Ruatha when Willim was a wee babbin, setting up a pub with their meager savings in order to continue their livelihood of making beer. Willim and his two older brothers grew up in the pub, working from almost as soon as he could walk and hold a beer mug. He and his brothers did everything in the pub as kids, from server to barback. It was an interesting life for young Willim, with people from all walks of life coming in for a drink. The sociable little boy made friends with whomever he met. When he reached an age where he wasn't going to hurt himself, his parents taught him how to brew beer, and he began playing with his own recipes; he still loves to make his favorite, a strong red ale.

He also grew up around dragons, since Ruatha was full of them. Willim was fascinated with the big beasts and the men and women who rode them; he loved listening to their stories of how they Impressed and the adventures they'd been on with their dragons, jumping Between and travelling all over. Dragonriders always got free drinks from him. The idea of adventuring on dragonback sounded so romantic and fun to him, even after the return of Thread, but he couldn't see himself leaving the life he knew or his family. They needed him! And he needed them!

Then one summer day in 3574, when Willim was 18 Turns old, a brownrider came in from High Reaches Weyr, stating he was on Search. To Willim's surprise, the big brown zeroed in on him and told him he was good dragonrider material. Willim was thrilled -- a dragon thought he could be a dragonrider! Then reality sank in -- this meant he'd be going to the Weyr and learning how to be a dragonman, and he wouldn't see his family or his friends in Ruatha for who knew how long. Initially he didn't want to leave them, but he thought about it and consulted his parents and brothers, who were beside themselves with excitement. Ultimately he decided the discipline learned at the Weyr would be good for him, and he packed up his belongings and went with the brownrider to his new life, just in time for gold Rhianth's Flight.

Other: Brewing definitely exists on Pern -- beer is referenced repeatedly in canon, although there is no mention of where one learns the craft. I have made the arbitrary decision here that it's a home-craft, taught by families with recipes and methods handed down through generations, much like baking used to be. Let me know if this doesn't work for you!
