Personality: Given how highly Torin appears to think of himself, it's surprising that he ever ventured far enough away from his mirror to be Searched. It's easy to dismiss him as a snotty, spoiled wretch because, on some level, he is. Those who do so can hardly be faulted. He greets people with fluttering kisses pressed to cheeks and the backs of hands, and his narrow-eyed sneers are nothing short of legendary in their effectiveness. Anyone showing outward signs of disliking him is disliked in turn, though that derision can melt away for appearances' sake if he thinks they might one day do him the right kinds of favors. He is wary of people in positions of power, but that doesn't mean he's unwilling to kowtow with exuberance whenever he's being watched.
Though he has been known to voluntarily expose himself to dangerous circumstances if he thinks it might afford him some benefit or earn him praise, most of the time Torin prefers hanging back and assessing volatile situations from afar before he steps in and dirties his hands. He is well aware of what becoming a dragonrider will demand of him, but he secretly hopes that his inevitable status will also allow him to exact revenge on those who have wronged him. Until such opportunities arise, however, he is content to play at being a well-behaved example of a Holder's spare heir, eager to make friends and work hard...ish. Totally.

History: Half a day's travel by runner from Bitra Hold lies Havell, a minor hold led by a hanger-on named Thaniel. As a younger man he aspired to see the families under him grow to be as threatening as the ones he looked to, but his people have always been the addicts, not the ones who addict. They make decent money breeding herdbeasts for meat and runners for racing, but Havell will never be a place to fear. What Thaniel does have going for him is a powerful concentration of pure luck, at least in games of chance. His good fortune has kept his hold out of danger more times than he can count, and he is a frequent guest at several of Bitra's gambling houses for the misguided hope he provides the tourists.
But enough about Thaniel.
Seventeen years ago, Torin was born into his father's house with much less fanfare than he would have preferred, even as a mewling infant. His brother Alaban was already Havell Hold's golden child, an imposing lad who most closely resembled their fiercely personable, runner-wrangling mother. Torin took after the daintier Thaniel, and as he grew he became the pet of the hold, a courteous little gentleman who was just as compelling as his brother in a completely different way. Unlike some power hungry second sons, Torin was very content with his lot in life, using his time to not only soak up an education, but to learn more about runner husbandry, a smattering of tailoring, and most importantly, music. The boy took to singing like a dragon to flying, though he never wrote the songs he performed. As such, he was an insatiable collector of Harpers, and by the time he was nine, a number of Masters had recommended he go to Fort Hold to train.
He did. He might have stayed longer had it not been for the accident.
In an ironic stroke of what was perhaps the worst luck one could experience, Thaniel's beloved wife Bhaera was killed when she was thrown from one of her favorite runners. Though the boy and his mother had never been close, Bhaera was far from cruel and Torin was understandably crushed. But as upset as he was, his devastation couldn't compare to his brother's. Now of an age to get into the worst kind of trouble, Alaban began regularly spending his days and nights in Bitra's more disreputable establishments, frittering away an upsetting chunk of the savings his father had amassed over the years. It took no time at all for Alaban to fall into debt to a handful of holds, including Niue, a nearby cothold run by a tricksy gentleman called Linoch. Rather than demanding that Havell hand over what remained in its coffers to cover Alaban's grief, Linoch proposed a wedding instead. His beautiful, wine-soaked sister Vrien would marry... Thaniel. Alaban's father was still quite young, all things considered, and Linoch clearly preferred to hook his rising star to an actual Holder, not a hotheaded heir who might self destruct before he could inherit.
The marriage was awkward for everyone for a time, but following the birth of Thaniel and Vrien's son Elunn, the family's tumultuous stretch seemed to calm. Havell's next five years were positively boring, and during that time, Torin discovered the one thing he was destined to be: Elunn's big brother. He and the child were inseparable, which made it all the harder for him when his half brother was bartered away. Vrien had never been the most responsible of women, and she thought nothing of handing her five-year-old son over to an unknown fate to pay a few debts of her own. By the time Thaniel discovered what she had done, it was too late. Elunn had disappeared.
Torin did not take the news well. Four months after his sixteenth nameday, he followed some spotty rumors to a known trafficker, where he was met with denial and threats before being roughly turned toward home by her goons. They took a couple of his fingers, too. After that, Torin adopted an air of rebellion, though from an outsider's point of view it wasn't all that different from the regular teenage kind. Kohl, tight pants, eye-rolling, those sorts of things. The biggest change in him was that he could no longer stand his home, and he began practically jumping up and down and waving his arms every time a searchrider passed overhead. Bonding to a dragon had never been a dream of his growing up, but now, though his motivations might be faulty, he can think of little he wants more.
Other: Torin was Searched right before the tea hatching and was present for it, though he was still too closed off and unsettled over being uprooted to do more than stand around.
