Some part of Ezra thought he was going to forget his own birthday, but he didn't. That was a good thing, of course. Birthdays were meant to be celebrated. When it came down to it, Ezra thought a little personal celebration was in order. He'd come a long way over the past few years, heck, maybe even over the past few months. He was no longer that stupid hedonistic college kid who tried to sleep his way up and around the ladder. He thought he was finally taking a little responsibility for what was happening in his life, both civilian and powered. He was working on getting an administrative job somewhere, and he was finding new and fascinating things on his planet. Progress, right? In celebration of all these good things, Ezra decided to stop in at his favorite little cafe: Mocha Mountain. He was in the mood for some iced coffee and something sweet. As he entered, he decided to be a little goofy (or obnoxious). "Alex! Are you in there?" he called in, waiting for the lady who ran the place to show up.

It had been a fairly quiet day for the cafe, and Alex was grateful for it, in all honesty. Kai had called in because little Mori was sick, Tor had an appointment, and it was essentially just her since Ally had left earlier. She had her arms buried in dishes when she heard the bell and then Ezra's voice, and she was quick to grab a few paper towels. "I'm in back! I'll be right up!" Hands dried, she moved out to the front with a smile on her face.
"Ezra! You look quite happy today! You're in luck, I finished baking another round of brownies about ten minutes ago, so they're still warm." It was always good to see one of her regulars, and Ezra had grown on her especially.

"Oh, yes," Ezra crooned, then chuckled at his own enthusiasm. "You know what goes best with warm brownies? Ice cream. I forget, do you have any of that? Heh, probably not." His gaze went to the menus. "What if I dip it in iced coffee? On second thought, that might just be a mess. Anyway..." He knew he was being a total motormouth, and with all the caffeine and sugar he was about to take in he was only going to get more bizarrely verbose, but he wasn't in the mood to care at this point. "Today's a special day for me, Alex. Can you guess why? I'll give you three guesses."

Alex couldn't help the chuckle that escaped her. "It would be a delicious mess, at least!" She leaned against the counter, watching him contemplate. And then he mentioned it was a special day. "Oh? Hmmm...I don't think it's a graduation...and you haven't mentioned anyone new in your life...your birthday, perhaps?" Oh it had to be his birthday. And if it was, she was going to spoil him with food.

"Well, a mess that has your seal of approval can't be all that bad," Ezra said with a lopsided grin. Since when did he care about making a mess? Man, he'd really managed to smack some sense into himself. "Nope, already graduated, and nope, no one new, though it's kind of sad to say that aloud. Yep, it's my birthday! June 6th, turning 23. Man, I never thought I'd make it past college!" He said that with a smile, but he didn't think Alex knew how literal that thought was. There were multiple reasons for him to not make it to 23, not all of which he could tell her.
