Where Have You Been?

History: Born of a Courtesan Diplomat named Lucia and a bronze dragon rider named Marianius, Lucius and his twin sister never had the chance to know their parents. The birth of the twins was too hard on Lucia who died during childbirth and Marianius was so heartbroken at the loss of his love that he took the children and left them his with half-brother and his wife.

Odion and his wife Bayla were a simple farmer and Seamstress. Bayla was barren and unable to have children of her own, so the twins showing up with Marianius as the man told his brother he could not bear to keep them, as a welcoming sight to the woman. Odion was concerned at first, but talked into it by his wife and they agreed to care for the twins as if they were their own. Marianius seemed satisfied at that and left for who knows where.

The twins grew up in the south of Telgar Hold, one of the many farms in that region that helped to supply the minor surrounding holds and the main. Odion and Bayla never made it seem as if they were the twins parents, but they did tell the twins that both of their parents were dead. Odion never revealed what Marianius' profession was, instead telling them that their father had been a merchant ship captain.

The turns passed and the twins grew up. Lucius became more and more adventurous and curious, though he did like to stay a bit closer to home. He explored Telgar Hold and some of the surrounding minor holds any time he could get, when he had the chance to get away from the chores his Uncle laid out for him to do. He always felt stifled during the lessons that were given to him and his sister by their Aunt, finding himself staring outside, just wishing to be out there instead of inside.

When the twins were twelve years old, his sister decided she wanted to travel to the courtesan hall and train in the same discipline as their mother. Lucius was sad to see her go, a little angry that she was allowed to go so easily by his aunt and uncle, but he never said anything to him. Instead he kept his dreams to himself and focused on beginning his own apprenticeship to his uncle.

Things changed when Lucius was fifteen turns old. One of his best friends ended up being searched, it had happened when the two of them had been wandering around Telgar Hold. A blue dragon just came out of no where, Lucius had been shocked, surprised at what he was seeing, he had never seen a dragon before. His uncle talked about how useless it was to be a dragonrider nowadays as Thread had not returned and it probably never would. In an instant Lucius was in awe and slightly jealous as he watched his friend leave.

He returned that night to talk to his uncle and aunt about the dragons and their riders, but he was shut down quite quickly. It never stopped the dreams that were beginning to form in his head.

Years continued on and Lucius did what he could to try and convince his uncle to just allow him to go to High Reaches Weyr to visit his friend. The answer was always no.

Then, on the eve of his eighteenth nameday, he received a visitor. It was an older man, a dragonrider with a beautiful blue dragon. While the man had come to their home he was quickly turned away by Odion. Lucius was angry at his uncle and said many things he never wanted to before he left the house in anger. He wanted to go and look for the man who came but didn't know where to look when the blue found him anyways.

Having a large dragons head suddenly in front of you, sniffing you, can be quite intimidating. Lucius did his best to stay calm as the man came over to him, a smile on his face. He spoke and said he was a friend of his fathers, and then told Lucius the truth about his father that he had never heard before. If Lucius had stayed with his father at the weyr, if he and his twin had never been brought to his aunt and uncle, he would have been weyrborn and given the right to stand. As it was, he now needed to be searched if he ever had the hope or chance to become a dragonrider.

Lucius had begun to deflate at this news but perked up when the man told him that his dragon did see the potential for him. He explained that there were dangers to being a candidate and standing on the sands, there was no guarantee that you would even become one and you might end up aging out. With all of the information given, he urged Lucius to think about the choice and the he would be back in three sevendays for an answer.

Returning home, Lucius apologized to his uncle but never told him about the meeting. He kept all of his thoughts about becoming a candidate or not, to himself. The choice was made for him, however.

The day he was to meet the dragonrider was like all the others, he finished his chores and went to Telgar Hold. He was prepared to tell the man no, his aunt and uncle needed him. They were getting on in years and, they wouldn't be able to take care of the farm without him. The man was said but, he understood his choice, he was going to take Lucius back to the farm when disaster struck. Thread returned.

It was only because he was with the dragonrider that he survived. Lucius could only watch on in fear and horror as people he knew were suddenly gone. He urged the dragonrider to try and get to his aunt and uncle, but it was too late, the farm was completely destroyed. With nothing and no one left to go back to, Lucius agreed to become a candidate.

He has been at High Reaches Weyr for a turn now, has stood in at least three hatchings and nothing has come of it. The young man still hasn't lost his desire and drive to become a dragonrider. Because now there is a need for men to become riders. He does wish to hopefully hear about news on his sister soon, he wrote her as soon as he was at High Reaches but, he has not heard anything since.
