A day or two after meeting up with Rory to catch up after an extended stretch of light communication, Axton was stepping off a bus on the corner of two busy streets. The large building dominating the corner was his destination. Renegade Media, Axton had heard about it number of times, but he wasn't entirely sure what all they hand their hands in, besides knowing for certain they owned the little coffee shop a couple of blocks over that Rory worked at.

She was supposed to be meeting him here, putting in a good word with her boss. Hopefully his resume would speak for himself, but he understood that being a new graduate with no experience, he might not be the most desirable employee just yet. Which had always been a point of dread for him, all through college.

How were you supposed to get experience if no one wanted to take a chance on you?

Ax glanced down at the phone in his hand to check the time before slipping it into the back pocket of his charcoal slacks. He gave the sleeves of his light blue button down a tug to free them of wrinkles, checked the knot of his dark tie one last time, and then headed inside to see if his younger friend was there yet.

Her bus had run late and as a result, Rory was running late and when she arrived at the corporation's doors later than she would have liked. Slightly out of breath and her hair falling out of the off the shoulder braid she kept it in, she arrived within ten minutes of their intended meet time.

"Sorry!" She huffed, shifting her messenger bag so that it sat on her shoulder more comfortably. "The bus ran late, thanks for waiting!" Loose strands were blown out of her face and she beamed up at her friend before glancing at the glass doors they'd go through in a few minutes.

Her interaction with Mr. Black was minimal, but when she requested to see him, he had agreed easily enough and that gave her some hope when it came to the potential of getting him a job or at least a formal interview.

"Ready?"

She caught him with his hand on the handle of the door, and he half turned at the sound of her voice, brows arching in surprise before his delight in seeing her won over by way of a large, only slightly nervous grin. "Hey, no worries. The bus might be late, but you're not."

Holding his hand out towards her, he enveloped her into a one armed hug as she drew nearer, brushing a kiss against her temple. As he let her go he tucked a strand of flay-away hair back behind the curve of her ear. Using those few seconds to draw in a deep, steadying breath and hold it.

As he let it go he nodded, pale eyes turning back towards the doors. "Yep, let's do this." As he pulled it open he ushered her through.

He reminded himself that it wouldn't be the end of the world if he didn't find employment here. That he still had a job at the thrift store, and that his manager there had told him he could move up to full time hours for a while. This wasn't his only shot to find a job that he might be able to use his degree at.

Even with the reminder though, he was still nervous.

The forehead kiss helped settle her nerves about making him wait, Rory was a punctual girl and being late threatened to fluster her, as did the careful shifting of her hair back behind a ear. They were both soft, gentle touches that she only received from people she kept close to her and it made her feel loved, which she supposed was the point.

She let him usher her in and waited for him to pass through the door before she headed towards the receptionists at the initial desk.

"Ah, my name is Aurora Willows and I have an appointment with Mr. Black today?" She was proud that she kept her voice from wavering, a sudden burst of worry fluttering around in her stomach like butterflies.

"He's expecting you, top floor in his office," the woman at the desk instructed, sliding two visitor's passes over the counter for her and Axton. "Sign in here please," she continued, also offering a clipboard. Rory's name was scribbled down and she slid it over to Axton.

Rory's nerves weren't exactly a comforting or reassuring sign, but he did his best not to focus on them. They could have been spawned by what they where here to do, but they just as easily could have been half a dozen other things. So regardless the origin, if they lingered past this meeting with her boss, he'd address them then.

Which wasn't to say he wouldn't try to be comforting in his own right. A hand came up to linger on her back as they approached the desk, lowering only as she slid him the sign in sheet to write his name on. As he slid it back to the receptionist he gave her a charming smile, plucking up his pass from the counter so he could clip it to the front pocket of his shirt.

Stepping back, he waiting patiently for Rory to lead the way to the elevators so they could head up to the offices on the top floor. Saving a gnawing question until the silvered doors slid shut around them. "So what's he like, your boss?" What could Axton do to give himself the best chance of catching this guys interest.

Smoothing out her hair, Rory glanced over at her companion as the elevator doors shut.

"Intense." That was the best way to describe the man from her limited amount of contact. "He's a good boss, at least for Just Add Coffee." She wondered if the different types of business mean different types of managing. "He got me a birthday present." That had been the most startling when she'd gone in for her shift and found the card.

"The other baristas like him, mostly. He let's them decorate and he used to work there pretty regularly...before whatever happened." She shrugged a little helplessly because she didn't know how to describe his missing time except that he was gone for a while and then he was back and things were different but in a difficult to describe sort of way.

"I think he's handsome? Maybe charming, all the other girls swoon over him." There were a few regulars who got dreamy looks in their eyes whenever they asked about them. Rory didn't quite get it, but maybe it was because her attention was wholly focused on her boyfriend.

The doors opened and she could see the office they'd been instructed to. "This way."

Intense, fair, charismatic...

Axton nodded along as Rory talked about the man he was about to meet, and despite everything she said being more or less reassuring, it really only seemed to make him more nervous.

He stuffed his hands into his pockets to keep them still, eyes lifting up to watch the numbers climb as the elevator rose up.

This want a big deal, not really. Either he'd get a job, or he wouldn't. It wasn't as if his life style depended upon this single interview going well. It hadn't even been an option to consider until a few days ago. But that wasn't how logic or nerves worked.

As the doors opened he stared out at the office at the end of the hall, and fell into step at Rory's side after only the slightest pause.

Her steps were more confident at least, until they got to the woman at the desk before the door. She looked up, took in Rory and her companion before typing away at something. "He's been waiting," she told them without a second glance and Rory took it to mean that they were allowed to enter.

There was a split second pause, with her hand on the door handle, where she took a breath before she tugged it open and stepped inside, assuming that Axton was close on her heels.

"Hello, Mr. Black," Rory greeted with a slight smile. "Thank you for meeting with us," she added, glancing back at the taller boy behind her.

Chase's whiskey-eyed gaze lifted from the paper work he'd been reviewing and a slight smile curved the edges of his mouth upward before he gestured at the seats on the opposite side of his desk.

"Sit." Although the word was said politely, it still felt like an order in which Rory hurried to follow. His gaze leveled on Axton and his hands folded together, wrists sitting on the edge of his desk. "Ms. Willows said that you were looking for a job opportunity?"

Axton was quiet as he followed Rory down the hall towards the door of the office, quiet as they stepped inside and his young friend greeted the man sitting behind the desk. (He was younger than Axton had been expecting. A lean cut with a flash of pink in otherwise dark hair, and the sort of smile that suggested he might just know what you're thinking, and finds it all terribly amusing.)

Axton blinked as Rory looked back at him, dragging him out of his own head. "Yes, thank you for taking the time to talk with me." He smiled in return, something charming and hopefully humble.

He didn't say much at first, but it was said with the sort of command that suggested he was used to giving orders and having them followed. It was the sort of command Axton had a tendency to respond to, and he found himself moving forward to take a seat without even really realizing he'd moved. Which was fine. A good quality in a boss, he supposed.

Even if the intensity in that gaze inspired fidgeting.

The blonde refused to give into the impulse and instead set his hands on the arms of the chair. "Yes, that's right. I'm a recent graduate of DCU, and I'm looking to step into the work force, preferably into something that might relate in some way to my degree." He stopped himself from saying too much too soon. He didn't want to ramble on senselessly and ruin his chances.

Because this was supposed to be about Axton, Rory was content to sit there with her back straight and pay attention while staying out of the conversation unless she was needed. Plus, she was grateful that attention or that gaze wasn't on her even if she felt for her friend under scrutiny.

Chase let Axton talk without interruption, taking mental notes about what he was saying before he dropped his gaze back to his desk and shuffled somethings out of the way.

"Did you provide your resume already?" It was possible that his secretary had received it and failed to given it to him or perhaps Axton had brought it with him. The document wasn't terribly important, but he was going to treat this like an interview.

"We're primarily a media company, but we're looking to acquire additional firms and types of business while also extending our own research and development team. Depending on your areas of specialty, there could be a place for you." The cuff of his sleeve was adjusted and then both hands were before him on the desk once more.

"What was your degree in again?"

Axton nodded, fingers flexing where they rested on the arms of his chair. "I emailed it to the corporate address yesterday morning," he answered simply enough before falling quiet again so Chase could continue.

Somehow the description of the company and what it was looking for managed to elicit a sense of confidence--because Axton was sure he could bring something new to the table that fit within that business model--but also dread, as if he'd already been rejected. Which he hadn't, and took a moment to remind himself of that before answering the other man's question.

"I got a bachelors in recreation and leisure studies, with a minor in management studies." No matter where he went, he figured having something like that to add to his resume would help him out. Or so he'd hoped when he'd added the classes to he course schedule.

The man seemed to hum, fingers shifting through the papers in his hand until he found the one that said AXTON FINCH on it. It was pulled free of the stack, set a top, and Chase spent a handful of seconds going over what it said. Golden eyes flicked up as the younger man talked, a hand having been waved to indicate he should even if Chase wasn't directly looking at him.

At the end of it the page was dropped and hands were folded together before him on the desk.

"The resume seems a little lacking, but nothing that would prevent you from taking up a position." He was straight to the point, though Rory couldn't help but flinch from the tone. "Recreation and Leisure Studies?" He repeated, a dark brow arching.

It wasn't a field he heard much of, if at all, and he couldn't think of anyone that he knew that had a degree in such things. "What does a degree in that bring to the table? What do you think you have to offer me, Mr. Finch?"

The comment on his resume hit with a spike of fresh anxiety, but Axton pushed aside his nerves, shifting in his chair to sit up a little straighter before he answered the other man.

"Leisure Studies Management tends to go hand in hand with small or large scale events where the primary focus of the function is enjoyment and recreation." For such a broad strokes sort of degree, it wasn't the easiest to explain.

Pale eyes flicked to Rory, just for a second, before landing back on Chase. He drew in a breath and let it out before continuing, smiling in what he hoped was a show of gathered confidence. "Renegade Media is a growing company with a hand in many avenues of entertainment, and that's what this degree is all about. Events planning and organization, personnel coordination and management, making sure all bases are covered and there are back up plans in place should anything unexpected happen."

Pale hands lifted from the arms of his chair to fold on his lap instead, presenting false sense of calm.

At some point, Chase's hands had lifted and his elbows placed themselves on his desk, chin settling into the seat created by his thumbs and his lips pressing against fingers that curved over each other. He noted the way Axton's gaze flickered over to Rory and how the girl seemed to tense when she looked back before looking his way.

Their closeness was admirable, but potentially distracting. It was, however, not enough for him to dismiss the girl, who was clearly moral support to ease the tension nearly palpable in the room.

He was acutely aware of the affect he had on the people around him and he often used it to his advantage, even when it was clear the recipient was both intrigued and uncomfortable at the same time.

"Here's a proposal. You have one week to provide me an array of events and the like that you think Renegade Media could, or should, undergo and the things you think will be required and the contingency plans you seem to think may be necessary." He paused to let the project settle. "Impress me, Mr. Finch and I can assure you you'll have a lucrative career under my direction."

Papers were neatly collected, stacked, and slid into a folder that disappeared inside the desk. "Any questions?"

It was a daunting proposal, and the weight of it settled on Axton's shoulders like a lead vest, but he didn't back down or shy away from it. This was what he'd gone to school for, he'd had to do this any number of times for assignments in the past. Maybe not to this magnitude, but that didn't matter. He knew how to do this, he just had to do it repeatedly, and in short order.

It was going to be a challenge, but he was confident he could rise to meet it.

And if he didn't, if he put the work in and still didn't get the job, than at the very least he'd have gained some experience from the process.

Shoulders squaring, he nodded in understanding to the man behind the desk, before answering the question. "No questions. I'll set up a meeting with your receptionist for next week."
