Kanda left the music room, tail wagging and a bounce to her steps. Music always made the day seem brighter, and ever since she asked about staying a little later after school to take music lessons every day had seemed better and better. Most of the time when she left her lessons, the other classrooms were all dark and locked up, but today, the art room looked like there was still a light on inside it. Curious, especially since there usually weren't many around at this time, Kanda hopped right over to peek inside the open door.
Inside was another freshling, plus a couple other nightmares, but the freshling was the closest to the door. What were they doing in here? More curious now, since the red haired kid was the only freshling in the room, she made a beeline toward him. Ears perked up, with a bright grin on her face, she peeked around the other's shoulder to see what it was that they were working on.

Habushu, or Shu as his friend Jacie liked to call him, stood glaring at his painting. He knew he was getting the perspective wrong but he couldn’t seem to figure out what it was he was doing to cause the issue. He glared at it one more time before he decided to starte gathering up his things to leave for the day. When he turned to put the paintbrushes away he almost ran into another freshling. They’d apparently crept up behind him without him hearing their movement. “Oh! I almost ran right into you! I’m so sorry! Are you ok? What are you doing here so late?” His friend had talked him into sneaking behind his parents backs to create art at school after hours. So far they hadn’t suspected anything out of the ordinary. Bright colors. A blue, cloudy sky over a familiar landmark and green green grass painted on the canvas. Amazed, Kanda stood for a moment, mouth agape in awe at the painting. Someone her age had done this? Wow!!! Tails wagging vigorously, she almost missed it when he turned around. Paint filled paintbrushes inches from her nose, she jumped and skipped back a step. Immediately she signed a quick, "Sorry!"
Giving him a bright smile, she straightened and signed slowly just in case, introducing herself. "My name is Kanda. Sorry, didn't mean to sneak up on you. I like your painting!" The hybrid had to finger spell that last word, she hadn't used it much, but otherwise was proud when she knew how to say everything else. "I was getting music lessons!" she explained. Then she waited to see if he would sign back or if he would need her to pull out her notebook and flashcards.

Shu just looked at her in amazement as the freshling’s fingers moved in funny squiggles and lines. He knew what it was, but he’d never been taught sign language. He tilted his head to one side and flicked his ears in interest as he watched. It was so hypnotizing that at first he hadn’t realized she’d stopped moving and was looking at him with an expectant look on her face. He shook his head at her. “I’m sorry, I don’t know sign language. Can you write it on a piece of paper?” He gestures like he’s writing something down, because he’s not sure if he’s talking too fast for her to figure out what he’s saying. She might be able to read lips, but what if she can’t? “My name is Habushu, but my friends call me Shu, by the way.” (Wc: 141)

Judging by the look on his face, Kanda had the thought that he did not, in fact, understand. Her thoughts were confirmed by him moments later. Twisting around a bit to get the backpack off, she dug into it for the small tin of notecards, a half filled notebook, and her trusty orange glitter pen. The flashcards had been carefully written out by her adopted father, Vüsala, with useful phrases she would otherwise have to write a lot. "Hi!" "My name is Kanda." "I am mute, but can hear and understand you." were a few of the most used cards. The well worn, and fragile quality of the paper meant that the cards would have to be replaced soon, but for now they would work.
Showing the flashcards to him and waiting til he looked up at her to switch them got introductions and names out of the way. Next was putting them aside for the moment, on the floor next to her, to pull out the notebook. "I really like your painting. It was so colorful and nice. It's the statues in the garden, isn't it?" They'd caught her attention when she'd been wandering around one day after school.

Shu nodded, “Yeah, but I don’t think I’m getting the perspective on the right one correct. It feels like it’s too lopsided. I might try painting it again another time. So what are you doing here after hours? Do you live in the dorms? I’m staying after some days to paint or study, my parents okayed it.” They hadn’t really, they’d approved studying each day after school. They didn’t know about his painting at all, because they’d thought it was a waste of time the one instance that he’d brought it up. He flicked his tail around behind him, the two tips flicking against each other. He twisted a little to put the brushes he was still holding onto into a can full of water and other brushes that were having the paint soaked off of them. Quickly he was turning back to Kanda, he didn’t want to miss anything she wrote down. She was the most interesting freshling he’d met at academy, besides Jacie. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do more now, paint some more on a fresh canvas or just chat with her until it was time for his parents to pick him up. Pick-up time always brought him a sense of trepidation. (Wc: 207)

Tails wagging since she'd guessed correctly, Kanda nodded a couple times while he spoke. "You could try painting in the garden, so you can look at it while you do!" she suggested, writing as fast as she could. "I was getting music lessons in the music classroom! My papa comes to get me after they're done." Hopefully he didn't ask too many questions at once, she could only write so fast!
"How long have you been painting, you're really good!" Halfway through what she was writing, she saw him turn around with the brushes. Oh no, did he not want to talk to her because she had to write everything for him?? But by the time she'd finished her additional questions, "how come I haven't seen you around before?" and "are you gonna be here much longer today?" she saw that he'd turned back around to watch her. Giving him another bright grin she showed him her return questions. Then another one occurred to her. "Do you need any help cleaning up? I can help!" After she set aside her notebook, she reached out as if to grab something. Then, huffing a bit, she grabbed up her notebook again. "Or you could show me how you did that and we could paint together?"

Shu smiled at her, reading carefully to make sure he got it all. Sometimes his eyes would skip a word while he was reading things, because he wanted to find out what happened. But he didn’t need to do that with these. “Sometimes I paint near or in front of what I’m painting, but it’s also good to paint from memory. It helps keep the mind sharp, my teacher says. I get picked up normally so I don’t see other freshlings except in class. But now that I’ve got a permission slip from my parents, I can stay later. I’ll just text them and let them know I’m staying a bit later than normal today.” Shu turned and grabbed the canvas he’d just finished, setting it aside to finish drying. He grabbed a fresh one from the pile and marked down on the slip that he’d grabbed it before turning back to Kanda. “Here, we can paint on this fresh one. If you feel confident enough I can sign one out for you so you can paint by yourself too.” He grabbed some freshly cleaned by dry brushes and gestured for her to come closer. The first thing he did was dip a large brush in some water so it’d be damp, then made bold strokes across the canvas with a light grey blue color. (Wc: 225)

Kanda nodded. Made sense to her that painting from memory would keep your mind sharp. Whatever that meant. When Shu was done talking, she started writing in her notebook again. "I get picked up too. Papa lives near his university, so we take a portal every day." That was one of the most exciting parts of the day, right after music lessons. She liked feeling the magic move her to somewhere else so far away, it was so cool!
Mismatched eyes kept a close watch on what Shu did, absorbing it. She hadn't ever really been interested in art stuff before, but he was making it more interesting. The only down side was that she couldn't paint with her claws if she wanted to be able to talk with him. She shook her head at his offer to get her a canvas. It would be more fun to do it together! She just hoped he wouldn't mind if she wasn't as good as he was. Ears perked up, she stepped closer, getting a brush for herself. Her other hand wrote in her notebook, trying to be real fast. "Are we painting anything specific? How come you picked that color?" she paused a moment, waiting for his answers before trying to get some paint on her brush.

Shu shook his head at her then smiled, “That’s neat. My parents don’t live very far away, but they are busy with work a lot so I get picked up by a babysitter.” Shu swirled his paint brush in the water and then dipped it in some silvery paint. He flicked it at the canvas, creating a bunch of small dots on the canvas. He continued this for a few moments, covering the whole canvas. “We aren’t painting anything specific. Sometimes it’s just fun to paint whatever you feel like. I like the light blue color as the background, it’s muted which allows the colors on top to really pop out.” He put his brush back in the water. “Your turn to add something to it!” He grinned and looked at her expectantly. A babysitter? Kanda's papa had spoke with her about getting one for them. Something about it was difficult to handle her at the hospital or something. Kanda giggled a bit at that. It wasn't that she was getting into things on purpose, she just liked to explore and talk to people. Adults, when they could understand her sign, were much easier to talk to than kids her age. Especially since most of them didn't know sign language and she was forced to result in writing everything down. Not that she minded, it was just difficult if she was trying to do something. Like now. . .with painting.
Nodding when he was done explaining, Kanda looked at the colors she had to chose from. The blue was a nice color but what could she put on top of it to make it nicer. Hmmm. Idly chewing one of her claws, she stopped to dip her paintbrush in a purple. But wait, green would look nice. Stopping right before her brush would have gotten purple on it, she pulled back again. Wait, he'd dipped his brush in water first. Kanda quickly dipped her brush where he had, then she decided on red. Dipping her brush heavily into the paint, she started painting red in one of the corners.

Shu grinned as he watched her deciding on what color to use, nodding as she dabbed her brush in the water first before dunking it in red and going for the corner. He stood there thinking for a good many minutes as he watched. She’d tried that finger flicking thing when he first met her and was now curious as to what it had been. Might as well ask, or he might never find out. “Hey, what was that thing you did with your fingers when you first saw me? Where you were flicking them around a bunch?” He then tried to move his fingers like she had, though he didn’t spell anything out and his fingers didn’t form any letters very well. He looked at her with a bit of flushed cheeks. He knew his attempt was atrocious, but he wanted to be clear with her on what he’d been talking about. (Wc: 153)

Kanda focused, trying to make sure all the paint was even on the corner. Then she spread out from it in broad strokes. What had he done when he was done painting that color? Frowning a bit in concentration, she thought. He'd dipped it in water again, right? Watching him, she reached over to dip hers in the water again, just getting it wet. Now she went to dip her brush into the orange. She'd gotten a good sized blob on her brush when he asked her about her signing.
His pantomiming of what she'd done made her giggle, shoulders shaking with mirth without any noise. Slowly, she signed back, NSL to him. Then, still holding the brush, though some of the paint had dripped onto the floor while she wasn't paying attention, she reached for her notebook again. "It's called sign language. If you can't talk or can't hear, you learn that so that people can understand without having to write down everything. It's easier most of the time." She wrote, showing it to him. "My papa had to learn before he could talk to me too." Kanda's tails wagged a bit, ears perking up. "Did you want to learn it too?"

Shu perked his ears up at this response, nodding enthusiastically enough that his hair flopped into his eyes. That’d be something fun to try. And that way he could talk to Kanda more easily. He grinned as he responded, “Absolutely, if you’re willing to teach me or to let me know where I can go to learn it.” NSL, huh? He wondered if he could incorporate it 8nto his art in some way. He swept his bangs out of his face just in time to see a few drips of orange fall to the floor. It was alright though since he already had a drop cloth down for just such issues. He grabbed up his paint brush again and repeated the dampening before dipping it in purple and spattering the bottom left corner with the color, slowly moving up and out till it covered the bottom of the canvas at a nice angle. He then switched to a pink color, dusting a spattering overtop what Kanda had painted already. It was coming together nicely as far as abstract painting went. He just needed to give it a finishing touch. He looked closely at what he had on his palette board. Ahhh this bright bright blue would be perfect. He grabbed a flat and smooth calligraphy brush and set to work. The finished product would be amazing. A nice large K, for Kanda. He put his name up in the top right corner and made a smiley face in the top left to represent Kanda. (Wc: 254)
