Opal paced outside the nurses room that Logan had been set up in. She had been here since they had moved Logan. She had struggled with him when he demanded to help. Dealt with him when he tried to leave, insisting he was fine. She has even helped hold him down when the nurses decided sedation was easier. Thank goodness Logan lost his powers when upset otherwise there would have been more injuries than just his.

And this was only over the course of the last day. The nurses had explained that the pain meds were probably the cause of his stubborn attitude but Opal knew it was something completely different.

It was guilt.

Logan grimaced in his sleep as the dragon in his dreams roared and swiped at him. It was always the same dream. Always the same serpent. Always ending the same.

The little tadpoles gone.

His squad and himself injured.

No matter how he fought, no matter how he struggled, it always eded the same.

When he threw himself upright, his hazy eyes focused for a second before he let out a whimper and went back down, cradling his arm. Or rather the stump that was left.

All his fault.

It was all his fault.

.....His fault....

Later that night, after a nurse had demanded that Opal eat and rest, to which she had reluctantly agreed, she returned. She had fussed over his unconscious body a bit, making double sure that his arm was well padded, that his stitches had been covered appropriately. That the flowers by his bed had been changed and we're fresh.

She hated seeing him like this. All broken. The Logan she knew was strong. And this one was so frail. His body defeated by an enemy tht Logan couldn't beat. She smiled and moved a lock of his mohawk out of his face with a gentle swipe of her fingers. That must be odd for him.

She gasped when he suddenly reached out for her hand, his eyes suddenly open and staring at her in anger. The growl that Rose from him was equally alarming tho not as alarming as the bones scraping each other as he squeezed his grip.
"Logan, it's me. It's me." She whispered, trying to keep a calm edge to her voice.

"Logan..."

Her voice rose a little, her panic growing until she saw the light in Logan's eyes return. Slowly the grip on arm loosened until his hand slipped back to his side. Only then did she notice that he had raised both arms. Her heart sank a little at the expression that Logan gave her.

Logan took a second to reassure himself of his surroundings. The sedative made it hard for his brain to focus, and sometimes he couldn't tell if he was in his dreams or the outside world. Whatever they had given him was strong. Strong enough that all his injuries were minor aches.

Deep breaths. In. Out. In. Out. Until the world around him lost it's hazy edge. Only then did he turn his wounded gaze on Opal. But seeing her reactions to him cause him pain. Pain he didn't want to feel. So he shut all his feelings down. His face became a smooth mask as he locked all that fear and anger up in a tiny box inside his chest. All his misery. All his anguish and guilt.

He blinked and it was as if a light switch had gone off and he was his normal self again, if only a little flat. He sank back down into the pillows, ignoring the look of sadness on his sister's face.

"You should be home." His voice gravelly and deeper than normal. "You can't do anything more for me, Opal. Just let me rest in peace." He glanced past Opal and toward the wall.

Opal bristeled visibly at those words.

"Rest in peace? What is this? Your dang funeral?! Are you already in a coffin?!"

"That's not what I said Opal. I just meant-"

"Oh no. It's fine. I understand. You want me to let you wallow in your own misery!"

"Now, now Opal. That's not i-"

"Oh poor you. What happened was a tragedy. You're lucky you made it out alive! The others were injured just as bad as you."

"Opal?"

"And you? You are alive, despite all your moaning and groaning. Alive and kicking and if you're not thankful for that, I am! "

"OPAL!!!"

"WHAT?"

They stared at each other for a second, noses touching. Opal in outrage and Logan in indignation.

"I. AM. FINE."

Opal started at the menacing words as they fell into the space between. She couldn't hold it back anymore. All the fear and anguish she had felt. Thanks castles palpable fear and anguish. She finally gave in. She threw her arms around Logan and began to sob.

"There, there Opal. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled." Logan mumbled grumpily. "Don't cry. You know I can't stand a lady crying. And besides, I only have one arm to pay you with. You wouldn't want a peg legged hug, would you?"

"Oh you stupid, stupid man." She half sighed/hlf sobbed. burying her face closer to his neck. "It's my fault. I was just so worried and then all the chaos with the princesses, and it just....."

He sighed and reached his good arm up to pat her back. "I know Opal. I know. It's just....the guilt get to me. " He whispered. A few years trailed down his cheek unnoticed. "......I should have done something more...."

Opal pulled back and shook Logan for a second. "LOGAN WRESS! How dare you it there and tell me you should have done more!! Look at the shape your in! Much more and you would be dead!!!" She shouted.

"MAYBE I SHOULD BE!!"

Opal blinked before dropping her hands. He watched her feelings shutter and her face grow hard. "Then I'll be back when you realize how damn lucky you are, you stubborn immovable grouch. " She snarled, before storming off, almost knocking down a nurse on her way out.

Logan took the silence in for a few seconds before rolling as gingerly as he could into the closest ball shape he could muster. Once he figured he was alone, he let the tears fall.

"I should have died."
