Alya did not understand the young Senshi; he didn’t get how they could sneak out of their houses, hide from their parents, and run out to live a super powered life without anyone knowing. Not with school, either—didn’t they fall asleep in class? Didn’t someone notice the bruises from all their fighting? Because, kids or not, he knew they got into fights. The Negaverse was ruthless; they didn’t care who they hurt, and so far as he knew, the younger Senshi were just more inexperienced—just easier prey.

It made him want to protect them.

Alya’s experience with fighting prior to being a Senshi was a lot of hair pulling, scratching, and biting. It wasn’t anything glamorous, and when he did resort to actual punches or hits he was usually too emotional to remember what he’d been doing.

He couldn’t imagine being that young and having these responsibilities. But then, kids these days were growing up quicker. When he was fourteen, most of his thoughts had been on how he could make himself more likable, more presentable, more wantable just to secure himself a permanent home.

He still hadn’t figured it out.

But he was figuring this Senshi thing out, just a little bit. He knew that he couldn’t keep the younger ones safe and inside—they were more stubborn than he was—and just as determined to prove themselves. The least he could do was make sure they were okay and knew that they didn’t have to go out alone. So, when he’d saw Echo on the app, he’d reached out to her to ask if she wanted to meet up to patrol some time.

He might not have been the best Senshi, but he was taking small steps to be better.

There was always some concern about a guy his age hanging out with someone much younger, but he had to justify that he did volunteer work with kids about her age regularly enough—and Carlee had been young and he still spent time with her.

But her profile said she studied geneology, and that she’d been to her homeworld.

Two things he found himself thinking about lately.

He reached out to her and asked if she wanted to do a patrol, or at least chat while they meandered around the town. He let her pick the time and place; he didn’t know what she was capable of or comfortable with. In the end, they’d settled on a location he was familiar with. He arrived early and settled himself on a toppled tree. In this form, his hair always seemed impeccable, and yet he couldn’t help but fiddle with it.

It was a clear night and there was a good view of the sky; alone, it was easy to let his mind wander and, while something he didn’t typically enjoy, he found himself momentarily relaxed and able to appreciate the pretty twinkling of the stars.

Connie sighed nervously as she set out for the night, giving the apartment a last once over to make sure she had turned everything off. Her parents once again not home, she locked the door, closing it tightly behind her before heading outside. Finding the first alleyway she could, transforming into Sailor Echo.

She bounced on her heels, feeling the power. It made her feel better but it had also been a good ten days since the last time she had transformed. Last time she had ran into Corrupt Sailor Noctua, still sporting some of the yellowing bruises. Thankfully she had had her hair trimmed up and fixed after the other Senshi had ruined it.

Years of so much hard work. Echo found herself fiddling with the fluff that now framed her face instead of falling down to her ankles in a huge mess. "Agh!" Frustration. She punched the brick wall she faced. It hurt, broke some skin, but not enough to do any real damage to her. Echo huffed, sending a blast of air through her nose before heading off again.

Only getting more nervous when she was able to feel the fellow Senshi's energy in range. No turning back now, I guess. Approaching slowly, she couldn't help but smile a bit seeing the Senshi fiddling with his own hair. She scratched the back of her head, realizing her picture she used on the app had her long hair in it, suddenly feeling doomed that he would surely bring it up.

Echo tried her best to shake it off and gave a wave as she announced herself. "Hey there!"

Alya had been somewhat dazed while he played with his hair; truthfully, he should have been paying more attention to the approaching energy signature and it wasn’t until she raised her voice that his eyes drifted to her and he even realize that she had arrived.

He blinked, processed, and then offered a quick smile as he rose to his feet to greet her. “Hey,” he replied, hastily smoothing out his already impeccably well maintained, magical outfit. He mimicked her wave and then extended his hand in greeting.

“Alya,” he introduced, despite the fact that he suspected she already knew his name from the profile he’d set up.

If he noticed her change in hairstyle, he didn’t bring it up. Instead, he just maintained his smile. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m so sorry I didn’t hear you coming, I was distracted.”

…Probably not something he should have introduced himself with; he suspected it made him seem a bit unreliable and fairly incompetent. But, he tended to talk faster than he thought, and it was too late to take back any words.

He tried to hide the confession with more conversation and continued, “I appreciate you coming out. I hope it wasn’t much trouble to sneak out? Oh—no, that sounds creepy.” He sighed, exasperated, and pressed his free hand to his face for a second, as if it would help him clear his mind. “…I always worry about chibi Senshi,” he finally said, bluntly. “I mean, if I was your age, and a Senshi? I’d be sneaking out, doing all this, too. It’s just, I have nothing better to do than worry, these days. It’s not like I don’t know that chibi Senshi can fight very well, it’s just—when I was your age, I would have killed to have someone fuss over my well-being. I suppose I’m projecting. Oh. And rambling. I’m a mess, I’m sorry.”

He finally pressed his lips together tightly, as if to actually force himself to stop talking before he could dig a hole any deeper than what he’d already made for himself.

Echo watched as Alya's daze broke and he stood to meet her, his bright red fuku reminding her of Cadmus', which brought a slight sense of comfort until she noticed his long blond braid swing up behind him. It made her heart ache for her own hair that she had lost just ten days earlier. "Alya," She echoed out of habit, extending her hand to met his but couldn't make herself return the smile now. "I'm Echo."

She was locked in her thoughts as he conitnued, wondering if this was a good idea after all. Though she was releaved to hear that even older Senshi got distracted from time to time. She didn't want to feel like this or give off the thought to others that she was a bad Senshi just because she had lost some stupid hair. It would go back right? Maybe she'd braid hers as well..

Pulling herself back to the conversation as he was talking about if he was her age, she couldn't help but smirk a bit. He was right though, she'd love if her parents happened to fuss over her but of course they would have to actually be home for that, wouldn't they?

Echo laughed a bit as he finally stopped, though maybe that wasn't the best idea. "I-It's ok, really.. I..uh, my parents aren't really around a lot anyway, so it's pretty easy to get out." Another, now nervous laugh slipped out as the feeling welled up and her eyes starting to sting. Sure he could see the look developing on her face, she gave up she quickly hugged the older Senshi before he could make it worse, hiding her face in his fuku and trying her best not to cry.

Though she wasn't really sure why..and surely he'd think she was crazy now.

Alya froze, mind immediately wracking to figure what on Earth he could have done wrong; he wasn't the best to give comfort, and he knew that he often spoke too quickly or bluntly, but he'd been trying very hard to pay more attention to what he said. Especially around children and young teenagers.

"Hey," he said slowly, struggling to wrap his mind around something to say. Instead, he wrapped his arms around her gently. "I'm sorry."

He didn't know what he was apologizing for, but certainly he was responsible in at least some way. "I didn't mean to upset you, but it's going to be okay. Do you--Is there something I can do? I didn't mean to upset you."

Echo felt a bit relief when she older Senshi finally hugged her instead of just running for the hills like she thought he probably should have. Though she felt bad that he felt it was his fault that she was upset. It defiantly wasn't. Just all of the problems that came with being a Senshi, it didn't help that her family would never understand.
Maybe that's why she had sought Alya out after joining the app. Maybe she could just make a new family.

She shook her head and pulled back a bit to try to wipe away the tears, to compose herself in front of the older boy. How childish she must have seemed.

"N-No, no.. I'm sorry, it's my fault," She finally started. "I've been having a rough time powered lately.." A sigh. "My hair used to be as long as yours!" She tired to sound cheerly, it did help a tad. "It was a long, fluffy mane and uh...a corrupt didn't like it too much...she decided to take it from me-" She stopped, trying to keep herself from crying again.
It was all just silly.
She knew she was still just a child but she didn't want to feel this way. She was Echo now.
Not that her powers made her feel much better about things lately.

"She cut your hair?" Alya asked, alarmed and horrified for her. "Echo," he said, in a voice that seeped with sympathy. He reached out for her again; he didn't care about the tears and just drew her close again.

"It's okay to cry," he said softly. He tangled his fingers in her shorter hair and just played with it in the way that he knew he liked. In the way he'd always wished someone would for him, when he was young and hurting.

"It's not your fault. And you shouldn't blame yourself for being overwhelmed. Life is hard. Harder for you, I bet. I had a hard time when I was young, but I didn't have to deal with being a Senshi. I know you've got a lot on your plate. And I bet it's hard to keep it quiet. It's not healthy, though. I used to bury all of my problems, and it would eat me up. I made myself sick. I had an ulcer by the time I was twelve."

There were a lot of factors related to his own neglect, but he didn't dip into them. "You can be upset about things. I'm proud that you know you're having a rough time. If you were like me, you wouldn't know when to ask for help. So you're doing okay, Echo. Come on, let's sit down. We can talk more, okay? You can cry if you need to. I'll hold you, if that helps. And I can play with your hair. If you like that. I like that, it's my favorite."

I want to continue it! <33 I'm just sorry it took me so long to get back to you ;;

Echo couldn't help but tense up a bit at his alarm, almost as if looking for a way to deflect it. Still feeling it was her fault after all. Though the feeling was quickly washed away when he pulled her into another hug. His breathe drawing for the words that came next, feeling the small vibrations as he talked. She focused on this, on him.

It took everything she had to not just collapse there at his feet in a puddle of tears and, god forbid, snot. As his words hit her to the core.

She hugged him back, burring her face in his fuku again, as she tried fighting off the tears as best she could with her small body trembling under his arms. She was even shocked at his comment towards his own health as a child. Wondering what he could've possibly had going on then to cause such things without being a Senshi. Though she knew it would be rude to ask and it's not like her life was much better just those two years ago.

It wasn't until he mentioned that he was proud of her that she finally lost it a bit and started crying again, though at least it wasn't the gross sobbing..yet.
Giving a hard nod when he suggested them sitting to talk it out and gather themselves a bit, though she felt too embarrassed in herself again to peel herself from his chest. Surely, she thought, if someone had happened upon them then they would see this sad little scene and head the other way. Maybe a second-hand embarrassment.

Either way she was sure that just having this late Spring night to themselves to sort things out would do a load of good. Hopefully bringing her some ease, knowing that Summer would be there soon and she would have a lot more time on her hands. Shying away from her role as Echo would not be helping her through such a already lonely time.

Alya didn't try to move her away from him; he held her to his chest and kept his arms around her, as if to shield the world from her tears so she could have a private moment. He didn't seem embarrassed; tears were something he understood. He wasn't proud of it, but in his line of business you had to put on a front, you couldn't let people see that you had a weakness.

What was that teaching anyone? That it was wrong to ask for help? That you were supposed to push yourself so hard and pretend like you weren't hurting?

Echo was a child, and one who was hurting, and she deserved to cry and know that she was allowed to cry. That there were things in this world that were frustrating, and unfair, and she had every right to process her emotions in whatever way she seemed fit.

As long as she was taking care of herself, as long as what she was doing was what was best for her.

He kept her close and ran his fingers through his hair, in the way he remembered someone doing when he was young, and alone, and scared. In the way he wished someone would do when he felt alone, and scared, today.

He wasn't shy when he asked, "Are you taking care of yourself? Are you spending time with your friends? --It's very important to remember that you must take a break if your heart is hurting. It's like any injury, you know. Only, you can't see it. But it can hurt just as badly. There are lots of medicines to take care of it. What do you do for fun, Echo?"

Echo had a good hard cry, letting Alya hold her even it was a bit awkward. It was nice to have someone looking out for her though, a change of pace from being an only child who's parents were always busy with work.
His hand soothing as he ran it through her hair, leading her into a more silent sob as the tears seemed to leak endlessly from her eyes. Hard blinks trying to wash them away and keep her eyes from burning too terribly much. She was sure they would be sore either way, along with seemingly draining her of all of her energy when she finally got to make her way into bed that night.
When he finally spoke again, it got her heart racing, only sure it was him as the string of questions continued and caused his body to vibrate from his voice box being used. She drew in a breath trying to focus on his words.
Echo wanted to nod, she wanted to say yes, but she gave a bit of a shrug instead. She thought over the events of that month alone; Meeting and letting Paracelsian drain her energy so he wouldn't get in trouble for talking to her. She knew she couldn't tell him that. Before that she had met Eion who was stringing her along on the whereabouts of her friend Elex.
"Been trying to find a balance between being a Senshi and good.." She finally admitted, "It's not really working I guess..it doesn't help that I pretty much have to take care of myself."
She sighed a bit, not really caring as she pressed her face into his chest move, hoping his fuku still had room for a few more tears. "I like to skateboard..it helps clear my head. I'm really good at genealogy stuff, I've even been able to make a little business out of it, but it's a bit on the back burner since I've been learning all of this." She wanted to pout now, frustrated in herself. "It's been a year already but everything is still so...unknown."

"Genealogy?" he asked, still stroking her hair as he held her. "That's fascinating. I always wanted to look into that. I don't know much of anything about where I came from. When you get your business up and running again, will you let me come see you about it?"

He wasn't just making conversation; he might not have thought about it on his own, but she had brought it up. It was an excuse to see her again, to check up on her. To make sure she was doing okay.

"...But don't you worry about that too much. I haven't been able to find a good balance of anything, either. But maybe I have some experience that could help you. Maybe there's something I could do. Maybe we could work together. You shouldn't have to take care of yourself."

There was a bit of pain, of sadness at the thought, and he knew he was extending himself; he just hoped he wasn't being too bold about it. "I'll help. If I can. For anything. I know what it's like to be alone. And no one should have to be. Especially not at this age, not with all of this going on."

Echo couldn't help but get flustered, feeling her face got hot. She still hadn't made a friend with a Senshi as a civilian yet. Well that she knew of. And of course Genealogy required a name after all. It then crossed her mind that maybe people missing from history could have the chance of being powered. Well, of course she had realized that after she had became powered, that maybe whoever she was looking for was actually hiding from her this way.

She pulled herself back when Alya was offering his help. She wasn't sure how far it could actually go or how long it would last. There was always that promise. That thought. But even with this life, or maybe that's what made it worse, it was so hard to find time. A smirk. A child thinking all of this but she had been on her own for a while now because of her parents work. She had to keep herself alive through this, if anything so her parents didn't come to regret their lives.

Echo gave a nod and another big hug. "I would really like that, all of that." She laughed lightly, taking a step back to raise her pinky up. "Let's promise? I know I'm young but I want to be there for you too. I'll train super hard and get better!"

Alya couldn't help but smile as he accepted the hug, more prepared this time. He returned it easily. "Pinky promise," he said when she stood back; he hooked his pinky with hers tightly and gave a firm shake.

"Age is only a number, Echo. And if we're senshi, we know our souls have been around the block a few times before. So you train, and I'll train, and we'll be here for each other. Because you can't ever have too many friends. Especially ones who care about you."

He smiled at her, reassuring and hopeful. "We can train together. We'll spar some time! We'll get stronger, together. And if you ever need anyone, I promise." He was still smiling softly, but it was clear that he meant it. "I'll be here. I'll make sure you have my phone number, so you text me for anything, any time, even if it's not powered up stuff."

Echo listed to Alya's words like they were weighted in gold, though she supposed they were in a way. Despite the weight and pain they carried, leading her to think of the empty ruins on her home world. Her hand wandering into her hair as she wondered if she had lost some sort of secret Echo traditional that had latched onto her soul before she had ever even been born to her parents on Earth.

She was happy though when her spending thoughts couldn't carry on and had to focus on his other words. Together. That made her happy. She had always wanted real friends and despite this city's troubles, it seemed to give her what she craved most.

Backing away to retrieve her phone from it's hidden pocket of space. Smiling again when she glanced at the app that had brought them together. Being sure to make mental notes to change her profile picture in the following days, after her face had finally recovered from all her crying.

Alya smiled fondly, seeming relieved that her mood had improved. For whatever sorry mess he'd been feeling, he felt better now. He wasn't perfect, he knew that; he'd accept help wherever it came from. Friends, too--especially the ones who seemed genuine and good for him.

"We should meet up again soon, Echo. We'll be better friends and better Senshi. And we'll probably have to get ice cream at some point, because--let's be real--we probably deserve it." If the world wasn't going to be kind to them, he'd have to make sure they were pampered. And, calories definitely didn't count if you were powered up.

"I think we did good tonight," he decided; emotionally draining conversations were hard to have. Good to have, but hard. "...So we should go home and be nice to ourselves. A bubble bath, maybe. That sounds good," he mused. "...But, message me any time. If you need to talk, or if you need anything."

He had drawn out his phone and was searching through his messages, finding her name and shooting her a new one. "It's my phone number, in case you need to reach me when we're not powered up. And I mean it, any time, for any reason. Friends have to look out for each other."
