Nothing strange or unusual had happened since Halloween, and while most of that delighted Cadence, it also really…kind of upset her because that meant that she had also had no contact with her beautiful super hero savior either and…well.
…she had been really pretty.
But. That was last year. Almost a full year ago…or at least…at least more than half a year ago, so…it didn’t count anymore. Things were normal and that was what mattered now. No more crazy beautiful super heroes…just normal…mundane life.
That was that.
Yolo and moving on.
She was on her way home from game night, deciding to walk tonight instead of driving…it was so nice out. Somewhat cool and breezy and it just…the idea of being stuck in a car instead of being nice and free…just felt repugnant.
Cadence’s eyes lit upon the cat in the cape a few moments before she really realized just what she was seeing. When her mind caught up, she paused and covered her mouth with both hands, trying to stop the amused and excited squeal that was threatening to escape.
Sure, normally she didn’t really abide by people dressing their pets…but holy cow this little cat looked so utterly majestic, like a little prince of fluff. As quietly as possible, the purple haired girl slid the phone from her pocked and crept closer, wanting to get a picture of this masterpiece to share on her Facebook. Cute cat pictures always got a lot of likes…and maybe…she could just…
Well. If someone just left this poor thing outside all dressed up…clearly they just wanted to give him a home, right?
…If nobody turned up, she would try to get this beast prince to come home with her, and then everyone would want to hang out to meet this wonderful creature.
…and if not…at least she had pictures!

Sometimes it was just nice to go out and take a walk. Normally, Broderick was just fine lazing around at home, or following his senshi around and getting into trouble with her, or visiting Miss Kitty and sharing the best snacks with her - but every so often, he wanted to go out on his own for no real reason and just... walk around for a bit. He came to the edge of a street he wanted to cross and paused there, ears twitching as he watched for oncoming traffic - and that's when he noticed it. Oh. Oh. Well, his walk was just going to have to wait, because if he wasn't mistaken (and he wasn't, because he was smart and nearly always right!), then there was a senshi here that needed a present from yours truly. Head up and whiskers twitching, he turned away from the road and looked for the source of that feeling. And - and there, with her phone out and looking right at him, is the starseed he's searching for. "Hello! Do you want a special present?"

A talking cat.
Perhaps she had let her guard down too soon and now she was being punished for it…but she hadn’t realized that…there were such things. She shouldn’t have been surprised though. If there were beautiful women cosplying Sylveon running around, why wouldn’t there be talking cats? Perhaps she should have realized when the caped animal started walking towards her that not all was as it seemed and there might be something…magical in the air.
Quietly, Cadence squatted down, resting on the backs of her ankles and looking at the cat somewhat warily and somewhat curiously. “…What kind of present are we talking? Because if it’s money, of course I’ll take it…but if it’s something strange or one of those pyramid schemes, you can forget it, cat. I’m not falling for a pyramid scheme.”
Slowly, the purple haired girl held her hand out towards the cat, allowing him to sniff her if he liked…because she wanted to pet him. Talking cat or not…he was really, really cute.

"Of course not, I don't think I could move a pyramid even if I tried," Broderick said, blinking in confusion as he trotted over and politely sniffed the not-yet-awakened senshi's hand. Did she want to pet him? He hoped so - there was nothing quite as nice as a good scratch around the ears in his expert opinion. Did humans like ear scratches? He wasn't sure, but if not, they were absolutely missing out, and that was a terrible, terrible thought. "It is kind of strange, though, I guess. Depending on what you mean by strange - so maybe it would be better if I asked a different way!" Was he doing this right? He was hardly an expert on awakenings, after all, and this one was already proving to be a little different from how he thought they were supposed to go. Or was it? Well, as long as it worked, the fluffy mauvian supposed it didn't really matter if it followed some kind of unwritten rules about How Things Should Go. "So, let me ask you this instead," he said, pawing at the potential senshi with a fluffy foot. "Do you want to be magic~? Because my present will let you do that, if you want it!"

Cadence felt her lips twitch into a smile when the cat came closer, and soon her hands were on him, fingers fluffing up his fur where they could reach it, her nails softly scratching behind the sweet little ears. “I mean…I suppose there are worse presents that a person could get…right?”
She felt her pulse quickening when she thought of the girl who had saved her back in October…was…would this be that same kind of power?
“I mean. Talking cats in general are strange. What’s your name, kitty? Besides, it’s just strange to have a cat come up and ask if you want a present…honestly, if I didn’t know there were strange things in the city already, I would think I was going crazy…but…come on then. Let’s see this gift of yours! Give me some magic. I’m ready. I was born ready.”
She winked and watched the cat with a look of expectation on her face.
Now perhaps…she would get to save people too.

"Maybe we're strange to you, but it's perfectly normal to me to talk," Broderick said, leaning into the pets and arching his back. Oh, that felt nice, that spot was really relaxing, and - and ...no, he had a job to so and he was going to do it! So, after a valiant effort at regaining his dignity (that required uncrossing his eyes and stepping back with a not-quite-stumble), he tipped his head back and bounced a little in place. "Okay! Are you ready? Keep your eyes on me~" He chirped. Alright, he'd done this before, it wasn't hard. "You're watching, right? You're watching? One, two, three!" Just enough flips to make him dizzy and wobbling once he landed, and one henshin pen poofed into being. "Here you go," he chirped, picking it up in his mouth and stretching up on his hind legs, wobbling a little from the awkward balance. "Miff iff foh you!" He'd done a good job, or at least he thought so - she hadn't run away screaming, or said no, and he'd gotten to give the best kind of present anyone could give: the chance to be super cool and special, just like his favorite people!

Cadence kept her eyes on him just as he instructed, watching him flip in the air and watching as a…as a pen came into being from nothing.
The girl drew in a sharp breath, taking it from the small creature and then leaned down, kissing his little kitty nose. “Thank you very much…” She looked at the pen eagerly, turning it over in her hand. “But…what do I do with it…like I have the concept of being a super hero pretty rock solid in my mind but…how does this help? What does it do, exactly?”
Because…for as excited as she felt, she wasn’t expecting a pen…at all.
In fact…it was a little bit of a letdown.

"It's magic!" Broderick chirped, crossing his eyes as his nose was kissed. "Duh. Did you think I'd just give you a regular pen that you doodle silly pictures with, or something?" Really, he didn't know why the magic took the shape of a pen; it just did! Maybe it was something he should know, or at least be concerned about, but the Mauvian never claimed to be particularly devoted to his role. ... Or even very good at it. That took more work than he really wanted to bother with. "You just have to hold it up and say the right thing and 'boom', instant superhero," he said, rubbing around her legs and purring. Sure, he could... probably explain it better than that, and more at length, but this was good enough, right? Why go to the extra and unnecessary effort unless he had to?

Quietly, Cadence watched him, bright eyes narrowing slightly. She looked at the pen in her hand once more and swallowed, hope again welling up in her chest. “So…can you tell me what words I have to say, because I want to be an instant superhero, more than you can possibly know, cat.”
Quietly she crouched down and petted the creature who was winding around her legs. “So…why don’t you tell me what I have to say so I can go around and save the city from everything okay? I was saved by one before, by a super hero…she was…”
Cadence’s eyes sparkled for a minute. “She was so cute. I hope that I’m cute.”
Quietly she scratched Broderick’s ears and waited, eager, hand holding the pen tightly and with a little more reverence.

"Hmmmm, okay," Broderick said, blinking big green eyes up at his new maybe-kind-of-friend (or at least really good pets-giver, which was pretty much the same thing in his eyes). He twitches his tail enticingly, then flopped over on one side and purred, loudly. "There's a lot of things around to help save people from, so... whatever your reasons for wanting to are good enough for me!" Even if those reasons were probably silly to some, they seemed perfectly reasonable to him. Then again, he wasn't really able to comment - not with what his bonded senshi was like! "Okay. You're ready, aren't you?" He was dragging it out a little and he knew he was, but there was something kind of amusing about watching the girl wait. He didn't want to drag it out so long that it turned into being mean though, so he hopped back for his feet. "Repeat after me - Tristan asteroid power, make up! - and that will do it! Presto, one magic superhero!"

Cadence’s eyes lit up and she nodded eagerly and almost whined when he asked again, opening her mouth to state yet again that yes she was ready, she wanted this…perhaps more than anything else in the world.
And then he told her what to do, and the girl didn’t hesitate.
“Tristan Asteroid Power, Make up!” She held the pen tightly, excitement flowing through her as she felt different and then the different turned to strong and then stood a senshi in the place of where the normal girl had just been.
And Sailor Tristan squealed and scooped up the cat that had bestowed this upon her, hugging him tightly. “I’m just like she was! I’m a hero too! Oh! You are amazing!”
She looked down at her outfit and was pleased by the soft purples and the ruffles and the bows. The skirt was quite a bit shorter than she was comfortable with but…but she would deal with it. She was a hero now…she had to deal with it.
“How can I repay you for this? Do you want to come home and let me feed you because…I will feed the heck out of you, and pet you and brush you and wash your cute little cape! And oh!” Tristan squeezed him gently. “And you can tell me everything!”

'Aww,' Broderick thought to himself, looking the new senshi over with a bright kitty-smile. 'What a cute senshi this one is!' And she was, too - Sailor Tristan had an innocent look to her, sweet and ruffly , and she looked so happy to be magic, too! Yes, yes, he had definitely done a good thing awakening this one. "Food is the best way to repay me," he chirped, beaming up at her and twitching his tail as cutely as he could manage. "But no washing anything! I'm fine there, thank you - and I can't stay forever, but I don't mind visiting for a little while!" Had he just made a new friend? Oh, he hoped so. His bonded, his Myammy, would always be his number one, but he liked other senshi, liked the how nice they could be and the attention it got him and seeing the excitement one their faces when they got to do something cool. And now here was one inviting him home for dinner! (He wasn't, Broderick could admit to himself, the best Mauvian for explaining anything, but... eh. Free food was free food! He'd give it a shot, with that kind of offer.)

She scooped up the cat into her arms and squeezed him gently, nodding. “Well, then food it is. All the food that you want. Heck, I can go to the fish market and get you something super fancy if that’s what you’re into…I just…I’m so excited. And really happy.”
Tristan began walking towards her home, snuggling the cat. This was the start of a lot of new adventures…and so long as she was told the right ways to do things…she could really be a hero to and that was…
…Kind of really an amazing thought.
Quietly she began grinning as she thought about everything that would happen from now on…and began making plans. Because one day. She would find that cute girl again…and heck. Maybe one day she would even be stronger than her.
The thought made her laugh out loud, utterly content.
