It was a Thursday, bright and shiny and beautiful, and Pythia Adler found herself stalking someone. Frankly, being a stalker was an unusual and more-than-mildly-uncomfortable position for the redhead to find herself in, but for the life of her, she hadn't thought of a logical reason to explain just why she was hunting down someone from the Astrophysics department without revealing her gluttony. The cause of her cellulite. The reason she had to buy a size 12 jean last week when she went shopping.

The person she was stalking knew her way around a baked good.

Not to get her wrong- the discovery had been a complete accident. She didn't just have a sixth sense for these things, after all. Convenient as that might have been, her supergirl page powers didn't send her Carb senses a-tingling. No, the discovery had been mundane. One of her classmates- she hadn't deigned to remember which- had been in a tutoring session, and the desserts had been right there, and well- Pythia didn't mind if she did, thank you much. In retrospect, she was sure that someone had a religious epiphany with less drama than Pythia had tasted this slice of bundt cake.

It had taken her classmate more time to get out of her chair than it had taken Pythia to grab more of the cake and flee the library. And by more of, Pythia meant the rest of the cake. They'd offered her some. And they had been horrifically non-specific about how much was some. There was probably a crumb or two left forgotten on the table.

The classmate had simply glared at her when Pythia dropped the empty pan on her desk, demanding to know who cooked it. So she'd had to find out herself. Her target, it seemed, was Seren Yong, a senior in the Astrophysics department. What a waste of talent- Astrophysics indeed. Still, she'd acquired the other girl's schedule with bargaining, harassment, and maybe a small slice of pure evil.

And now, she bounced into the room in her white pantsuit and high heels, making her way to where the other woman was sitting, ignoring the stack of books and the other people sitting nearby who were trying to leave the classroom. She plopped down on a stool, spinning and looking at the other girl expectantly. Yeah, this looked to be the right person. "Hey, Baker Girl."

Seren had been sitting at the desk where she usually sat, working on a few problems for the homework due Monday. She wasn't in a rush to leave, because she had found if she took the time to do this... Well, first off, she did not get caught in the damn crush at the door. Less likely to get a book bag to the gut, or have someone get an unwanted grope in... She HAD had that happen once or twice, and it did not please her when it happened. Especially since she had not been able to tell which of the dickheads around her had been the one to ********' touch her a**. She knew she had a nice a**. That did not make it ok. Secondly, she had found that getting a head start meant more time for herself at home, time to cook or read, or even sneak out on an occasional night to a nearby park to go star gazing. Between these two benefits, and the fact that her next class wasn't for a bit... and this professor let her hang around a little... it was worth it to her.

When someone sat on the stool besides her, she was a little confused, but kept working. Until the stranger spoke, and Seren lifted her head in surprise. Baker Girl? What? Who on earth was calling her that?

She stared, a little confused, for a moment, then she remembered the person who stole the bundt cake she had made. And the PAN the cake was in, too. She had been so glad when her student she'd been tutoring had found her later and returned the pan to her. She wasn't made of money, after all! She only had TWO bundt pans, and the other one one of those bundlet pans designed to make small ones. She couldn't afford to replace the one she'd had any time soon. She'd actually almost cried, later. Finally, after a long moment of staring, she went "Uh. Hi. What... brings you here?"

She internally winced at how dumb she sounded.

Her white-sleeved arms hit the table elbow-first, and Pythia casually inspected her bright red fingernails, waiting for Baker Girl to find her wits and respond. Ah. There. Finally, she didn't have all day- not even for a bundt cake. "Uh? Hi." a neatly manicured brow went up, and Pythia was faced with a decision. To judge? Or not to judge? She supposed it wasn't Baker Girl's fault. As long as she could cook, Pythia didn't need her to think. Other people might, of course, but that was hardly the redhead's concern.

"You brought me here, Baker Girl. I know, you feel honored, slightly privileged." her hand waved lazily. "Long story short, since neither of us have time for the minutiae- I'm hungry, and you make a mean baked good. Is it your job, a side business, a boon to the wee folk with no bakey skills, who do I have to kill to get a cookie?" She would push any number of people off a bridge if so commanded for a good hunk of gluten. Just watch.

Her heel tapped against the floor, loudly and slightly impatient. Okay, it had been a whole like- 3 seconds, and Pythia still didn't know what she wanted to know. This was going to be a problem. Patience really needed to pay off, because she had it in the negatives, and whoever blessed people with virtues didn't even give her a dollop of that s**t.

Seren watched the reactions, brows just lifting slowly. The redhead had to be insane, there was no other explanation for it. Especially with the honored/privileged comment. Who the hell was this odd woman, who called her baker girl and... Well. She liked the cake that much, had she? Seren's cake had driven someone to come hunt her down. For more baked goods. She couldn't decide whether or not to laugh, carefully get off the stool and FLEE, or just stare some more.

After another moment, she finally said "Unfortunately, I don't have any baked goods on me at the moment. You should have found me during my lunch hour, I had some then but... Well, I ate them because it was. Ya know. My lunch." She gave a slight, almost apologetic shrug. "I try not to have snacks in my bag after lunch, I just end up with an upset stomach if I'm eating between meals too much."

She considered, thoughtfully, then added "I should have more Monday? I ran out, and..." She gestured at her giant stack of books for her courses. "I won't have time to bake until this weekend, due to homework. And... it's a hobby, I suppose, cooking? But yeah. Until then, I won't have any." Well, there was her tiny stash of 'Encouragement Cookies' for the days she felt like breaking down crying but THOSE were in the bedroom, and no one was getting those. No one. "And my name is Seren, not Baker Girl."

Her hand fell, her nails clicking on the desk. Then one lifted, pressing back down with another loud, sharp sound. Then her heel drummed again against the tile floor. And she just watched Baker Girl, considering her, head tilted. It was irritating, on one hand; she hadn't asked for Seren's lunchtime tale or her dietary conundrums about eating between meals. On the other hand, it was nice to actually be talking to someone who didn't have a face like Pythia was somehow stopping them from relieving their IBS.

There was possible merit and reward to be found in discussion with this Baker Girl, and Pythia weighed and measured the pros and cons of continuing the line of questioning, eyes narrowing. Finally, her hyper-focus slid away from the other woman. Her eyes slid to the heavens- or the stained, old ceiling- and Pythia...

Sighed. Not a small sigh of disappointment, but a full-throttle eye-rolling sigh of malcontent and disgust that contorted her whole face for the span of a solid couple seconds. "What kind of homework would keep you from baking?" Seriously, she knew the other woman was in some kind of special space science stuff- but having to do homework instead of cooking and eating? Gross.

Astrophysics sounded cool, but sparkly space dust wasn't better than a brownie.

"So what you're saying," she replied with what she thought sounded like infinite patience and absolutely no chill, "is you need someone to help you with your homework while you bake for me?" Cause she could so some of that, probably. "Cause I'm hungry. You know. Like you were, at lunch."

There. Reaching out. Empathising.

She was totally on point today.

Seren watched the other more, brows inching slowly upwards. What on earth was WITH this girl? Did she not understand that people had to study, do their homework, and do well, or risk failing? How did this girl even begin to think this was a normal, or even appropriate, way to act towards someone who was essentially a stranger?

The sigh had her eyes widening in disbelief. What the ever living ********? Was this girl some sort of entitled kid who never knew what it was like to have to actually EARN a living, to feed themselves because there was no other way to get food? She glanced over her outfit, and came to the conclusion that this was, actually, probably the case.

"What kind... The kind that keeps me enrolled in the classes that I need to be sure I don't lose my scholarship, so I can continue to pursue the degree that I have wanted since I was like 7." She had no better answer then that.

And then the question came and her brows flew up so high, it was a miracle they hadn't merged with her hairline. "Erm, no I'm saying I need me to do it myself, so I don't risk being accused of plagiarizing or something similar that could get me expelled, actually." She had no idea what to do with this woman, who hadn't even given Seren her name. "And... I'm sorry? I can't exactly feed you right now. Once I've finished these problems, I have another class. I won't be cooking ANYTHING until I go home to make dinner. And that's gonna be tteokbukki, which is nothing like a baked good. It's more like a spicy stew."

Why was she just being stared at? Pythia met the other woman's gaze, unflinching, expression as bland and non-judgmental and patient as she could try to make it. It was difficult, really, going against pretty much every bone in her body. Still, she pasted a quick smile on her face, sweet and dimpled. kept it there, even as Baker Girl's eyes widened with some... understanding? Preparation to answer the question?

She adjusted her white suit jacket, tugging at the sleeve of one arm, then her lapel, returning her bright eyes to the other woman's face. "Details," she said once Seren had finished talking about her childhood dreams or something- oh, the information was filed away, but it wasn't currently relevant to Pythia eating. Or was it? "I never wanted to play the politics game, I just wanted to rule the world." Games weren't fun unless Pythia was winning. She had a long way to go on that front. She certainly didn't do her homework for it.

Maybe that was why her grades were solid B-negatives. If she did her homework instead of being self-indulgent? Eh.

The magic word, the one that pulled Pythia from irritation at not getting her way to genuine interest- was tteokbukki. Spicy. She leaned in, face stern, eyes bright. "How spicy?" her inquiry was sharp. "Are we talking 'melt your balls off' hot, or the typical, boring 'Oh no, a red pepper looked at me, wah!' kind of hot?"

It mattered. And as she stared intently at Baker Girl, she really hoped that how much it mattered was being clearly, though non-verbally, communicated.

The word 'details' almost had Seren getting up and leaving. If it weren't that it would take too long to pack up and go to demonstrate a proper huff, and there was NO way she was leaving her things where this crazy woman could take them hostage... She clearly had no respect for other people, so using her books and homework against her seemed entirely within the realm of possibility. Certainly she'd known others who were overly self centered who would, when she was younger. Her blue eyes darkened, however, with her irritation at the rude dismissive response to Seren's explanation.

She had to control the urge to snort mockingly at the other girl's ambition to rule the world. It was hard to control, but she did it. Than again, Seren had had YEARS to perfect the art of not showing everything she thought on her face. But she found herself thinking the odds were low.

The reaction to her plans for dinner had Seren blinking slowly. The way the other girl reacted to spicy food seemed almost as intense as her need for a cookie, or other baked good. There was a moment where Seren considered lying and saying 'oh not TOO spicy,' because it might make the other girl go away.

But Seren hated lying if she could avoid it, and decided not to bother with it. "Depends on how spicy I want to make it. Most days, I make it fairly intense, because Korean food is properly done hot hot hot." She did that little bit with a silly tune, and a tiny bit of jazz hands, almost like it was habit. "Why, how spicy do you like your food?" Her brows rose at the question.

Some small part of her twitched- it was probably her right cheek, dimpling with humor. The other woman's face was blank- too carefullt blank, and it made some little bit of evil low in Pythia twitch, wondering what she might have to do to get a proper reaction. Another time, perhaps- too blank could also be dangerously blank, and anger wouldn't serve Pythia's purpose for Baker Girl.

Either her snack would be poisoned, or worse, it wouldn't happen at all. And she was hungry.

Bright teal eyes glittering, she focused her mind on the words that Baker Girl- Seren- was saying. How spicy do you like your food? Pythia's smile was full, and fierce. "I like my food so spicy that..." she paused, considering. "If the sun," hands rose to make a little ball in the air, "Made a baby with the molten core of our planet, or better yet, with the surface of Venus," the ball turned to wiggling fingers, "that baby then being set on fire by a dragon or some s**t," fingers flared out in imitation of wings, "that spawn would take a bite and then mourn that the food was too hot and spicy for them." And just in case there were any doubts, she continued. "I like my food so hot that it makes grown men cry like a baby when the juice touches their finger, and the Carolina Reaper feels shame." she leaned in. "I want it so hot that I think every part of my body above the toes has been lit on fire."

No, she didn't sound crazy at all.

Aria Starstone
PostPosted: Sun Jun 03, 2018 8:45 pm

The dimple confused Seren, though again... She didn't show it. Confusion was a weakness, one that could be exploited by those who preyed on the weak and vulnerable, and she did not want to be exploited ever again, thank the universe very much. She just watched her, waiting to see what the insane woman would come up with next.

The answer to Seren's question had her tilting her head, brows lifted just a little. The hand motions were... strange at best, because they seemed to be just this shy of obscene at least once or twice, somehow, in her eyes. Possibly around the point where the crazy lady was talking about making a baby.

Finally, after a long moment of consideration, Seren said "Well, I don't happen to have any Dragon's Breath chili peppers, which as far as I know are the current top runner for spiciest, out doing the Reaper. Then again, I'm not sure they're on market, nor am I sure they will be, given there is concern that the level of heat in them could kill someone. I don't even have any reapers at home, buuuuuut that's partly because their flavor just does not match the other ingredients in tteokbukki. But I'm probably going to use a fair amount of gochujang, which is a fermented hot pepper paste." She gave a shrug and tilted her head. "So there it is."

Pythia was hungry. She had expressed this repeatedly, but Baker Girl was talking about food anyways. No baked goods- she had gotten it already that Baker Girl was paranoid about grades and feeding Pythia cakes wasn't her idea of a nice, relaxing distraction. Well- certainly Seren's loss, in that case. But all hope didn't seem to be lost, since the mention of dinner had turned into a full-blown conversation on how spicy Pythia liked her food.

This was a good thing, and definitely a win, regardless of the outcome. So Pythia kept her winning beam on her face, eyes lighting as Baker Girl seemed to make a small concession- I don't happen to have any Dragon's Breath chili peppers.

Did that mean- that perhaps a dinner invitation was close at hand? How far should she push? Should she push? Of course she should- she was Pythia, after all, and what were boundaries for, if not to be pushed? "Kochoojana," she repeated, as if she'd had the pronunciation anything close to right, and leaned in. "A fair amount of it sounds like an adventure, and adventures can certainly be thrilling. How about this, then, Bakeren, you make dinner and I'll bring a nice pre-made dessert from some bakery, because I don't want to accidentally give you food poisoning by trying to cook something myself."

Food poisoning for Baker girl would lead to no studying. No studying, bad grades, bad grades, no baking. Or bad temper, which was no baking, or- well. Whatever the pattern, poisoning Baker Girl meant no further cakes. Unacceptable. "I can be there any time after 4." she leaned her cheek on her fist and stared at Seren with an expression bordering on adoring- Seren, who was the potential provider of food.

Seren managed... barely... to not wince at the attempt to pronounce gochujang. Oh the mangled way it was pronounced was terrible, and it made her want to correct the other girl, but... it might be better to just use the word casually a few times, and hope the other managed to figure it out, because eventually it was going to drive Seren nuts.

She blinked at the attempt to weasel a dinner invitation out of her. Well, pre-baked goods would be... Not as good as anything Seren could do herself, unless it was a really good bakery, but it would be nice to have something sweet to eat. And she was often lonely. It had been a long time since anyone had been into her apartment for an actual visit. The closest had been the recent incidents with her neighbor, neither of which were visits. First aid was not a visit, and coming to claim his dog was also not a visit... and that had been the only people who had been in her apartment, other than herself, since she moved in. Her brother had... suggested he might visit, once, but so far nothing had come of that.

Things were still very strained between them.

Finally, after considering the invitation, Seren gave a slow nod. "Alright, that sounds good. I have class until 3:30, then a tutoring session... Should be an hour..." The timing stuff was mumbled, as she was clearly working out in her head when would be a good time. "Cooking this usually takes... hmmm... Yeah, how about 6:00? That'll give me time to get home, change, and get dinner mostly ready." She paused, before adding "I don't really drink, so if you want something other than tea, juice or water, you'll want to bring it along for yourself, because I don't keep anything else at home. Too expensive, and drinking alone sucks anyways."

She pulled out a scrap of paper and scribbled her address down. It was over towards the edge of town, about a half hour bus ride from campus. It was NOT a wealthy neighborhood... One of those 'a bit run down but generally safe' areas. Her apartment was on the seventh floor. "There's an elevator, if you don't want to take the stairs... It's kinda old, but it works." She said, just to be fair. She generally took the stairs, it was a good leg workout, especially on days when she had to keep her run short.

Mission. Successful. Blinking aside, after some consideration the other woman gave a nod, and Pythia's lips curved in a far more genuine smile than anything else that she'd given yet so far. It was brief, however, settling under a careful mask of catlike satisfaction and then faint neutrality as she managed to control her excitement. "I don't drink either," she said easily, "though it is good to know not to bring you a bottle of wine or something. Unless wine goes well with it- I'm sure my mother would be willing to drink anything we didn't finish."

Her victory was small and not the optimal plan- optimal having been that Baker Girl had something in her bag, or had hopped up immediately to do Pythia's bidding, but 6:00 wasn't too far away, and she would just spend her dinner money on lunch and a thing of cookies, and it would wind up all on the up. Perhaps even better off because dinner was going to be spicy. And not like some weak little 'spicy chicken sandwich' that called itself spicy because it had dated a jalapeno in high school. Spicy as in Seren had said Korean food and that it was supposed to be hot hot hot.

Pythia watched the other girl jot down her address, and reached into her own bag to pull out one of her own bright and clean business cards. She didn't write on it, just critically checked that it was her cell phone number, and not one with her home line, before sliding it across the desk to Seren with two fingers. She'd had a couple with her home line she'd passed out on accident, and that had been an adventure. Her mother had so very many questions when Pythia received phone calls, always looking or some small advantage.

"Since you're planning on changing, may I presume that dinner is to be a business casual situation, then, rather than anything formal?" Ophira liked to dress for dinner when they had guests. Seren hadn't so far stuck her as the type, but it was better to be prepared in case she had to go home and change, herself. Then again, if there were to be stairs she may want to anyway. White suits were hardly optimal for physical exertion. The elevator would be nice, but old... old usually meant dirty.

The address wasn't terribly far away from where Pythia lived with her parents, though further out from campus that Pythia's own address. Perhaps she'd walk- getting there as Pythia would be good exercise if she changed into something more on the casual side first, and then after dinner she would likely be powering up anyways, and Imbrium would hardly notice the late night distance.

A business card? Changing for dinner into business casual? What kind of wealthy lifestyle did this woman live? Seren DID notice, however, that she now knew the name of her dinner guest (Since Pythia never had actually said it, but the business card at least dealt with that.) She wasn't sure what to say for a long moment, trying to figure out a way to explain that this wasn't what Seren had meant at all.

Finally, feeling a little breathless and stunned, but still able to speak, she said "No, no! Not at all my meaning. I just, when I get home, like to change into clothing that is more comfortable and relaxed. T-shirt, yoga pants, that kind of thing. I'm not at all formal at home. I like to just enjoy my evening. I prefer to look more... professionalish? I guess? At school, especially on days when I have tutoring to do. So... you know, you can wear whatever you feel comfortable in, really?"

She tucked the card into her wallet as the safest place to keep it from getting it all bent up. She didn't notice the address was close to hers, because she didn't pay a lot of attention to the places that weren't on the bus lines she needed, unless she had a reason to go there. "Anyways, I need to get to my next class, so... I'll see you at six?" She began to put her stuff away, not showing the disappointment she felt inside at the fact that her little bit of extra homework time had been totally blown. In fact, her expression was completely calm.

If she had half a clue what Baker Girl was thinking, Pythia's ego would have carried her to atmo. Since her father had declared bankruptcy, and her mother had been forced to pare down on their variety of trappings, it seemed that life had become a game of 'dressing for the job you want' but with lifestyle. What was it- the law of attraction? Imagine the wealth, and it would appear.

Instead of effervescent joy that the method seemed to be working, however, she was pressed with vague irritation and the overjoyous, loud rumble of her stomach, insistent that she was still hungry now- regardless of her dinner plans. Yet it was still Pythia's turn to be slightly startled and stunned by Seren mentioning- Tshirts? Yoga pants? When guests were planned? Though Pythia supposed she was more of a surprise-slash-accidental guest that a formal get-together. But there was no way that she could dress to match- she didn't even own a pair of yoga pants or sweat pants except for those atrocious workout clothes, and those were neither comfortable nor something she would be caught dead in by someone she might meet again.

"Understood." she gave Seren a bright, slightly-victorious smile over the thunderous yodel of her internal organs again demanding their meal. "I'll see you at six, then. I'm looking forward to it. My cell number is on the card- let me know if you need me to bring something other than massive amounts of processed sugar." And as Seren began to stuff her things into some bag, or satchel, or something vaguely holder-shaped, Pythia gripped the paper with the address, pushed off her seat, and wandered off without actually saying goodbye.

What was the point, when she'd see her soon?
