Where the ******** had the time gone?! It felt like only yesterday Izume recalled meeting Lovina in the cafeteria after class one afternoon. It'd been the start of something amazing, or at least Izzy considered it as such. She'd certainly enjoyed the late night adventures and the trips into the city on the weekends. It'd been great to finally find someone to forge a real connection with. Not just a classmate or an acquaintance, but someone Izzy felt she could call a friend. And then, she didn't really know what happened. Part of it was Exams rolling in and an increase in workload. Part of it was Izume starting her violin lessons again in preparation for a post grad audition with the city symphony. Of course Lovi had gotten busy as well, and under the combined weight of so many external forces, it was easy to just sort of...lose touch. When Izume finally realized the time between texts and visits was growing longer and longer it was alarming. Determined to put an end to the degeneration of their friendship, the shorter of the two girls wrapped up her violin practice a bit early, pocketed her phone, and headed for the lawns, and a particularly nice, shady tree the two had sat beneath a number of times. On the way she sent a text, asking Lovi to meet her there.

Lovi still hadn't figured out how to balance school, friendships, and Negaverse stuff all in a single day. She couldn't even figure it out in a week. Every week was different with exams chewing up her time or people having total meltdowns or suddenly her quota creeps up on her out of nowhere, leaving the girl breathless and sleep-deprived most of the time.
But it wasn't all doom and gloom — Lovi got way more fit thanks to the Negaverse routine, and she got much better at coordination. Now she could stand on one foot for three minutes with a little bit of maneuvering around. It was slow, careful, practiced, but way better than she was before she met the blonde in the park. She was also working on her language so she could come up with better comebacks than the ones she fed to that one chauvinist page. She even started looking into popular feminist tumblrs like the-daily-feminist and tried to poke her head into the huge world of postgraduate academia. But Moira Donegan, she realized, was way over her head. Lastly there was trying to impress Ms. Rey, and that was just with the Negaverse!
Soletting Izume slide for a bit definitely wasn't intentional, even if it might've looked that way. Lovi was sorta expecting to walk into one of those group disasters that happen when people just drift apart in high school — the horrible ones with the passive-aggressive backtalk and fake smiles — but the text never took her in that direction. It actually seemed super nice and mature.
The text from Izzy brought her back to their tree, which was already a surprise. Winter came and ruined it for them, but they never really found the time during the spring to come back to it. Especially with Negaverse stuff! Lovi felt her face heat up as she approached the long, angular branches. How could she be so forgetful? Or put things off for Negaverse stuff? Friends deserved better than that. Besides, the Negaverse stuff was probably just until she graduated, then they'd discharge her or whatever. She and Izzy could find more time then.
So when she popped around the corner, tired and hastily dressed in a cream blouse with pink undershirt and a striped miniskirt. Crouching with her knees together, she gave her friend a nudge. "Hey! I'm so sorry it's been so long. What a year, huh? It feels like so much has happened!" Lovi gave an exasperated sigh.
"Talk about overwork. I got pulled into this really intensive extracurricular stuff to save my grades. Boring." Even though sometimes it wasn't.

Her back against the thick trunk, Izume had her nose buried in a book as Lovi sat herself primly down beside her and gave her shoulder a nudge. It brought the smaller girl's attention up, a smile already spreading easily along full lips as she folded down the page she'd been on and put the book on the ground beside her. "Dude, seriously it's not just you. I've been crazy busy, too. Between trying to get my grades up to make the 'rents happy, and keeping up with violin," she groaned audibly, head tipping back as she shoulders sagged in the perfect vision of exhausted defeat. "Ugh!" She slouched to the side, cheek pillowed on the other girl's shoulder. "Is it just me, or does it just keep getting harder year after year?" Which she supposed made since, begrudgingly, but that didn't mean she had to be happy about it. Eyes rolling up, she pegged Lovi with an interested look. "What extracurricular thing you have going on? Is it like extra credit?" A thin brow lifted. "Cause I'll tell you what, I could use some of that right about now." Her grades were hurting. She knew the material, whizzed through her tests, but homework? Nope. Couldn't seem to manage it. Her mind just would not sit still long enough to deal with that s**t.

Lovi giggled when Izzy made a show of her frustrations. Tempted, Lovi reached out with claws bared for that exposed stomach. She tried to give it a thorough tickle, but the gesture was over before she could go with it.
But Izume had more to say, and Lovi nodded along contentedly. Her arm slithered up between the pair and snaked its way around Izzy's shoulders to the other side. There, she played idly with the cuff of Izzy's shirt and tapped thoughtless patterns into her shoulder. "It totally gets harder. Like, I htink they plan it that way. We get older and more independent, so they gotta keep us down somehow. Like, ******** us for making our own opinions. Ugh, I'm starting to sound like one of those radical geeks in one of our government classes. 'More power to the people! Romano's Students Deserve Better!'" She pumped her fist in the air before her enthusiasm collapsed into a laugh.
"But, um, thankfully nobody in my extracurricular is like that. I don't even think they're all from Romano's. Or are like, alum… Not aluminum. When they used to go here and then graduate. What's that called? Oh! Alumni! But yeah, thanks be that they don't have that stick up their butt." And she already whetted Izzy's interest in her extracurricular, so what harm was there in pushing the boundary a little? Ms. Rey didn't have to know, and Izzy was great at keeping secrets. Heck, they kept each other's lives secret from one another by complete accident.
"So, it's sorta like extra credit but it's not? It's more like… Say I do really good at my extracurricular. Then the person who oversees me will, like, go talk to some of my Romano's teachers and convince them to give me a few extra points here or there. Cuz I guess my extracurricular benefits Romano's but I don't really know how." Lovi gave a shrug, then straightened up and nudged herself closer to her friend.
Her voice dropped low, gaining the quality of a promise. "You're not gonna believe me, but they basically turned me into a super hero. Like, no lie, I can jump on top of buildings. And all I need to do is gather a little energy for them. How gucc is that?"

The smaller girl shifted just enough to Lovi to move her arm, and then settled in comfortably against her side, cheek moving against her shoulder before stilling again. Weeks and months had seemed to fly by, and there had always been the want to reach out, to check on the Lovi or even just to touch base, but more often than not the opportunity had slipped by. She'd remember while lying in bed, too late to risk a text, and then curse into her pillow and promise to do it the next day. Only the next day had always been just as busy as the last, and the cycle repeated time and time again. Every so often she'd manage to get a text out at a decent time, but one or the other of them would fail to keep up the pace, and then they'd be back to racing through the days. Sitting here like this, to Izzy it felt like someone had hit pause on their lives. For this moment, as long as it lasted, they could breath, and relax, and shift the weight from their shoulders to remember what had brought them together as friends in the first place. The gentle tap-tap-tap against her shoulder was soothing, and the smaller girl let loose a long, settling sigh as she listened to Lovi talk. Opening her mouth only once through the bulk of it to answer a question, but closing it again as she figured it out for herself. It made her laugh, and at some point she snaked her own arm down around Lovi's hips. The lowered voice sharpened Izume's attention. She tipped her head back so she could see the other girl out the corner of her eyes as she spoke, but lifted her head completely at the mention of super heros and jumping buildings. For a second or two she thought it was a joke--and why not? But the little smile faded and brows dipped. "Wait, you're serious? How the ******** does that happen?" And where do I sign up? "You get extra credit, and physical boosts, and you just gather energy...what does that even mean?"

"It was all really crazy when it happened," Lovi continued, her voice low and filled with magic. "Like one minute I was in class, and the next I got called to the office. And I figured it was something bad, you know? It usually is — somebody bitching that I was making fun of them or slacking on my chores or something stupid like that. When I got to the office, I saw Ms. Rey there. And she doesn't teach here? Like, she does stuff and then once in a blue moon I see her here.
"But anyway, she was being totally cryptic about everything, saying she could help me out but I have to do something for her and I have to be super quiet about it. So don't tell anyone, okay?" She gave Izume's shoulder a squeeze.
"All she did was, like, look at my files and tell me she thought she could help me and I could help her. I just had to wait for this boy to come by and put his hand through my chest. Like, through my chest. And not in a creepy way? Like he wasn't trying to grab my boobs or anything, and just went straight through the bone. It was so disturbing." Lovi shuddered at the memory of it. Looking down and watching some stranger's wrist sticking out of her chest was like something out of a horror movie. Maybe a B-rated one in hindsight, but it's way different to experience that in person! "And then it really hurt? Like, I dunno if you've ever broken a bone, but… It's sorta like that on steroids. And all through your body but mainly in your chest? And then when it was done, I had this gorgeous new uniform on that reminded me of army girls from like, World War 2." She wanted to show Izzy, but how could they do that out in the open?
"But basically, while I'm like that, I get really super powerful. Like that's when I can jump as high as I want and run really fast. And I totally wish it extended to, like, daily life, because imagine how much easier PE would be? Instead I only get to use it for stuff like energy draining, which is where I just touch someone and imagine I'm pulling their energy out? Like picking loose hairs off the back of someone's shirt. And then this little purple orb shows up in my hand and they feel a little tired and that's it. I just turn that ball in to Ms. Rey and she gives me credit."

Understandably skeptical, Izume's face showed her doubts as she looked up at the other girl. However, the more Lovi spoke, the easier it became to buy into what the other teen was saying. It was still far fetched, like something out of a summer blockbuster, or a comic book, but hadn't crazy things been happening in this city for as long as anyone could remember? Maybe it was possible, and if it was how did she get her hands on the same sort of deal? Granted, there was certainly a few less glamorous aspects of the story, mainly having a hand shoved into your chest. How even was that supposed to work? And then there was the pain. Not just a little discomfort, but worse than broken bones. Izzy had never so much as fractured a toe, let alone broken anything. So she wasn't exactly in a hurry for that, but if what Lovi said was true, and it only lasted for a moment, and when it was over you were better, stronger... "I want that." She hadn't meant to say it allowed. It'd just slipped out, barely above a whisper. She didn't take it back, though, after realizing she'd said it. Instead she turned at lovi's side, hands planted on the grass beneath her, her chin on the other girl's shoulder.

"Huh?" Lovi barely caught the words before her brain finally caught up with her. "You mean you want to join?" She wasn't really expecting that.
She wasn't really expecting to talk about it, either. Ms. Rey was really clear that it had to be a secret, and that going to anyone else about her Negaverse affiliations was a huge risk. Lovi shifted, rubbing her heels into the dirt until she trawled out little trenches. Did she mess up? Would she be caught between acting like everything was as usual with Ms. Rey and then switching gears to try to get Izzy into the Negaverse? Could she, like, push her hand through Izzy's chest and bring her into the Negaverse that way?
No — she didn't think she could do anything like that to her friend. Putting her hand in someone's chest was insanely weird, and it looked wrong, and it felt awful, even if the effects were worth it. "Ummm…" She shifted her feet again. Back and forth and back and forth and back and forth they wedged beside the grass. "Hmm. Oh wait! I think I have an idea." She tightened her grip around her friend, her fingers pressing harmless divots into Izzy's skin.
"So, like, I could talk to Ms. Rey and tell her that my friend seems like a really good fit for the Negaverse. And just pitch you that way? Then she might be like, 'oh yeah, bring her over and we'll have a look' and maybe do an interview or something. There wasn't really an interview for me, so much as making sure I was okay with it? So you'll probably get the same?" Lovi gritted her teeth against all the uncertainties she spoke. "But nobody has to know that I told you. Or that you know what the Negaverse is about. And then we'd have more time to spend together! We could, like, patrol around sometimes and drain energy and do whatever we want!" And it let them get free of Romano's and all its oppressive tasks.
Anxiously, she turned bright eyes to her friend. "What do you think?"

A flicker of an apology flashed across Izzy's face as she read the anxiety in Lovi's. She certainly hadn't meant to put her friend in an awkward situation, but here they were, and Izzy could have pretended as if she'd never heard any of this, but the longing of it wouldn't just disappear. If anything, it'd probably just get more intense. What Lovi had, the help with her grades and the powers, Izzy wanted that too. And if it's let them spend more time together... Crossing paths in the halls and in class just wasn't enough. Even if they'd both been busy in their own rights, Izzy missed the other girl. Things were just better when they were together. Maybe time apart had made her forget that a little bit, but sitting here now, talking, it was clear as day to the shorter girl. So she waited patiently, or maybe anxiously, for Lovi to say something again, eyes glued on that pretty face as she thought it over. Ready in that instant to tell her not to worry about it, that she didn't want to put her in that pain if it was going to be a problem. The words were on her tongue when the brunette got an idea. And what an idea. Izume felt get shoulders relax, anxiwry bleeding away again, and she grinned up at her friend. "That sounds great!" Not just the prospect of joining as well, but of getting to spend her evenings with the other girl. Having more time together. "Just tell me what I have to do." What ever would make her look like a perfect fit.

Lovi giggled at her friend's enthusiasm. It felt like they were getting into a secret club together — like what sororities were probably like. And Lovi didn't have an older sister who was ever in a sorority or anything like that, but she'd seen some of those romcom flicks about college girls, and that was close enough to what the Negaverse could be like for them. They'd get to work together and support each other and they already lived together and they could get guidance from Ms. Rey… What wasn't to love?
"Umm, I need to know why you're a good candidate. Like, do you have awesome marks in PE class? Cuz if you're totally lit on the physical, that helps a ton. And maybeeeee… Other grades, I think? Like if you're really good at that military history class that I always sleep through." And while that class was a damn bore, Lovi figured it might be pretty important to some fake military thing.
"But I think that's it? I don't really know. I'll definitely see what Ms. Rey says about what she looks for. I could be like, 'hey, I want to help out with recruiting!' or whatever and see if she's got pointers that way. Then we just make you look like what she wants, right? It could be fun!" Even if it wasn't totally honest, not that it really mattered. People robbed and lied and did whatever they wanted pretty often.
"I'm just so excited!" Love wrapped both arms around Izume for a fierce hug. She hummed out her giddiness into the action. Afterward, she seized Izzy's hands in her own and gave them a firm squeeze. "What do you say we go back inside and really start working on this?" It'd be way easier to start by going through Izzy's grades and finding the highlights.

This was really happening. Izume grinned giddily at her friend, giggling along. It was going to be great! They wouldn't have to worry about their grades as much, and they'd get to spend more time together. Maybe even wrestle up some free time for themselves besides what little they were afforded now, or managed to carve out for themselves by sneaking out at night. Which, by the sounds of it, they'd be doing more often now. She brought her focus outward again at the questions, thinking about her own merits and what might make her a good candidate for whatever this was. "Um, I'm alright in PE. Not really great at sports, but pretty quick on my feet." She was also prone to diving into things headlong. Fearless, to the point of being a bit reckless. "I get great marks on my tests, if she's looking at those. It's just the homework...ugh." She loathed it. The time it took. Cutting into what little free time they had. The hug was sudden and unexpected, but Izzy her stomach give a happy little flip. The grin was back, bigger than ever, and she returned the hug with enthusiasm before Lovi as drawing back to take her hands. What do I say? What else was there to say? "Let's do it!"
