Physical Description: The first thing you notice about Tokki is the shoulder-length fountain of dark mahogany-brown dreadlocks, usually kept under control with a wide headband/scarf of some kind. His face is oval and lightly tanned, with warm brown eyes possessed of pronounced epicanthic folds on the lids, a button nose, and an impish smile. At 6', Tokki's got a deceptively athletic build; he looks scrawny but moves like an active teenager, all foldy-bendy bouncy energy. His voice is a bright mid-tenor, often talking in enthusiastic, non-stop ALL CAPS.
Tokki dresses like he grabbed the first things he could reach without regard for whether it matched or not (very often the case). And most of it is permanently grass- and dirt-stained at the knees and elbows from working amongst his herbs. He wears simple shirts with the sleeves rolled up, loose comfortable pants that he usually keeps rolled up at the hems to his knees, and thick boots to protect his feet from rocks and thorns. He also wears heavy gloves when working with his plants and a tool belt across his body for things like pruning shears and such.
Personality: Tokki comes off as a sweetly stupid, quirky space cadet of a boy, charming in his own way, and as blithely self-centered as a flit, with a similar attention span. Exuberant and friendly, he's one of those genuine "people person" people who'll talk the face off of anyone within earshot, whether he knows them or not. It's more than just wanting to hear himself talk, too -- the stuff he babbles on about are the things he loves, gardening and herbs and medicine. The "sweetly stupid" outer persona he's cultivated since his apprenticeship only adds to the idiot savant impression. Getting annoyed with him is like kicking a dumb but adorable puppy.
He's a whole lot sharper than he seems on the surface, however. While Tokki really isn't as stupid as he can come across, his "smarts" are more common sense and deductive reasoning (aka asking a lot of questions and adding two plus two) than book-intelligence. A keen observer of the world around him, he pays attention and remembers things and trusts his instincts to steer him in the right direction.
Despite his occasionally manic behavior, Tokki has an air of serenity about him that shows through primarily when he's talking about his herbs or cooking up a fresh batch of numbweed gel. It's not simple-mindedness; don't let the "sweetly stupid" facade fool you. It's that he's an uncomplicated soul, a man of the earth who doesn't require much out of life beyond a patch of soil to till and the sun on his face. His serene demeanor is contagious, too, plenty effective for calming down the most agitated patient. He would have made a great mindhealer if the Master Healers hadn't thought him too dumb.
Being an herbalist means Tokki knows about the medicinal properties of all sorts of plants, not just numbweed and fellis. He cultivates those primarily, especially now with the return of Thread and the demand for the stuff by Weyr and Hold alike, but he also grows various other herbs like hazel and ging and needlethorn, among others. He even has his own klah tree. Mmm, fresh klah. He loves his job.
Tokki knows how to heal with his herbs, too, but he does far less of that than simply growing them. Still, when the opportunity arises, he is at the ready with salves and antiseptic washes and serene demeanor to make things right.
Positive Trait List super friendly, blessed with common sense, excellent memory, quick learner
Negative Trait List comes off as "sweetly stupid", too talkative, easily distracted, blithely self-centered
History:
Born on a farming cothold in Keroon, Tokki grew up surrounded by green growing things as far as the eye could see. He spent most of his childhood following his father, a Farmercrafter, around, learning about all the different plants that grew on the farm. Plants fascinated the youth; he would adventure off by himself, apart from his brothers and sisters, and make up stories about his plant friends. Tokki's parents thought he would grow up to be a farmer like they were, and were prepared to send him to the Crafthall, when he hurt himself badly falling from a tree. The Healer that came used various concoctions to fix him up, explaining to the boy everything that she was doing; Tokki was spellbound. As soon as he was well enough, he announced to his family that was what he wanted to do: become a Healer.
Tokki was sent at age 12 to the Healer Hall at Fort Hold to become an apprentice. The transition from farmland and greenery to major Hold wasn't easy for him at all. He was the outcast amongst the other apprentices, bullied for being the weird kid from Keroon. In self-defense, he created a "sweetly stupid" exterior to protect himself from the worst of it. The hills and forests surrounding Fort Hold were his real refuge, and he spent as much time there as he could, daydreaming that he was back on the farm with his plant friends.
The only saving grace during his apprenticeship was how well he performed as a student of herbal medicine. His masters could only scratch their heads and wonder how this simple kid managed to not only pick up but understand on a deep level what they were teaching him. Tokki, meanwhile, maintained his "sweetly stupid" demeanor, even as he absorbed everything they threw at him. And at 19 Turns he walked the tables to become a Journeyman Herbalist.
Just in time for Thread's return.
That first 'Fall put Tokki's Healer skills to the test on all fronts: boiling numbweed for use as a salve, using the HNO3 canisters to kill any Thread that reached the ground (and there was a lot of it) to save the medicinal gardens, and general Healer work. It was grim, it was heartbreaking and panic-inducing, but he learned how to treat Threadscore wounds firsthand as opposed to simply reading about it. He counted it as invaluable from an educational perspective, and oh yeah, he saved a few lives in the process.
Tokki's current Journeyman assignment is his first: assisting an Herbalist Master on the wild Western Continent in growing medicinal plants, mainly numbweed and fellis, for other Healers at Western Hold and for the Weyr. He's been at it for a couple of Turns now, pretty much since Thread returned. It's a good life.
