Lieutenant Cornetite was starting to question why he had agreed to the 'training session' with Captain Uvarovite and his beast. He knew why, deep down, but that initial rational thought was starting to seem less and less sane as the session progressed. Senshi didn't have beasts at their disposal. Most of them seemed to be teenage girls who were barely threatening on their own, let alone when magic was involved.

His eyes closed as he leaned back against the crystal formation that he'd ducked behind in an attempt to avoid last attack, taking a moment to catch his breath and ponder his life choices. They weren't entirely unarmed as they might have been out in the field. Uvarovite had at least provided them with 'training weapons' similar to things they might have been able to use as makeshift defenses out on the streets-- a shield resembling a trash can lid, a basic wooden staff and a 'club' that favored a baseball bat in appearance more than anything else. They were enough to deflect blows with the beast instructed to go easy on them. They weren't enough to make him think they had a chance at actually winning.

This wasn't about winning, though. It was about learning how to hold one's own, and that's what they were doing. "Nit-- how are you holding up over there?" He called out, regretting the words the moment they were past his lips. If Uvarovite heard him he would direct the creature his way next. He had to think of something, fast. Where could he go next? Where....

Nitratine was never going to complain about training sessions with Tourmaline again. Not after the last seeming eternity he'd spent mostly running from Uvarovite's monster. He had seen the youma in action before but being on the receiving end of it's wrath was far different than seeing it inflicted upon Senshi and Knights. The youma was vicious and ruthless, just like it's master.

He was currently clutching the not-quite baseball bat they'd been given and hiding from the youma under a small rock ledge.

When he heard Cornetite's voice he winced knowing that meant that both the Captain and the Youma would know where his fellow Lieutenant was hiding. God, the idiot.

-------------------

The Captain had taken some time out of his day to work with Nitratine and Cornetite in one of the various training rings in the Castle grounds. The two Lieutenants were coming along nicely but neither he nor Tourmaline was likely to let them slack off even if they were not out dealing with the insects that called themselves Senshi.

Training sessions with the Pet had been his idea and while neither of the Lieutenants were likely to actually hurt his youma it was a good learning experience. They would at least learn how to survive no mater what was thrown at them.

If they could pay attention to their lessons...

Uvarovite had heard the lieutenants voice but, unfortunately for Cornetite, so had The Pet. Claws sent little flecks of crystal raining down on Cornetite as the Pet pulled itself up over the top of the crystalline formation, hissing as it looked down at the Lieutenant.

He had a decent amount of respect for the Negaverse Captain. While General Tourmaline was chaotic, Captain Uvarovite represented something closer to order. He kept mostly to his work in the laboratory in search of information and did not often seek to put them through tasks more menial than were expected of them as Lieutenants.

That did not change that he considered Uvarovite to be a ruthless b*****d on the battlefield. Captain Uvarovite had zero tolerance for nonsense and even if the youma was instructed to not harm either he or Nitratine in ways they wouldn't recover from it would hardly stop him from trying to scare the s**t out of either of them.

He felt the crystal shards dropping down, listening to almost chime-like sounds as the pieces clinked together. He cursed, bracing himself as he swung around to jab the staff up against the underside of the youma's head, aiming for the soft spot where it's skull-like armor met the flesh of it's body. "Gotcha!"

It was too quiet and the lieutenant didn't like that. He'd expected to hear either the youma or Cornetite yelling after his friend had called out to him but neither of those thing seemed to be happening. That meant something was up and that didn't help the prickling sensation on his skin.

"Damn it.." He muttered quietly to himself.

Nitratine peeked out from his hiding place and saw The Pet looming over something, distracted for a moment with what he had to assume was Cornetite. Ducking out of his hiding place he darted over, raising the bat only to bring it down on the creatures tail at almost the same time that Cornetite's staff impacted the Pet's head. He was pretty sure it wouldn't actually hurt the youma but maybe it would distract it enough that the two of them would be able to put some distance between themselves and it.

What wasn't expected was the Youma's tail to come up, colliding with Nitratine's side and sending the Lieutenant skidding across the ground toward Uvarovite's feet. <******** ..., wait ... s**t." Nitratine tried to scramble out of the way of the Captain but wasn't quick enough. He felt a boot on his back pressing him down onto the floor. He knew Uvarovite wouldn't hurt him too much but the Captain was a b*****d and one that liked to play with his prey.

-------------------

The Pet howled, the high pitched sound ringing in the training ground, as both Cornetite and Nitratine landed blows on it's softer body. It's tail lashed out in retaliation against the smaller Lieutenant and there was a small bit of satisfication in feeling Nitratine 's body as The Pet swatted the Lieutenant away from it. It's claws scrambled for a moment until they caught the staff Cornetite was holding, pressing it against the crystal and threatening to snap the wood in half if the officer didn't let go.

Still hissing it pulled it self up over the crystals intending to keep after Cornetite if the Lieutenant wasn't smart enough to get out of the way of it's body.

Uvarovite's smirk widened as the two Lieutenants managed to land almost coordinated blows on his youma. They at least were learning better to work together and Nitratine was becoming more bold. At first Nitratine had been hesitant to do anything that might cause an injury but the anger simmering in the younger man was finally starting to take hold. It was making the Lieutenant more bold and he did have to give his Lieutenant credit for that.

He still wasn't the best fighter and he watched as his Pet swatted Nitratine away with ease, it's main target still Cornetite. As Nitratine came to a stop near him he pressed a boot to the Lieutenant's back, holding him to the ground.

"That was impressive Nitratine .... but stupid."

"You're one ugly son of a b***h." He shouted out to the youma as the staff was smashed back against the rocks. He could feel the tension in the rod building and was tempted to let it break-- let the snake with arms turn it into a spear so he would have something capable of doing more harm.

That wasn't the purpose of the afternoon's training session. They'd been given blunted weapons to keep from drawing blood that didn't come from being bashed against something. They weren't supposed to wound or otherwise grievously harm one another. This was training.

This is war.

He could hear the words and ignored them, releasing the staff in favor of using the brief window he had to escape the beast. He took off at a run, working the shield free from his arm before skidding to a halt once he'd done so. Aiming as best he could, Cornetite chucked the shield at the youma as though it were as easy to throw as a frisbee might have been. Eat your heart out, Captain America.

Nitratine tried to wiggle out from under Uvarovite's foot but the Captain was just heavy enough that he wasn't quite able to do it. The boot was pressing between his shoulder blades, making it harder to actually get his arms under him.

"You could be a little less of a b*****d for .. ******** ... five minuets." Nitratine tried to get his knees under him as he squirmed. He managed a bit but it just left him in a rather compromising position and he still couldn't get his chest off the ground. The more he struggled the harder Uvarovite pressed on him.

He was about to try something else when he felt cold metal against his throat. Nitratine knew that Uvarovite wouldn't hurt him, at least not too much, but feeling the chain of the Captain's weapon wrap around his throat was enough to make him freeze.

-------------------

The Pet snarled at Cornetites words, dropping down to the ground with a solid thud. It's claws dug into the ground as it lunged at the Lieutenant, teeth snapping even though it had been told to not kill the officers. When Cornetite let go of the staff it crushed it under one foot so that neither of the Lieutenants would be able to use it against the Youma again.

As the shield went hurtling toward the Youma Uvarovite cleared his throat, "Cornetite!" He snapped, knowing his voice would carry over the training ground. He had pulled Nitratine's head up with the chain on his weapon, not enough to actually cut off the Lieutenants air, but enough to get his point across. "Chose your target wisely."

He smirked as Nitratine squirmed, wanting to see how Cornetite would react.

His head turned in the direction of Captain Uvarovite as his attention was drawn to the elder man. At some point he had lost track of Nitratine's movements, making the incorrect assumption that his companion and fellow Lieutenant had gotten away after his strike at the youma. That would be today's lesson, then. Don't assume. Don't act rashly. Always know the whereabouts of the rest of your team.

He remained still, eyes narrowed and lips pressed together in a firm line of irritation. Without the ability to teleport that the higher ranked officers had there was no outcome in which he could make it to Uvarovite before he did something to Nitratine. If this were a real fight and not a training simulation he would be seconds away from watching his friend's demise. The Captain could easily choke Nitratine, or even snap his neck with the right leverage and force.

Chose your target wisely.

He could feel the rage bubbling up inside of him as the youma loomed on one side of the arena, Uvarovite's threatening presence on the other. You can't win. He knew that. He did not need a mental reminder that this was useless; the entire thing futile.

"I yield." He called back just as clearly, loathing the words as they fell from his lips. They didn't have the weapons to fight against the Captain alone, let alone the Captain and his beast. They did not yet have the skill needed. It was a lesson in humility just as much as it was a lesson in team work. "Let him up, I yield."

Hearing Uvarovite's words didn't do anything to help NItratine's mood as he saw Cornetite finally look at them. He knew how Cornetite would react but even so he almost didn't want him to. Cornetite would hate having to yield no matter how impossible the circumstances were. It just wasn't part of his nature.

But ....

He knew Cornetite wouldn't let anything happen to him. One thing he knew whatever else happened, whatever mess they were in, Cornetite would make sure he was safe. So he was not surprised when he heard Cornetite give up but part of him burned with shame. If he hadn't gotten himself caught they wouldn't have had to yield.

He coughed as Uvarovite let go of the chain. He'd been able to breath but his body hadn't listened and he'd been holding his breath anyway

-------------------

When Cornetite gave in he let go of the chain, letting it unwind from around Nitratine's neck and took his foot off the Lieutenants back. The Pet slithered it's way back over to him, lurking around behind the Captain now that the game was over.

He leaned down and caught Nitratine under one arm, hauling the younger man up to his feet and making sure he was standing before letting him go. "I would suggest next time keeping an eye on where all your targets are."

Both of the Lieutenants had promise but both of them needed to learn to stop reacting to things without thinking.

"Understood." He nodded his head before closing the distance between himself and the other two men, stooping down to pick up the shield while leaving behind the remnants of the staff. Pet could use it as a chew toy or a tooth pick for all he cared. He was ready to shelf the rest of the weapons and return home to find that little bit of normalcy in life, if he was able to.

Without giving Uvarovite the satisfaction of watching him fuss over Nitratine he paused before the Captain. "Are we dismissed, sir, or were there any other lessons to impart for this session?"

Nitratine dusted himself off and reached up to rub his neck. There was most likely going to be a mark for a bit, depending on how long he stayed powered up. He wanted to say something but knew whatever he said wasn't going to come out nicely and he didn't really feel up to a talking to from the Captain.

He had been about to ask if they were free to go but Cornetite got to that before him.

-------------------

"No, the two of you are free to go. You did well despite your issues at the end." He disappeared his weapon before tossing an energy orb at The Pet as a treat. The sound of his youma's jaws snapping shut on the orb was still satisfying despite it not being on some senshi insect.
