Hobbies. Things to get her out of the house. Honestly, Bellatrix had been turning into somewhat of a hermit in the past year, and only went out when it was utterly necessary…and why would it honestly be utterly necessary to ever really leave the house?
Seemed a rather stupid thing to do, really.
But Millie had been telling her to go out for months now…and she supposed today was as good a day as any, and Bellatrix found herself at the art studio that she had used to frequent relatively often in years past. It hadn’t really changed much, but she felt a little shy upon entering, though that melted when she saw the most perfect thing to start working on.
Bless this place for having such beautiful pieces to finish and paint for those who didn’t have the talent or the drive to make their own pieces.
The bird was beautiful. Intricate and clearly well crafted…by the time Bellatrix had scooped it up and moved to her work station, she already had a pretty clear idea of how she wanted to paint it, and what she would do with it. Millie would like it, she was sure…and perhaps it would give her another good chance to have a heart to heart with her daughter.
With a smile on her face and in her heart, the woman began first treating the wood and began to paint, humming softly under hear breath as she put brush to carving, pleased that she had left her cave and rejoined the world for once. This was nice. Calming.
It would end up being even more beautiful.

Shikora loved going to the art studio. It was a place she could go where she could sit in peace, in relative quiet, and just carve. No one questioned what she was doing unless they wanted to talk about art, which she was always willing to do. There were refreshments, and quiet music, and fellow artistic people, and no paperwork (because she had definitely become a psychologist to do paperwork, obviously). She loved being able just to sit and work. Her latest piece was something she was particularly proud of -- it was an image she had gotten into her head, and after looking at some references, had dived into work on. It was a bird, of course, but birds were more complicated than they seemed, especially when it came to their feet or their plumage. She thought she had managed to capture the details as well as the wood would have allowed. As she trusted most people at this place knew to leave her things alone by now, she left the finished bird at her seat while she went off to get herself a small glass of wine. It couldn't hurt to take a few sips. She hadn't expected to come back to find that her carving was gone. Shikora made a quiet, alarmed squeak. Where had her bird gone? She had spent so much time working on that... Her eyes scanned the room, attempting to locate where it had wandered off to. Most people seemed to be working on canvasses today. There were a few people that were painting plates. Had someone just grabbed it and run off-- Oh. Shikora frowned slightly. She didn't recognize that woman. Did she think that was free to take? Well, this was awkward. Shyly, Shikora made her way over, trying to figure out what she was supposed to say to the woman who was painting her bird.

Bellatrix was still happily applying paint to the bird, putting as much details into the eyes as she could, when she felt someone looking at her. She tried to ignore the prickling but after a moment she glanced up and raised her eyebrows at the purple haired woman who seemed to be staring at her.
“Um…yes? Can I help you with something…?”
She felt more than a little flustered…having someone watching her paint wasn’t really the relaxing trip to the studio that she was hoping to have…but…perhaps the other woman just had a question? Or…wanted to see what she was doing maybe…?
…She really, really hoped that it wasn’t going to turn into her asking to watch. She wasn’t sure she could handle that.
Clearing her throat softly, Bellatrix glanced back at the bird carving in her hand and carefully set it on the table so as not to mess up the paint on the eyes. “I’m Bellatrix, it’s…nice to meet you…?”
Well damn. Now that sounded like a question but…it was kind of creepy to just have someone come and stare at you…

"Uhm," Shikora cleared her throat, awkwardly. What was she supposed to say? That's my bird, give it back? It's pretty but that's mine? Hey, the carvings aren't free? Shikora cringed internally. Too harsh. Definitely not anything she would say. She would feel bad the instant it came out of her mouth. And it was actually pretty. As she looked at it, she could tell the woman had a good eye. She was doing a good job with painting it, even if that wasn't exactly what she had in mind... Oh, she was making the poor woman feel awkward... Shikora pulled her hands behind herself and fidgeted. What was she supposed to do? She didn't want to be rude, but in a lot of ways, Bellatrix had been unintentionally rude by stealing her bird. Well. Unintentionally borrowing. Maybe. Would she even give it back? "Shikora," murmured she, pointing to the bird. "You're doing a good job painting that." She was, but... "Ah, that was my carving..." She flushed. "I'm sorry!"

What an interesting name…Bellatrix managed a smile, though it fell rather quickly when she looked down at the bird in her hands and blinked. “It…what?”
Oh…well. Whoops. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry!” She quickly held the bird out, looking utterly stricken. “I didn’t realize…it’s been a while since I’ve come here, and I knew that there used to be things, ceramics and wooden carvings that you could purchase to paint and I had just assumed…I suppose though I should have realized when it was so well done that it wasn’t just a…but…”
Wow. This was why she never wanted to do anything anymore. Because all she managed to do was mess things up. “The paint isn’t all dry yet, I’m sure it can be washed off still if you hurry, the primer though, that’s already been set…”
There was a terrible churning in her stomach and Bellatrix couldn’t even begin to think of how to make this up to Shikora. There seemed to be a wall around her useful thoughts though. “I…I am so sorry…”

Bellatrix seemed just as flustered as she was, if not moreso. Shikora, who tended to be more concerned for others instead of herself, instantly felt bad. Bellatrix looked sad. Upset. Should she have even said anything? Maybe she should have just let it go. At least Bellatrix seemed to be enjoying painting it. Oh gosh... She shouldn't have opted to leave her carving there. She could see why someone who hadn't been there in a while could have confused it for something that was just available to paint, though she couldn't help flushing a bit at the unintentional compliment about it being so well done. "Ah, I'm glad you liked it, at least," offered Shikora, a small, awkward smile on her face. This was such a strange situation. She wished she had known better. It wasn't the first time someone had just snatched up something she had been working on, she supposed. At least Bellatrix realized it for what it was, unlike how some other people seemed to approach her in-progress pieces. Shikora took the piece back, looking over what Bellatrix had done with it. Even in the short time that Shikora had walked away from her piece, the other artist had already did quite a bit with it. And it wasn't bad, either. She could tell that some of the people here were not particularly skilled. Which was fine! One did not have to be skilled to enjoy doing art, and the only way to get good at art was to keep doing it, over and over, until one developed their own eye and developed their own style. It seemed like Bellatrix already had her own eye, though. It may not have been the way Shikora planned on approaching it, but it was still pretty. "I shouldn't have left it just... sitting there," murmured Shikora. Perhaps she had deserved this for making too many assumptions about the crowd of people that came there. It sounded like Bellatrix was a former regular herself. Shikora didn't know everyone who attended. "So it's my bad, too. I'm sorry." She smiled, even if it didn't seem to be very wide. "And it's pretty. I like what you've done with it, so far."

With a sad sort of smile, Bellatrix finally looked away, beginning to gather up the paint and supplies she had been using. “It’s really not your fault! I am honestly so sorry, I just assumed. But…you’re very talented, and it was an honor just to be able to work on your carving for even the short time that I managed to.”
Gathering up the brushes in her hand, Bellatrix looked back up at the woman and offered up a much more expressive smile. “I’ve never had much of a talent for making things, so I do hope you’ll forgive me.”
Standing, she moved to the other end of the table, placing the brushes back into the container that stood, ready to hold them. “I didn’t realize that people in the city even had such talents anymore…I mean.” She gestured to the bird again and laughed somewhat nervously. “Wow that came out wrong…it’s just. I don’t know, I think of wood carving and the only thing that comes to mind is like…Little House on the Prairie, you know? Old time people who just sit in a rocking chair and whittle…it’s so cool that you’ve gotten into it…perhaps one day you could give me some tips and I could eventually make something…” Bellatrix let her eyes linger on the bird again and shook her head. “Maybe not as detailed as this, but if I could make something a quarter as nice as this is, I would consider myself to be quite talented.”
There…that would fix things…they would continue to exchange pleasantries and then Bellatrix would be able to just go home and forget that this day ever happened.

Bellatrix seemed sad, and even though it could be argued that Bellatrix had been the one who stolen Shikora's carving--why should Shikora even feel bad?--she felt bad anyway. There had to be some way she could help in this situation, but how? She glanced down at the bird again, before glancing back up at Bellatrix. "It's okay," she replied, shaking her head when Bellatrix once again asked for forgiveness. That seemed silly. She had apologized enough. It was an honest mistake. Shikora shouldn't have assumed that no one would have grabbed her carving, especially because the assumption was a bad one. It wasn't like there weren't other carved items to paint, here... Bellatrix wanted to learn? Shikora raised her brows in surprise. She wasn't the best teacher, she didn't think, but if Bellatrix was legitimately interested, Shikora might be able to show her some things. "Oh, thank you." She blushed, rubbing her neck with her free hand. "It's something that I picked up on when I was younger. I'd pick up sticks and grab a knife and just shave the stick, I guess." It sounded so silly when she described it aloud. "Eventually I started making shapes? I know, it's kinda a weird hobby, but it helps me relax." Bellatrix was gathering her things like she was just going to leave. That wasn't right... She looked back down at the bird, and back up to Bellatrix. Hm. "Would you want to," she awkwardly offered the bird back towards Bellatrix, "finish it, maybe?"

“I remember carving soap once when I was young…I think it was first grade or something…so you know, a hundred years ago.” Bellatrix laughed lightly. “It worked out pretty well, I think I was trying to make a bear…and it looked like a passable…bar of soap.” Grinning slightly, and looking back at the other woman, swallowing after a moment, she continued. My daughter did the same thing a few times, only instead of letting her use anything sharp, they gave her popsicle sticks. So, her bar of soap carving looked…like a very small bar of soap. It smelled good though.”
Slowly she reached for the bird, seeming rather hopeful. “Are…are you sure? I don’t want to overstep…but…I would like to keep…I don’t know. It’s just so beautiful already…I just wanted to help add to it.”
Looking down at the carving that once again rested in her palm, Bellatrix laughed. “Just think, when you’ve taught me how to do carvings, you can paint them. Though, I’m sure…I’m sure I’ll be able to carve the best tombstones ever. Tombstones and bars of soap.”
Reaching for the discarded brushes, the woman looked back at Shikora once again. “What color should I make him…I had something in mind, but it’s your creation…what did you have in mind for it? Him? Her?”
She held the bird gently in her hand before putting it back on the table. “Tell me what you were thinking, please.”
She did know that she was supposed to have said no. Things would have been more proper if she would have waved away the suggestion and just packed up her things and left but...
But she was so lonely and this seemed...like a good way to make a friend. Maybe. Either that or she would end up annoying the poor woman enough that she never came back to the studio...that...
Well that wasn't what she wanted at all, and for a moment she began to second guess her decision again. "...But, I don't have to. I really, I can go if you want me too, I'm being so pushy!"

She smiled. "Oh, I've heard of projects like that! They can be very cute." They usually just ended up looking like oddly shaped bars of soap in the end, or just smaller versions of themselves like Bellatrix's daughter's bar of soap, but it was still pretty cute. Honestly, she wasn't sure if she wanted to make this move, but she could always make a new bird, right? And Bellatrix seemed so excited about being able to paint it. She was already going ahead and moving back towards grabbing the brushes. In some ways, it was nice to see that someone was so excited about working with something that she had made, and in a lot of ways, that was enough. This was the right move. The woman in front of her was no longer sad, and her bird was becoming something that she would not have even imagined. She chuckled, raising a hand when Bellatrix asked for her opinion. "I was probably going to make it a red-crested bird, but I'm really curious about what you were thinking! You already started it and had something in mind, and I'm wondering what that is." Shikora sat down in front of Bellatrix, but tried to avoid staring at her, because that was awkward. Instead, she kept her eyes on the bird for the moment. "Don't leave. There's no point in that." Her eyes flicked up, and she smiled. "This is a place to express creativity, and you were doing that, right?"

Bellatrix dipped her brush in the paint once more and began working on the eye that she had left unfinished. “I had been thinking of a blue jay, actually. I thought that something this detailed deserved a detailed pattern on it, and I don’t know. That’s what I saw when I looked at it, though I suppose if you’d like I could make it a cardinal, they do look quite similar sometimes!”
There was excitement in her voice again and her raspberry eyes met those of Shikora. “I don’t know. There’s just something about blue jays that make me think of summertime. Cardinals make me think of the snow and winter and…honestly…after the winter we just went through…”
She laughed, shaking her head and grimacing a little at the memory of all the snow. “I wouldn’t mind not seeing a cardinal for at least a couple of years, to be honest, but, if that was what you saw, that is what I’ll do.”
Bellatrix nodded, grinning slightly. Shikora was right. This was a place of creativity. It was a place to express yourself and…she was doing her best at it. She was talking to someone, making conversation and actually enjoying herself for once.
“So, I’m going to be honest, I’m still sorry I took your carving…but I’m glad it gave me a chance to talk to you. I don’t really have many friends my own age anymore so…it’s nice to meet one. If you decide you’d want to be friends with an art thief, that is.” She winked, though kind of regretted the joke the moment it was out of her mouth.

Bellatrix sounded so excited, and it was enough to bring a smile to Shikora's face, even if she originally was stuck somewhere between distress and anger. And sadness, honestly, but mostly distress... Still, Bellatrix seemed so excited to work on something Shikora made. It was nice to see someone appreciate handmade work (so many people didn't realize the number of hours that went into something even so simple as a bird!) and doubly nice to have ideas for it on top of that. When she took a moment to think about the winter they had just had, she shuddered. She had to admit, one of the nice things about the West Coast that didn't seem to be so common on the East Coast was, well, less cold. It wasn't that it didn't get cold, but California was not necessarily known for being chilly... "If you see a bluebird, then make a bluebird! I would like to see your vision." And she was serious about that, too. If Bellatrix had been inspired by Shikora's piece, she was curious to see what the inspiration was. When Bellatrix mentioned her lack of friends, though, she couldn't help a small frown on her face. That was, unfortunately, too familiar to her. "I don't really have a lot of friends either," murmured Shikora, glancing to the side. Her siblings often admonished her for that. She had been living there for years, how did she not have any friends? Part of it was, of course, that she wasn't sure who she could trust, the visions of her ... seed withdrawal still fresh in her head. The other part was that she dedicated so much of her time to helping all the broken people in Destiny City. "I moved here a few years ago and mostly just interact with my clients..." She giggled. "Hard to have spare time as a psychologist!"

Grinning, the woman nodded, settling back in to paint the piece the way she saw fit. “Then…we’ll be friends. If you’d like. What else do you do for fun, because it seems that we already have art in common…even if we just…if I can force myself to come here at least once a week, that qualifies as hanging out with a friend, right?” Bellatrix glanced up at the woman sheepishly. “I have become a hermit in the past few months…years, really. I thought had had almost broken out of the lifestyle and you know. Things happened and it sent me right back into hermit mode but…”
She drew in a breath and then grinned. “But if you only interact with your clients…then it really sounds like this would be good for the both of us. I promise I won’t steal any more of your carvings, honest. I mean…unless you like the way I paint them so much that you begin to give them to me and they turn into great collaborations and we both become famous in the art world and rich as thieves, and take over the city and laugh at our past misfortunes…”
Bellatrix paused for a moment and finally laughed. “…But that seems highly unlikely.”

Shikora smiled. "I suppose if we're both in the same place at least once a week, that would qualify as a scheduled hangout, yes. I think that's a thing that friendly people do." She was somewhat teasing, that was obvious by the quirk of a smirk on the edge of her lips -- but she was at least somewhat interested in the idea of actually talking to someone. Maybe her siblings back at home would stop shaming her for her life choices. Just because she didn't go to a bar every weekend and preferred keeping to herself away from people who could put hands in her chest-- She tapped her chin thoughtfully. "I mean, I could make a couple extra pieces, if you'd like? It may be interesting to steadily work with someone else! I haven't done that in a long time." Seeing as she had a lack of friends and, honestly, a lack of creative partners, she hadn't actually teamed up with anyone on a creative project since she lived back in Cali. It might have been worth seeing if they could have a decent working relationship. Maybe something good could come out of this accidental thievery. Bellatrix already seemed happier, honestly. Perhaps that was the good, but perhaps they could make a great? That sounded so silly-- "I also enjoy long walks on the beach, but Destiny City is unfortunately inland," remarked Shikora, swatting vaguely at the air. She crossed one leg over the other and leaned forward, placing her chin in her hands. "But I do like tennis! I'm pretty good at that, I think. Or mediocre, but it's fun anyway. Keeps me active." She laughed.

Bellatrix was feeling really…really happy for the first time in a long time, and she nodded, grinning. “Long walks on the beach, hm? I yeah. Maybe not in the sun, because I burn faster than a marshmallow on an open flame, but I’ll admit that not having a beach within easy reach is one of the many faults that this city has.”
That and the constant war that was raging all the time. But…that wasn’t something you talked about right off the bat.
“I’ve never tried tennis. I’d be more than willing to, though. If you ever wanted to teach me. I can’t see myself being any good, my hand to eye coordination is less than zero so, balls flying at my head normally results in the balls getting nice and comfy cozy with my face.”
She turned the bird in her hand and began working on the other eye, going quiet after a moment. “Do you think you’d want to go and get coffee or something after this? I wouldn’t mind prolonging being out with someone who seems to be roughly my own age. Normally it’s just me and my seventeen year old daughter, so you know…some company that doesn’t keep rolling their eyes at me would be…refreshing.”
Bellatrix’s own eyes were focused on the bird, but she was almost holding her breath, hoping for a favorable answer.
