Svartaf sat angrily under the shelter of an oak tree, watching a cold light rain speckle the dirt path he was just on. It had been raining on and off all day, so he parked himself under the tree to wait for the next break. In the tree’s shadow he ruminated over how his journey had been since leaving the beach. Which he didn’t want to do in the first place, of course. On the beach everything was better, even rain was warm and friendly. Out here in the forest, though? The damp cold made him sniffle. Not real spiffy. Going back was more tempting all the time.
It wasn’t the first time the idea of turning all nine tails and heading beachward had crossed his mind. He had left the forest valley of his birthplace as a foal because of disaster. He couldn’t honestly remember much of it. Where ever he came from, it was never home. Journeying back wasn’t his idea in he first place, but his tribe had encouraged him to find his origins.
You’ll learn so much, they said. It’ll be enlightening, they said.
Yeah right.
He doubted anyone would be there. He snorted sarcastically as he imagined finding that valley still completely flooded to this day. Thinking of it that way seemed even more pointless. He would have come all that way for a damn lake. Any relation he had should have moved on like he did if they escaped the flood.
“Stupid rain,” he shouted angrily, blaming the rain for his crappy mood and slow pace. The sooner it stopped, the sooner he could put this trip to an end.
