Well, there is a risk i won't ever play ... but i want some advice anyway.
I like soup, not so i can take silly combinations of characters, but so i can combine two or three themes in each army, either for mixing, or for contrasting, or to make a different theme.
* I like Power Armor for it being easy to kitbash. * I like Imperial Guard for being Military, but also for "filling out" infantry, although i confess that some vehicles would be nice too. * I Like Sisters of Battle(for their style), but i might have to wait with those until next year, of course. cat_3nodding * I like Callidus Assassins, and Death Cult assassins. * I like Inquisitors and Inquisitorial retinues, mainly Ordo Malleus as they can take Power Armor. * I like AdMech too.
* I also like Psykers.
* I like Genestealer Hybrids and -Cults.
* I like Chaos Cultists, and -Daemons, but only Khorne, Slaanesh and Tzeentch. (Nurgle is too gross.)
* I like Gangers. (Yes, i have the recent Necromunda.)
Yes, this is a lot, and a mess, so i'd like advice on how many armies to divide it into, and what to have in each.
Anyone dare helping?

Have you read the FAQ? It may have some influence on your choices.

Lady Blodwynn Have you read the FAQ? It may have some influence on your choices. Not really, not yet, i mean, i have not even decided on forces yet beyond what i'd like to put together and field, as i'm more into it for the fun of it than for serious contesting play. I haven't even gotten the rulebook for this edition yet ... (Was gonna buy Forgebane, but the only shop i have reliable access to that had it, sold out on all its copies.) So, i'm not sure if the errata would change any choices for me anyway, as i currently don't care about the so-called "meta". I care about delightful miniatures and themes.

Then I'm not sure what we can do to help you? If you are not going to play the game, why bother and just do what you want?

Lady Blodwynn Then I'm not sure what we can do to help you? If you are not going to play the game, why bother and just do what you want? Because i want to have something ready if i ever DO get an opportunity to play, i guess? I'm also not sure how some of the new things work, have they gotten rid of points or what has happened? Sorry, i probably seem more stupid than i actually am, but that happens to me occasionally, requiring that i get things explained more thoroughly than normally would be required.

I will give a more in depth reply when I have had some time to prepare, for now here are the core rules for 8th edition, which will explain the core mechanics of the game, as well as datasheets and the all important system for building an army. In short, if you want to build a legal army, you will have to adhere to that system. For example, models with the keyword can all go together into the same army without too much trouble. If you want to build just a soup army made up of a lot of models from the same faction (for example, Imperium or Chaos), you can just do that without too much hassle. If you want to get the most out of a codex though, that's where you can't just throw various factions together into the same detachment and simply roll with it. If you want to gain the benefits of for example, the Mordian Ironguard, you will have to field a detachment made up of nothing but models with the keyword. You can run multiple detachments at the same time, so it is possible, point limits permitting, to field Space Marines alongside Astra Militarum and the Adeptus Mechanicus.

I like the looks of Imperial Fists, Black Templars and Blood Angels more. Oh, and the Grey Knights, but i count them among "Imperial Agents" rather than as Space Marines. Hm, i bought the rulebook the other day, and found something interesting with the Eldar, namely the "Ynnari", a kind of "soup-army", that mixes craftworld and dark eldar, if i understand correctly, with at least one character that mixes the crudeness of the dark and the fancy of the craftworlds. Looks interesting.

Ok, what is the difference between the indexes and the codices? The Index books were released on day 1 alongside the rulebook to tide people over until GW could get around to releasing codice. The lists they contain are not as extensive as those found in the codice, but they can be used to play the game. You could be cheap and get the Index books, but you will miss out on Warlord traits, army specific special rules, stratagems and relics. I've had to ask around for what is included in miniature kits these days (still in the planning stage myself! sweatdrop ) and a kit does not contain the full rules, just the basic stat-line and weapon options, but no keywords or special rules. You will still need an Index or codex book to get the most out of your kits.
