She had come bearing another book, tonight, as was her wont every third week or so, when Caedus would usually have devoured the last that she had brought and be ready for more. Not literally, on the devouring- she kept him fed well enough, she hoped, that he wasn't feeling the need to burn or eat books for nourishment and warmth. Mental stimulation, however, was a little less frequently provided, but the man (alien) had to have some time for things other than reading, and her inane babble. Like other people's babble, or looking for ways to go home. Still, she returned week after week to ease her own concern over her friend, bringing him what comforts she could offer- and that he would accept. 'Forgetting' those he was less inclined to.

Today was no exception with her goodie bag, slung over her shoulder, the leather-bound book of poetry tucked into an outside pocket, protected by an oilcloth wrapping. The book was old enough to need the extra protection. Paul Laurence Dunbar. A poet she had read little of, but she'd been fond of some of his work when she was younger- Sympathy, especially, had been... I know why the caged bird beats his wing / Till its blood is red on the cruel bars; For he must fly back to his perch and cling / When he fain would be on the bough a-swing. In childhood, she'd been that caged bird. Her teachers hadn't harped on his work the way they did others- his work was a conversation in colloquialisms as much as 'proper' english, not just of the time and region, but of race. Some of it was feelings she couldn't understand, from almost a century and a half before; but mostly...

Well.

The clearing that she entered was already filled with Caedus' large presence, and she bounced in to join him, bag swinging off her shoulder and plopping into the grass in front of him, before her own frame found a spot not in the cold, damp dirt. Her tattoos glowed softly in the darkness, though the glow of her homeworld's symbol didn't obstruct her vision. Magic. The answer to everything she didn't understand, these days. "Good evening, Glynd. I come," she chirped at him cheerfully, "bearing miscellany, books, and potatoes. I found this food truck earlier this week that just makes the most amazing loaded potatoes and french fries? So unhealthy, but so delicious."

Of course, they'd eyed her judgmentally for ordering as much as she had, but she'd blamed it on children, not the 7-foot blue man who lived in the woods.

Here's a cheesy start for that RP I'd been babbling about wanting for months now. Let the frandos live their night in peace.

Caedus seemed relaxed and prepared for her appearance; he was reclining and seemed strangely tired but he managed a smile when she greeted him. “You spoil me,” he mused, but there was no criticism or disdain in his voice. He was always grateful for her company and her gifts, but to ensure she knew this he added, “Thank you.”

He didn’t tense when she neared; long ago he’d learned that she brought with her no need for hostility or alarm.

She was his friend, and one of the few that he could be at peace around.

With no hidden agenda to concern himself with, he simply glanced over the things she’d brought today before his eyes found her face. He never reached to take anything before it was offered to him, and despite his interest, he remained sitting still. “You seem like you are always in a good mood these days. I assume you have been doing well since we last spoke?”

The fact he had grown accustomed to her presence was something Jada had to almost actively work not to take for granted. A touch-y, feel-y person by nature, the relaxed pose that the alien kept around her had been hard-won, and she had negative interest in going back to how it had been when he had first escaped his prison. Of course, she wasn't sure how he interacted with others- maybe it had been her own bubbly personality that had kept him clenched up in his cloak for so long. Maybe not.

"You're fun to spoil." Jada informed her companion with a grin, first choosing to settle five containers between them. The lids were clear, but tightly on, and she pulled them off one at a time. "This is some loaded seafood hot pot french fries. Chicken Bacon Ranch. Regular poutine- it is gravy, and cheese curds and stuff. This is a philly cheese steak fry, and this is curry chicken." A manicured finger pointed to each one, and she set a fork in one of the lids, passing it over to him. "I never know what you'll be in the mood for, and it's a really good food truck. So." palms facing up, arms spread. "Bon Appétit."

One day she'd bring him something that would garner a reaction. Maybe next time she'd bring Crème brûlée. Everyone loved that- right?

"This week went alright." she stretched out her legs, reaching over and peering at the other items she had brought him, wondering which to give him first after he'd eaten. "I've had a lot to be cheerful about, lately. Good friends, good health, and my family is all in one piece and in their rightful place. And safe." she hummed, considering. "My homeworld seems to be more lively than ever. Since these-" and she waved her arms- "it has been finding more inventive locations to introduce me to, with its random location generator." At least she wasn't consistently being dropped in the ocean, which was a plus.

She grinned, already knowing he'd probably reject her offer. "You should come see it one day. I think you'd get a kick out of it."

As she pulled out a blue box from her bag, leaving the book instde, she peered at her friend with interest. "And what about your week? How are you holding up, Caedus?"

Caedus seemed a little distracted, but the smile lingered in the shadows. He nodded somewhat absentmindedly as Scylla listed the food; he would not remember any of their names unless they were either very good or very bad. He was not picky with food and, despite his perpetual hunger, he did not immediately dig in.

He waited, pensive, eyes on her for a few seconds before they moved to her book and then, to the sky.

“Uneventful,” he answered. “I am holding up well enough. My nerves are acting up a bit,” he mused, hand moving to rest over his stomach in an oddly vulnerable fashion that seemed very unlike him.

He had something on his mind; he seemed distracted and, while not quite distant, there was something off about him.

He did not unveil it with careful words and implications; he announced abruptly “I have enough energy, almost. I will be leaving soon.”

Only, the second the words fell from his lips, he turned his gaze back to her. As if concerned those words were too harsh, he immediately added in a softer tone, “But I will return. And I will take you up on that offer when I do.”

The food seemed to be of little interest beyond his initial cursory inspection, and she supposed that was common enough. She'd tried to introduce him to a variety of foods, to make his time here more pleasant- or at least more palatable. Sometimes he seemed to find more joy in food for the soul than nourishment for the body- which was what the book was for. She couldn't blame him, though, when there were still so many things she didn't know about him. His world, his people, what his goal would be when he finally left Earth. She'd been too gentle with her prying, not giving voice to the multitude of things she wanted to know.

His hand curled over his stomach and her own clenched where it lay on her bare leg. I will be leaving soon.

The words weren't said harshly, but rushed, and she allowed herself a moment. A thousand years, and Odysseus would again see the shores of Ithaca. She'd made the reference before, but it seemed more apt now that the time was drawing near. Did Caedus have a Penelope waiting his return? He'd told her he was an only child, once before. My father was very valiant though. And my mother very clever. There were many stories of them. Scylla unclenched her hands, forcing her lips into a small smile that didn't match the sadness in her eyes.

She would miss him. Her strange, alien friend, who was content to listen to her speak, and offered his cloak when she was cold. Who provided a placid constancy in a life that seemed otherwise frenetic and always-whirling. "I'll have that to look forward to, then." it was small solace in the absence that would loom over her. She swallowed roughly, clearing her throat. "Do you know about how much longer it will be? Before..." her hands clenched again, against her will, nails curling into her blue skirts.

If he was leaving, she needed to make sure he had something to remember her by. She'd given him one of the gems from her homeworld, but- that was a token. That wasn't something to bring back a memory. Time for someone as long-lived as he would pass differently. And she couldn't stand the thought of being forgotten.

“Perhaps a week or two,” Caedus mused. “There are those that would have me leave sooner, but I nearly have enough energy to get home, now. I mean to leave as soon as I can. It is not that I dislike Earth.”

His eyes found hers. “I find that there are people I will very much miss. There is much to this world that I have not seen, and a part of me regrets it. But there is a greater part, a louder part, that drives me to finish what I have started. I cannot forgive Beryl and I cannot forgive the Negaverse. In all the time I have been here I have seen only their continued efforts to destroy this world. If it is truly one of the last bastions of life in this galaxy, in this universe, I cannot in good conscience do nothing. So I will be back. I will recover on my homeworld, I will retrieve my allies, and we will return. I will pay back the debt I owe the Senshi of this world. And, perhaps, when the war is over…”

He sighed softly. “…We can rebuild relations between my world and yours. I understand that the times have changed. Most people on your world do not know of the war you fight. Of you, and your powers. But we are allies. And we should look after each other. We are two small worlds of life in a universe of desolation. I hope we can help each other flourish. Of course,” he offered a small smile. “That will mean many trips back and forth. You could visit us. And of course, I would have to visit often. If you would have me, that is.”

A week or two. One more visit, at the most, to figure out how she wanted to say goodbye to a friend. She supposed it was a boon, at least, that she had this much warning- the thought of hauling herself here one day to find him missing without warning? She would definitely have assumed the worst, and... well. Would have made no friends in the Negaverse in an attempt to find him, all to no avail. And she'd few to none to start with.

"There are people who will very much miss you, glynd," she replied, and reached out with one hand to touch him- a hand, a shoulder, even the edge of his cloak- adding, "and I'll look forward to your return. It will be good to have more allies. It's been feeling pretty lonely." I will recover on my homeworld, he said, and for a moment she wondered if he could take her with him. Another world, a hopefully living world- what a fantastic adventure!

But she didn't open her mouth to ask, letting the brief fancy slip away as quickly as it had come on.

"They might not know the war we're fighting, but you can bet that all the alien-seekers would feel mighty vindicated to have another civilization working alongside us." Jada tried to keep her smile light, eyes focusing on his own- that small bit of light quirking his lips. And how he'd read her mind, suggesting she could visit. "I can't speak for the rest of the Earth, but you're always welcome where I am, Caedus. And I'd certainly love to be able to pay you a visit." she leaned in, pushing a pile of fries towards him. "And not just for alliances."

She swallowed, and her head dropped, and she glanced away, tugging on her lower lip with her teeth. "I know- you're sure they are alive. Uncorrupted. But are you sure they'll be willing to follow you, to come here and fight? It's been a thousand years. Things fade." A thousand years. How long would it be before he returned? Would it even be in her lifetime? Would there be a Scylla left to be his... ally?

It was only when Scylla pushed the fries at him that he began to eat, but it wasn’t with the usual appreciation of food; he was more interested in her, in talking. For all the time he had spent in the Rift, trapped on this planet, this past year had been both good and bad for him. He was trapped, still, but not alone.

What had been an attempt to survive had unexpected side effects—friendships born of generosity and companionship.

Scylla was undeniably amongst his most dear, and would be one of the few he’d miss most. She had tirelessly visited, routinely; she had brought sustenance, supplies, information and companionship.

Sometimes, when she was around, he didn’t feel so trapped.

But there was no avoiding duties and responsibilities, and he could have made friends with all the people of Destiny City and it wouldn’t have been enough to deter him from his task.

“My people are loyal,” he said quietly. “There were many good men who were lost that day. I have no reason to believe the goals of my people, even after all this time, would not be the same as mine. Metallia’s existence is a threat to Earth, and to all the worlds. If she grows in power, if she extends her reach, it is not far-fetched to believe that she could come for us. For any allies we still have. At the very least, I know they can consider that. But,” his eyes slid to the stars even as he lifted a few fries to his lips. “Even if I had to return with only a handful of allies—even if I had to return alone—I still would.”

He glanced back at her, soft smile on his face. “I have grown fond of this world. In a way. Or, perhaps, it is just some of the people on it. And I will help stop the war Beryl started, in any way I could. She may be dead, but Metallia still lives. I will see her defeated.”

He spoke with such confidence, such resolve; it seemed he had made up his mind and would not be swayed on the matter.

There he went-- Scylla's smile was soft as she watched her hulking friend lean over the fries, finally beginning to eat. And it gave her a twinge- their chats had been... she knew so little about him. How many nights had she come here, bringing him her favorite foods, her least favorites, a spectrum in-between, yet after more than a year of these meetings she still had no idea of his preferences, or his favorites. She didn't know that he'd ever tried on the Earth clothes she brought him, or if he'd given it away, or what. Yet they'd spoken of poetry, and 2000 years of loose history, and he'd comforted her when she was hurt, and... maybe knowing someone's favorite food, when they didn't seem to appreciate food the way you did, wasn't the mark of friendliness she'd always tried to apply to it. In relation to him, anyways.

My people are loyal, Caedus told her, and his voice was quiet, but confident enough that she nodded. It was meant to be reassurance, but it only loosened the knot in her chest and stomach by a hair. But it was a hair quickly swallowed up by the variety of emotion swirling- loneliness, lurking on the edges of it. Jealousy? Longing? No, those emotions weren't what it was, but maybe a small ingredient in the complex feelings. She would MISS him, and if something did go wrong, she couldn't help him from here, and... that wasn't her job. She had to remind herself of that.

As her companion shifted his head, a small smile curving his mouth, her own smile widened in response and she shifted her weight, sliding closer to her friend. The fries were in the middle, of course, and she was reminded by the crinkle of plastic as her leg bumped them- with a huff, she shifted them, and then herself, so she could plop down more comfortably close to him. "This world has hopefully grown fond of you as well," Scylla told him cheerfully, but her eyes were soft and sadder than she intended when she added, "I know some of the people have." Jada certainly had. Caedus had become more than just a friend- these visits had become almost therapeutic in their regularity, in the calm breath they offered in the midst of the chaos of her senshi and civilian lives. Not unlike her visits to her homeworld, she supposed. Scylla had gotten spoiled, thinking even with the energy she brought him weekly, he would always be here longer.

She leaned forward, grabbing at one of the fries in front of them and popping it in her mouth, chewing thoughtfully. "Well, if this winds up being our last time together, I'm glad I came bearing more than just potatoes. These have started getting soggy." They weren't awful, yet, but they would be if they didn't eat them quickly. She should have planned better for the walk.Or brought something nicer- what foolishness, that their potentially last night hanging out would be accompanies by food from a truck.

There were so many things she'd wanted to know. The names of his valiant father, or his clever mother. He'd had no siblings, he'd been a troublemaker. Who had been his best friend growing up? What games had they played? Questions she'd wasted... but he had promised to return. She'd ask him then. For now, she knew what her next question would be. "Will you give me a few more words? I know how to accidentally insult people," her eyes flickered to him in the dark, twinkling at last with some mirth, "and how to welcome them, when they come back with you." she shifted again, taking herself closer to his side, not even trying to be sneaky about it. "How do I say thank you?"

The Space Cauldron
PostPosted: Mon Oct 22, 2018 9:23 am

Caedus never seemed to mind the closeness he felt with her, and when she rested closer to him he just seemed to relax.

"Scylla," he said after a moment. "I wish I had time to teach you all the words. My whole language. I will miss these conversations." He held a fry carefully between his fingers, though he did not raise it to his lips. He remained a stoic figure; he did not move closer to her, but neither did he move away. He was statuesque in his resolve, and though he offered no words, he seemed to welcome her nearness.

"...But I will return," he said, both for her and for himself. He held that resolve as true as he held the idea that his people were fine and waiting for him. He clung to these convictions, and there was no doubt that he would hold true to them.

If he could return, he would.

He was quiet for a moment, and then began his explanation, "There are several ways to say thank you. The most basic, and simple, is 'Vyn'. You would say it to someone doing a small deed or saying a kind word. It means 'to give thanks'. A greater form, 'Vynlen'. You would say this to someone who has done you a greater deed, or whose actions you appreciate immensely. The greatest form of thanks is 'Vynlendl'. You say this when your gratitude is so vast you are soul bound. You do not need to include the subject, it is conjugated into the word. If you wish to be formal, you title your subject. It is not like to welcome--Dvelin, Glein. You could say Vyn, Geln, but it is universally understood without subject identifiers. Does that make sense?"

He spoke with the same enthusiasm as before, though it was somewhat tempered by the idea of having to say goodbye at all.

She could still remember how jittery he had been when he first came to Earth, fresh from the torment of a thousand years in hell. His ability to relax around her, even though she tried to remember to approach him slowly, was a gift that she didn't take for granted. "I will miss them too." her voice was small, almost choked, before she cleared her throat, pushing a smile onto her mouth, trying to clear the sorrow from her eyes. "When you come back you can teach me more." he held the fry, and himself, still as the crystals he so seemed to enjoy. He would come back. He had promised. And she wanted to believe him. It was just a matter of when- when would he be strong enough to return? Would she still be Scylla? Would he be back, with his allies, in time to help them fight? She didn't know. He wouldn't know either. So, instead, she took the words he taught her, adding them carefully to her mental dictionary of 'alien' language.

Vyn, Vynlen, Vynlendl. she repeated the words cautiously, tasting them on her tongue.

And which, she wondered, should she use to thank Caedus for his friendship, over these last years? He had been- no pun intended- a rock for her, unwitting or not. It was easy to remember who she had been, her scattered, uncertain heart. He had been steady. He had needed her, helped her in return. Loaned her his cloak when she bled, shown concern for her, when she had no one else in her life that she could turn to, in good conscience. His stoic, accidental kindness had probably saved her life, if not her soul, and- she reached out to him, rising to her knees, and aimed a kiss for his forehead.

"Vynlendl, Caedus. You have been my friend, and my ally. You saved me, and I don't know how I can ever repay that."

Caedus' eyes lifted to hers, and for a moment he wore the same, typical, bland expression that should be expected of him.

And then, softly, he smiled, with a warmth that reached his eyes.

"I do not know that I saved anyone. And you certainly owe me nothing. I feel that I was saved by you." He maintained his smile, "I am grateful to have met you. You are wise. And kind. And strong. And there have been times that I felt week, and I think of our friendship, and it brings me strength. If there are words to thank you enough, I do not know them. Not in your language. But do not be sad in our parting."

He leaned a little closer, rested his hand over hers. He was cold, but this was a connection he thought warranted the physical contact he had learned those on Earth seemed to favor.

"I will return. Better, and stronger. And I hope that when I do we are able to complete our goal. We must stop the Negaverse. Before they stretch any further," he sighed. "But I have hope. As long as Earth has people like you to defend it. I admire you. I will take your teachings with me back to my people. And I will bring them here for you to meet. You will inspire them as well."

He seemed convinced, determined.

It was a promise--to her, and himself.
