[quote="Orpheus Solon]

After getting the kids settled into their room for the night she went to her own that she shared with Bushi. The leaf woman was still unsure how she felt about the meeting they had just left. Of course she was less than pleased that it had happened in a dive bar but that was out of her control. Apparently it was out of Bushi's control too. Phaedra gave a frustrated sound and paced back and forth.

It worried her that someone she knew, someone she worked with, and that had nothing to do with the whole incident that had happened would be approached by Hestian. She honestly wanted to take her trident and track the man down. Not that she thought she would really be able to do much now. He likely had guards around him. Phae bit down on her lip as she thought about all the bad things that could happen if Hestian went near her boss.

Every so often her green eyes would go toward the door, half expecting her kids to come in saying they were too afraid to be without her. They weren't little anymore though. Unable to find a calm thought she continued to pace.

After getting the twins settled into their room, making sure the windows and doors were locked and the curtains drawn, he gave them instructions to come to their room if they needed anything. After that he headed to the room that he'd be sharing with the Sprite, checking on the door that was between the two rooms, before he settled down at the small desk the room provided. Digging into the pouch at his side he took out a ledger, taking down the fee that he'd paid tonight along with the tribute, then set to doing all of the math involved. He was still well into the black, he wasn't worried about that, but he was more worried about the actual relationship between himself and the guild going forward. He wouldn't know how things were going to pan out there, just as he didn't know how things would pan out with his family.

He lifted his eyes for a moment from his work to look at Phaedra, then down again. At this point he really wasn't sure what to do or say, not wanting to upset her going forward. Not when he wasn't sure if saying anything more then had been said by Hestian would make her even more upset then she already was. Things were rocky between them and he was worried going forward on many fronts and with many parties. Things like things were really complicated, huh?

After turning toward the middle of the book he gave the list of materials that he had to work with a scan. He'd need to set to work making new pieces to sell, those that would look fancy and would draw in his best customers. He needed to prepare for a tribe to Matori after all so that he could get things flowing and see about finding people there that wanted to join up. He needed various contacts to make things work... and if he could find someone willing to take on someone like Hestian as a husband he felt that might get him back into the good graces of his boss. Now if only dealing with his Sprite was as easy as all of that...

She continued to pace back and forth as Bushi came in and sat down to do his book work. Phaedra ignored it since it was fairly common for him to do at the end of the day. He was all about figures. When she heard a noise from the hall she paused and stared at the door with her breath held in her chest. Only when she realized that she could hear her own blood rushing through her head did she start to breath normally again. Phae felt on edge.

Starting up her pacing she seemed to be fretting over something. The leaf woman would get so close to the door and look as though she were going to open it to make an exit and then shake her head and turn around to walk away. Something was bothering her. So much so that she even stopped in front of her trident and looked at it as if considering something.

Finally she stopped wearing out the floor with her steps and stared at Bushi. Phaedra was waiting for him to say something. She wasn't so sure she trusted herself to start any kind of conversation.

After a time Bushi tucked his ledger back into his pocket before he turned his attention back to Phaedra once more. He studied her closely before he finally said, "I think that you should pack up and head to Awat ahead of me with the children and an escort. I want to make sure that you get back there safely while I get some work wrapped up." He would see about finding someone good, someone well trained, that could bring them back to Awat. He didn't really think anything would happen but he felt that would likely put Phaedra more at ease if they were had a guard for the twins. He knew that it would make him feel better too.

Pushing to his feet he moved to the window, looking out of it, and gave a back and forth from the window. He couldn't see anything suspicious so he felt as though it had gone well with the boss, considering. He turned around to look over at Phaedra again and said, "I should be behind you by a day or so. I just want to see about doing some sales that will help make for the coin spent tonight. There is nothing to worry about, still doing fine." He just hated dropping that much in one go when he wasn't spoiling one member of his family or another. He'd much rather buy things for his Sprite or the twins, but anything else... it could be tough.

In this situation though it had to be done, to make sure the boss was kept happy and everything continued to run smoothly.

When he did speak to her it was about leaving town. With a guard! Phaedra continued to stare at him as he went on about ow he would only be a day or two behind since he wanted to make up for the money lost tonight. She moved over to the bed and collected one of the feather down pillows before throwing it at him with an angry look. "What in Essd's name makes you think I would leave you here by yourself!?" After that she placed her hands on her hips and huffed.

"There will be none of that! The kids would probably think I was leaving you and be depressed the whole way." Phaedra shook her head. That was just what they needed. To panic the kids into thinking their parents were splitting up because their father kept secrets. Big secrets. The thought made her snatch up the second pillow and glare at him. "You tell me right now, Eadenur, how in Jonal's balls did you get involved with all of this?" Her cursing was rare so her cheeks flushed a little when she said it but she still maintained her angry look.

Bushi starred at his sprite as she tossed a pillow at him, allowing it to hit him before he caught it, and held it tightly in his large hands for the time being, "I think that you would do so because it would mean the lot of you getting to hang out in Awat for a while where it's calm and without having to worry." The place was calm to the point of being boring, which was good for the family after everything that they'd had to deal with in the passed few days.

"Come now, they wouldn't think that." He said, then gave her a long look, finding himself wondering if that was even something she'd considered. A thought that he didn't voice because he was afraid of what the answer might be. Instead he found himself starring at her, wanting to insist that she take them and go on ahead. It would be best to get the children back to Awat since he was sure they would be happier there and not have to worry about what was going on.

As his sprite suddenly demanded information from him he gave a bit of a sighing sound, "I'm certain you won't be pleased to hear... though not for the reasons that you're expecting." He said, tossing the first pillow onto the bed that Phaedra had scooped it up off of.

She humph'ed at him when he mentioned the leaving thing again. "So help me, Bear, I will smother you with this one.." She lifted the pillow in her hands.

Giving him a frown as he stated she wouldn't be pleased she could really only stare some more. "I am not pleased with a lot of things at this moment, Bushi. So please.. explain. Now. Before the pillow is traded for my trident." Not that she would use it against him, but she did figure having it in her hand might work to intimidate him some. Though truthfully, it was near where he was so it would mean she'd have to get close to him in order to even get it. "What reasons do you think I am expecting exactly?"

"I should pick you up bodily and send you on your way to Awat... but I will refrain, Sprite." As tempting as it was he had a feeling that if he didn't tie her up and toss her in the back of a wagon that she wouldn't go back to Awat even if he tried to force her to do so. She was beyond stubborn in that way he thought to himself, lifting a hand to scratch at his beard as the studied the none to pleased Leaf Tribeswoman that stood before him.

Giving a nod he said in a hushed tone, mostly to himself, "So I find it safe to assume." Shaking his head he said, "I am just thinking on something specific that you would likely be upset about... more upset about. That being the... ahh... timeline of it all." Drawing in a deep breath he held it, counting backwards for a time, before letting it out slowly. She wasn't likely to be pleased to learn that he'd been in the business not only since they had been together but long before it as well.

Blowing a breath through his bangs he said, "You see... I keep saying to both you and Dovian when he asked that things are... complicated. I've been working for Hestian for a while you see... since I was younger then Dovian and Shura in fact." He sort of muttered the last part, as though not wanting to say as much out loud since it would then tell just how long he'd been in the thieving business. It was something that made him feel a bit old just thinking about it. To think he'd been in the business since he was younger then his children. Huh...

Pillow still in hand she pointed at him with a glare. "Try and you will regret it, Bushi." Phaedra would fight him on that one. Let him try to pick her up and send her away. She could guarantee it would be the first and last time he tried such a thing.

So there was something for her to be more upset about? And he knew this for certain? She eyed him warily. Phaedra took a deep breath to prepare herself for what it was she was going to hear. What came out of his mouth, however, was not what she was expecting. In fact it had her blinking stupidly as her brain processed exactly what he'd just mumbled.

A mix of emotions ran through her and even showed on her face but what was left to be seen was.. Betrayal? Hurt? From the start he'd lied to her? Just as her own father had lied to her about her mother. It was enough to make her take a step back and look at the floor. Phae wanted to cry but she shook her head and sniffed before speaking. "Alright.. and it never occurred to you to get out?" Her question was asked softly.

Bushi gave a shake of his head, "There is and was no leaving for me. I went from living in an orphanage that a was a bit on the over crowded side to working for Hestian. I thought at the age of prentice that I could take care of myself so as to leave more for the others in the orphanage but it didn't... exactly... work out." He shook his head then said, "That is neither here nor there. After I learned the tricks of the trade I also learned that I am better at what I do now then the normal work of a thief."

He lifted a hand to scratch at his beard again, "I'm good at what I do, both buying and selling, making deals, making things, and I basically just wanted nothing more then to make more and more money. Nothing else mattered until I met you... then I had you, then we had the twins..." Money became even more important because it seemed that children needed a lot of things and really, really wanted other things. A lot of other things in fact, all of which he wanted to spoil them with, even things that didn't make sense like Shura wanting all manner of jewelry despite her being so rough and tumble otherwise.

"It was just a job until Gorvis decided to stage this little coup of his. Now that he's dealt with though I doubt there will be any other issues going forward given my long standing position in the guild."

Well at least she knew now why he'd gotten involved to begin with. Still, she wasn't very pleased with him. Phaedra sank down onto the edge of the bed and continued to look at the floor. She wasn't sure really how to respond to that.

Once he said it was all that mattered until her she shook her head. That wasn't true. If it had been he'd have left. Or at least she saw it that way. But again, Phaedra said nothing. Instead she couldn't hold the tears back anymore. They fell onto her cheeks and then made their way to the floor.

"Why did he go after Dovian? What was there to gain?" That she needed to know. In case she needed to keep an eye out for someone else like him. There was no way she was going to let her kids be hurt again.

Giving a shake of his head Bushi said, "There was nothing to gain. Gorvis was a coward and a weakling, he was falling behind in paying his dues, he didn't have many contacts and those he had were leaving him. He wasn't long for the guild so he likely thought if he could take on Dovian or you then I'd be forced to help him going forward."

He hadn't wanted to end things with Gorvis in the way that things had ended but it was just the way of things. The man had a dozen chances to just give up and go home but he'd continued to push and push until there was nothing left to do but to... deal with him. Shaking his head he crossed his arms over his chest before he looked over at his Sprite and said, "We found ourselves at an impasse now... I know that you likely don't want me as I am not and I wouldn't force you to stay with me knowing who and what I really am."

The idea of losing her made his heart ache but it wasn't up to him anymore, was it? If what she wanted was to leave and not look back it was a choice he couldn't very well deny her.

So that was it? The man had thought to get Bushi's help forcefully? Had he never considered asking? Phaedra glared up at him for a moment before turning away from him. For him to be that important to someone inside the guild meant he had to have good standing. It was just... well, he'd kept it hidden from her.

Her long pointed ears caught him saying that she likely didn't want him and she closed her eyes. For a while she remained that way, silent with tears falling, but she eventually looked toward him. At first she opened her mouth to say something but nothing came out so she just closed it.

When she finally figured out what she wanted to do she got up and crossed the room to where he was.

Painful silence seemed to reigned for a long, drawn out time, and Bushi leaned against the wall near the window of the room. It was too long a silence, it was too heavy, and he didn't care for it. He couldn't complain though nor would he even dare to. At the moment he felt that he should only speak when spoken to until he knew where he stood with his Sprite.

Bushi watched as Phaedra approached him, taking in a deep breath, before he seemed to brace himself. He was ready for her to hit him or tell him that she was leaving, certain that nothing good would come of everything that had happened to this point. He'd tried his hardest to keep his job hidden, he didn't want his family to think poorly of him. He'd rather that they had just thought of him as just some lazy, chubby merchant and nothing else. It had worked for a while but it might have been for naught in the end.

She stood in front of him for a moment before she finally reached up and smacked him across the face. It wasn't hard but it was enough to let him know she was upset.

"Don't assume you know what I want, Eadenur." Phae huffed at him.

Then almost instantly she was using both hands to cradle his face and make sure she hadn't hurt him. "Can you tell me one thing Bear? Does me knowing what you do change who you are? Will you act differently with me and the kids?" She was really curious to know the answer to this since it would determine how she dealt with the situation.
