In the baaaaaaag. An actual sting in the bag and succesful and great. WAIT. Is it still a sting if it’s bagging a person and not like...robbing a bank? Or were those two different movies? Robert Newman and Something Redford? Ferd? Furred?

The Corrupted Senshi of Execution paused in one of the hallways on the way to an arranged meeting only briefly. It wouldn’t do to be late when trying to finally make some headway with literally anyone in command. A General Sovereign and a chosen branch of operations wasn’t a direct platoon and commanding officer, but it was something. It was more of an anchor than just filling supply areas of the Negaverse with 48 packs of toilet paper and bottled waters teleported out of Target.

A successful mission means I’ve got something to offer. Do they turn down people in branch applications? I dunno. I dunno what branch Bus is even in. Or who recruited him. Is Stillz under Peacockiness, then? Or under Axis-knight? Well, the Soveriegns are over everyone anyway. Dis ones got that school. And what to expect out of the one that ran the recruiting station of Romano’s was as ephemeral as trying to keep a hold of the actors names from movies at the moment. Or the same as trying to still the butterflies that were rocketing around the empty hollow of Machine’s stomach.

I asked to apply, to meet. We’re meeting, so that’s a good sign, right? Not just stuck at the paper trail. You get to the interview, doin’ a-okay? I wonder if ‘ll be late, ontime, or early, too. There was so much want for a hand to grasp. For Stillz', or for Bus'. But they needed rest. They were busy. They had successes and training and things to do. And if this ended up another failure, another smile and a shaken head that no, Haüyne had no place among this set, there was no certainty that there wouldn't be tears. No one needed to see that.

The door to Lepidolite’s office was open. He tried to keep things as welcoming as possible and the only time the door ever seemed to be closed was when he was in a private meeting or absent. It was fairly easy to tell when he was expecting or accepting company and, in fact, sometimes he seemed to have the door open simply to invite a distraction.

There was no denying that Romano was a busy man, but he was also a social man and seemed to work best when he took regular breaks for conversation or discourse.

He spent his time evenly between the school and his office in the Castle but today his attention was set on the appointments he’d made.

His office was a friendly place, well decorated with things that made him happy. Trophies he couldn’t display in his office at school, or trinkets and décor that simply didn’t fit. His desk was large enough to accommodate the multiple stacks of paper he was working on and still have plenty of empty space to work on.

He was very well aware that his company could arrive at any moment but he was making the best of the time he had; he had an open book cradled in the crook of his elbow and paced the room as he scanned the pages.

Doors to dragons’ dens, repleat with cave systems, archaic and arcane treasures, and not much of a societal preparation for how one went about dealing with the introductory phase of such things.

Haüyne was surprised to find the door open, the man in, but similarly not. Silhouette and step were noted from the hall for seconds, then sounded knuckles on the jamb with a crisp one-two, “Sir-”

“General King Lepidolite, sir. Super Haüyne, here about my application...when you’re ready.”

Wait in the hall? Wait there at attention? Was it an important book? It wasn’t normal to just ask in military movies. So the super kept peace, and quiet, eyes saucered and mouth drawn small and sideways.

Lepidolite was a tall man, broad shouldered and imposing when he wanted to be. Rarely was such the case off the battlefield; instead, he glanced at Haüyne and seemed to beam at the Senshi’s presence. He closed the book with one hand before depositing it on the nearest shelf. He approached, hand extended in greeting.

“Haüyne, of course,” he greeted. He didn’t wait for the Senshi to offer the hand; he took it himself and gave a firm, friendly shake before drawing away and gesturing towards the seat in front of his desk. “You’ve got excellent timing, I was just thinking about you a moment ago. Come in, sit down.”

His voice was deep and commanding, but still so friendly—perfect for someone whose job required such charisma and trustworthiness. He moved past the Senshi to close the door before crossing the room and taking his own seat behind the desk.

“I was quite pleased to receive your application. I’m always excited to see someone really taking such an investment in their future. And you, you’ve got your whole future ahead of you! You probably could have gone into any branch you liked. So I have to ask,” he ruffled through papers but seemed to know exactly where the papers he wanted were, “What’s made you set your eyes on this one?”

There wasn’t really anything to fear in a closed door. It was normal. Executives in shows closed the door of their office all the time. Why the thoughts of Romano’s, a school, and a closed door brought a giddy-up to Haüyne’s heart drowned behind reasonable suggestions to the politeness of of the former action: if this was to be a denial, at least it wasn’t going to be a public one. It could remain as private as having not been informed to friends in the first place. Peeps probably weren’t pressing their ears to any Sovereign office doors.

He certainly sounds like someone who works at a school. Like guidance counselors and principals and college meetings go. The corrupted took the seat quickly, but worked nails into the shining, magical, vinyl-like material that made up the knees of bloodied boots. Any branch? Wouldn’t THAT have been nice.

“Not… not so much, sir” The flattery was kind, but they were both probably aware that Umber hadn’t been so much of a CO thus far, being god-knew-where and if he were the Senshi’s CO, and that no one else had been willing to take the creature on. “I’m working on being a stuntperson. Like for TV and movies and mo-cap and all that stuff. It puts me a lot of places, sir. With a lot of different crowds. Learning stuff. And people laugh at fools and mess ups and they don’t see me as much. They open up, skivvy side. It even worked out and I found a mark. It was done through General Aurostibite. With the Axis-Power all showin’ up to do-the-dew. So we gotta new star in the wallet...like a proof. I can smile and chatter good and can look for the signs alright where things don’t add up. And that’s Infiltrations’ job in the Manual O’ Operations, I thought. “

“Sir.”

“An executioner's supposed to be a public face for the monarch. So...public face…Execution...all that.. ” lightly drummed fingers lifted, knotted, nailed into the dips between knuckles and no doubt left crescent moons in the flesh beneath.

Romano nodded, apparently pleased enough with Haüyne’s answer. He was invested in this discussion and he watched the Senshi intently. A smile had twitched onto his face and he commended, “Good answer.”

Content, he leaned back in his chair.

“That’s a solid plan, too. As long as you don’t get hurt.” He didn’t chastise for choosing a dangerous career, but just seemed contemplative. He nodded another approval. “But it could be good training, and we Negaverse folk are a hardy sort. And, you’re more than that. I value anyone with a good head on his shoulders, and I’d warrant you’ve got one. That’s a solid justification you’ve got there, and I’d be happy to have you. Although,” he shrugged.

“I have to say, you’d be of more use to us as an Eternal, though…”

His voice drifted off but he hadn’t spoken in a condescending manner.

It wasn’t criticism—it was invitation.

He took the other present-accounted-for General-King being called ‘Axis-power’ with a smile. It was a notch to part of the foursquare diagram that said CoolBiz in Machine’s mental warehouse. The gentle admonishion about danger and injury came across more dadly, guidance counsellor-y, than the corrupted had been mentally prepared for all over again. Words struggled to catch up to time as he offered something that sounded like an acceptance, which made for rapid blinks and a flush behind the torii blushing. Don’t tear up, don’t tear up-

“- A whu? As?” Haüyne’s gaze snapped to his face from the meandering somewhere around the barrel of his chest and shoulders during the initial explanation of purpose. “I’d be a what? Can I qualify for a promotion? What do I gotta do? I mean, hell yeah, I’d love to be one and be more useful, cause they can do the port thing of more than SNAFU-situations for actual operations.”

‘ happy to have you ‘ So I’m in? That means I’m in right? The corrupted stood up from the chair, all limbs and energy unbridled again with hope. “Whatever you need, Sir. “

Lepidolite looked at Haüyne for a moment longer before a laugh fell from his lips. “Is it really so hard to imagine you’d be offered a promotion? I mean, if you don’t think you’re ready, we can put it off. But you’re taking some pretty big steps towards your future, why not bundle them all together?”

Haüyne’s enthusiasm was charming, at least insofar as Lepidolite appreciated anyone who had the energy to be excited about moving up in the world. He’d seen too much complacency, too much shadiness.

For btter or worse, Haüyne responded differently from most of the candidates he offered a promotion. It was refreshing, but came with the usual concerns.

“Now, you know what a promotion entails. You know it’s going to be a lot more work, and a lot of responsibility. But you came here looking for that already, didn’t you? You don’t join a branch if you plan to screw around. So if you’re ready,” he searched the Senshi’s face for any trace of doubt, “I’d do that promotion right here, and while you’re catching your breath and feeling out your new power we can go over the basics of the branch. What you don’t already know, at least.”

“ Picked a lucky name, Sir—no amount of work, injury or challenge is going to Buster me. “ Keaton. Buster Keaton. ‘-made without script or written directions of any kind,’ made we are. Made, but make ourselves.

“I’m ready. Ready.” Execution braced the heels of boots back against the forelegs of the chair only recently vacated. It should be enough to fall back into if that became absolutely necessary. But they were expected to be able to keep their feet, right? And to have something in them afterwards, covering ground and catching breath like he said. The big leagues mean the whole Stiff Upper business. About all that there was to go on for first hand witness of promotions or conversions for the senshi was Stillz' conversion. The processes were probably a bit the same, with energy being fisty-chested. Probably. “Yeah. Good to go, Sir.”

Lepidolite gave him only a few seconds to prepare himself; he wasn’t the sort to waste time and valued effectiveness. He had done more promotions than he could recall, but each one was special and important, and required the upmost diligence.

Lepidolite was a diligent man, and an effective one.

His hand rested over the senshi’s chest; it was a heavy weight, strong but not quite imposing—at least, until it slipped into his chest and sought out the starseed. He gripped it carefully, mindful not to do anything that could cause any sort of damage. “There we go, almost there,” he said, just as he began a steady flow of Chaos.

It wasn’t a long process, it never was. The pain made it feel like the seconds ticked on, he remembered that from his own upgrades.

A few seconds for a wave of new power? He’d taken it in a heart beat. It hurt, though. He remembered that.

But you didn’t get this far without hurting for it.

It was more like a wall socket being plugged into oneself than the other way round, larger knuckles and broader arm wrapped with armor behind it, broader shoulders behind that, pronging into the chest and setting off every nerve on blue-white alert bled red. One of the dagger-gloved hand’s made Lepidolite’s purple lapel into a liferaft, thumb and first fingers coated shimmering first, and then fully blued in a new uniform.

“Ha…….hahhh..hah…” Teeth cut the words out first, cut oxygen into carbon dioxide. “Nice. Yeah? “

Extra weight in the trunk. More butt bow rope. Wings. Flappy-butt. The world felt full of echoes, full of indistinct voice like in a public indoor pool or at a gymnasium. Screams, there in that echoed sound, like in dreams half-remembered. Every limb felt aching and energized all the same. At least the eyes of The Romano weren’t far, or unpleasant to look at. They’re blue.

Machine carefully let go of the man’s jacket, trying not to draw attention to having needed the third point of balance. “Responsibilities of the branch….righto. How do I do for ya, chief?”
