Quote:
Occurs March 13th.

When Lovina got anxious, it hardly ever felt like this. Her stomach knotted, and she got these ugly butterflies in her stomach like they were trying to catch any food she ate. Her mouth was dry. She felt completely restless. While she was tired, she was wide awake. Worst of all, she couldn't do anything about it because she couldn't even focus on a task around all the anxiety.

Xi-Wang had sounded pretty dejected over the phone. No, really dejected. And usually her friend kept to himself a lot — it was like pulling her own nails out to get him to talk about his boyfriend — so the fact that his concerns were starting to show meant the house was probably on fire and he lost his spot at the university and his boyfriend and his family died and the White Moon broke both of his legs so badly that they had to be amputated and someone in the Negaverse just tried to eat him. At least; it was probably worse than that. And Lovi had no idea this entire time. Talk about being a horrible friend.

Or she felt that way. So, as she tried to move around her worry, Lovi set about cleaning up her space. While her dorm was small, she kept it fairly decorated — a hand-knit rug with complex damask patterning was the only object on the floor besides her host of plastic organizers. She kept a vintage tea table on top of the rug, beat half to death as it was, where a few plates crowned with a stuffed unicorn sat. Most of the rest of the room looked a similar offbeat vintage crossed with stuffed toys, like a shelf of small, handmade mirrors from a bygone era surrounding a pink stuffed heart left over from Valentine's day. Her ancient nightstand, however, remained devoid of all things but a similarly old alarm clock.

Try as she might, she couldn't make the tiny room any livelier. She already sat all her stuffed toys out to brighten up the boring military feel of the space, and she couldn't have any candles to make it look more inviting, and the potpourri she had was totally long dead (and she kept forgetting to refill it). So she just wrung her hands and looked at her clock and hoped Xi-Wang would text her if he forgot her dorm number.

He knew the moment he let anything slip with Lovina she'd worry, he knew how their friendship worked, he had always been good at keeping things to himself and she knew it. She knew if he let things slip it wasn't because he was seeking sympathy or attention, he didn't like to trouble others if he could help it, but rather that it was bothering him too much to hide.

It was because he knew Lovina that he knew he had worried her, and he felt bad for doing so, and so he'd taken the time to get a gift for her. He wanted to make up for worrying her, he hadn't meant to, and knowing how she kept her room decorated he'd bought something he felt appropriate for her in the hopes she'd enjoy it.

Approaching her room, wrapped gift in his hands, he toed her door rather than knock, as his hands were full, and waited for her to answer her bedroom door. He still couldn't believe he'd graduated from this place and it was no longer his home, not that it had served as his home for long. He'd transferred as soon as it had opened but he had been close to graduating by then, not some freshman or anything.

"Lovina." Calling out, just to let her know it was him knocking.

Lovi sprung out of her chair as soon as she heard the brush of digits at the door. Xi-Wang's soft voice was somehow softer than the knock, which she would've teased him about if this was at all an occasion for lightheartedness. But as she was currently fretting about how his whole life was definitely falling apart at the scenes and considering harboring him under her beda nd helping him put together a new identity in some makeshift Witness Protection Program, she couldn't swallow her nerves enough to tease him about anything.

She ran to the door, clipping the tea table with her foot (and cussing about it), and nearly threw open the door as soon as she reached it. "Xi-Wang!" She breathed, and when she went to hug him, realized that there was an obstruction between her and him.

He brought her a present! "Oh my god, you shouldn't have! What am I going to do with you?" Her hands flew to her face and she practically mooned over the gesture. "Okay, okay, calm down Lovina, we've got real talk to do. Come in! I wanna know what's going on. Ummmm, we'll just sit around the table. Is that okay? I've got these cute floor pillows that my mom got me and that seems more serious than just sitting on the bed… Ooh, I'm bad at this." Caught between putting her fingers in her mouth and practically dragging her friend inside, Lovi settled for catching his elbow while teething her free hand's nails.

"Okay so, hold on." She held her hands out to him as if the gesture alone could pause all life, then rummaged under her bed. Out came two beautifully embroidered floor pillows, one in satin pink and the other in a rustic gold, each with beaded fringe at their seams, and laid them opposite one another around the table. "That's better." She plopped herself on the pink one.

"So." Her hands flatted on the table as she looked at him. The present in his hands could wait, she decided. Things were Happening. "Real talk. What's going on with you, Xi?"

"Not hug me?" He suggested with a smile. He'd heard her rushing for her door knowing she was likely going to jump him, he'd braced for it, but it seemed she had managed the time to notice his hands contained a small package which he held carefully. Shaking his head he handed her the gift as he entered her room, hoping no one with the school found out about his visit, it might cause rumors to circulate about the school. This might be a military school, and rather strict, but it was still a school filled with teenagers...rumors spread and they did so fast.

Under the wrapping paper was a box and inside was an antique tea tin. It wasn't one which boasted some label so it was one a person had once owned that was personal, not what the tea would have been bought in at the store. Inside he'd filled it with some floral scented dried stuff, he honestly couldn't remember what she called the stuff, he knew she had some in her room all the time though. He'd described it at a store and had been helped, by a middle aged woman, in what the store had to offer and in which ones were popular. Sniffing them all had gotten him sneezing a bit but he'd picked what he thought she might like.

"It's fine Lovina, you're worrying too much." Pressing his hand to her shoulder as he went to take off his shoes and seat himself on one of the floor pillows she'd pulled out from under her bed. At least she seemed to be calming down, that was good. "A lot...all of it personal. I think I'd rather have mirrorspace trying to kill me again than all of this." He didn't mean it, he really didn't, but right now it seemed like mirrorspace trying to kill him would be preferable to the personal issues going on. He wouldn't think that later on down the road, not a chance, mirrorspace trying to kill you was not fun.

Folding his long legs up, and under, himself he settled comfortable on the rustic golden pillow. "I've gone over it all already with others...but you are one of my best friends." And he could explain everything to her really, it wasn't so hard. He didn't feel like he was intruding upon her life like he did with others, as he lived with said others.

Lovi didn't know the best time for opening gifts around something like this, so she kept the small, square wrapped thing between her fingers and mostly just held onto it. Her attention was still on Xi-Wang and all the trouble lining his face. She almost wanted to ask him who she had to kill, but he knew she was in the Negaverse, and that gesture might be taken a little too literally. If it was for Xi-Wang, she'd probably try to do it, but Lovi doubted she had the stomach for murder. How cold-blooded did someone have to be to pull that off?

Though when he mentioned mirrorspace, she nearly threw the box at him. "Shut. Up." She spoke mostly with concern. That was totally tasteless; Xi-Wang knew Lovi worried about him, and to be looking for another round with mirrorspace really jerked her around emotionally. But she managed the tears that welled in the corners of her eyes, and pressed her sleeve to them when she absolutely had to. "You know I love you like a brother, right? So don't joke about those things. It could happen again, you know? I don't want to think about how that would go." Badly. It would go badly. And Lovi wasn't going to have that, even if she had to ground Xi from mirrorspace.

Finally she couldn't wait any longer. Her painted nails dug in near the top of the wrapper, tearing as gently as she could to avoid disturbing the start of the tale. And as she went, her brows scrunched up with confusion — what kind of box was this? It looked totally old, but it didn't really have anything on it. A jewelry box maybe? No, that'd be weird. And it had a smell to it, too. Way more floral than what she was expecting out of something old, like mustiness. But when she found the latch and opened it, she knew precisely what was inside and she couldn't help but grin broadly.

"Oh my gosh," she couldn't suppress an interjection. "You spoil me! You're, like…" She faltered for words. "I love you so much!" Xi-Wang was hands-down the best friend she could ever ask for.

Swallowing some of her excitement, Lovi nodded. "So start from the beginning?" She didn't really know where the beginning was or how long it would take, but she doubted either one of them would be getting tired anytime soon.

Ducking at her words, in case she either hit him or threw something at him, he knew the words would gain some reaction though he wasn't expecting that. He did know she'd been inside of mirrorspace, it had never had come up. He really didn't like knowing his words had impacted her that much, he'd more meant it as one of those comments people made, like those ones about drinking bleach or other such things. It wasn't meant in a literal manner, mirrorspace still left him nervous when he went there. He was sure the place had a mind of it's own and some sort of personality, he just had to hope it liked him.

"Sorry...and yeah it could, but I don't think it will. The place does have some...intelligence though." He didn't mention the personality bit, cause that made the place more dangerous than it simply having intelligence did, it meant you could upset it or hurt it's feelings without knowing it.

"It's a tea tin...but I know you like that stuff...so I thought I'd get a two for one gift." She could move the smelling stuff, he really couldn't remember what it was called, to another container and use the tin for it's true purpose - tea. "I'm glad you like it..." Ducking his head for a moment before nodding.

"There was an event on Valentines day...early in the day...mid morning to afternoon. I-I didn't know it was a blind dating event and a friend convinced me to go - to make friends...and help get me and Caleb talking." Had he told Lovina that things there were not so good? He couldn't honestly remember, he sort of hoped he had right now. He didn't want to rehash all of that, it was a lot.

"Caleb saw me there talking to someone, I wound up making a friend there, and when I got home later that night...things didn't go so well. I earned it though...I messed up - a lot." Trailing off as his dark eyes moved right and left, a few times, over the table top. His fingers toying with the sleeves of his top as he sat there. "I should have realized how much I was messing up - had messed up.'

"I don't really know much about it," Lovi admitted, "but anything that tries to kill you is super bad news. Especially if it's all weirdly magical." Magic came with all new ways to accidentally get killed, and while Lovi loved the freedom that came with hanging out after school, she wasn't too happy with running into someone who could possibly kill her just because she wore dark green. That seemed like totally bad karma for them, too. And Xi-Wang already put himself through enough by going out and doing stuff for his court; he didn't need to go looking for murder situations to go along with it.

Kidding or no, Lovi wasn't going to have that kind of talk in her dorm.

"It's lovely, and so are you!" She sprung up like a weed, rounded the table, and leaned in to give him a tight squeeze (non-negotiable — her favorite finicky friend couldn't wiggle-worm his way out of that one!) and a peck on the cheek. But she didn't stay long, she knew personal space was something he liked to have from time to time, so she returned to her side of the table without further incident. "You were spot on, though! Potpourri is totally one of my things. My mom used to keep a bunch around, so it kinda reminds me of er from time to time. I think it's a comfort thing."

But Xi-Wang was starting to tell his story, so she fell silent and committed herself to finding a new place for her gift. While she listened, she tried the little end table and found that the tea box suited it pretty well, but it lacked the holes to let the smell vent. So it got dumped into her original potpourri container and the tea box found a nice display corner on a mounted shelf.

When she returned, she wore a look of concern. Her lower lip pouted out the way it often did when she watched her friends hurt. "But you did what was good for you, babe. It wasn't your fault anyway — someone else signed you up. And maybe they woulda fined you if you didn't show for your date, you know? It's not like you've got money coming out of your ears." She sat herself on her pink pillow once more.

"Do you need a place to go? I can talk to my mom for you. My old bedroom's not huge, and it's a bit outside the city, but it's someplace to stay if you need it.

"But that's not all, right?" Xi-Wang was nothing if not resilient; she didn't think a boyfriend scandal would be what broke him. But maybe it was — Lovi had never been in love before, or really had a relationship of her own. Maybe they could be that bad?

He really wasn't going to tell her how he went to mirrorspace fairly often...that it was their home, sort to speak. Xi-Wang had a feeling the idea of him going there, at all, would worry Lovina and she might just find some way to insist upon going with him, incase it tried to kill him or anything. Then again...she might also somehow try to tie a string or rope about him so she could somehow pull him out if he went in for too long. She'd have him call her, and meet up, before he headed into a mirror just so she could rope him up and let him go in then. His imagination was already coming up with some wild ideas, some things he could almost see from her, and yeah he was not going to let her know how often he did go there.

His thoughts, which were currently stuck on her trying to implant a microchip in him, were derailed as she came up and squeezed down on him like a snake trying to strangle it's next meal. He might have been surprised but once he was over that he let her continue her hug, or at least he figured it was a hug, and waited till she sat down in order to smile at her. He was glad she liked the gift, enough to hug him and press a kiss to his cheek. "I'm glad you like it." At least now he knew what it was called, the smelly stuff, though he was sure he'd forget it by the end of the night...or tomorrow.

"I doubt there would have been a fine if I didn't turn up. But I did go along with the idea...even though I didn't know it was a blind date event." He knew it was good for him, it had helped, but it had hurt someone else and he didn't like to hurt other people. He tried not to hurt people, at least to the best of his ability. "It just...apparently I made a lot of mistakes and hurt Caleb - a lot...and I was too stupid to notice...or too concerned with my own life." Truthfully he had, in part, been busy trying to keep his secret from the other especially after mirrorspace had acted up back at the end of last year. He'd been gone for a while and had needed to cover it up, and it hadn't been easy.

"N-no...I have a place. Two from my own court took me in...because Caleb threw me out." Biting down on his bottom lip he shook his head. He deserved it though. He'd done a lot to hurt the other and it was expected that Caleb, or anyone, would have enough of it at some point and just end things. He didn't like bouncing around from place to stay to place to stay. It felt like he'd never have a home...

"You know my mother and father are divorced...right?" He didn't think he'd ever mentioned that his parents had ever been married. She knew his mother had a wife, he had complained enough in the past about both of them. But had he ever mentioned his father having been married to his mother? He honestly wasn't sure.

"I've spent years on and off trying to find anything to tell me his name...I've never known even his name...just that my mother hated him and left him...she made sure he'd never find me."

"I'm proud of you for doing it. Getting out there is super tough, yeah? It takes a lot of guts to show up to something like that, especially a blind date event." She smiled. "If I was there, though? Oh my gosh, I'd be totally mortified to find that out! Lovina Lee is suddenly about to be dating someone instead of just hanging out with a stranger! I bet you did great!" She reached her socked feet under the table to nudge his leg affectionately.

But Xi-Wang had his reasons to be down on himself, even if Lovi didn't fully understand them. If she had a boyfriend, would she be totally pissed about him showing up in a blind date thing if he didn't know that was what happened? Especially if his friend was the one that did it? Lovi chewed on her lip. She decided she'd be more pissed at the friend, and just lightly annoyed with the boyfriend for going along with it. But the boyfriend would, theoretically, keep coming back to her anyway, so wouldn't that mean something? She didn't know; people were super complicated. Caleb probably had his reasons. And people had bad days all the time — maybe the stuff came out when Caleb already had a completely awful week or something?

Whatever, though. ******** him if he was going to hold it against someone as sweet as Xi-Wang.

"Wow, what the ********?" Lovi's fist hit the table a little hard, and she shook out the aftermath. "He threw you out? What the ********. So help me I will slap the s**t out of him for that. That's completely uncool." Mentally she took back all the excuses she made for this random stranger. "He better hope he never runs into me on the street. Throwing away your livelihood over something as simple as that? Nu-uh. Not okay. Not gonna stand. Nope."

But Xi-Wang had a court who supported him, so he was okay. And it meant he wouldn't have to put up with her mother, who would probably be asking all the questions about how he knew her and if they were dating and why weren't they dating and what's gay and all that other nonsense. He was safe, and he had other friends that could help him out better than Lovi trying to convince her mom that Xi-Wang was good people and maybe don't be racist.

Knowing that he was safe cooled her heels a little so she could listen to what he said next. "I know now," she offered helpfully. "We never talked much about your fam. And it was always school activities and hanging out outside the house and such. Were you looking for him? I can't really imagine what it's like to not know your dad. I think something like that would totally eat me until I got some answers."

The little nudge from her was comforting, however small an action it was. He had done well...he'd made a friend. Kit was nice, different from most of his other friends. He flirted a bit and used little cute names for him, a lot of them, and he didn't think he was a bother at all.

"Well...he told me I had till the end of the week...but who is going to stay after a fight and when that's said?" He questioned softly. He'd had the option to stay but how uncomfortable would it have been? It wasn't his home, had never been, and he was allowed to stay for a week. That was just...something he couldn't do. It was too wrong a feeling for him.

"Please...I don't want him hurt." Though thankfully he reminded himself that Lovina didn't know Caleb, and had never seen him. So he should be safe...he hoped, he really did. He didn't want to drag the other into his life somehow.

"I've always wanted to know about my father...I started looking for papers the last.." Trailing off to think he tilted his head a bit. "Year...maybe two. Closer to two. I finally found the papers, divorce papers, marriage certificate from China. My birth certificate. I took them and I'm keeping them, she won't need them." Why would she ever need those things? He'd also taken anything else he needed. "I just need to somehow find him though. I don't know if he's in this country or in China or if he's even still alive. My mother never spoke of him, unless it was to say how much she hated him - hated the arranged marriage."

Lovi heaved a great sigh when Xi-Wang pleaded with her not to hurt him. He was being a total jerk, though! Maybe Xi-Wang was too polite to deck his now-ex-boyfriend, but she didn't have to be! And she definitely wasn't, either — she had no problem giving that boy a few slaps on Xi-Wang's behalf. But if he insisted… ugh, sometimes it was such a drag to play the nice, listening friend that totally didn't step out of her way to give someone a piece of her mind. Whatever. She'd make do.

No, she wouldn't make do. She'd find out what this Caleb guy looked like and then she'd go out and murder his face off as Chrysoprase. Maybe pull her first starseed, even. Then she could make Stellerite proud and solve a problem for Xi. Maybe not tell him that's what happened to his mysteriously disappeared ex, but…

Well, the fantasy was nice.

"Wow, so you like… Basically have his identity, right?" Lovi scooted closer to the table, her upper arms pressing gently into the edge. Didn't people use that kind of stuff to make fake IDs? So Xi-Wang could like, go secret agent and impersonate his dad's identity and ask important questions around China until he found out where his dad worked and did some awesome big reveal at the end! Unless that really only happened in the movies, which would be a total drag. "Are you okay with dong that? Keeping all those documents, I mean. I feel like your mom might get really mad if she found out, you know? Like, what if she goes looking for something else later and finds out by accident that they gone, and figures out you took them? You might be totally screwed, you know?

"I just worry about you. And what if your dad majorly sucks? Like you track him down, and at the end he's totally awful to you?" Lovi bit her lip through a frown. "You're really really really hard not to worry about. You're just such a teddy bear that I don't want more bad showing up at your door!

"Will you at least promise to keep me in the loop? You know what's best for you and all, so whatever you do, I'll stick by you. Just let me help you get some things off your chest from time to time, 'kay?"

"I do...finally. Zhào Kai is his name...I know his name finally." His mother had at least not changed his last name, or taken on her maiden name and passed it to him. He shared something with his father, maybe even some features. "The character used means victory." It was nice knowing his fathers name, it felt like a missing piece of a puzzle was there now. It didn't matter that the puzzle piece was small, it was still a piece and he had it. "They were married in Hunan Provence. It supports the idea that my mother was from there. I just don't know about my father." At least not for sure, but it was likely that he was from the same place.

"I'm ok with it...I need them, or I will. She had them hidden away in a bag. I don't think she's ever touched them." Her hate for his father, for the country she'd come from, and her own family was too strong he figured. Not to mention she couldn't pin it on him. He'd mirror walked into the house and done his searching, he no longer had house keys.

"If she goes looking and finds out she can't prove it...I don't even think she can find me. She'd have to find me on campus." She didn't know where he'd been living. If he were to get seriously injured, or die, she wouldn't know and even if she somehow found out he doubted she'd care. She might put on an act but that's all it would be - an act. With the most recent development he really was sure his mother didn't love or even care for him. These papers were a chance to find some family, related by blood, who might care. It was also a chance to connect with his own heritage, something his mother had disconnected him from when he was a child.

"I can just hope he is ok. It's not like I'm going to move in with him or anything. I want to at least know him, if he wants to know me." He wouldn't force himself on anyone, that wouldn't be right to do, but he had to try. He'd wanted this for so long. He just didn't know how to start the search now. He'd known he would need these papers but now that he had them he was lost...the next step he didn't know.

"Mmm, of course." It was his turn, for once, to move over to Lovina and hug her. "I'll keep you in the loop...but I'm not a teddy bear...wrong kind of bear." Smiling at her as he settled himself at her side.

Names had meaning? Lovi never thought names meant much of anything aside from sounds that people responded to. Having names that actually meant something, like in Chinese, seemed like a really cool concept. Maybe she'd learn Chinese after all?

"Wow, um… I wish I knew what to do with that stuff. Maybe you can, I dunno, call somebody from there? Wait, you're still working on your Chinese… Hmm, that's a total stumper." Lovi poked her index fingers together repeatedly. She never had the mind for puzzles like this, and couldn't offer much more to help Xi-Wang. Nobody she knew was in the business of tracking random people down. Unless she could find someone in the Negaverse? There was a whole branch dedicated to information, and that was totally like a human Google search, so maybe someone from there would know something? "I could ask around the Negaverse? Maybe somebody there knows how to find a missing person. I can just say it's for my friend, and that you're good people." She wouldn't be lying, anyway.

At least it sounded like Xi-Wang had a plan to keep himself protected. "I trust you," she conceded at last. It kinda sucked to just give up trying to keep him safe like that, but Xi probably knew better than she did about how to deal with this. Xi knew his mother and his freedoms and all that. Plus he could walk into Mirrorland or whatever it was called, even though she wished he'd never set foot in that place again.

"I totally get you. Nothing wrong with finally meeting the guy, right? And if he's a total grouch about it, you can just blow him off no problem. Like 'whatever, a*****e. I was doing you a favor anyway'." Yeah, she could warm up to the idea. It didn't have to be a big thing. And Xi was a lot stronger than he let on sometimes.

And she was incredibly happy to receive his hug for once, and gladly wrapped her arms around him to squeeze him tight. "Thanks for coming out here. It was super awesome to see you again, and to find out what's up. Plus, potpourri!" She breathed a grateful sigh as she released her friend.

"I wish I knew someone to call over there." And that the charges wouldn't likely be through the roof, he was sure something like that would be expensive. But how to even get a Chinese phone number to call and who? Did he look for a lawyer? Some one in the government...he honestly didn't have a clue. he just knew he had important information which would help him find his father, or so he hoped. "Mmm, I mean I think my Chinese might be good enough to manage a conversation. I jut don't know if I'd know everything I'd need to for that sort of talk." And it wasn't likely that whoever he talked to would know English, he didn't want to assume or expect such.

"I mean...maybe. I just...don't want to owe any favors." he trusted Lovina, but he knew her. He didn't trust the others there - he didn't know them. He didn't want to be in debt to people he didn't know. Did he even want them to know his family, or of him? It was a tempting offer and one he desperately wanted to accept, it might really help. "I-I think I'll see if I can't find something out. maybe I can find an answer online first..." Oh, he really hoped he could. It would suck to have gone through what he did for that information, to look for so long, only to not be able to use it.

"Mmm, I would hope he would want to meet me. I don't know if he even knew my mother was pregnant....I was born after the divorce." At least he thought so, was fairly certain that was the date for the divorce. He had looked over it but he could be wrong, he'd yet to put all the papers to memory, like he wanted to.

Shaking his head he smiled at her, she was easy to please and really had a bright personality most of the time. She was a pick me up and he needed her at times, like now. "You are easy to please...I like that." The same as he was he supposed. Simple things...little things. He wasn't a complicated person and he didn't need big, grandiose, things.

"The offer's open if you need it, 'kay?" She understood not wanting to owe anyone any favors — sometimes those favors had nasty consequences — so she gave up pursuing Xi on it. He got this far, so she was sure he could figure out the rest of the way pretty easily. And if he didn't, it wasn't like he was losing anything. The guy was out of his life from the start.

Lovi stood up with him. "Google has all the answers, you know?" Xi could work his Google-fu and maybe even break into the system or some such. Maybe that's his true calling? Xi-Wang, expert hacker! All you systems are belong to him! Or something like that. Maybe she was getting a little hopeful, but as she threw her arms around him one last time, she didn't really care. Xi was fun, in his own quiet way. She liked that. She liked him. He deserved good things, not constant barriers and annoying hangups.

Lovi was about to say more when she caught sight of her alarm clock beyond his arm. "Ugh…" She sighed gutturally. "This curfew thing is totally stupid. It's like, five minutes away and they're gonna come knocking to make sure everyone's in their rooms. I bet you're super happy to escape that drag." Lovi knew she would be.

"I really hate to rush you out like this though. Call me or text me on your way back? Or like, Facebook me or something. I dunno. Ugh, this totally sucks. Way to go, Romano's… Hashtag-prison much?" She pouted at her friend exaggeratedly. Why did he have to leave, anyway? Nobody who knew him would think there was anything weird going on between them, including the staff. And those who didn't kinda sucked anyway — they didn't know what they were missing out on! But whatever, Romano's would have its way tonight and Lovi would spend the night all alone and not stay up late except when she wasted a bunch of hours playing Facebook games.

Boo, Romano's.
