Dovian had done something he never thought he would do in his life. He'd taken something without paying for it. Even more so is that he was hiding it in his bag like nothing had happened at all. "I saw that kid." The voice that startled him belonged to a random guy. Though he seemed to be intimidating none-the-less. What bothered Dovian more was the fact that he felt like he was going to be in trouble. The sinking feeling in his gut told him so. But no trouble came. No guards. No whistles and yells. No irons to take him to a cell. Nothing. It puzzled him for a minute. If the guy had seen what he'd done why was he not in trouble right this instant? Then the man spoke again and this time seemed impressed with his skills. Dovian drew his brows together in a confused look before he heard more from the man's mouth. He had talent. He could learn more if he wanted. It was praise at what he'd done and an offer to do it more skillfully. Did he really want that? Perhaps being able to take things with a bit more confidence would be good? He'd be able to get his hands on more of the expensive materials to work with. It could make his own work worth more in the end. That would be nice. Before he could totally process the offer he had the man's arm around his shoulder and he was being led down the street and given pointers on how to do better at being bad. (( kept it vague since I'm not sure how the guy would act. >>;; ))

Bushi was behind his stand, explaining to a fancy looking woman how he'd made a specific hair piece out of feathers that he'd obtained from the legendary firebirds of Sauti. It was a bird straight out of the stories, one that the Alkidike women of Jauhar would fight wars over, and that seemed to be enough to catch her interest. If there was something those in power liked it was to have something rare that the other women of court didn't have yet. To have something they could lord over something was the essence of fashion if the women were to be believed. He was nearing the end of the sale when he spotted his son through the crowd. He opened his mouth, about to call out to him, when someone else did so instead. He found himself watching through slightly narrowed eyes as he watched. Shaking his head he turned back to the woman, giving her a good price for the hair piece, one that he'd normally have set higher so they could haggle it down. What he'd normally do would have to wait though as he didn't trust that one in the least bit. Who knew what he had planned, nothing good. Especially if he thought to get under Bushi's skin by messing with his son. After the sale was finalized he put up a 'Away for Lunch' sign even though it didn't quite apply to the time of day, and put Profit in charge. If he wasn't here she was the best guard dog there was. Once all was in order he did something he didn't normally do, he ran. As he did so, closing the distance between himself and Gorvis his hands went to the pouch on his sides, drawing the knives he normally had hidden away on his person. He didn't often get into street fights like a common thug but if the man pushed him where his son was concerned he'd see him found mangled in a janarim den, "So help me, Nerad, I'll kill him if he starts something." He muttered to the King of Gods and Judgement as he approached the man from behind.

Dovian was oblivious to the attention he was getting from his dad, mostly because he was facing a different direction, so he even missed when his dad started to run. What the boy did pay attention to was the guy who still had his arm around his shoulders. The guy's other hand seemed to be showing him how to do something before he leaned in closer to lower his voice and give him details on exactly how it worked. The boy tilted his head and looked and listened as best as he could. Then the guy pointed to someone and told him to try it. So Dovian nodded his head and moved closer to the person he'd marked as the target. Dovian was unaware that the person that had been selected was in fact an accomplice of the man's and so he wouldn't get into trouble if he failed to do the trick the right way. (Clearly it was a set up to boost Dovian's confidence in the skill.) While he thought he had fumbled a little the person didn't seem to notice and when he pulled a rather expensive looking bracelet from their pocket he seemed amazed at himself. It could be that easy to get things? No more struggling for his materials? No more arguing with his dad about price? Dovian blinked and started to think that he might do it more often. Going back to the guy he held the trinket up and grinned. "That was just as easy as you said it would be."

Bushi gritted his teeth slightly as he saw his son get sent off toward an obvious mark, though obvious only because he was someone that Bushi also knew, and after a moment came back with something shiny in hand. It was something that had his anger rising, more so given the look on his face that seemed so pleased. Walking forward, weapons still in hand, he said in a very serious tone of voice, "I thought that you were planning on becoming a blacksmith, Dovian. I think perhaps you're talking to the wrong man for tips on that sort of profession." His hand tightened on his weapon and he forced himself to count backwards from ten, finding himself wanting to yell... but that would just draw attention. Instead he moved to close the distance between himself, Dovian, and the b*****d that was toying with his son. He had to remain calm, he could scold Dovian later, but for the time being Gorvis was too close to Dovian, not to mention he had an accomplice. Bushi would be only to happen to throw them to the janarim, or worse the Guild Master, but that would have to wait until later.

His grin instantly vanished when he heard his dad's voice and the bracelet was hidden in his hand as he tucked it behind his back. "Dad! I.. I am going to be a blacksmith. I just.." He had to think of something quick to avoid getting into trouble right!? "I just bought something for mom." His head nodded and he looked from Bushi to the guy who had taught him the trick then back. "This is my friend, dad." Dovian was clearly unaware that the two men knew one another or even from where. With the affirmation from Dovian the man grinned and put his arm around the boy's shoulders again and chuckled. "Yes, dad, I'm the boy's friend." The way he said friend seemed a bit off and almost like a threat. "Have to admit that woman of yours would enjoy a nice gift or two, ey?" His eyes glinted a little at Bushi as he was subtly letting the man know that he knew Phaedra. "It would go very nicely with her eyes."

Bushi gave a slight twitch before he said, "You're a poor liar, Dovian." Turning his attention back to the one standing in front of him he said, "Gorvis is friends to nobody but himself." He was a sleazy sort that he didn't really trust, not when it came to his business practices or as a 'friend' as Dovian was claiming him to be. He lifted his free hand, about to catch hold of his son when the man wrapped a hand around his son's shoulders again. Not only that but decided he'd dragging Phaedra into things. He moved quickly for a man his size, his free hand going from out stretched toward Dovian to around the man's throat, the other raising to point his trio of blades toward the man's face, "I'm aware that protocols tell me I'm not supposed to raise arms against another member of our guild, Gorvis, but I will pay the fine, I don't mind doing so in your case." He said, giving his best smile, though it didn't reach his eyes which were gem hard at the moment, "Tell me, do you think you can do your job blind?"

His face made a wince as though he'd been struck. It was bad when his dad knew he was lying. Then again, when did Dovian ever lie? But just as quickly his eyes went wide as he saw his father snatch the man up by the throat. "Dad!" He was confused by this behavior. The man had only said that mom would like a gift and that it would match her eyes. But then he had to wonder how he knew what color his mother's eyes were. The farther threats that were issued by his dad made him take a step back. Was Bushi really going to hurt someone over something like that? "Dad?" The man only seemed to issue a smirk when he was caught by Bushi's hand. "Now now, you're scaring the poor boy. Besides, I only made sure that he wouldn't get caught the next time he took something." He lifted his hands into the air to show he had no weapons. "I don't think I could do my job blind, but how would you survive without that... what do you call her.. ah.. Sprite. I don't imagine she knows about you and your.. career choice." His eyes went to the side to look at his accomplice who nodded at him and started to walk away.

Bushi tightened his hand on the man's throat as threats continued to spill forth from his lips, "Give me a reason, Gorvis." That the man would think to threaten him in such a man just went to show exactly what he was like. Wanting to go tattle to his Sprite like some sort of child who couldn't think of a better way to lash out. His hand remained tight on the man's throat for a moment before he pushed him away, tucking his blades away. "You really should get back to work, Gorvis. I hear that your dues are late again this month? Everyone's whispering about it, that you can't keep up anymore. I wonder how long before your buddy there abandons you too." He might just see it happen. He'd only have to make sure the right amount of gold was floated his way and Gorvis would find himself down one loyal follower, something that could really hobble someone in their business. Something that he was tempted to do no matter what Gorvis did going forward just because the man had mentioned his Sprite not once, but twice now. He really was gutsy, but in this instance he really wanted to see him pay for it. His family was off limits, he'd gone through great lengths with his boss to see it as such, and Bushi could end up compensated for Gorvis's actions, which would turn the guild on the man. Nobody like paying reparations after all.

Gorvis rolled his neck when Bushi finally let go and simply grinned a bit more. "Don't worry about my dues. Our Sprite is very generous to a fellow merchant." He dusted himself off before pulling something out of his own pocket. It was a small trinket but one that should have been on Phae's neck. Dovian stood dumbfounded as the two went back and forth with the banter. Until he saw the man pull out his mother's necklace. "Isn't that moms?" He'd remember that anywhere. He used to play with it when he was little. Dovian didn't think that she would ever sell it or give it away. If she did get rid of it she imagined it going to Shura at some point. Looking at the man he tilted his head. "So you're a merchant like my dad then?" He had to ask because he was far too confused in the moment and his father wasn't giving him any answers or hints at what was going on. The guy laughed and shook his head. "Your dad is no merchant kid. He's a rotten thief. A damned good one too since he's paid for teachers and kept your mother happy." Gorvis moved so that he could drape his arm around the boy once more as though they were old pals. "He's likely the best bandit in Oba and can rob an old woman blind before she blinks." This information had him paling as he looked at his dad. Is that where the money came from? And mom didn't know it? Dovian looked toward where the one guy had gone and paled a little more. "Dad.. Mom is shopping that way..." The boy seemed legitimately worried now.

Bushi's eyes went to the necklace and for a moment his eyes narrowed again, his mind processing what he saw, before he once more smiled in that way that only appeared friendly. So Gorvis really wanted to do this? He wanted to continue to 'poke the bear' as it were. Bushi really didn't feel like dealing with him in such a manner but if he wanted to do so then so be it. He didn't mind destroying the man. After a long moment he said, "Thank you, Gorvis. I've always wanted to test my skills to their fullest." As the man went back to hugging his son he gave a hiss, stepping forward, to cover the small distance between them and producing a dagger once more buried it in the arm the shoulder of the arm that was holding both the necklace and his son, "You shouldn't have come near my family or opened that fool mouth of yours, Gorvis. You call me the best in Oba and now the 'best in Oba' has his sights set on you. Look forward to living in the dirt in a month." Turning to look down at Dovian he said, "Go back to my stand, Dovian. Stay with Profit while I 'haggle' with this idiot and get your mother's necklace back."

It seemed that Gorvis had anticipated that reaction from his rival and so when Bushi stepped forward to bury the dagger into his shoulder the man grunted but moved his other arm toward the boy. The necklace was dropped, as the pain shooting through his arm caused that but he didn't move his arm away from Dovian. For a split second Dovian looked confused as he stood there. Something wet was dripping onto him and he looked at his dad before lowering his gaze. Dovian's eyes stopped first on the dagger that was in Gorvis' shoulder but traveled even more to look at the one that Gorvis had pierced through his side. He stood looking at it for a moment before he looked back up at Bushi. "D-Dad..." And these were the people his father associated with? There was a small expression of disbelief before pain registered fully. Gorvis tsked at Bushi a little. "Now see what you made me do." His voice was uneven as he did what he could to ignore the pain in his shoulder. "What would the guild say to you allowing your son to run free and steal things without bringing him into the fold? Or for me allowing it to happen? Farther more, since I taught your son a skill of the trade he owes me." He was bending the rules a little.

Bushi glanced at between Dovian and Gorvis for a moment, starring at the scene before him, before he gave a bit of a laugh, "Oh Gorvis... all of that really doesn't matter anymore, does it? I mean, I'm going have to pay one hell of a fine I'm sure but..." He gave a shrug as he pulled the dagger free from Gorvis's shoulder... and then made one swift, vicious slash across the man's face that would catch him across the eyes. Once that was done the dagger was tucked away and he stepped closer to Dovian, scooping his son up easily enough. He was deceptively strong after all, "Come on, Dovian. We need to get you do a healer. Let's leave our friend here to regret his life decisions." He'd leave him to question how he was going to get around from now. Maybe he could get a beast that could lead him around. He took a step away from the man before doubling back, squatting down to scoop up Phaedra's necklace, and said, "You know what's funny? Now that I think about it I'm sure the fine will be lessened because I had a deal with our boss to keep my family safe. Hell, it might just be a slap on the wrist after what you did to my son. How funny is that?" Shaking his head he turned around once more, walking away from Gorvis and toward where he knew a healer to live, one loyal to their group. He'd have to talk with her, get Dovian in, and likely pay her more then normal since Dovian wasn't a part of the group. Looking down at Dovian he said, "Once you're patched up we're going to have to talk about your supposed stealing. Not to mention you're going to have to bring a tribute to Hestian."

The movement that Bushi made was decieving! By all accounts the man shouldn't be able to move that fast. So Gorvis had little time to move his head back and even that didn't save him. It was enough to save one eye and that was about it. He let out a growling howl, his hand twisting the blade in Dovian's side before it was pulled out and dropped so that he could cradle his face. "Don't be so sure Bushi. Guild protocol says your son owes me. He's mine Bushi and I will collect!" A threat to be sure but one that had little merit behind it at the moment since he could hardly see. He started to laugh weirdly, a mix of hollow amusement and pain. "That necklace was sold to me by the Sprite. Careful how many rules you break and expect to get away with it. Hestian might call her in as witness." When he was picked up Dovian whined and reached to hold his side. Being moved was a bit too much for him at the moment. "I can walk." He insisted. Which he was fairly certain was the truth, but as to how fast or far he'd get... that was a different story. Once Bushi started to walk toward wherever it was he was taking him, Dovian looked in the direction his mother was supposed to be. "Wait.. Mom. That guy.. ngh.. he went toward mom." As his dad told him they would have a talk about his stealing he seemed to shrink a little, as if trying to make himself smaller. Dovian wasn't looking forward to that at all. "You steal for a living so why am I in trouble?" Not that he'd ever realized that his father did such a thing. "How long have you been lieing to mom?" The questions came out of his mouth to keep him distracted from the pain he felt. Being stabbed was far more painful than getting burned at the forge. "And what is a tribute?" Did he had to sacrifice an animal?

Bushi glanced over his shoulder then called out, "Keep digging, Gorvis. You're going to be begging me for mercy in no time." Shaking his head he continued forward. He didn't buy it that the necklace had been bought in a legitimate manner. Even if it had been the man was baiting him with it and deserved what he got... well no, he deserved the first stab to the shoulder for that. As for the eye, well, that was retaliation for harming Dovian. He was going to wish that he'd just kept walking once Bushi was through making his life hell. "Your mother will be fine. She might not look it but she's twice the warrior I am. If anyone even things of bothering her she will show them who's boss." And it was most certainly not one of Gorvis's little minions. Not that he'd even have any of those left. He was already formulating plans for how to mess things up for Gorvis. It really would be a shame if his contacts started to get taken from him or if his stashes started to get discovered by the Oban guards. A real shame. "I don't steal for a living. What I do is more... complicated then all of that." He said, walking down an alleyway, turned a corner into deeper darkness, and then came up to a door that required him to do a specific knock to get anyone's attention, "I haven't lied... per say." He muttered that part while waiting for the door to be answered, mind racing down several paths at once. He glanced over at Dovian for a moment then said, "You bring him a gift, you apologize, and that's that."

Being told that his mother would be alright made him look at his father with a bit of sarcasm. Dovian couldn't see his sweet mom being a fighter. All she did was cook, clean, and take care of them. Sure she had a stern voice when he or his sister were in trouble but that was about it. Still, Bushi didn't seem to be worried or even going in her direction. "So you sell the stolen things." Was his dad really trying to talk his way out of the truth? Dovian hadn't even realized they had made it to somewhere until the knock. At which point he was looking around and trying to figure out where the heck they were. Then came the "per say" bit and he gave a snort which caused him to gasp in pain afterward. "Yeah. Does mom know? She's always told us that you were a merchant. I doubt she knows what you sell is stolen goods." He was doing his best to hold onto his side and still remain comfortable. Which was a lot harder than it looked. "And Hestian is... your boss? You sell the stuff he steals?" Dovian was just glaring now. Were his clothes stolen goods? Or had they been bought with the money from stolen goods? His training had been paid for with that coin too. "Can't believe you'd lie to mom."
