who Yuri, Yves (????), Lorenzo, and Vesna what A meeting meant to test the extent of Yuri's powers in a safe space where Lorenzo's office in Durem. when An afternoon shortly after Good Buddies weather Drizzling rain, slightly chilly. ______________________
"All right," said Lorenzo, easing himself up from where he was working on the wooden floor of his office and brushing chalk dust off his palms. "That should do it."
"What is it?" Vesna asked, floating around it suspiciously.
"Insurance," Lorenzo replied. "We don't know how necromantic Yuri's powers may be, so this is just a simple protection circle to prevent any souls from being displaced or death gods from preying on any of us if something goes wrong. It's very basic magic- my mother drew circles like this for me to practice in when I was learning, too." He chuckled, "Better still, since neither of you have feet to scuff it, I was able to draw it pretty big."
"Me too?" Vesna demanded. "I'm going to get to see some necromancy??"
"If Yuri's powers are dangerous, I'll separate you," Lorenzo warned, "But based on what we've seen so far, I think it should be safe enough to let you test out your powers in the same room as him."
"Fair," Vesna conceded reluctantly.
"And if you stay, you'll have to listen to me explain the fundamentals of necromancy," Lorenzo warned.
Vesna bit her lip and considered this, but the prospect of playing with a friend overcame the prospect of her fourteenth Lorenzo lecture on magical theory. One doubt remained in her mind, however, and she asked, "You're not going to use the puppets again, right?" suspiciously.
Lorenzo kicked a box behind his desk. "I didn't even bring them out," he lied.

They were standing outside of Lorenzo's office, in the chill. Yuri wasn't ready to go in yet, and Yves was patiently waiting outside with him until he was. He had his umbrella and coat, he was good. Yuri was hardly ever cold and, if he was, his nerves probably didn't even let him feel it.
"It's the big day," Yuri said, more to the door than anyone. He was staring at it with wide eyes, excitement and fear brewing to make the typical Yuri Cocktail. Yves shifted his weight and smiled.
"Yes," he said back.
Yuri turned, his ears bent back in his apprehension. He looked like someone about to give a speech in front of an enormous crowd, something that would undoubtedly also have sent him into a nervous spiral. It wasn't unusual at all to see Yuri muttering to himself to psyche himself up. To his core, he was just an anxious kid.
Yves gave him a sympathetic smile and put his hand on his shoulder to steady him.
"Hey," he said, giving Yuri an encouraging and, he hoped, fatherly nod. "You'll do great. Remember, it's just a little test. That's all. This isn't your final exam."
"I know that," Yuri whined back, shaking his shoulders out. He already didn't have a whole lot of patience when it came to Yves trying to mother hen him; it was hard to feel like a strong, independent Raevan when your dad was babying you. He wasn't very old, yet, but he felt like it sometimes.
Yuri looked guiltily at the sidewalk. "Sorry," he muttered, wringing his hands. "I'm just... really excited. And nervous. I didn't think, um, that I'd be able to do this, and..."
He looked back up at Yves, who was watching him curiously. "Thanks for letting me come here," he finally said, face burning with a sheepish look. Yves lit up like the dawn.
"Of course, I'm happy to let you explore your powers!" Yves crooned, and Yuri immediately recoiled. Oops. Yuri hated it when he treated him like a baby. Yves took it upon himself to move forward by opening the door.
"Ready?" he asked, gesturing for Yuri to go ahead.
Yuri drifted through the door, ears still bent back but shoulders squared. "I better be," he answered, and then added with a careful glance, "Do you think Vesna will be there?"
Yves gave him a funny little smile. "I'm sure your friend will be there." Clearing his throat, he called in as pleasant a tone as he could, "Hello! We've arrived!"

Yves and Yuri didn't need to wait long for a reply. The door to the office slammed open and Vesna greeted them with a bright smile. "Hi hi!" she chimed. "Come in, Dad's just going over his notes. Again."
She led them into the entryway of the brownstone building that made up Lorenzo's home and office. From the first floor, there was very little to suggest anybody lived upstairs- it wasn't clinical, but the room Vesna led them into was very much a waiting room and not a living room. There were more chairs than any family would ever need, and the magazine rack was full, not of books, but of pamphlets which appeared to be handmade and titled with topics such as "CARING FOR YOUR UNDEAD CAT". The decor was comfortable, but carefully impersonal, and perhaps a tad too friendly for a necromancer's office, giving the impression that someone had carefully scoured pinterest for "six ways to make your skulls seem less spooky" at some point in time. There was a bulletin board with community notices, but they tended to run along the lines of "MISSING ARM", "STITCHERY SPECIALIST (ANIMAL LIMBS ONLY)", and "CRYPT FOR RENT".
Vesna glanced back at Yuri and Yves a little self-consciously as she floated through this room, aware that whether or not they were weirded out by the waiting room was the litmus test for whether they were likely to visit again in future. "A-anyway," she said, hoping that maybe if she plowed on enthusiastically enough they wouldn't have time to be weirded out, "Dad's office is this way!"
Lorenzo was on the floor again when she came in, adding a few finishing touches to the magic circle. "Careful where you step," he admonished, getting up and dusting himself off. "Well, I suppose that only applies to you, Yves." Flashing them a Professional And Reassuring Smile, he greeted, "Welcome! I don't often have personal visitors here." He gestured around and explained, "This is my office. I do most of my necromantic work here." The office was similar to the waiting room, if not a little more disorganized. There were piles of books on the desk, on the floor, some open still with objects used as bookmarks. Lorenzo cleared his throat. "Pardon the mess. I don't often teach, either, so I was checking my notes."
Vesna waved Lorenzo's concerns aside. "It'll be fine!" she said, and turned to Yuri eagerly. "Dad says I can play with you! He never lets me watch necromancy stuff."
