Nail Art - Though they usually present as male, Veerle has always had a tremendous love of pretty things and well, girly stuff. They will always, ALWAYS make sure their nails are done up in some pretty color with a neat design. And they will always do these manicures themself. Sure, it might get them some weird looks and nasty remarks, but who cares? Just being gender fluid already does that. It’s fun to paint their nails and doodle neat designs on them! Why, they had Avengers nails for when the movie came out. And just last week, their nails were painted to look like icicles. Besides, being able to do and enjoying nail art has put them in the lovely position of being able to hang out with some neat people. Sure, they might be annoying at times, but they still know all sorts of interesting stuff to talk about and Veerle has no compunctions against sitting in delighted silence and listening as they dolls up their hands.
Musical Theater - More than any other hobby, Veerle truly loves musical theater. Since they were a wee small, they've been volunteering at the local theater, making friends with various casts and crews and becoming something of a pet mascot. Their highest ambition is to someday be cast as either Rumpleteaser or Rum Tum Tugger in a Broadway production of Cats. As it stands now, Veerle practically lives and breathes every element that goes into performing in a musical and loves every, glorious second.
Whittling - The art of carving wood and bone into things snared Veerle’s mind when they were about seven years old and went to see an old man skilled in the art at one of the local art museums. That such dried up and often ugly, dark things could be transformed into delicate, bright little things was fascinating. And nothing would do on the way home, but for Veerle to beg their parents to let them try it and learn. Appropriately, they bought them a small, beginners Swiss Army Knife, several bars of Ivory soap and stood careful watch as they learned through trial and error. While they haven't quite gotten to the point where they can carve bone or antler, they've gotten decent at carving branches into little wooden chains. They've also carved a few pretty little spoons as gifts for their mom. It might take a lifetime to get as good as that old man, but Veerle is willing to put in the work.
Virtues:
Sense of Humor - In spite of their somewhat nerdy exterior and bookish ways, Veerle has a dry, twinkling sense of humor. They love to laugh and considers it the highlight of their day if they're able to coax a chuckle from another person. And they never goes in for the mean, ugly and gross jokes. Those are not humor. Those are crutches for lazy, unimaginative hacks.
Upstanding Citizen - Veerle is an almost model citizen. They never speed, has never gotten a parking ticket in their life and always turns in any cash amount over a dollar that they finds to the police. They aren't trying to be a Scout, honest. They just believes in doing the right thing.
Generous - Even though life hasn't been easy for Veerle, they have always tried to give back something to those around them. Be it time, money or physical labor, Veerle is a giver. They don't see charity as giving in to the leeches so much as they see it as taking the time to make sure that everyone gets a chance to get what they need and want.
Outgoing - Oh hai thar! Veerle would like to be your friend. Untroubled (mostly) by social anxieties of any kind, Veerle wants to just get out there and interact with people. They refuse to be treated oddly due to their fluidity of gender. Veerle will be your friend whether you like it or not.
Flaws:
One-Track Mind - In the midst of their ambitions, Veerle sometimes loses sight of the bigger picture, focusing so hard on one thing that several other, equally important things have passed them by. This isn't such a problem when it comes to schoolwork, but out in the real world, they focus so hard on their goals and their work that they sometimes neglects friends and family. They've narrowly avoided being held back a grade when they were so busy thinking about one test question, that they missed seeing the essay question that made up half of their final grade.
Impulsive - Sometimes, in the pursuit of learning or simply having a good time, Veerle acts before they stop to think or even get permission. Like the time they decided on their own that they were ready to move from soap bars to pieces of wood without checking with their parents. They wound up in the ER with a sliced finger. Or the time they nearly got caught in a flash flood behind their house because they were more interested in getting outside and to rehearsal than they were in taking the two seconds needed to listen to the weather report. Veerle means well and does try to stop and think. But sometimes they have things to do and just can’t take the time!
Temper, Temper - Veerle is a bit of a hothead when they get going. While they don't really yell or argue, they do tend to punch the s**t out of things when their temper is set off. And it really is ridiculously easy sometimes to set them off. They try to keep his temper, honest. But sometimes, someone will say or do the exact thing that they've politely asked them to refrain from doing. Next thing they know, there's another hole in the wall that needs a bit of spackle.
Big Blue Funk - Veerle really hates the word 'depression'. They are not depressed, okay. They much prefer their late grandmother's way of putting it. They are prone to blue funks. Their enjoyment of life doesn't decrease or anything during these periods, they just can't cope rationally with whatever has annoyed them. They will sulk, glower, communicate in mere grunts and pretty much shut themself away until the funk is over. Until they are able to work himself through the funk,they tend to be a silent, gloomy presence. And at this point, friends and family tend to throw up their hands in exasperation and withdraw. Because really? No one wants to deal with a sulky, nearly grown-a** person that wallows in misery.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Eyes: Orange, almond shaped and fringed with long, dark and thick eyelashes
Hair: An orange slightly darker than their eyes, usually worn short and fluffy, but long enough to be played with for when they're feeling more femme.
Face: Oval shaped face, darker complexion, average ears with a nose that tilts up just enough to give them a cute pixie-ish look.
