Today had been a long time coming. Evan had worked hard, and then, just before they’d finished getting everything together, he’d fallen short. He started procrastinating and taking his time and worrying. He kept pretending like he had more work to do when all he really needed to do was just take the last step.
But, failure was a terrifying option, and he didn’t want to let anyone down.
He’d talked himself out of it time and time again, and then…
He hadn’t. He’d taken the plunge.
And he hadn’t told Tobias. Cambria and Zac knew; they’d been pivotal in getting everything together. Evan still couldn’t drive, and he didn’t think he’d ever really want to—even if he hated being a mooch and having to rely on others. But that wasn’t important right now.
What was important was that he’d texted Tobias, bright and early, telling him to meet him at one of the local parks. It was only about ten thirty in the morning when he’d requested he meet him, at a very specific location.
Where Tobias could find him, easily.
If he was just looking for the food truck with the nice, new decal and logo of ‘Snack 'n Cheese’ printed on the side. They weren’t open yet, but they were getting close. Evan was pacing around inside the truck while Cambria got things ready to start taking orders.
Evan kept checking his phone, impatiently glancing out the door and counter as he looked for Tobias.
Their first customer had to be special, and he couldn’t imagine anyone more special than Tobias.

Tobias was so thankful that Evan had started feeling better, started perking back up, and even though he hadn’t seen the other male in a few days…they were texting almost constantly, and it was the way it should be. He had been pretty busy with Negaverse business, and now that both himself and Laurence had been promoted…they had been spending quite a lot of time together.
It was nice.
Really nice.
When Evan had sent the invitation to meet him in the park, Tobias figured that it must be for a picnic or something. A date that the boy was planning. A date that Evan was planning.
The thought was as exhilarating as drinking a shot too quickly.
He brought flowers with him, and a new set of cooking utensils, and tied them all together with a big bow…the result was cute, though now…he wished he had gotten the pack of the different flours…that would be the clever way to impress his boyfriend.
Oh well. Next time.
Making his way to the meeting spot right on time, the blue haired male frowned, looking around and not seeing Evan anywhere…but then…
Snack n' Cheese.
The truck.
For a moment, Tobias couldn’t do much more than gape, eyes wide. Though finally he cleared his throat softly and moved to the ordering window, rapping on it lightly with a knuckle.
“Hey! When are you guys opening? I’m starving.” His eyes sparkled with a mixture of delight and mischief, and he waited to see Evan’s face, hoping that it was radiating with as much happiness as he imagined that it would be.

Evan’s head appeared in the window almost instantly and a smile split across his face. If it had been anyone else, he would have let Cambria answer, but it was Tobias, and he’d been waiting for him.
“Right now! Now that you’re here. I told Cambria that I wasn’t going to have anyone else be our first customer. So really, you’ve been holding up business.”
He leaned over precariously so he could plant a quick kiss on Tobias’ forehead—possibly the first time he’d had a vantage point like this—and he quickly returned to the truck. He gestured towards the menu they had behind him, but also handed Tobias a new, laminated menu.
“You get first pick, anything you want.”
There was nervousness in his face, but there was excitement and hope.
He didn’t even seem to register what Tobias was holding; he was just too fixated on his face.

The smile made warmth spread throughout Tobias’s whole body and he felt his heart skip at least four beats.
The fact that Evan could still smile like that…the fact that he had the energy to lean out of the window and the thought to kiss him on the forehead…it made all of the bad times worth it.
Well, not…not worth it. If he had his way and he hoped that he would, one day—The bad times would disappear. Forever. And Evan would always get to be like this. Look this happy, smile that wide.
…Kiss his forehead that tenderly.
Tobias had to swallow hard, there was some strange emotion trying to well itself up and his eyes were prickling stupidly. “This is the biggest surprise ever, I thought you were just inviting me to a picnic and I brought flowers and my huge appetite…so…I guess I’ll need one of everything.”
He reached into his pocket, holding the flowers and the utensils up for Evan to take and drew out two crisp one hundred dollar bills. “This should cover it, yeah? And you and that lovely lady who’s helping you in there will keep the change as your tip, won’t you?”
Winking, Tobias placed the money on the counter and slid it over to Evan. “I’m starving.”

Evan seemed surprised when Tobias produced the gifts and, while he accepted them, he scoffed at Tobias' money. "I don't need that. You already paid, remember?"
He tried to push it back towards the male, even as he took a whiff of the flowers. It was sweet, and he smiled as he looked at them fondly. "You spoil me. But I am really happy you could make it. I'm not making you everything on the menu, by the way."
He already seemed to has made up his mind and added, "you'll be full and the rest will go to waste without you properly appreciating all the love I put into all is my dishes. So I will make you one thing at a time, starting with today's special, and you can keep coming back for more until you're full. There's not a lot of room back here, but if you wanted, you could come hang out with me for a while. Until we get busy. It's warm," he tried to tempt, figuring Tobias would not mind getting out of the brisk winter air.
"We're only going to be open for a few hours today to test things out," he gestured for Tobias to go around back and use the steps to climb up into the truck with him. "But afterwards, you'll come over, right?"
It was an invitation, but it was a request; Evan did still seem nervous, but Tobias was his rock--and he wanted something to look forward to in case today didn't go as well as he was hoping.

“Well fine, fine.” Tobias grinned and shoved the money right into the tip jar anyway, and finally moved to the stairs and entered the truck, grinning happily. “Of course I’ll come over. I’d say that I’d take you to dinner for a real celebration…but I know how you feel about other people’s cooking…so maybe I’ll just have to cook you something instead.”
He winked and plopped down in one of the seats in the front of the truck, eagerly awaiting his food and happy to be able to share today with Evan, no matter what came of it.
Though…Tobias knew that it would be a good day, even if Evan didn’t manage to win everyone over with his food…they were together…and he had his truck…so there was nothing that could go wrong from here on out.
