Zachary stood in the waiting room of Destiny City General Hospital in his work clothes, button-down shirt undone and washed in a smear of dark across his stomach. He shuffled on the balls of his feet just outside the receptionist's desk, every so often glancing down at his phone in search of a text. Without family connections, he was pretty sure that he couldn't just ask for Vanessa Rae's room number, but after carting her up a flight of stairs with her innards threatening to become her outards, he felt fairly obligated in making sure that his friend from high school had made it through okay. Dan had been kind enough to accept a twenty dollar bribe to cover the rest of Zachary's shift, so he'd been standing there for about thirty minutes, trying to think of the best way to explain to the nurse at the front desk that he really should be the exception to the rule.
Hey so I just watched a literal goddess become a girl I used to know in high school and I think she's staying here. Help a dude out?
Her blood's on my shirt, so that's kind of like being a blood relative. No. No, that's creepy as ********, don't say that.
...What if I gave you twenty dollars and covered your Wednesday shift?
He didn't think Dan tactics would work on the nurse. If she worked at DCGH, she'd probably seen some s**t.
