It was all the rage. They were everywhere and in every store. In the hands of children and adults alike. It was impossible to escape them.

Fidget spinners.

One particular store was selling out of their unique spinners faster than others. They were a beautiful metallic rainbow color and had a good weight to them. They felt just right in the hands and could spin easily. The shopkeep was also known for giving free ones out when you bought some, ensuring you had plenty for friends and family members.

They didn't know that the more they spun the spinners, the more their energy was being sucked away and stored for the negaverse.

The shopkeep, a slight old man with glasses, just smirked to himself as he sat in the closed store that night, admiring how much beautiful energy he was collecting for his masters. He would surely be promoted for this.

What is that annoying sound? What a nuisance!

The cat couldn't help but notice with his large, feline ears the whirling noise that seemed to come from every other human he passed on the streets of Destiny City. It was those darn spinners again. They were supposed to help over-anxious, attention-lacking civilians, but there was absolutely no research to back that up and the Mauvian had checked. They were an absolute, useless menace, if you asked him.

Then Tama sensed something. Something menacing. And it wasn't just his opinion on those foolish toys. It was a real, dark, Negaverse-like menace and it was eminating from one shop in particular.

Tama sighed as a beaming child left the store - spinning gadget in hand - and he used the opportunity to slip his grey body through the door and into the suspicious shop. Something was distinctly not right here.

The shopkeep happily handed over several spinners to a group of school children, who left with their pretty toys, all clamoring loudly how they glimmered rainbow colors in different light, like an oil slick on dark pavement. The old man was about to close for the night, and saw his customers out, shambling like a regular old man.

Something seemed off, however, and he hummed to himself, going to lock the door and turn the sign to say 'closed'. "It seems that I have a guest." He turned, looking around his shop through his thick glasses that made his eyes seem huge. "Who's there?"

Perhaps he had not been as discreet as he had thought.

Tama's padded footsteps were light but not silent enough to avoid the detection of the shopkeeper. It was a pity really. He had preferred to surveil the area first and come back later with a better plan. Clearly, he couldn't do that now. The metaphorical cat was out of the bag.

"I should probably be asking that question of you seeing as your kind is just as out of place here as mine."

The old man pushed his glasses up his nose, "A talking cat? What is this world coming to....pesky little hairball." His voice deepened and his posture seemed to change, back straightening and standing taller. "How dare you come into my shop uninvited."

"I am afraid I cannot allow you to continue to drain energy from these civilians."

As annoying as he might find them, those constantly in motion, caffeinated kids didn't deserve to be a toy of the Negaverse. No one did.

"You are the one who is not invited here."

closing for word count

Tama fought the creature. Was it a youma? It must be. What else could it be? Tama wondered how many forms a youma could take. Usually it was some monster of some sort. Or an animal that didn’t look quite right. They could even be humanoid. But one selling toys to children? That was new. Tama supposed that draining children could be a good idea. Well, maybe not good, but decent enough. Kids were high energy at times. Perhaps that made up for the small size? It could be efficient that way, he would give it that. The cat wasn’t entirely sure how draining worked. He wasn’t an agent. Perhaps he would question one about this at some point. And youma? How did they work? They could take too many forms to be natural. Very inefficient in design. But flexible, he would give them that. Perhaps it had to do with Metallia? Certainly, he’d never get to ask her. Either way, fighting this particular youma was really hard. It was standard by youma standards (if you could say they had standards). This one fell easily to his own cat form. Why did Mauvians only have one form? It must be because the cat form was superior, surely.
