It had taken more effort than she would have liked to get here, though now that she had finally made it to the right office, she couldn’t just leave without relaying her information. This was her duty.

…If Cinnabar were still around, she would have wanted her to tell them. She wouldn’t have wanted to become a traitor. Cavansite knew that in her heart but…at the same time…

She wasn’t really sure.

The General drew in a deep breath and held it for a few moments, something she had gotten in the habit of doing lately, and something she wasn’t really proud of. It made her feel weak. Unbalanced. Though…she supposed she had been off balance ever since the whole meet up with Tanais.

It wasn’t something she could really be blamed for.

Slowly she moved to the open doorway and knocked lightly on the frame. “General King Axinite. I am General Cavansite and I would like a word with you if that is all right. I am in the Special Operations division under General Queen Hessonite, but even though this is information regarding a traitor…I’m not sure it’s been recorded in the database yet. If it has, I haven’t been able to find any information, sir.”

Lord, now she was rambling to a General King. Her palms had begun to sweat and she was feeling more nervous than she cared to admit. What if he reprimanded her for not just filling in the database herself? Why hadn’t she done that first?

“I understand that this isn’t protocol but, it was an agent who was well respected and…” She sighed and shook her head. “General Cinnabar has purified.”

Axinite was standing in the room when Cavansite first appeared; he seemed to have been pacing, one arm crossed over his chest and cupping the elbow of his other hand and he held his chin. His lips were pursed, as if in thought, and he turned to face her as soon as she made her appearance.

It seemed like he might have been intending to pull an all-nighter, but he already looked like he was suffering from a lack of sleep.

A grim shadow crossed his face with the news.

Dully, he responded, “Is that so.”

It wasn’t a question. It was just a string of words he’d put together to fill the silence while he processed the information. His face seemed to remain impassive, except for the very slight clenching of his jaw just before he turned away from her and gestured for her to join him at his desk.

He sat down and pulled over a blank sheet of paper as he armed himself with a pen to record what information he could. “I appreciate you coming to me first.” His eyes lifted from the paper to find hers for only a second before he returned his attention to the paper. “You are absolutely certain of this? Do you know what happened?”

Cavansite sighed. “Unfortunately no, sir. She claims that she doesn’t remember why she did it. Yelled that at me, honestly. Told me what I knew of her before was dead and she would rather die than ever be brought back to us. I offered, of course. I had hoped…it was just some mistake. Some moment of weakness…”

The General had to pause and draw in a breath to collect herself. The thoughts were coming out too quickly, she was growing more emotional than organized and as she sat down in the chair across from Axinite, she let the air out slowly.

“She claims that her ‘home’ is now a river on Mars. Her name is Tanais. Well, the name that she took when she abandoned us is Tanais. She’s no longer a half youma…but I suppose that was obvious…sir…”

Cavansite hesitated. “I didn’t realize that they could…do that to half youma. I thought that youma…were immune to their magic like that I didn’t…when did this happen?” She couldn’t just keep asking questions like this. Though she had never actually spoken to a General Soverign like this but…she had a pretty good standing with Hessonite, at least she thought so…but…

But this was a completely different situation and Cavansite felt very out of her element…as well as a deep feeling of guilt. Perhaps she shouldn’t have gone and done this. Perhaps she had made the wrong choice…but…

Cinnabar would have expected this. She knew that. She had to believe that or she would end up in more trouble than she could imagine.

There was no room in the Negaverse for Traitors.

The signs of agitation and frustration were discreet, but not impossible to locate. Axinite held the hand so tightly that his knuckles were white, and when he wrote, he dug the pen into the paper hard enough to leave a very firm indent. He moved quickly and fluidly. Every gesture was deliberate; he made no mistakes.

He wrote down everything Cavansite said and didn’t speak again until he’d finished.

“I wasn’t aware they could either,” he said quietly.

There was bitterness in his voice; he didn’t like not knowing something. He took his job very seriously, but even the information he had on Bazzite was limited. He released a slow breath and raised his eyes to hers. “Another officer purified not so long ago. He’d been youmafied. Laurelite was given reports on the matter, but information was limited. I thought, perhaps, it was a fluke.”

He didn’t mention that there had been two reports—only the one about the agent.

“This isn’t information that should be spread irresponsibly, Cavansite. I’m sure you understand the repercussions we’d be facing if word got out that they had such a weapon and we hadn’t figured out a way to stop them, yet. We don’t have all the information, yet. Did she say anything else about it, about the process? About how it happened?”

The General watched Axinite writing the report…or at least writing down the bulk of what she was saying. He looked stressed…but then…this was a stressful matter. If he hadn’t known it was possible to purify those who where half youma…perhaps this report of hers would mean more attention to herself…and perhaps some more power thrown her way…Cinnabar was gone now…so perhaps…

Perhaps Cavansite could rise to such a level herself.

The thoughts were more sane than those she had been having recently…and honestly they helped to push away the guilt she still felt for reporting this in the first place…though if she hadn’t and it got out that she had known…well.
That would have just been trouble for her, and trouble was something that Cavansite was not interested in.

“I understand, sir. I won’t spread rumors. You can count on me.”

It was quite interesting to know that someone else had been purified after being a youma, and for a moment, her mind flashed back to the little cook who had been turned into a youma…that had been such as fascinating thing to watch, and idly she wondered if he was still the scrawny black fur ball that he had been the last time she had seen him.

…She hoped so.

Pulling herself back to the meeting, the General shook her head, seeming annoyed. “No, sir. She didn’t seem to remember anything about when she was with us, and she wasn’t very forthcoming with information…what would you like me to do? Should I pursue her? Work to get her back with us? Bring her starseed back to be examined?”

She was going a little too far with her suggestions and Cavansite had to suppress a shudder at the thought of hurting Cinnabar. It wasn’t a thought she had ever even entertained so to be saying this so casually…

“Would you like me to at least alert those in the special ops group? We are the ones who normally deal with the traitors, and I can let General Queen Hessonite know if you would like, sir. I don’t mind. If this didn’t happen that long ago, perhaps she could still be persuaded to return. I did attempt…but…she grew rather hostile, and I will admit, I wasn’t at my best…Cinnabar was…close to me. I was quite blindsided.”

If Cavansite revealed any discomfort at the thought of dealing with Cinnabar, Axinite was oblivious to it. His eyes remained fixated on the paper as he scrawled rapidly. For a moment, he seemed to be considering her request.

“No,” he finally said. “I will speak to General Queen Hessonite. She can be brash, I don’t want her to take it out on you. She means well, but.” His voice trailed off for a moment and then he shrugged. “Cinnabar was a good agent. This situation is upsetting. But, Hessonite will know best how she wants to share this information, if we decide to do so. It would be better if fewer people know, at least until we have found a way to stop this treachery.”

He sighed and lowered his pen, reaching to pinch the bridge of his nose with his free hand.

“Forgive me, Cavansite. You deserve more attention than I seem fit to give at present. I can only say that I am grateful for this information, and I will summon you when we have made a decision on the matter. Should we find a way to resolve this situation, I will contact you. But, please,” he seemed sincere, “The hysteria this news could cause far outweighs any good that could come of it. For the time being, I will let you defer to your own judgment on matters related to Cinnabar, or whatever she is calling herself presently. When this changes, you will now. For now, any information you can provide will assist us in making an educated decision on the matter, but I won’t pressure you to pursue her if you think it puts your life in danger. The last thing I want to do is lose another talented and irreplaceable General.”

Cavansite nodded, feeling slightly relieved at the reprieve given. Hessonite was a little brash, and if Axinite wanted to be the one to report to her, so be it.

“My lips are sealed then, Axinite. I won’t go spreading this. I…” She wanted to reassure him that it didn’t matter if he didn’t have the time, that she was intruding, but his final words stopped her, and a small grin began to spread across her face.

Irreplaceable. Well, if that wasn’t high praise she didn’t know what was.

“Thank you, sir. If I run into her, I will try to get whatever other information I can. Thank you for your time today, and I am glad…well. Not at the circumstances, but I’m glad that you could spare even a few minutes to meet with me. If I learn anything more, I will deliver you the information. Have a good day, General King.”

Giving a bow, Cavansite turned to go, feeling only the slightest bit of guilt now. She had given her report, she had done what Cinnibar would have wanted her to do.

And now the information was in the hands of the higher-ups. And all she could do was try to figure out…how this had come to be.

And why.
