Time kept moving and no matter how one fought against it there was nothing that could be done. This was abundantly clear by the countless college applications, brochures, packets, and other accotramot scattered across Dessie’s bed and room in general. At 18 she was looking at ‘going to college’ right in the face and was faltering. Just four years before she had honestly feared she wouldn't get her GED let alone actually graduate from a high school and now she was being offered college. And she was running out of time to decide…. if she even wanted to go at all.
Icy blue eyes surveyed the papers scattered about and drifted towards the darkness beyond her balcony doors. It was cold out. Bitterly cold. But it held an appeal that her warm room did not at that moment. She wanted to just fade into the night, to run away from the decision put in front of her, but she would not put her family through that again. Never again. But she couldn't stay here, not right now, she needed to get out of there, if only for a few hours.
A little less than a hour later the young woman turned towards her companion and nearly snickered, “oh grow up Ian. You needed to get out of the basement before you turn whiter than your outfit.” With a smirk she slipped out of her car and quickly dashed into the shadows of a run down building, moments later Antares strolled out of the crumbling structure shrugging her coat back on. She liked the power being a Super Senshi gave her but the still rather skimpy outfit left a hell of a lot to desire on freezing cold nights like these; hence her black sweatpants and black jacket. In her additional clothes she could almost be mistaken for a negaverser if the glint of her tiara didn't sparkle on her forehead.
“Are you coming? Or do I have to drag you along by the ear again?” One hand cocked on her hip the young woman raised a brow at the older male. He needed watching and she needed to get out and do something so he got roped into coming along. “Let's go! It's not getting any warmer you know!”

Whiter than his outfit, really? “That’s not possible.” And she knew it, and he knew it, but still she had said it and he had to point out how impossible it was. He still was surprised Dessie had come down to his room, and without knocking walked right in, she really had no manners and no fear of talking to or dealing with him. Since they’d become something of a family, her accepting him as an entity which lived in the same home as her, she didn’t try and avoid him and she wasn’t so hostile...it was interesting between them.
Watching her off to power up Ian remained seated in her car, reluctant to leave the warmth the car offered. It was nice in here, why did he need to get out? He had a coat, yeah, but still it was cold and he wasn't much of a fan really. Watching as she returned to the car he had the door cracked open a bit, just enough to let some air in, and listened to her as he raised a dark brow at her.
Those words...they weren’t just a threat - they were a promise. She would drag him from her car and force him to power up, somehow. Shaking his head he climbed out and took a short walk away, so he could power up under the cover of some shadows. Returning to her side the glowing sections of his uniform caused him to stand out, right up until he pulled on his own nice long puffy coat. His tiara though still stood out, just as hers did though his glowed unlike hers. His wings though...they were all pushed into his coat and took some adjusting to make comfortable.
“I don’t know why you wanted to come out tonight...it’s freezing. The weather is calling for snow.”

“Because I needed to get out and you needed some exercise. You were starting to grow moss! If your so cold let's get moving, slowpoke.” With that last jab she took off into the city streets, quickly transitioning to the rooftops. Her explanation wasn’t quite truthful. She did need to get out of the house but she couldn’t very well tell the older senshi at her side that she was at least mentally running away from the future. That she didn’t want to decide on a college, or a career, or anything for that matter. How could she explain to him that she was a kid from the streets and didn’t deserve such an opportunity. Four years wasn’t a long time if one thought about it. Not when it was compared to the first 14 years of her life, a life filled with pain, hunger, anger, fear, and depressing poverty. Yes the last few years she never really went hungry. She no longer feared a hand raised in anger, not consciously at least. Her pocket always had money, even if she disliked spending it. And the only pain she felt was pain she accidently caused like when she stepped into fights, or while patrolling, or doing something stupid while practicing. Her life before and after the Jacobs was like night and day. Now she was facing a choice she never would have thought she would be facing. There was a dark part of her that whispered in the dead of the night that she never thought she would live this long, let alone be facing something like this.
Rather then face this she distracted herself by hunting for evil. Stalking the night like some Halloween costume reject looking for bad guys to beat the s**t out of. Sadly Chaldene was right… it didn’t take long before snow started to fall, gently accumulating and covering the grime of the city flake by flake. As the minutes turned to a hour and more the night got colder and colder, not even her sweats could keep her from shivering. There wasn’t even anyone out to fight. Not negaversers, not youma, not even regular junkies or robbers. It was as if the whole city was freaking hibernating! If she wasn’t so freaking cold she would scream. Sadly if she tried to right then she feared that her teeth would chatter so hard she would bite her tongue. And yet she still didn’t want to go back. Not yet.
With a stuttered curse Antares fished out her senshi phone, grabbed Chaldene’s wrist, and did something she rarely did. She hit the button to send them to her planet, she transported them both to Antares. To Nbwniwt, the capital city, the city of gold and splendor. The city of sun and sand, of warmth and perpetual summer. The change was drastic and nearly instantaneous. One moment they were in the freezing cold darkness of Destiny city the next they were standing under the harsh golden sun on a far, far distant planet. The light blinded Antares for a few moments, just enough time for her stomach to settle from flipping back and forth. Space travel always gave her the feeling of just stepping off a elevator that had been flying only to come to a sudden stop. A strange and unwelcome feeling, one that quickly faded away in the overwhelming heat that beat down on her and radiated up from the ground.
“Come on, we gotta get out of the sunlight and these clothes before you get heat stroke… or burn.” Antares was no longer awed by the grand courtyard the duo had arrived in. The towering sandstone pillars and the building they guarded held no further interest to her beyond the shadows that beckoned from underneath them. Her heels echoed across the stone as she dragged her companion along behind her, uncaring about the shear splendor all around.

As minutes turned to an hour and an hour grew longer and time moved on, far too slowly if you asked him, Chaldene got bored. There was nothing going on and it was snowing and his hair was wet from melted flakes, some drips dropping into his eyes. Winter wasn’t all that bad...but he didn’t need this. This was too cold and he was shivering even though he wore a coat over his uniform - it wasn’t enough. It was too cold.
Ready to turn on the blond and order them both home, this was insane, he felt her grabbing his wrist and noted her phone coming out. Before he could question what she was doing he saw the button she hit and he braced himself. Landing was never easy for him, it always sent his poor stomach for a loop, it wasn’t any different this time though he did immediately go for removing his coat holding it instead of wearing it - too hot. “A little warning next time.” His voice almost pleading. He did not like the sudden change in environment, especially when it was so damn different.
Where as she wasn’t staring around he sort of was. It wasn’t that he was too surprised, given her uniform, but it was still a sight to see. Even if the idea of being on another planet no longer phased him, he’d been a senshi for years, each planet was still amazing in its own way. “Tell me there is a place to rest...nice and cool - dark.” Or at least less 8-bright than it was outside. Letting her drag him behind he was hoping for a cave like place here...and a way to keep cool. The idea of sunburning was less than pleasing, it would be hard to explain to anyone back in Destiny City, as they tended to hurt a lot and that was before all the peeling skin. Nope, he did want to avoid that...heck he kinda wanted to avoid a lot of things right now.

The temperature dropped drastically as soon as the duo entered the shadows of the building. Rather than leading Chaldene to to main doorway she had pulled him towards a much smaller doorway off to the side of their arrival point, a servants door or some such entrance. It wasn’t anywhere near as grand as the main entrance; smaller, fewer decorations on and around it, almost lost to the sheer size of the columns around them, but it did give them access to the darker and cooler part of the palace complex. Once inside she dropped his wrist so she could strip off her own winter gear; her sweatshirt left on the sandstone floor, the pants quickly following leaving Antares in her much skimper uniform. A perfect outfit for the hot desert environment that was her homeworld. She was bordering on comfortable once her sweats had been ditched but it didn’t take much imagination to guess that Chaldene wasn’t anywhere near as happy about the weather difference, even without his winter jacket on. So when he asked for someplace cool and dark she wasn’t surprised but that request was a lot harder to fill out then he would expect. In a land of sun and sand finding a area void of light was not easy, not in the daylight at least.
But there was one place…. it wasn't dark by any means but it was cool.
“Go ahead and leave what you want here. I think I know a spot that will work.” With a half smile she turned away from her companion and wandered over to the simple stone wall. It might have been simple but the blocks that made up the tall structure were huge. It was shocking to think about this whole building being built one stone at a time, let alone the whole palace complex. Her worries about her own future seemed childish when compared to the time she knew it had to have taken to build, to the sheer magnificence of it. But still… she just couldn’t shake her concerns. Antares ran her fingers down the stone, tracing the seams, and opened her mouth to say something but closed it again almost immediately when Chaldene told her to lead on. Keeping her thoughts to herself, she did so silently, leading the older senshi through the vaulted halls, passing into the sun only once to cross a small courtyard only to pause in front of a pair of carved wooden doors.
With a smile that was full of glee the young woman dramatically threw open the doors to reveal a temple flooded with a rainbow of colors. Stained glass let the bright light flood the sandstone building with a myriad of colors, bathing the few remaining carved wooden benches in so many shades it was hard to figure out what was carved and what was shadow. The sound of trickling water could be heard from the deeper shadows against the walls, cool air bringing goosebumps to her arms. “It’s not dark but I think it will do, what do you think?”

As the temperature dropped the older of the two let a pleased sound, he really wasn’t a fan of the heat...at least not that much heat. Warmth was fine but heat like that and the bright sun - no thanks. Left in his own senshi uniform he really felt it was too much - it was too much covering and too confining. “Next time I’m bringing clothing appropriate for this place.” So he could change into it, so he didn’t have to strip down as he went about doing now. His top was the first thing to come off and it was quickly followed by his boots. He would have taken his pants off as well but he had a feeling the blond might just beat him for that. “This place is still very warm.” But it wasn’t as bad now that they were in the shadows - was this was Egypt and such places were like? He hoped not...though the shade was a nice reprieve from the sun and its heat. So he supposed that wasn’t too bad.
“I’ll take my top with me just in case…” He might need it, though in this place he wasn’t so sure. If she said it was cool, or dark, he might though...and he was going to practice some caution as he didn’t know the environment here like the blond did. So with his top slung over his arm he followed at her side, toying with his lip piercings the whole time.
Having remained silent during the walk, closing his eyes against the sun they passed through, he was surprised by what he found when she threw open a set of doors. For some reason he was picturing something more...Egyption alter like maybe? Some sort of ritual like room but this - this was nice. The colors from the stained glass were especially nice but even more of a surprise to see. In a place like this the stained glass seemed very out of place and was thus unexpected but it was welcome...just as much as the darkness was. His own top found itself being pulled back on as he stepped into the room.
“It’s perfect...though aren’t you cold now?” He questioned the other.

Out of the entire palace complex this was her favorite spot. It was the only spot she had spent any significant time in during the handful of trips she had made to her home planet. Something about this place called to her, it helped ease the worry tightening into a rock hard ball at the base of her stomach. The first time she had walked into the building it was dusty and aged, half the benches were broken, and the water fountains hidden in the shadows were dry. Antares knew that it was all wrong. It was as if a part of her soul cried out at the wear of this one place, the rest of the buildings not so much but this one made her unreasonably sad. Several full trips were all it took to get this special space the way it was now, Antares was just disappointed that she couldn’t salvage any more of the benches but there wasn’t anything she could do about that.
Even as Chaldene took in the high windows spilling color into the spacious room the younger senshi was drifting into the shadows along the walls. The great carved pillars that held up the high roof and the myriad of windows also blocked some of the light from reaching the alcoves that were interspersed among the hieroglyphs and murals. Some alcoves just had a single mural or mosaic, others had random patterns filling the space, but the ones she liked the most were the few that had a water feature. The one she had gravitated towards was a alcove of a random mosaic pattern in shades of blue with a waterfall burbling over polished stone and glass. It always calmed her and that's what she needed right then.
“No, I’m fine.” The blonde absently answered Chaldene’s question as she trailed her fingers in the water, absently picking up foggy blue stone and worrying it between her fingers. After a few moments of silence she suddenly spoke quietly, “Chaldene…No, Ian,” Antares deliberately called her companion by his civilian name, “When did you know what you wanted to be in life? How did you decide?” That was the crux of her problem. Who was she? Who did she want to be? The world was all but open to her and Antares… no, Dessie… had no idea who she was.

“I still don’t know for certain.” Glancing up from where he was laying down across a bench, he really hoped it would hold his weight. “I’ve been taking classes that interest me, letting that lead me a bit more than anything. If I find an area I really like I’ll keep at it.” It wasn’t perhaps the best advice, or information, to give but he was being honest. He didn’t have a plan really, he’d never had one when it came to college.
“I knew where I’d go, I wanted to keep local, I have borrowed friends previous text books, to flip through, so I can get an idea on subjects I’ve not taken. Some are ok and others...not so much.” Shrugging, not that the blond could see it, he huffed out a sigh. “Why? Are you having college issues?”
Shifting to roll onto his stomach, getting comfortable with his head pillowed on his crossed arms. “That’s why you can go for general liberal arts. It allows, I think, for a wider range of topics you can pick from. So you can try more things. After that if you find something you like more than anything else - go for it.”

“No that's not it. Xander wants me to go but I just,” Antares muttered as her fingers fiddled with the stone, her voice trailing off uncertainty. Her thoughts all turned inward, she wasn’t even really aware that Chaldene was there with her. “It’s not about classes or majors or schools its…” She just let the sentence fade away as her mind spun, trying to figure out just why this whole situation was freaking her out so much. Then it hit like a bolt of lightening, the core of her troubled heart. “I never thought I would get this chance. It was never an option before,” Before coming to Destiny City, before meeting the Jacobs, before becoming Antares, before finding a family… four years. It had only been four years and while her whole life changed there was still a part of her that was that runaway who was from a dark shadow of a home where ‘savings’ was a can of coins hidden in the freezer. “What if…” I’m not good enough. She couldn’t even vocalize such a thought.
Boohoo. Poor little orphan girl. A real cinderella story and now with the world at your feet you cry. A snarky voice prodded her. Goading her into wanting to lash out. The tears that had been building burned away in the anger that flashed through her. She was an adult damn it. What did she care what others thought about her. Just because she was some nobody who had the keys to the kingdom handed to her didn’t mean squat s**t. She just had to suck it up like an adult so that's what she tried to do. With a shake of her head and a muttered curse Antares strode out of her little alcove, the stone forgotten in her clenched fist. “It doesn’t matter. I’ll figure it out, don’t worry about it. We should get out of here before too much time pass. Lets go.” She didn’t even look at Chaldene, her gaze just skipped right past him like she wasn’t seeing what was around her anymore she was so focused. Focused on avoiding the real issue. Focused on powering through the pain and the uncertainty. Focused on being the strong woman she had always been. Focused on smothering the rolling emotions that boiled through her. “I’ve got to get my stuff then we can go. Don’t want to freeze my a** off when we get back.”

Listening to the younger, hearing her hesitate and trail off only to start again, he couldn’t imagine the issue she was having talking about this topic. It was obvious though that it was an issue for her to discuss this topic. It was slowly that he spoke up, thinking over his own words. “Yeah, but you have this chance. They won’t care if you take things slow….do what is best for you - that’s what matters to them. They care about you too damn much to want you worrying over it like this. It’s school...don’t make it a big thing. Take classes you want...enjoy it. If you enjoy it you’ll do well...plus it’s best to enjoy it rather than slave over it and hate it - right?”
Sighing he stood up, knowing he wasn’t likely to make any headway with her as she was now, maybe he should talk to Xander later or Lily maybe? Which was the better option…? Pondering over this as he approached the blond he went to ruffle her blond hair, in the hopes of easing her emotions. “Look, college isn’t something you want to stress over. It’s like a job...you don’t want to get locked into something you’re going to hate. Enjoy it the most you can. So long as you enjoy it and do your best that’s all that’ll matter to Xander and Lily...Rose also.” He didn’t know Rose as much as the other two, for whatever reason he hadn’t had much interactions with her.
“They want you happy….and so do I. Maybe spend some time, before you sign up, going over various course books to get an idea on the subjects offered. The colleges website will list classes and information on them each also.” He was hoping he was guessing the issue right and helping, he really wanted to help her if he could. Following at her side as she headed back to where she’d left her stuff he had his own things to get as well, he did not need to freeze to death when they got back home to Destiny City.
“Next time..my homeworld. It’s not so hot.”

She might not look like she was listening but she heard what Chaldene was saying. Could she really just go with the flow? Take classes that interested her without regards to the cost? The thought of school, the thought of the cost and how she fit in to society just didn’t seem to mesh. Logically she knew that she had every right to go to college, that Xander didn’t care what she did as long as it made her happy, but in the darkest parts of her mind there still resided the poisonous whispers that disagreed with everything ‘logical’. Still saying nothing the young blond ducked the incoming hand and started to leave the temple.
“At least you aren't cold anymore,” Antares smirked at her companion just as they stepped back out into the blazing sun before ducking back into the shadows of the palace. Chaldene’s homeworld was an intriguing thought and easily provided a distraction, one she still needed. The trip to her homeworld did nothing to ease her own thoughts and thoughts on his homeworld did nothing to fix her problems but at least she didn’t feel the nearly overwhelming urge to run far far away right then. Maybe dragging Ian along with her that night had turned out to be a good thing after all. “Let's get out of here. Hopefully the car will be right where we left it.” It hadn’t been stolen yet… or towed but one always ran that risk when patrolling late at night. She would deal with college eventually. Maybe.
