So far, Skeiðbrimir’s attendance on patrols had given an overall security of mind: two was better than one in a sudden fight. Knight nor senshi had tested their joint mettle at a full combat. He didn’t know if that was pleasing. Nights went faster, as clockwork as ever in gathering his own choice of energy, answering calls from this or that lieutenant for their turn ins, and ostensibly scanning for auras to make converts of. It was supposedly something Generals should be doing.

In thinking over the point, another General’s aura came close enough to sense to where Titanlåvenite stood beside a grey SUV at a gas pump. The starseed in his hand whisked to safekeeping in an inner pocket, “Here to!”

The youma heeded the command and lumbered out of the shower of gore behind the register where it had manually been digging its own starseed food out of the station attendant. It stood and dripped and sniffed at the air. Does it smell or feel auras? Either. Another General could be dangerous, like Obsidian. Or could pass on without further notice or contact. Better to be ready.

General Tourmaline was a curious sort, by nature. She wanted to learn so that she could continue to grow, finding the mantle of General a key to open doors that would help her expand her knowledge as opposed to an end of the line sign that she knew all. She was not the strongest, not the fastest, not the wisest. She simply was and that left her determined to be better.

The night's venture into wisdom and understanding came in the form of wandering the city in search of something. She knew not what until her arrival topside was greeted with the sensation of two auras nearby-- General and... Youma, was it? Not entirely like Wasgo or Pet, but not different enough to make her think otherwise.

Tourmaline made no effort to hide herself or mask her approach by teleporting closer to the aura's point of origin. Her approach was neither too quick nor too slow, the idle pace giving the other General a chance to depart if they were truly in no mood for confrontation or communication. She hoped that they wouldn't leave, however, and she was not disappointed that the aura remained still even as she came closer.

"Good evening, friend. Hope I"m not interrupting anything too important."

Trim like neon roses, trussed, or “pinked” as it were, with burgundy. Or was the red of ruffles? The glimmer of gauntlets and rivets on straps in the light, with the shifting of weight natural to a walk, was unmistakable. The other General must like the color enough to adopt it to her hair, which was off to the side opposite a half-cape. It was a strange uniform. The bearer seemed like they might be equally as strange, leading off with a familiarity in ‘friend’ that had opposite effect to putting Titan at ease. It made him think of oiled smiles and cajoling. There are metals shining and different colors there. On her breast. Like Moonstone. It is possible she has more quality than madness. I do not know her colors. I do not know her face. Her weapon may be in Elsewhere still?

“No, General, “ He called the smaller officer by rank with an ease of respect towards it. “No interruption. It is good to meet others under the Queen’s Banner. I do not know your name; Your medals accuse me. “

Skeiðbrimir huffed a breath, gore pluming out like steam and ren mist, out between its teeth. Why was the hammerone tense?

For his part, Titan’s hammer came to hand, then heavy let the roaring metal heads of it to the concrete with a clang. He let it go then, to rest and be unthreatening beside. “ I am Titanlåvenite, from GenOps. This is Skeiðbrimir. What did you need?“

"I am Tourmaline." Her eyes remained focused on her fellow General as she bowed, extending her arm to sweep her cape out behind her in an added flourish. An old voice in her head piped up making certain she remembered to never lower her eyes to anyone. Always be aware. Always be on edge. Such paranoia had been imposed when it came to trusting others-- other officers, potential comrades-- she wanted nothing of it. Tourmaline might not have gone out that evening to make friends, but she refused to treat others on their side as enemies.

As she righted herself she rocked on her heels, bringing a hand up to tap lightly at her medals. "I should replace this tournament one-- most don't choose to proudly display that they've lost. This one, though..." A silver-claw capping the tip of her gauntlet'd finger tapped against the silver star dangling at the end of the striped purple ribbons. "This is a reminder to be stronger.... And to keep learning in order to better defend the heart of what's ours."

She felt as though she spoke too much of herself, hands falling back down to her sides, gaze drifting from the giant to his massive companion. "Skeiðbrimir? Is that a name you've given this magnificent creature? Or is that a name your companion provided you? I must admit, I am very curious when it comes to the nature of bonds shared between youma and officers... I've not claimed my own yet. How did you decide upon each other?"

’Ours’ The word was simply used, but felt simply wrong. He couldn’t think of a word to describe how it was wrong, only that “Metallia’s” was correct substitute. But that was usual with the rank and file. They were the soldiers that fought, so they thought it any part of their ownership, like voting and the citizenship of the USA.

The question about his companion was unexpected, given that Youma had been referenced and treated as weapons or test subjects by most other officers. Also, youma were not so much like medals. It was a deflection, but why escaped him completely. Titan was himself a weapon, and not a sharp one, so what did that make the bearthing that was his companion?

“It is an old name, but Skeiðbrimir does not have words. That mouth and teeth could not make them. It snorts when it runs, like that horse. The fifth that serve the Æsir. The name matched, and it answers to it. I visit the Rift daily, offering training to any that wish to come. The Youma come for a starseed. Sometimes I walk the roads. This one found me there, in the dark. I said to come. It came. It follows the name. It was not so complicated a thing. I do not think it is the usual way. I did not come by it until late...you are unusual like that, yourself. You are late, like we were. Most choose to find their Youma as captain?“

"I am late, yes." Tourmaline nodded in a simple agreement. There were a number of things that she was behind on, she was certain, directing her focus inward on fixing her own flaws before seeking out a monster partner. If she wasn't strong enough she risked it latching on to insecurities and taking control, whispering in her ear until she gave in. She knew herself, knew how easy it would be to give in to that tempting offer of raw power.

"I was too impulsive as a Captain-- reckless. I would not have made a good match for a youma. I've heard that they only answer to strong officers. That makes sense, of course. The youma bonded to officers that I've met have all been fine, magnificent creatures, loyal to a fault. The Rift, though? You say you visit it daily?" It seemed common enough for those who had taken youma companions to do so, she wasn't certain why that fact surprised her.

"What drew you to the Rift, if you do not mind me asking?"

Reckless? Not a good match? His memory was thrown back the strange crab thing that General Buddingtonite had as companion, and looked as well to the bearthing at his own side. Quirked, he looked back to this Tourmaline, “ I do not think that I understand. “

“This one is not so complicated. I have known others that were very simple. There was a crab and it served by making itself armor- this is very good for reckless officer? Unless you are looking very much for a youma that isn’t feral? “ There was that prejudice in some of the ranks that called feral youma undeserving, less impressive, or generally befitting only the poorly capable officers for command. Perhaps Tourmaline shared the opinion, and was being polite. She was welcome to it.

“It is the Throne, there.” He answered simply at first. “Across the bridge and into the lower level of the Citadel. That is the throne room. The symbols are on the walls, and around the city, even if the throne that General Sovereign Tanzanite kept is no more than dust and rocks now. It was the Throne of Earth. Have you been to see it?“

Tourmaline did not know how to explain her concerns-- her fears-- to the giant of a man who stood before her. How could she explain that she had seen what recklessness brought about when one sought a youma too soon? When one was not able to impose their will over that of a beast and the beast overcame them instead? She had no prejudice that one type of youma would serve better than the next, she simply had no desire to count herself amongst the half-youma officers of the Negaverse and did not yet trust herself to not fall prey to the ever tempting offer of more.

"There are many unique youma and each officer who finds one to call their companion seems to benefit well from their bond. I could not tell you what I was looking for as I have not yet found it, but when I do...." She smiled, letting the conversation shift to other things, tales she had not heard before.

"General Sovereign Tanzanite was before my time, although I understand she was a force to be reckoned with. I have not been there to see it, but I take it that you have?" Her demeanor changed from that of a grinning mischief-maker to one of someone who was often filled with an almost child-like curiosity. She wanted to know and experience all that she could to the fullest. If there were things, other than youma and the swirl of chaos and nightmares, that might make the Rift more worth exploring she wanted to know.

"Would you tell me more of it?"

Smiles and trailed off , no preambles, no helpful liner notes or movie subtexts for life. Non-answer of that sort read painfully deliberate. It was off putting, smacking of condescension poor-cloaked by affability. So why, with the smile? Questions of experience, or of generalities of history, were available to better searches from the Information Branch. Fishing for something, weapons of some sort and to some purpose that was just as veiled and astringent-flavoured. I have not lied to her...No. Each word was mean genuine. Uncertain, but genuine. I have no name, no fame, to mark me a target? A jealous kind, and everyone is a target? Maybe it is just guard and not aggression? Then why? Giving very few answers, but she asked many questions at each pass between us. It is like a battle, almost. Smiles meant to cut. It does not seem like guard, but like swords turned off shields, if any of my words had been swords.

“Nothing I could tell you is different. You are more decorated than I. “ He turned to gather his hammer from where it had been left, “You command in the Rift as well as any our rank. Better than I can. I am a weapon, without rune or gold..a poor one. You will want someone like Benitoite, or the information branch. Questions wanting good memory and good answers. “

His weapon vanished to the elsewhere space of waiting, before he pulled up to mounted posture on the bearthing. It was best to go. He would not make enemies with the better hands that served Laurelite. “Good hunt, General Tourmaline. I am happy for your name, and to meet you. “
