Skeiðbrimir bristled the spines along its legs, then muzzle and head, follow by a shaking from snout to tail that held firm only where its General’s weight kept the corrupt meat and fur pinned down. To ride was to be just south its shoulders while it lumbered at pace and leap along the pavement. Titan noted the bear-thing glanced often at reflections that chased them—parked cars were their own midnight mirrors. To Metallia maybe we are like two circus bears in a fun-house.

Every circus had stages, had this city, and they were expected to perform. With no direct lieutenants or captains of his own, he was free as a General to roam and take quota deliveries of energy balls and starseeds at need, ferry officers, freely hunt enemies and protect other officers who were about the city. Learning Skeiðbrimir’s foibles outside of the Cathedral or the Rift was proving a necessity of that, as they had slowed to a walk, then a stop, in front of a particularly reflective, darkened display window of a restaurant in the core of downtown. The youma grunted at it, and shuffled it’s paws. Titan climbed down from the great back and ruffled the pile of the shoulder fur and spikes, “Do you like, or dislike your reflection? Or mine? “

“Or is it unexpected?”

Skeiðbrimir made a drawn out moaning noise and drooled some on the sidewalk while still eyeing their faces that overlapped chairs upside-down on tables. To the General, it sounded like unease and unfamiliarity. There was something like words in the feral thing’s voice, but not to any language he was familiar with. It was as likely some virtue of their growing bond and “because magic” as any other reason for any part of their ability to understand one another. Or mutual experience: There weren’t many mirrors, or much glass. There was the crystal, but it glowed. Glowing light within isn’t reflecting what’s outside it. And Stone. Stone on stone and poison unwater. I did not see reflections down in the Rift where we met. That might be too much like a self down there.

The brilliant bonfire of an aura woke and drew both their eyes away from the glass and out to the roads and turnings beyond. There was a labyrinth of blocks to guess at between them, but the aura was hale and heartful as his own, oppositional, near enough to overlap and feel each other and a star. Eternal Senshi, but will it run, vanish, or come nearer?

“We walk. Keep an eye up, they like rooves.”

The youma clicked its teeth together, and tongue against them, and fell into an easy pace beside him to start closing the distance.

How long had it been since he had simply wandered the streets?

It felt like another world now, returning after so long. Aegir's anger and betrayal, the agony of loss, the persistent heartbeat of sadness that pulsed beneath Thrymr's chest, unable to be fully subdued. He was simultaneously an outsider and an insider; trapped in a continual push and pull of the feelings he could not and did not know how to sort out.

His time on his homeworld was supposed to have fixed all of that, but perhaps it had made it worse.

The flare of a power signature nearby, strong and sure, made him slow his steps. There was a small amount of snow still caught on the sidewalks and rooftops, though it had been a while since anything had fallen, Thrymr's boots making soft clicking noises as he made his way down the road. There were a great many streets and buildings to navigate through, but it wasn't that hard to guess at the direction of the aura; it grew stronger as he made a turn left, down a side street that housed small, crafty type shops, and then slightly dimmer when he made another left. Thrymr turned, redirected, and went right, and it grew even stronger.

It was, perhaps, unwise to go towards the center of strength, rather than away from it, but Thrymr was not going to shy away things anymore. He paced down another street, turned, and found himself on the same road as a youma.

Or rather, a youma, and a man. A general, by the strength of the signature, but a familiar one, enormously built and taking up much of the walkway, and, it seemed to Thrymr, much of the universe, not just because of sheer size, but overall presence.

He slowed his steps, Thrymr coming to a stop a short distance away.

"Titanlåvenite," he said, with just a small hesitancy. It had been a long time; he wasn't sure he had the name right, or if he was imagining things, but it was hard to forget such a person, in spite of all the years that had since passed from their first meeting. "It...is Titanlåvenite, isn't it..?"

Lights, it had been aurora lights. It was the one that had brought water during captivity now two years passed. Had he worn the diamond-backed skin that long already? The little one that has said ‘wait here’ in his nervousness to someone who was bound in ropes. “The little noble, Southern Lights. Of the Jotnar. Þrymr, but you say it a little differently. ”

Titanlåvenite had not seen the Northern Lights at Lofoten in years. Björn had not been to Sweden or to Norway in years. “It is Titanlåvenite, but you can still use Titan as before. It is not Captain, now.”

The Senshi could no doubt feel that on his own, but it was worth keeping the conversation going. He paused when the senshi did, pat-patting the neck of the Youma and it too stopped. Drool started dripping out of its mouth, puddling, while it looked at the small senshi. “It has been a long time in this war. It is good to see you are still alive. ”

The youma was given a curious look, albeit a slightly wary one. Thrymr was not familiar with the creatures of the Negaverse, not as much as he would have liked to be; but last he'd seen of Titanlåvenite had been gentle and calm, rather than imposing.

Well. Still a little imposing. He was a massively built man, after all, and the power signature alone indicated he'd risen in rank last Thrymr had seen him. Still, a tentative smile was given, something warm settling in his stomach at the greeting.

"Yes, I....I see that you've grown a little," he said, daring to come a little closer now, arms at his sides, posture relaxed, for the most part, though Thrymr carried himself differently than he had before, more drawn in, more closed off. "I am also glad to see that you are still alive, that you have become even more than you were."

He glanced at the youma again. "And you've a companion with you. I hope you're...faring well..?"

A slight hesitation. Thrymr felt irrationally a little anxious, possibly because he'd been away for so long and didn't know much things had changed since the last time he had been on Earth.

“Happiness and horror do not live in the same house, “ The words came out deep, distracted in a way as though they chased no longer memories, but the shadows of memories. To be well must mean to feel safe, happy, content, and settled? There were moments of undoubted euphoria, but that seemed different. The miasma of threat, duty, need, and thirst was pervasive. “This is Skeiðbrimir. It is doing well, and likes our jaunts in the city. “

“Are you doing well, Little Noble? To be alive and to be well are very different. And you still have no companion next to you, like I saw you last. Maybe no one else would have fit in that cell, though. The street is much kinder with space, ja?“

Titanlåvenite's voice was deep. Thrymr felt the press of the words against his throat as though it was a physical thing, and something inside of his chest seemed to clench. There is no happiness in that house anymore, only horror.

He pushed that thought away, attention flickering once more to the youma. The corners of his lips twitched. "A good companion, then," he said, though it was admittedly not one he'd want himself. He was content with Pasha and her gentleness, and her kindness; the way she kept him grounded.

Titanlåvenite's question brought him back to the moment at hand. Thrymr's face was paler than usual, perhaps a trick of the light, perhaps a symptom of unwellness. "That is true," he said. "Wellness is a thing of...privilege sometimes, I think. I haven't yet had the luxury since I've returned to Earth."

His mouth curved in a wry smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "No companion," Thrymr agreed. "I think that's probably a good thing right now. But I do prefer Earth to space. Space was a little..."

The memories of his homeworld shivered through him, and he gave an involuntary shudder, Thrymr's eyes flickering, slightly distant.

"It was not what I had expected."

‘Returned to Earth’ was pretty plain in meaning, but where he’d been that wasn’t Earth wasn’t immediately grasped. ‘Space’ could have been a sky-full of places. It was everything not Earth the way a man’s whole world became a ship to the open sea. It cold be to his own or some others homeworld. Or where knights went. Maybe there were other places, too. “I went to a senshi world long ago. ‘They are all ruined, ‘ I have heard said. It is glad it was not deadly to you. What did you hope for?”

Zinkenite had known Pomona, had advised him on talking with Avior. That one had gone with the Prince Remarque, rather than to the Sovereigns. It had been a long time since he’d spoken with any of the the three of them. Zinkenite had been clear in his impressions of the senshi worlds, though.

Thrymr blinked up at the large man in front of him (though admittedly, "large" felt rather insubstantial in comparison to Titanlåvenite's considerable bulk). "Did you?" he asked curiously, head tilted a little to the side. A bit of moonlight caught at the unnaturally sharp edges of his cheekbones, too visible under pale skin, more so than they once had been before.

Always before.

A small, faint smile tugged at his lips. "They are mostly ruined, so that does not surprise me. What did I hope for...?"

He had wondered about that himself, even as he had found himself stepping down onto the unfamiliar territory, immersing himself in a land and a place he scarcely knew, save for the scant visions he had been given about his past self. Thrymr's shoulders had been a little tense, but now they eased, too far, as though his body had given up on holding them up.

"Hope, perhaps," he said. "Hoping for hope. Or maybe for something to tell me what to do. Some sign."

Thrymr's smile didn't quite meet his eyes as he looked at Titanlåvenite. "I was hoping for a home, in some respects, but that place is not a place meant for living."

“Hope and fear are hard to find and hard to escape. “

Looking for signs, for guidance, was a wish the General could related to intimately. Little Thrymr had the learning and advantages of caste on his side, but youth… did not nobles look to their kings and queens, too? Or to their churches, gods, and fates in the face of war, starvation and sickness? They did not always choose right. Friends and advisers would not be found on dead places in space, though, and they were the most real, tangible forms of guidance to be found anymore. Where are Odin’s Halls, or his dreams? Where is God, with starseeds and Metallia and alien worlds where people used to be. Were they human? Were they like the starcats? What did they believe. They all died out there and nothing answered.

“Do you believe in gods, Little Noble? Why is hope alone in space?”

Thrymr's lips curved, but the smile didn't quite meet his eyes.

"They are," he said, and the agreeable note to his voice wasn't entirely casual, either. There was an edge of something in it, almost a painful note, Thrymr's eyes going momentarily a little distant, thoughts trailing from one thing to another. The memories were beginning to blur together, lines not quite as strong anymore.

For some reason, the Little Noble drew him back to himself; and there was a sting of something in Thrymr's eyes that he blinked away rapidly. He wasn't sure why the question felt like something stuck in his throat.

"I used to, maybe," he said softly. "I'd like to still believe. But my beliefs are...very hard to understand anymore. And hope is..."

His voice trailed off. Thrymr swallowed hard.

"Sometimes alone is what's necessary, after all."

“Sometimes it is. Sometimes that’s when we drown.” The general considered the shadows that crept up the legs and hid along the sides of the senshi where streetlamps couldn’t reach. It was easy for the black to sneak up and drown out color. Sometimes it didn’t even have to sneak. “—The gods like fairy-tales. I liked the Norse ones better. I do not think for believing. No matches to what we live. Nothing like starseeds, or stars in the sky with palaces and many nobles. Nothing like the christian god, either. No angels or prayers. “

“You do not look like you found hope being alone. Even if it was necessary. You’ll need some color soon. People and living voices, and the hope of company. Company not all black, like me. As much as I, or any of the throne, can offer you the black again and again. You know to be careful? That we do not have to ask?”

Thrymr knew too well what that was like. How it felt to be submerged entirely with no way of getting to the surface. How sometimes he clawed at the water around him in an attempt to breathe only to be pushed back into the waves again.

There were no gods here or prayers answered. Only himself.

Thrymr's gaze flickered over to Titanlåvenite, and there was a faint smile on his face that held no humor within it. "No, I didn't. Hope still eludes me, whereas loneliness..."

He trailed off, gaze slightly far off for a moment before it returned. The look he gave the general was something soft, in spite of the hollows underneath his eyes, because Titanlåvenite was different. Titanlåvenite had a heart that expanded farther than his own in all directions, and Thrymr did not fear him as he should have.

"I will be careful," he said. "Company is hard to find these days, but...I think some color, as you said, would do me some good, if only I could find it."

The smile quirked, just a little. "But I do like the company of the all black of yourself, for the record."

“We are all lucky—finding is easy as walking towards what feels like you, Little Noble. At least there are not so many who wear all black. And not my size.” It should keep him safer from the worst of the Throne. And safer from notions that he’d be less lonely in the Negaverse. He couldn’t think of a memory where any group of senshi, knights, officers or otherwise had functioned as a cohesive, close knit unit. And he’d certainly not seen any instances of joshing around and smiling, but that was expected for either being out to harvest or battle.

“Maybe then your own colors can reach your eyes. You wear many, but you do not reflect them anymore. Maybe you visited the black between the stars, instead of your star, little noble. “ Skeiðbrimir lowed, and drooled copiously onto the pave. The youma pawed once, lightly, wondering when food would be found if this particular senshi was going to be designated Not Food tonight.

“Dawn chases shadows soon, but it will reflect you better...rose and orange and white. If you wander the streets much more. We should return to the deeper dark.”

He liked the gentle Little Noble, because somehow it felt...familiar. Warm, though he struggled to recall what that even felt like anymore. Everything inside of him was an ashen wasteland of things he had once thought he knew and wanted and loved, and now...

"Maybe," said Thrymr, but the distinction between the black and your star caught him off guard. He had not yet considered it in that way; it made his mind work a little to try and figure out whether or not this was true, the hazy memories of his past life and his current twining together in a painful knot.

"You are very kind to me," he said softly, Thrymr's gaze lifting to the general's. "I wish there were more of you that had your heart. More of us, as well," because it wasn't just the Negaverse. Order had plenty of people within it who were not kind nor forgiving.

Thrymr let out a small sigh. "But you are right. I should get back before it becomes light."

The corners of his lips quirked, just the faintest hint of a smile. "Even if it does bring my colors."

No, there should definitely be less that have my heart. Less that do what I do, whatever side of all this. And none my stupid head. It was Titan’s turn for his mouth to go wry. Still, he gave a slow nod of respect to the little one. “Rest well, when sleep takes you. And with a glass of water. “

With that, the general lifted his hand to pat the youma-bear-thing, leave his hand there on it’s shoulder as a guide and leash of sort, and turned to walk back into the anonymity of the city.
