It was time for the first baking class that she and December would be attending, and Kelly was…actually pretty nervous. She had debated for the past few hours, ever since getting home from school of what she would wear, and finally decided on just a pair of jeans. Her…only pair of jeans and a nice top. Of course, she had bought a terribly ruffled apron too, and she had that folded neatly in her bag. She had picked on up for December as well, but she didn’t know if he would want to wear it or if he had his own…but it was a really cute one, leftover from Christmas with a big reindeer face on it, complete with light up nose…and it had made Kelly laugh and think of her new friend so she had bought it as well.

When she arrived at the craft store she went right to the back classroom, feeling butterflies in her stomach. What if he wasn’t here? What if class was cancelled?

…What if she caught the whole store on fire.

For a moment, she thought about just turning around and leaving, but instead, the girl went into the classroom and took a seat, swallowing hard and trying to rid herself of the uncomfortable butterflies.

It never used to be this hard to go out and do things…there was no reason for it to be this hard now.

It was time for the first baking class that December and his new friend Kelly had signed up for, and of course he was running late! He over slept and the bus came late, and THEN he left his bag on the bus so he had to chase down the the bus to the next stop and hope that his bag was still there! Once that was all done, he had to run down to the craft store and apologize a billion times for running into too many people. And THEN when he finally got to to the store, he knocked over a shelf of stuffed animals and had to spend some time cleaning all that up!

Already, he was distressed, though he tried not to show it. After all, he was here to see Kelly and he knew she needed to see smiles! He wasn't about to show her his frown!

"I'm here!" December bounced right into the classroom the moment everything was cleaned and announced himself with cheer. While he was definitely one who sat smack dab right up front, as close to the teacher as possible, he spotted his new friend sitting in in the back row and immediately went to her side.

"I'm glad you made it on time! Are you ready? I'm ready, I am SO ready!" His arms went around Kelly and hugged her close, finding himself surprisingly touched deprived and hugging her just a bit tighter. There were hardly any friendly hugs where he lived. When he finally pulled away, he held the girl's hand for a moment, squeezing it and giving her a grin.

"I really shoulda texted you before I got here but I was runnin' late. I'm always runnin' late, but not late enough to be too late! I've missed you! I hope you've been well!"

When December finally entered the classroom, Kelly felt an overwhelming wave of relief, and when he hugged her, she returned it, squeezing him with everything she had. She was even a little sad when he pulled away, though him taking her hand made her smile again. “I was getting really worried about you…I got you something!” Her voice was soft and she hesitated for a moment before finally dropping his hand to pull the apron out of her bag.

“It was on sale, but I don’t know, it was so cute and it reminded me of you.” She handed the obnoxiously red apron to her friend and seemed hopeful. If he didn’t like it…well…that was okay.

After a moment, she slipped her hand back into his and sighed. “The nose lights up, and I think that’s what really made me think of you, because you’re such a bright and nice person. So…yeah! And I got myself one too, but…” She drew hers out with her free hand and slipped the top loop over her head. “It’s not as cute. It’s cute, but not as cute as yours is. Mine’s just ruffles a lot of ruffles, but what else would you expect from me, right?”

She squeezed his hand again, and almost wanted to steal another hug from him. It felt so nice to be held by someone who wasn’t family and honestly seemed to like her.

"Awww you were worried about me? I'm so sorry about that! Things happen, I forget things, then knock things over, but I'm here! OOH presents!" December couldn't remember the last time he got a gift that wasn't just stuff for school. His siblings weren't exactly generous in their gift giving, so maybe this gift caused his heart to just explode in happiness. Or he was just naturally that way.

The moment he saw it, had it in his hands, he laughed in joy, squeezing it tight to him and putting it right on without hesitation, flicking the nose right on. To his delight, it lit up and he near jumped in joy at it.

"This is amazing!! Ahh! You know me so well already!" Immediately content with his gift, his arms came around Kelly again, squeezing her tight and holding her at arms length right after, admiring her own frilly apron. "Nawwww, don't say that! Yours is adorable and it's perfect! It suits you so well!"

A small 'shuush' came from the front of the classroom, and December tried to see who it was, but they had turned around... He could only sheepishly whisper out a 'sorry!' and then grin back at Kelly. "You are really too sweet to me already... Hehe, I can tell, these cakes are gonna be awesome because of how sweet you are!"

Kelly chuckled, relishing the second hug and flushing a little when they were shushed by someone in the front of the classroom. So yeah, maybe they were being a little loud…but did that really matter? They hadn’t even started yet. She reached down and caught December’s hand in hers, squeezing it tightly and whispering. “No, you’re really wrong about that, it’s going to be awesome because of how sweet you are. You’re the nicest person in the whole world, December. I’m so glad you came to talk to me.”

She fell quiet as instructions started, and she jotted notes down with her free hand but kept her other one wrapped around December’s, squeezing it every few minutes.

Finally when they were done learning how to make the cake, and onto the more practical use of actually trying to do it, she looked at the white haired boy and gave a little grin. “You ready for this? I feel like they started us with a super complicated one…I’m not going to lie, all of the cakes I’ve made before this have come from a box. They’ve all turned out great…but they’ve all been from a box.”

Kelly reached out and picked up the measuring cup and the scale and sighed. “Thank goodness we’re doing it together though.”

"Aww...." It was too late to say much else as the class started soon after she spoke, so December decided to hold his tongue for now. And Kelly's hand of course! Though with her hand in his, taking notes was a little harder. Not that it mattered much anyway. He was horrible at taking notes, and by the end, he ended up doodling cake after cake after cake rather than listening. Every squeeze Kelly gave to his hand, he squeezed right on back, turning to give her a smile and a little playful nudge, shoulder to shoulder.

When the teacher finally announced they could finally bake he nearly jumped out of his seat with joy, letting go of Kelly's hand in favor of grabbing all the flour he could and dumping it straight into a bowl, sending a big poof of loose flour all over his self and a bit of the floor behind him.

...Oops, that wasn't part of the instructions, was it?

"I am so, so ready for this! Though.. Hehe, I don't take the best notes... Did you write everything down? I'm here to help but, uh.. Yeah!"

Kelly’s smile didn’t leave her face once during the instructions, and when the December decided to skip the whole measuring part and suddenly had a face full of flour, it was all she could do not to burst into laughter, but the two of them were already getting some looks…but for once she didn’t care.

“How about we go and follow the notes I took before—“ She broke off, biting her lip, face starting to turn a bit red as she continued to swallow her laughter. “Before we just…pour things in…December you look like a ghost and I’m sorry. I’m trying not to laugh but…”

She drew up her apron and raising one of the ruffled edges began wiping the flour from the boy’s face.

“Maybe…you could read the instructions and I could do the thing? And then you could do the decorating at the end? I bet you’ll make the cake super pretty…you just seem like you have a really artsy soul…and I admire that about you, December. I think you’re great.”

Grabbing a new, clean bowl, Kelly began measuring all of the ingredients, a few chuckles escaping despite her best efforts to stop them.

…This was really fun.

"You're right! Let's do it your way!" December didn't mind at all that Kelly decided to take charge. Honestly, he liked it better that way. He was never really good at, well, anything so someone taking the lead, taking his hand, felt much more natural to him.

As she cleaned his face, he gently leaned into her touch, giving her a sweet smile and nodding slightly, even if he didn't quite register what she said. Oh well, something about decorating a cake, he thought. And reading. Proudly, he could do that!

Once she pulled away, and once he was done dusting himself off, he went to pick up the instructions she wrote, admiring just how neat and lovely her handwriting was. Just like herself!

"Alright.. Eggs, butter, flour, all that! Ahhh! I just know this is going to taste amazing! And I can make frosting, no sweat! Don't even need a recipe for that! Where's the sugar? We're going to need ALL the sugar! OOH and we should make it all a pretty fluffy purple color. What do you think?"

Kelly finally let out a laugh, shaking her head. “We’ll make the frosting when the cake is in the oven, Dessy.” Her mind had conjured up an image of her friend making the icing…though this time his face was covered in powdered sugar instead of flour and just thinking of it made her laugh again.

“But I like the idea of making it purple! We should focus on one thing at a time, so…” She began quickly following all of the instructions she had written down, breaking the eggs and measuring the flour, and after a little while, she was pleased at the color and consistency of the cake batter. “All right…I think that maybe…this will do it! Now we just have to let it bake and while we do that…we can talk decorations! I was…I was thinking…”

Lifting one of the pans, she nodded at the other, hoping that December would help her walk over to the large oven that they were to use. “I was thinking purple frosting for the cover…and maybe some blue frosting flowers? With some silver…sparkle dust or whatever? I think that would be super pretty, Dessy…and then we can eat it. And that…that’s what I’m looking forward to the most, I think.”

"Aww, okay. Until then!" December was far too focused on just the very idea of cake, rather than making it so he had already gotten the cream and sugar in his hands to make up probably way too much frosting than they needed. But he was gonna try to behave this time and listen for once in his life, so he put everything down and just waited patiently.

He didn't want to be just watching, so he tried to help Kelly neatly handing her things she needed, preheating the oven, and trying to generally stay out of the way. Every so often he looked down at his feet, making sure his shoes were tied and that he wasn't about to trip on something. By the time the cake was ready to go in the oven, he near flew out of his seat, going to make sure that he took a pan and opened the oven door first for her.

"Purple frosting, blue frosting flowers.... Oh, and maybe white frosting lace all around~ And lots and lots of sparkles!" Once the cakes were in, he closed the door and set the timer, before half skipping back to the bowls. Before they could start on the frosting he needed to clean up a little, not that he minded.

"Mmm... Yes, the cake eating part is the best! But it's even better that I'm gonna be eating it with you, Kelly!"

December wasn’t a bad helper, not by any means. He tried his best and Kelly could see that, but perhaps…he just tried to hard sometimes. Which was understandable. Sometimes trying hard was the only thing a person could do…and Kelly appreciated it.

She grinned at her friend and nodded excitedly. “Yeah! White lace sounds awesome…we’ll have to figure out how to do it, but it sounds like a really beautiful cake to me!”

Opening her notebook, Kelly got the ingredients together for the frosting and plopped them all in front of December. “Your turn! Now I get to be the helper, and you get to make the mess.” She winked and looped an arm around him in a half hug, laughing. “Just be sure not to pour all of the powdered sugar in at once, or else we’ll all die from inhaling it, and I don’t know, I’m too happy to want to die right now…which…”

She shrugged and pulled away, grabbing the food colors that she wanted to use. “…Which is guess is a bigger deal than I realized, and it’s your fault, December.”

"Awesome awesome!" The moment the stuff was placed infront of it, he got to work! After hugging Kelly back, of course, transferring some of his floury self to her own apron.

Yes, his movements were erratic at times, and he plopped things into the bowl with a big ol' poof each time, but he DID put more effort into it than he thought possible. He did what the instructions said, keeping things level and not spilling much unless he just got too excited chatting away with Kelly. Each time he did he went 'oops!' and cleaned it up quickly with a few paper towels the instructor gave them after the first dozen spills.

"I'm really glad you don't want to die then! And if that's my fault you wanna live, then I'm happy to hear it. The part about wanting to live, not being the cause because of sugar dust. Though I guess there's less sweeter ways to go." December tried not to think too deeply about what Kelly had said, not wanting to think that this sweet girl by his side really, truly contemplated death.... Yeah, it was best not to think to hard about it or bad things would happen.

"Alright! It's all nice and fluffy now, let's put the dye in! How do you think they make purple dye purple? Sis used to say they used bugs to do it!"

Kelly didn’t mind the flour, and she didn’t mind the messes that December kept making…and honestly, the frosting was turning out surprisingly good, it tasted good and looked to be the right consistency for frosting so…they had done it!

“Yeah, I’m glad too, Des. I…I was really in a dark place before I met you so…thanks for being my light, really. I wish I could tell you how much you’ve helped…but I hope you can see it for yourself, honestly. Also…bugs? Ew…that’s so gross! I hope your sister was wrong…but we should separate the frosting first! Color each part a different color, right? We don’t want all of it to be purple and we don’t have enough ingredients to make any more!”

She grabbed two other bowls and filled them with part of the frosting and slowly put in a few drops of color into one, staring at the small tube with obvious distaste. “…You know…if this really does have bugs…I’m not so sure that I want to eat this cake anymore, that’s…so gross…” Kelly began mixing though, shuddering slightly as her mind tried to play tricks on her—she swore she saw the leg of something in the frosting but…it was clearly just her imagination.

“Ah! I think the cakes should be done, you finish this and I’ll go grab them!”
Pausing for a moment, Kelly put oven mitts on her hands and went to the oven, sliding the two perfect looking cakes out and almost dancing back to the table, setting them both on the racks to cool.

“We did it! Now they just need to cool and we can dig in!” Her face was flushed with pride and from the heat of the oven…but the success felt so good.

"Aww... Kelly, you're making me blush!" And it was true! His cheeks darkened just a bit. For now he ignored it, tending to the pretty colors of the frosting, wiping up all the colors they'd need.

Once that nice ding went out for the timer, he almost jumped in excitement but DID allow Kelly to get it first, since, well, he had a record of being a mess and making a mess. He really really didn't want to make a mess of all their hard work.

"Ugh.... So much waiting... I just wanna bite it now! Buuuut I'll wait. Maybe I'll give a little sweetness for now!" In thanks for her sweet words earlier, December leaned over and place a tiny kiss on the tip of Kelly's nose before going back to the frosting, taking a clean spoon and taking a big ol mouthful of it, grinning wide once he swallowed.

"Hngggg So much sugar!!! Oh this is going to be the best cake, Kelly! The absolute BEST!"

Kelly was happy that she had put the cake down when her friend kissed her nose. For a moment she wasn’t quite sure what to do about that and it was almost as though her brain had shut down for a moment.

When it started back up, there was a warmth flooding her and in its wake a soft happiness that seemed to spread to the tips of each finger and toe and with a grin, Kelly managed a laugh.

Even if the cake didn’t end up tasting good…today had been a resounding success…and the frosting was good and…it had been fun which was what really mattered. They had both laughed and now they had the chance to taste their rewards. Together.

Quietly Kelly flopped against December and sighed, looking at the cake and the bowls of frosting with a very pleased expression.

“Thanks for doing this with me, Dessy. It was really, really, really fun. And thank you for being my friend. It means the world to me, it really does. You’re just the best person in the world. Honestly.”

With December around. It was hard to think about all of the bad parts of her life. It was hard to miss the people she had lost…and it was easy to just…

Feel better.

And that was nice. It was honestly, really nice.
