Georgette sat down on the playroom floor, puzzle box in his hands. It was a cold day outside again and because of his poor health, he wasn’t allowed out there to play with the others. He lifted the lid off the 1000 piece puzzle and set it to the side then started sorting the pieces, gathering up all the edges to make the outside first. Marking the edges first was important, so that you could build inward bit by bit. He started putting it together, brow furrowed in concentration. Puzzles were somewhat fun for him, but he’d deliberately chosen a harder one than usual this time. (Wc: 106)

Kean wanted to go outside so badly! However, he had accidentally made the teacher mad by working on a doodle rather than paying attention in class, so he had to stay indoors for recess. It would have been so fun to go out and play in the snow! But he had to stay inside! No one else was going to be inside! Except... yes! There was someone who was stuck inside, just like he was! He didn't know the reason that the other was stuck inside though, but hey, better for there to be two people rather than be by yourself, right? He walked over to the other and looked at the puzzle that the other frehsling had started. "You need any help?" He knew that sometimes others liked to put puzzles together by themselves, so Kean couldn't just go in and start trying to put it together!

Georgette looked up, completely startled from his sorting by another voice in the playroom. He gave a smile as he scooted a decently sized pile of the pieces over towards the new nightmare. “Sure! Here are some pieces. I’m starting with the edge and working in. My name’s Georgette. What’s yours?” He picked up a few of the edge pieces and started putting them together. This one went here, that one there... He stared at them in concentration, half listening for a response from the other kid. Add a piece here, flip this one there. He wondered how fast he’d be able to finish with someone else’s help.. (Wc: 108 )

Kean smiled at the other, glad that he was allowed to join in the puzzle. He took the pieces, making sure to move them where he wouldn’t be running into Georgette too much. “I’m Kean! It’s nice to meet you Georgette!” He replied, quickly looking up and then back down at the pieces he currently had. It was a bit hard, and he had to look over at the picture of the puzzle a few times to find where the pieces would go, but eventually he got a few of them together. He then realized that Georgette was in here, though it didn’t seem to be like a punishment like Kean was. “You like puzzles a lot Georgette?” Might as well ask? If the other really liked them, it would explain why they would want to stay in here. After all, it would be hard to do puzzles outside!

Georgette shrugged his shoulders at the question, poking a puzzle piece around before connecting it to one of the edges. “They’re alright I guess. It’s just something to do, really. I can’t go outside in the cold and snow. I’ll get sick, really really sick. So the teachers and my doctor won’t let me go out.” He stated this matter-of-factly, as if he’d had to tell it often enough that it no longer meant something to him, even though it truely did. He picked up another piece and finished the top edge completely. “So they have me stay in here for recess and stuff whenever go out means maybe getting sick. Sometimes I get to meet other kids to play with. Sometimes I’m just here by myself.” He shifted his gaze up briefly to Kean before once again gazing at the puzzle. (Wc: 142)

Kean felt sorry for this kid. He couldn’t even go outside and play! “That’s not fair! I wish you didn’t get sick. And there should be more stuff to play with in here if you have to stay in here!” Well, there might be, but since Kean didn’t stay inside too often, he didn’t know what was there. Kean felt badly for Georgette, and wondered if there was some way to cheer the other freshling up. “Well, at least I’m in here today and I’ll be your friend if you want!” He wasn’t sure if Georgette was looking for friends, but if Kean had to volunteer to stay inside sometimes to make someone else feel better, he would!

“Oh there’s lots of stuff in here to keep me occupied at least. It’s just kind of all over the place. There’s some stuff piled in one of the corners and other stuff on the shelves over by the door.” He waved a hand vaguely in the directions he’d mentioned. There was a fairly large pile in that corner he’d mentioned. Looked like some board games and a few costumes bundled together. “I’m kind of used to being in this room now, and I’m glad I’m not sick. Being sick is the worst. Last time I was sick I had to stay in bed for two months. But I’d be really happy to be friends with you, since you offered.” Georgette grabbed some more pieces to finish working on the edge of the puzzle. (Wc: 134)

Well it seemed that Georgette was content enough to stay in the classroom, though Kean still felt a bit sorry for him. But if the other got sick so easily, he wasn’t sure if having more freshling friends in here at the same time would be the answer since, as he had heard from his sissy and from his parents, that little freshlings like him were quite the ‘germ factories’. But Kean was pleased when Georgette agreed to be hid friend, and it felt like the mood of the room had lifted a bit. “All right! Thanks for agreeing to be my friend! Let’s see if we can finish this puzzle before recess!” If there was one thing that Kean liked to do, it was to do things quickly, but he would slow down if need be. It’s just that there were so many other things that needed to be done!

Georgette nodded enthusiastically, grabbing up some more pieces to finish faster. He quickly finished most of the border off, except for the pieces of it that he’d already given to Kean, so he started sorting through the other pieces to find similar ones to put together. The bigger the matched pieces got, the less time they’d have to spend finding the single pieces and figuring out where they went. “Thanks for wanting to be my friend. So what’s your favorite class? I like science and health!” His tail slowly moved around on the carpet, kind of like a snake as he gets more and more focused on the middle pieces. (Wc: 110)

The puzzle was definitely coming together now! And Kean could finally see the picture that they were trying to create with it! Along with Georgette, he tried to put the pieces in as fast as he could. Recess was probably going to end soon! Kean had to take a moment to think about Georgette's question. He smiled at the other, putting another piece in. "No problem! I like making friends! And I think I like PE and Language Arts. Or at least I like PE so far. I heard it gets harder when you get older. But My sister thinks it takes out a lot of me energy, so I'm happy with it. Right now it's almost like a second recess!"The puzzle was just about to be completed, and Georgette and Kean only had to put the last few pieces in to get it done! It was like they couldn't do it fast enough! Or at least Kean couldn't, but at least he didn't try to force the pieces together. Soon, the puzzle was finished, and Kean held up his hand to Georgette for a high five. "We did it!" And not a moment too soon. The school bell rang just then, and it seemed that their classmates were starting to come back inside. "Well, I'm glad we got the puzzle done! And I'm glad I have a new friend Georgette!"

Georgette grinned at Kean and high five’d him back. “Awesome! This was a great recess for me. I hope we can hang out again soon. It’s more fun doing something with someone else rather than just by myself.” He looked the puzzle over for a minute, then started breaking it down to put back in the box it belonged in. He’d have just enough time to put it away and run back to his classroom. “See you around, Kean!” He waved at his new friend as he put the box back where it belonged and started out the door and down the hall.
