Yes, I know it is totally unimagineable that anyone would wish to part with a book. However, for those out there who have, please tell us what method you prefer to rid yourself of books that you no longer desire to keep. They don't have to be horrible books. It could just be something that you've read, but probably won't read again and would like to use the space for something with repeated reading value.
I've been passing them on to friends lately. I just gave a younger girl friend a collection of romance novellas this weekend. Otherwise I have given books to my relatives for yard sales. In fact, last summer I relieved myself of several titles that way. I would probably donate to the public library, but I've seen the staff there discard donated books to the trash and there are hundreds of books on the shelves back in the workroom that have yet to be put into the system.

I almost never get rid of books because I usually wait to buy a book until I've read it at least once & think I'll read it again.
That said, I do still gather some that I don't keep. I usually take them to the second hand bookstore & trade them in.
If I have a book a friend will like, then I give it to the friend.

I, like Tiamatt, wait to buy the book until I think I'll read it again. The best method to give them away, is to give them to a friend. The books I've gotten rid of have been to young for me, so I give them to my younger cousin.

I never get rid of books.
But I'd say just keep doing what your doing. Give them away to people you know.

I hate parting with books. But there is a time when books I no longer care for or read just end up cluttering my shelf. So what I have decided to do is join http://bookcrossing.com and register my books and leave them in a public place for others to pick up.

Heh heh...I never get rid of my books! ^^; I have a sneaking suspision that my Mom is considering selling my books that I don't read much anymore in secret, but I think that we have clearly established that I will do something drastic, like have a heart attack if she does that. However, I do occasionally give my books away to friends who really like them, and I have a whole slew of them out on loan.

I only remember once giving away any of my books. It was a lot of them, and they were picture books. It was so they could read them to the kids at the church or something? I can't remember anymore. I wish I didn't give them away now.
I love my books/comics/etc. too much to part with them.

Book crossing sounds cool!!! ^____^ I usually just donate books I don't like to the salvation army. I keep all the books I like, I love to reread stuff!

I normally give my books to this used book store near where i live. They give me trade credit in return so that i can buy books that i know i would like to read again or ones that i have never had the chance to read before. It works out very nicely. plus the books they sell there are cheep and in good condition! find one of those and your set for life!

I shudder at the thought of parting with my preciousses. If I did have to choose thought it would be by how much I liked the book and then whether I would ever read it again.

I myself never really got to a point where I would get rid of any books, among other things I'm a huge packrat >.>
although, many of my books were at my father's house and when his basement flooded he moved everything exept my books and let them get ruined mad what few survived he's probually been slowly donating/selling off stare (I haven't been to my father's house in years, we don't get along...)
