Waimarie simply oozed through the foliage, leaving practically no trace that she’d been there a moment before. The dark hyena moved like a ninja without even thinking about it; which was good for her since she was responsible to training the young and new recruits. She enjoyed teaching and passing along her skills of stealth.

The dark hyena was on the tail of her unsuspecting prey now. She’d heard rumors that one of the cheetahs had brought her lion mate back to the pride. Her paws landed soundlessly on the padded carpet of the forest floor. She paused to watch the well-muscled lion. If she was as good at her job as she thought, then he wasn’t aware she was even watching him.

A markedly purple snake also traveled quietly through the forest. Hye-jin felt snakes were the masters of stealth. No extra appendages to worry about rustling or snapping twigs. Her body was low to the ground and traveled quietly. She was also watching a lion, but she was more interested in his familiar. How well did his familiar move? She’d heard the lion had bonded a serval.

Hye-jin flicked her tongue to locate the unfamiliar feline. There were already servals present, so she knew what they smelled like. Now she was looking for one who’s scent she didn’t know. She was also waiting for a signal from her own companion.

Farasi never had to worry about stealth when he was on his own with Mahiri in the rogue lands. His familiar had always been better at it than he. She moved with such grace, whereas he felt as though he bumbled through the greenery they came across in the forest. That said, he was apt as a Dagrun, for fighting was always more his speed. In a pride of ninjas, who would except a charging lion out of no where? He smiled at the thought.

They were patrolling along the inner border, just checking the scents to see if anyone had come by that he didn't already know. He was still learning scents, but he knew enough that he could tell that if the scents did not have the damp-mist smell that accompanied most of the pride, they were probably rogues and it was time to go searching for them.

So absorbed was he in his task that he didn't notice what Mahiri was doing until she cried "gotcha!" and spooked him. He turned around, peering in the dimly lit forest until his nose finally caught a familiar mist-scent. Well, familiar in the way that it had to be another pride member, right?

"Hello? Who might you be?" He asked curiously.

If Mahiri was good at one thing, besides chattering, of course, it was covering an expanse of ground in a timely way. It didn't matter where she was or what obstacles lay in her way. Her lithe form would wind around any manner of object, whether it be a tree trunk or stone and her dainty paws would leap over anything that made too much of a racket. Because her companion was slow and clumsy, she often did wide sweeps of the area around him.

On one of these sweeps, she spotted the snake watching them. The moment she caught its purple gaze, she was springing forward.
"Gotcha!" She cried, pining it with her paws, though keeping her claws in. She held the wiggling thing for a moment and then let it go. "Whatcha watching us for?" She smiled and struck a pose. "Are we that pretty?"

The lion was worst than a cub to follow! Waimarie watched as he simply blundered through the foliage. No. This would not do at all. It was time to take him under her paw. His companion was a little better though. She firmly held back her laugh as they found her own familiar. What might sound like a regular hiss to them, was actually a code for her that Hye-jin had been discovered.

“Terrible! Noisy! Noisy like an elephant!” Waimarie simply oozed out from between some leaves without disturbing anything. She looked down her muzzle at the lion. “I’ll be your trainer from here on out lion.” She wasn’t exactly giving him a choice in the matter.

Hye-jin was impressed that the serval had managed to track or find her. The kit had promise, but in her opinion the lion was hopeless. Which is where Waimarie and her came in. When the serval pounced on her, thankfully with claws retracted or she would have bitten, Hye gave a hiss as she squirmed on the ground.

When she was released she coiled up to regard the small cat. “Not bad for a beginner. Think you can do better? We were following you for quite a ways.” She watched the pair as Waimarie revealed herself. The hyena liked to show off she suspected. Some of it was habit, and some of it was done to impress.

Farasi was certainly impressed when the hyena seemed to materialize out of nothing, but the shade cause by the forest, but the notion of him getting a trainer wasn't exactly the most appealing and looking at the hyena's jaws, which he had heard could snap bone... That wasn't appealing in the slightest.

"You're certainly very good at going unnoticed, Miss." He remarked, trying to act as though he were speaking simply to another feline or to the Eir, Thais. "But training? Do Dagrun need training too? I thought perhaps it were just the Gacheru or..." He strained for the name. "Or the Tenzin, who trained the youth of the pride who needed such skills." Putting two and two together, he looked at the hyena. "I see... I suppose you're one such Tenzin, then?" He inquired, looking more closely at her, without moving a pawstep in her direction.

"Thank you!" She replied when the snake complimented her. "I might be able to, I dunno. I've never been tested before. I'm Mahiri, by the way, what're your names?" She paused to wait for Farasi to introduce himself, but when he didn't she added, "This is Farasi. He's my companion." She smiled.

Waimarie snorted at him. She could read the expression on his face and knew he was less than happy about her order. “That’s my job. I have to be good to train block heads like you into doing the same.” Finally she cracked a grin. “Waimarie if you please. Yes I am. And well done kitten on finding Hye-jin.”

“Everyone needs training. Unless you want them rogues to simply follow you back to the pride. Some day you might have to defend the pride by doing what I just did.” She moved to keep walking, following his patrol, but she still walked quietly. “It’s my job to make sure everyone gets trained.”

Hye-jin had a hissing laugh at the lion’s obvious discomfort. Waimarie didn’t often search out new students, but if she picked you, then you knew you really needed help. “Oh she won’t eat you. Yet.” The snake laughed at her own joke.

“That’s what we’re here for Mahiri. We’ll test you and help you in places that you need help. How did you manage to bond to one who’s so bumbling of foot?” The snake asked curiously. Of course no feet in her opinion was simply better, but one worked with what one had. As Waimarie started to walk, Hye-jin slithered along.

“For you I’d suggest a code or a little something that you can signal to him that you’ve found something of interest he should look at. Instead of yelling gotcha. Everyone in the vicinity heard that you know.”

Farasi flicked his tail irritably, but the hyena did have a point. The snide remarks from her slithering friend were not helping his souring mood, but he would give this Tenzin a chance to prove her worth his time. Maybe if he satisfied her enough, he could return to his Vaiva and complain of the endeavor.

"Fine then. What would you have me do?" He asked the hyena, now whom he knew to be called Waimarie, staring intently at her with a slight challenge in his voice, which could not be prevented.

"A single?" Mahiri echoed. "Like... like what?" She looked to her companion, who wasn't taking this nearly as well as she realized and bapped the side of his leg with one paw. "Farasi, what kind of signal do you want me to do when I've found something? Like, do you want me to jump on him or like, hiss or something?" She turned to Hye-jin, "Would that work?" She asked curiously. "Or... Or I could tap him with my tail or something." She suggested.

She doubted he’d be the last reluctant student. So long as she could improve him a little, then she’d be happy. Slow and careful training would bring a great ninja out of him. They always got mad at first, and she didn’t let his irritation bother her in the least. The hyena glanced at him.

“You might try walking quietly? Don’t worry about anything else. Just don’t let your feet make noise as you walk. Go as slow as you want.” She watched him and kept pace with whatever he set. “Remember we are ninjas. We make no more noise than a shadow,” Waimarie grinned.

The snake slithered beside the serval as Waimarie started lessons right away for the lion. “You’ll want it to be something natural so you don’t give yourself away. Did you know I signal Waimarie when you caught me?” She gave a snake-y grin to Mahiri.

“Do you think it’s wise to jump on something bigger than you, when your lion doesn’t know where you are? It might take him precious time trying to find you. Remember you two are a team. You might work independently too, so how would you tap him? Note, I was away from Waimarie when you caught me.”

She nodded, “a hiss or spat. Some noise you normally make, but you can give it an inflection so he knows what it means.”

Walking slowly? He got the impression that she was teasing him, but he went nodded, determined to walk as slowly as she needed him to. He put exaggerated effort into picking up his paws and placing them where he was certain there were no twigs underfoot.

Behind him, he could hear the snake and Mahiri chattering about a signal or something? He sighed. Maybe he ought to have chosen something different when he joined, for he couldn't help thinking that this training was rather tedious in nature.

"Hissing, hm?" Mahiri replied, slowly and then proceeded to make a variety of different hissing noises. "I can do that! Farasi, wait!" She scampered after him, leaping over twigs and landing lightly on smooth ground. "Do you like this hiss best?" She let out a long hiss. "Or this hiss better?" She hissed, but it sounded like it was a slight exclamation, if anything. She then looked back at her mentors. "Which one sounded better to you guys?" She asked.

The hyena knew her familiar would help his, but she also kept an ear on the pair just in case anything crept up. Not much snuck up on a ninja. When she saw his attention wavering, she patted his hip with her paw. “C’mon boy wake up!”

“Focus on walking quietly and slowly. Try increasing your pace, but any time you hear a noise slow back down.” Practice. He would need lots and lots of practice. Which was why she’d set up her training course. Waimarie walked with him for some time as she continued to give him pointers. After about an hour, she stopped. “Not bad for your first lesson. I have a course set up. I expect to see you there. Come along Hye-jin.” She nodded farewell to the pair then faded back into the foliage.

Hye-jin thought the lion was being silly about the whole thing, but that he was slowly starting to show signs of improvement. If he kept it up she was sure he’d do well. Perhaps she could talk to his mate and see if the cheetah could help put a paw on him.

She turned her attention to the serval. “Much better. It’ll be up to the two of you to work out the fine details. It doesn’t help if you know the signal and he doesn’t. Well done for your first lesson. I suggest perhaps you do something to sooth some ruffled fur. Bye,” she called as the hyena called her off and she followed her partner into the shadows.

By the end of their walking session, Farasi was irritable and tired. Never had he spent so much time looking where he was going. Mahiri seemed to be having fun with it, which only bothered him more, but when he was finally done, nothing seemed better. He watched the hyena and her snake fade into the shadows and then turned to Mahiri.

"C'mon, let's trudge our way back to Vaiva and get something to eat." He told her, before walking, as loudly as he liked as he headed back to the pride, his own pride wounded, to curl around his love.

Mahiri couldn't figure out why Farasi was taking it so hard. She had a perfectly fine time figuring out all about signals and stealth with the purple snake. Still, she followed behind him, her throat a little sore from hissing and walked quietly beside him. It would be good to be home, she thought. Now if only Nasrin could be as quiet as that snake, then everything would be okay, she thought with a giggle.
