The idea crept up on her slowly, tickling Amory's thoughts whenever her wings brushed his back or they reached for the same piece of candy. She thought about touching him, which confused her because she could remember a time when she touched him every day, twining her tail with his, grabbing at his hand before running past the forest's edge and into the dark.
She could never do that now. It would be different somehow.

It happened on a Friday. They were working on math homework, or rather she was working on math and he was staring at the ceiling thinking of anything else. Amory lay on her stomach and Thian on his back, her left wing arced over him like an umbrella. It was one of the rare days where she didn't seem to hate or love the unwieldy things, they just were.
He found himself watching her, lulled into a comfortable state between awake and asleep by the scratch of her pencil.

Her attention shifted, going from precalculus to Thian's face, though she didn't move her head, only her eyes.
"What are you thinking about?"

"Numbers. Fives and threes and eights and s**t." Struck with the notion that she might be in the middle of something important, the demon grinned, pushing himself up on one elbow.
"Nine thousand six hundred and forty two, specifically. Or twelve hundred and eight is a favorite too. Six. One. Zero. Four. Seventeen. Thirte—"

"You're not going to screw me up like that," she said, shaking her head and huffing out a single breath of amusement. "I'm between questions." She closed her textbook on her pencil as if to emphasize this, pushing it and her notes off to the side of the mattress.

"Oh." Thian stopped the moment he knew he was getting nowhere, flopping back onto the bed and looking over at her. He reached out like it was nothing at all, combing her hair back from where it had fallen across her forehead.
"Want to take a break? You hungry?"

"No."
What she was feeling was most definitely not hunger. It was an odd, insistent desire to make something happen. To instigate an event that would grow beyond its humble beginnings until it barely resembled what it had been. To start a ball rolling that would take a monumental effort to stop.
She trailed after Thian's fingers, leaning in as they pulled away from her face, and when she could get no closer, she pressed her lips to his.

There was no time to make a joke, no space to pull away, and though those were his first impulses, ultimately Thian was glad he could accomplish neither. He tensed a little in surprise instead, his hand so close to her cheek that he rested it there by reflex.
Then, he kissed her back.

Eventually, she pulled away just a little, a liquid smirk creeping across her face as she looked down at him. She felt... weird. Flustered, powerful, and buoyant. It was not what she had expected.
"Sorry," she said, still smiling.

All of his life, Thian had felt she was something more than a sappy 'other half'. Amory was him and he was her. Kissing her felt right, like he had become aware of a part of himself that had been close all along, but could only benefit by being closer.
He chuckled as she spoke, the sound breathy and warm.
"Don't be sorry. Just... do it again."
