Jane was still getting used to school. The abundance of fleshlings, students, and teachers didn't bother her. There was plenty of that at the orphanage she had been residing at for so long. It was easy to just ignore the others and do her own thing. Not many understood her rock playmates anyhow. They weren't worth the energy to get to know.
But at school, she had to interact. She had to get to know the others. It was a troubling time for the little one. She didn't want to get along with others. Why couldn't they just leave her alone with her rock collection?
Jane frowned at the girl that she was paired with. "Hi," curt and to the point. She wasn't here to make friends. Her rocks were enough. She wanted to go back into the dirt and search for more. Why wasn't it recess yet?

Lilly’s eyes widened tremendously, mouth gaping open. Had… had the other girl just spoken first? Was that even possible? Lilly practically vibrated in excitement and immediately jumped out of her seat, grabbing the other’s hand. She was lectured not to suddenly grab people, especially if they weren’t her friend yet. But the other had approached her first, had spoken first. They were obviously friends!
”Hi!” she said in a loud whisper, a large grin on her face. ”My name is Lilly! Whatch’ your name?” She couldn’t obtain the excitement from her voice and had even stepped closer. Oh, she had a new friend!

Jane watched the other fleshling warily. Sure, she had interacted with others her age who had a lot of energy but that wasn’t directed all at her. Usually they bypassed her for others that were just as energy driven. She didn’t mind. She only minded when all that energy was directed at her. Like right now. Jane moved back a teensy step, intimidated. The urge to create distance was fierce.
But it was too late.
Her eyes were as large as saucers as her hand was grabbed. Jane couldn’t believe it. She stood there, stunned, mouth wide open. She couldn’t even speak at the dryad’s hello. Instead she looked from the other fleshlings face to her hand and back again. Did that just…happen? It felt…warm.
Instinctively, Jane stepped back as she stepped close. Her personal bubble was already being invaded when her hand was grabbed. But, surprisingly, she didn’t want her to let go. Why was that? Also, what was her name? The elf stared at the other dumbly, face flushed. ”Uh..” her eyes went to her captured hand before back to the girl. ”Jane,” she mumbled, a bit unsure. ”Partner?”

Partners?! Well, she hadn’t been quite listening when the project was described. Or mentioned. So Lilly was completely aware that Jane had said partners as in… class partners. In her mind, Jane had basically asked to be friends.
Sucking in a squeal that was about to emerge, remembering Birkita’s disdain to noises like that, she grinned widely and pulled a bit on Jane’s hand. ”Sure!” she whispered excitedly. ”Sit next to me, alright? C’mon!” she urged, trying to physically encourage her into the desk next to her. Jane was so pretty, Lilly was pretty envious. Admiring the hair, she smiled cheekily. ”I want hair like yours!” she rasped.

Jane's eyes felt like they wanted to pull back into her head as the freshling in front of her sucked in her own...noise. Was that a good thing? A bad thing? The elf could feel her palm growing sweaty suddenly, and it wasn't from the prolonged contact with the other nightmare.
Phew. Relief flooded her body as she agreed? To be her partner. Confusion clouded Jane's vision. Didn't---didn't she know that she didn't choose her as a partner? That it was picked for her by the teacher? Her brows scrunched up but obediently, Jane toddled after her. "Okay." Her small fingers wrapped around the new freshling's own tightly. Did that mean that they had to let go of each other's hand? Jane wasn't sure if she liked that.
The elf's free hand went to her hair as she plopped down on the desk that Jane had pointed to. "You do?" That was a first. Red tinted the freshling's cheeks as she looked at Lilly, unsure. "It's easy. Never cut" She just let it grow. The idea of a stranger with scissors going near her head had never appealed to her. Which was why each time going to get a hair cut was mentioned, she'd always protest. People gave up. She got to keep her ears. It was worth it.

Never cut her hair? Lilly thought about it long and hard. Well, as long and hard as she could on such a subject. ”That’d be easy to do!” she chirped softly, reaching up to touch her own short hair.
Except, in reality, it wasn’t easy to do. Lilly enjoyed change too much, enjoyed newness. A haircut was the ultimate way to achieve newness. And besides, she really liked the feel of cut hair.
”Can I touch your hair?” she asked hopefully before reaching out to stroke a few strands, not waiting for a response. She gaped. ”It’s so soft! Here, you can feel mine too!” she encouraged, pushing off the hood of her onesie.

"Mmmhmm." Jane nodded and smiled at this new person. She seemed---easy to get along with. Not like the others. The elf smiled. She had a feeling that this project was going to be pretty fun to do. Even if it wasn't on a subject that she was too keen on. "It's very easy." It just wasn't easy to comb. That's why she never did it. "I---." She stiffened. Her partner wanted to touch her hair? Well---that didn't seem like such a bad idea. Until the freshling reached over and touched it anyways. Jane got even more rigid. Usually, she'd push anyone who dared touch her way. But this touch----it wasn't bad. Jane frowned. "You can touch." She gingerly moved to feel the other freshling's hair. Her jaw dropped. This was what it felt like to touch someone else's hair? It--it wasn't that bad. "I like yours too." she gave the dryad an uneasy smile. Yeah, this wasn't that bad at all.

Lilly beamed at Jane, happy that her hair was liked. ”Birkita never said she liked my hair. You’re so nice, Jane!” she chirped before pulling out a pencil and paper. She, as usual, was not paying attention to the teacher. There were fun things to do, things better than school work. Like playing with her new friend.
”D’you wanna play tic tac toe?” she asked before immediately making a large hash sign on the paper, not utilizing the room efficiently. ”You can go first!” she told Jane in a whisper while she brought out her markers. She really enjoyed using a different color each time.

Birikita? Who was Birikita? The frown that Jane typically wore grew deeper. Must be a friend of her partner's. That...made sense. She looked around to see if there was anyone who looked like a Birikita in the classroom. she didn't see anyone. A game. Jane looked uneasy at the paper. To be honest, she had never played Tic Tac Toe before. But from watching others, she knew that it had to deal with taking turns and writing either an X or and O. She picked up a marker and nodded, hesitantly adding an O smack dab in the middle.

”Ah!” Lilly gasped, shaking her head. ”Silly, the person who goes first is always X. Haven’t you played tic tac toe before?” she asked before grinning. ”Well, it doesn’t matter! I’ll teach you!” she assured, standing up to show her how to proceed and the fact that they needed to get three in a row while blocking the other person from getting three in a row.
The teacher noticed, however, and barked out that they should be paying attention to the project or that Lilly would have to write. Again. And she hated writing. Sulking, she placed the journal away before trying to peek over at other student’s desks, trying to figure out what she’s supposed to be doing.
”Do you know what project she’s talking about?” she asked. A familiar face walked by the open door, however, and Lilly’s eyes widened. She bolted upright and dashed to the door, ignoring the teacher’s demands. Pausing, she looked back at Jane. ”I’ll talk to you later!” she gasped, waving a hand at her with a large grin.

Jane stared at Lilly, unsure. "Never played before." she admitted, quietly. At least Lilly didn't seem like she hated her for it. The freshling's eyes decided to dart up to see if their new partner's face was disgusted that she'd have to teach her. Relief overcame her when she saw that she was okay with it. Phew. The elf was so intent on learning how to play that she jumped when the teacher caught them both. Right. The project. Jane frowned. She'd rather be talking about tic tac toe. It sounded more fun. "It's a board game project." That's all she really knew about it. Jane couldn't focus after the teacher had assigned partners before going over what the project was about. She had been too nervous about meeting someone new. "There's a----" Wha---why was Lilly leaving?! Jane's eyes went wide and helpless as she whipped around to see where Jane was going. Was she--was she leaving her for another partner? Jane's heart dropped, tears pricking her eyes. Maybe so. She gave a small, hesitant wave over to Lilly, her hand falling soon after. The elf stared at her paper, the other students noises a blur. Her heart hurt. Was this what it felt like to gain a friend and then lose it? She slumped in her seat. It didn't feel good.
