This time of year, snow is common. What’s uncommon is the single, strange snowfall that glistened like tiny diamonds. Everything about the snow seemed normal—it’s cold, wet, and melts just like any other snow, it just also happens to look like tiny little gems are falling from the sky. Depending on who you’re with, it’s either incredibly strange, or incredibly romantic.
The month was wrong, but the weather was right. It was a night like this almost two years ago that she and the Knight Celsus had crossed paths for the first time as powered individuals. He had hardly been in the right frame of mind for a conversation... And she?
She had been searching.
It would be months after that night before Eternal Sailor Corvus realized what she had been searching for that night-- A light in the dark. A kindred soul. A starseed so in distress that it flickered in time with her own, striking a resonance that only someone who had lost all hope could see or here.
It was hard to explain to anyone who had never been in that position before. It was a kind of despair that she had tried to tell Eternal Sailor Arsinoe about; something that she felt she had more in common with the Knight of Cosmos, Mag Mell, than she did with her cousin. It had driven a rift between she and friends that she had held dear, driving a wedge down so deeply that it became a chasm she was now afraid to attempt to bridge again.
Eternal Corvus pressed on, heels digging into the snow. The crunch beneath the soles of her shoes was crisp and wonderful, the silence of the evening majestic in a way that bordered magical. As she approached the playground she could hear him asking, like a ghost softly echoing from the past: Who are you?
Closing her eyes, Eternal Sailor Corvus tilted her head towards the sky. It was snowing again, the flakes drifting down from above, tickling her lashes and frosting her cheeks. Snow always made Destiny City feel so magical, giving it the momentary illusion of Peace on Earth and Goodwill Towards Men. For a brief moment they could all pretend that there was no war. They could pretend that everything was perfect. They could....
A soft breeze rustled the branches nearby and Eternal Sailor Corvus opened her eyes to look up. She watched as the snow flakes danced through the nearby street lamp, stormy blue eyes wide as the crystal of snow glinted, glistened.
It was so magical. It was so wonderful. It was...
It was a shame that she was standing her alone, wishing that she wasn't. Her heart swelled as she heard his voice again, a sad, soft echo of a dream.
What are you doing here, Corvus?
"Watching. Dreaming. Hoping," she said aloud, her voice the only sound save for the snowflakes as they settled atop each other. That had not been the answer that she gave him. Smiling, she reached down to grab a handful of the snow, letting the diamond crystals filter down through gloved fingers. ".... Waiting for you."
She did not regret it now any more than she had then. That night had changed the course of her life just as much as the nights that had followed... The hopes, the dreams, the laughter and support. Each night that had followed had only served to solidify a bond of friendship that had continued to blossom.
Movie nights.
Cookie baking.
Ice skating.
Late nights at the diner.
She was hopeless while filled with hope. Her heart swelled as she threw the handful into the sky, twirling around slowly as the diamond dust showered down around her.
What are you doing here, Corvus?
"Looking for something just like this...."
