Ice and snow? Fine. Hail? Slightly less fine. Large, icicle-like shards of ice falling from the sky? Horrifying. For no apparent reason, Destiny City is plagued with another strange phenomenon, only this one can strike at any time. The icicles plummet from the sky with no warning, regardless of a clear or cloudy sky. The spikes range in size from a few inches up to two feet. Sometimes only one might fall, or sometimes a torrent of them, but they never fall far longer than a minute at a time. So far, injuries and damage have been reported across the city. How are you faring?
The sound of the world crashing outside her window had jarred Mariposa awake somewhere around six in the morning, a time she'd much rather be spending dead to the universe. This was her school break time, honestly, couldn't crazy things wait until then? She forced herself to rise anyway, panic keeping her from falling back to sleep, and slowly shuffled to get her slippers on. Might as well check on what was going on if she was going to be awake...
She nudged her bedroom door open and slipped out into the hallway. It was still dark, but a noticeable amount of light from the living room made her pause. She'd pulled the blinds down last night, hadn't she? That was part of her nightly ritual. Maybe she'd simply forgotten this one time? ... No, that wasn't like her. She operated like clockwork around here! Something wasn't right.
"Oh <********> What happened?" She screamed, hands flying up to her face as she turned the corner. The window was completely shattered and her floor was completely soaking wet! This was horrible!
She scrambled down onto her knees and started gathering the pieces of glass into piles as best she could. God, couldn't she catch a break this year? First the bad fruitcake, then that weird gingerbread incident and the nostalgia, now this! How was she supposed to pay for this? She had so many other bills to pay and repairing a window was extremely expensive! What had caused this break anyway? A rock? A prank?
Another series of crashes outside the window had her gaze shooting up and she made a mad dash for the front door. She threw it open and hopped outside, before quickly recoiling for the safety of the doorway as a huge shard of ice slammed down in front of her. W-where had that come from? Her roof? She craned her head up and soon lost color in her cheeks. Oh God, it was like icicle rain! No wonder her window had been smashed to pieces like that! There had to be millions of people suffering damages out there because of this, maybe even casualties! She slammed the door shut and hurried to grab her cell phone.
"Good lord, fifty people injured?" She gasped, grasping her chest with her free hand. "Thank God I'm not one of those poor people. I can't imagine getting stabbed by a falling icicle..."
She breathed a sigh of relief for a moment, before her attention returned to the gaping hole in her window. Well, she had to find something to cover that with until this freakish weather stopped. Otherwise her entire living room would get soaked and she'd catch a chill. There was no room for her to be sick in the new year, not if she could help it! She stood and rushed off to get changed.
Finding the right equipment to make a temporary fix had proven extremely difficult, but she'd managed to cover it up with what little she had. She'd tried cardboard and duct tape alone at first, then when that proved to be get wet and peel off too quickly, she'd rummaged through the kitchen and found one of her old baking pans. That, combined with a thousand some odd strips of duct tape and prayer, the hole had been patched and she could finally breathe easy.
"Okay! Let's hope that stays put." She said, nodding to herself. She could still hear the sounds of further icicles falling against her roof and the houses of her neighbors, so it would probably be best just to wait it out.
She sighed, wiped her face, and went back into the kitchen. In the meantime, she could fix herself something to eat and look up companies who would be able to help replace her window. Hopefully she'd be able to find someone willing to do it for cheap, but if not, she could always try her hand at doing it herself. After all, how hard could it be to replace a window? She was a crafty girl, she could very well have the knack for it if she tried!
... But, then again, did she really want to risk causing further damage to her house? No. As much as she wanted to try, it would be best to find a professional.
