Ice and snow? Fine. Hail? Slightly less fine. Large, icicle-like shards of ice falling from the sky? Horrifying. For no apparent reason, Destiny City is plagued with another strange phenomenon, only this one can strike at any time. The icicles plummet from the sky with no warning, regardless of a clear or cloudy sky. The spikes range in size from a few inches up to two feet. Sometimes only one might fall, or sometimes a torrent of them, but they never fall far longer than a minute at a time. So far, injuries and damage have been reported across the city. How are you faring?

Nitratine was absolutely sure that when he made it back to Uvarovite's lab he was going to find a way to strangle the Captain. He'd gone out that evening because the weather had said, despite the dangerous shards of ice raining on the city most of the day, they expected the evening to be pleasant for everyone. People could go about their day, enjoy shopping and dinner out, and no worries from strange weather.

It had all passed they'd said.

Nothing to worry about.

Instead Nitratine had already dodged one fall of the shards, dealing with only a few bits stuck in his clothes thanks to the rain this time being smaller, and had seen others falling over the city. Energy orbs were not worth getting impaled over. He had to make it back to one of the portals though and he wasn't as close to one as he wanted to be.

Cornetite's levels of productivity had dropped the moment the temperatures had plummeted. He was more of a warm, cozy fires guy than a doom and gloom guy despite his preference in color palates and the forecast for Destiny City had been anything but preferable for days. Ice and snow as a civilian were one thing, but heading out into the elements in his 'uniform'?

Ha.

Ha ha ha.

Sleeves were a necessary thing for staying warm, as far as he was concerned, and sure, he had almost shoulder-length gloves to compensate for Lieutenant Cornetite's distinct lack of sleeves, but... It wasn't enough. Nothing was enough to send him out into that nonsense, especially when he heard the forecaster say that hail had now been added into the mix. Dangerous hail.

That settled it for him. He had intended to just stay inside, nice and warm, until he'd gotten a message on his crystal communication device.

[General Tourmaline says... How about a friendly competition? Lieutenant Nitratine is already out collecting energy. Collect more than him this evening and you've got the next week off.

He almost ignored it-- would have had it not been for the first part of her 'playful' message.

Lieutenant Nitratine is already out...

That was how he had wound up out in the streets of Destiny City in the cold wind and rain dodging the occasional ice pick in an attempt to track down his friend. "Son of a b***h, just answer already."

[Lieutenant Cornetite says...] N, where are you? Answer pronto.

When another flash hail storm showered down near him Nitratine had ducked under the stone overhang of a shop balcony to catch his breath and get a bit of peace from the weather. The shards seemed to be getting bigger and bigger the longer he was out and he was having a harder time getting out of the way with how unpredictable the random showers were.

For the moment he was safe, it wasn't hailing sideways yet.

While trying to breath for a moment he heard his communicator chime. frowning he pulled the pen out of his pocket before letting the message play. Of course someone would have told Cornetite he was out. Most likely Tourmaline, she'd have talked to Uvarovite. The last thing he needed was Cornetite getting impaled on his behalf.

[Lieutenant Nitratine says...] downtown, outside Bluebird Bakery. Don't come out here it's not safe.

Lieutenant Cornetite had done what he could to make himself familiar with the patrol route his friend kept to. If he knew where he was likely to be he had a rough idea of where he could find him in the event he didn't answer his cell phone or communicator during hours that he normally would have answered one or the other. It meant when he got the return message from his friend he was only a few blocks away from Nitratine's location.

[Lieutenant Cornetite says...] Too late. Stay there.

His primary drive for achieving the next level of service in the Negaverse was the convenience of teleportation. He would have liked to have been able to arrive at Lieutenant Nitratine's side within seconds as opposed to the few minutes it took for him to run the distance between them. Several curses fell from his lips along the way as another gust of wind sent hail spikes driving in his direction.

Ducking under the awning of a nearby bistro, he pulled out his communication device again.

[Lieutenant Cornetite says...] Made it to Lou's. Can you get here safely?

"God damn it..." When Nitratine got the message that Cornetite was already out he spit out a curse and leaned his head back against the wall of the bakery. It was bad enough that he was out here in this mess risking getting hurt. He didn't need Mr. Hero doing it too.

[Lieutenant Nitratine says...] I'm safe. You should have stayed inside it's raining daggers

There was no way Cornetite didn't know that. Nitratine had seen a few more falls of the ice shards from his little pocket of saftey which meant they were still falling all over the place and he still couldn't figure out any sort of pattern to the hail either.

When he got the second message he just barely resisted cursing again, wondering if he did it loud enough Cornetite would hear it. Couldn't he ever do what he was told?

[Lieutenant Nitratine says...] I've made it this far. Just give me a moment.

He tucked his pen away and after taking a deep breath took off back out onto the streets. It was a damn good thing he'd learned how to run in high heels long ago.

Some of the ice shards were large enough to tear at the fabric of the awning-- none of them falling close to where he was, fortunately. He was relatively safe for the time being and all he had to do was wait until Nitratine....

He spotted the flash of movement out of the corner of his eye, seeing just enough royal purple to know it was his friend. He reached out to snag the other man around the waist, drawing his friend under the awning and then back towards the door of the establishment as the ice daggers rained closer.

"You call this safe?" He muttered, voice gruff and barely masking irritation as he kept his hold on the other man, resisting the urge to check him over for any visible damage.

Nitratine almost squeaked, almost, as he was yanked under the awning and against Cornetite's chest. "I was safe. I was under a concrete balcony!" He winced as one of the ice shards shattered next to their feet. <******** this insanity.

"Why are you even out here? You hate the cold." Nitratine was just trying to get back to the Negaspace and there was no reason for his friend to be out running around in this nonsense. "I at least came out before all this bullshit ice started."

"Because Pinky told me she'd give me the next week 'off' if I gathered more energy than you tonight and I just so happened to be watching the weather when her message came through." Lieutenant Cornetite snorted as his arm remained firmly in place around the other man, ready to turn their bodies at a moment's notice to put himself between the ice and his friend if he had to.

He did just that after a moment, more to keep the chill of the frozen rain accompanying the icicles away from his companion than to shield him from the murder weapons falling from the sky, keeping Nitratine pinned for a moment as he fumbled his communicator out of his pocket.

"General Tourmaline, this is Lieutenant Cornetite requesting immediate extraction to the Lab."

---

Tourmaline, ever the vigilant pain in the a**, had been monitoring her Lieutenant's performance from the moment she'd sent out her initial message. She was impressed by his response times, for starters, and equally impressed by his determination when it came to the safety of his fellow team member-- information she stored away for a later date.

She'd been waiting patiently to see what he would do next when it came to escaping the ice shards when she received the notification that he was calling for her to assist. "Well played," she murmured to herself with a grin. Bailing them out was the least she could do after egging them on, of course, and a trip to the Lab meant bringing Uvarovite home in time for dinner.
