Perhaps it was a hang on from the period of her time when she had lived in the UK but Saffron had always liked the post Christmas sales.
She had memories of her parents taking her to the shops, of her mother getting excited over bargains and her father grumbling good-naturedly and sneaking her off to get treats and it was a ritual that hadn't changed after her father got the promotion that had necessitated their move to the States during her fourteenth year - even if these days the treats were more of a coffee and cake at a nice café variety rather than ice cream–
This year however she was going to the sales alone because her parents were still on the cruise that her father had surprised her mother with tickets for and Arian wasn't really that interested in shopping - unless said shopping was for beads or books on jewellery crafting or baking - and when it came to books he normally tended to opt to borrowing them out of the library over buying them.
It had been weird being up in the City when she generally made the trip down to her parents, but a few of her friends from back in her Sovereign Heights days had been up visiting their parents and they had all made plans to meet up and have a party to see in the New Year - which was a good excuse as any to hit the shops to see if she could pick up a few additions to her wardrobe as well as a nice bottle of wine or something–
And whilst her friends had told her that she could bring her cousin along, that he would be welcome in a more the merrier type of way, Saffron had found herself hesitating because she figured that Arian might just have plans with his boyfriend this year.
She was still dithering as she came across a couple of dresses that at 50% were pretty much a steal and had also indulged in a some heels, because she couldn't buy just the dresses.
She did also pick up a couple of books on baking that she thought that Arian might like and had been contemplating making a trip to the cake shop that she had spotted tucked away in a corner of the mall for a much needed sweet 'pick-me-up', but as she was turning to retrace her steps she spotted a shop with some of the champagne that had receiving rave reviews - she drifted closer, the buzz of people clustered around the shop suddenly understandable when she saw the 60% off full price deal that it was being offered at - because it put the deal on the dresses in the shade–
And whilst her credit card was probably not going to like her, Saffron knew that she couldn't leave it - had to at least try to get her hands on a bottle and maybe two - because whilst her cousin was teetotal, she certainly wasn't and what better way was there to see in the new year than champagne?
She had managed to get a single bottle and it had made her very, very popular when she had turned up at the party with it to hand and maybe she had indulged in a glass or two too much, but the champagne had been a really nice one and well worthy of all the reviews.
Although in the morning after Saffron found that she had had cause to regret maybe indulging in quite so much alcohol when she found out that she had spent a large part of the evening flirting with the ex that she had dumped a couple of months back and someone had put pictures of it on Facebook.
And whilst there was better things to wake up in 2018 proper to, at least she had toasted in the new year in style.
