Who knew fruit cake could be so good? A local bakery claims to have perfected their recipe and is giving away free samples. The good news? It’s delicious. The bad news? A few hours after ingestion, something strange kicks in. Suddenly, everything seems so colorful and bright. The music sounds so much better, everything tastes so much better—and then, it stops, and everything is an awful blend of everything. Lights are too bright, smells and tastes are overwhelming, music sounds like noise. You’re sick enough to throw up everything in your stomach—which is good, because within a few hours of that you finally start to feel normal again.

One fruitcake. It was what they had decided to dare each other to eat. Tom looked at the fruitcake, Jason looked at the fruitcake, but neither one tried to take the first bite. Tom looked at his little brother and smirked. “Well Jason, how about you try it? I’ll take a bite after you do.” Jason sent an annoyed look towards his older brother. “Look Tom, we already said we would both try it as a dare. I’m not going to wait for you for a couple of hours before you try it.” He replied, trying to hide a smile. Neither of them really wanted to do this. Fruitcake was so gross. It was like Jim Gaffigan said, it looked like someone just scraped everything off the counter and made it into a… thing. It was often wondered by the two brothers as to why the item even existed. Sure, they could have looked the information up on the internet, but they supposed it was some poor people’s dish that had gained popularity now because of how disgusting it was.

Neither of them had planned on getting it. They had only gone to the local bakery to get some cookies and other items perhaps, but the fruitcake was practically shoved into their hands against their wishes, and they brought it back to Tom’s apartment. At first, he was just going to dump it, after all, no one should be subjected to that, but as brothers do, they had decided that eating it would be a great sort of dare and so they were now staring at it, wondering who would take the first piece.

Jason looked at his older brother. “Shouldn’t you be setting an example for me? You’re the older sibling after all.” Tom grimaced. His little brother was getting too smart for his own good. It made Tom both proud and annoyed. He sighed. “Look, I’ll cut a couple of small pieces off of it, and then we can try those.” He said, before grabbing the knife that had been laying near them and cutting off a couple of bite-sized pieces. Jason nodded, and the two of them grabbed one, both trying not to get sick at just the sight and the smell of it. And then, they both took a bite.

Opposite of what they expected, it was delicious! But, not delicious enough to actually go for another bite. “It’s… better than I thought it would be.” Tom said, chewing on his piece. Jason nodded, agreeing with his brother. “Yeah, not what I expected. But not really something I would still want to have if I was offered it again.” And that seemed to be the end of it! Tom dumped the plate into the trash, and cleaned the plate and knife.

It wasn’t until a few hours later that something started to go wrong. It was a good thing that Tom and Jason were on the couch at this point, because it felt like they were having some sort of epileptic episode! Things were too bright! What they had been listening too started to sound strange and everything was magnified! It was like they were on some sort of horrible acid high or something!

And suddenly, their stomachs decided to turn on them. Jason rushed to the bathroom, and it was at that point that Tom really wished he had a second one, but instead he had to go with the sink. It was a horrible couple of hours as they both had to stay near the respective vomit receptacles, until finally, finally everything was out of their stomachs and they felt like they could actually stand again. Tom collapsed on the kitchen floor, and Jason soon walked out of the bathroom, joining them. They were both too pale and looked a bit like death, but at least it seemed to be over. Tom let out a large sigh. “That… that stuff is forever banned from being anywhere near me ever again.” Jason nodded in agreement. Even if they were dared again, there would be no way he would take it.
