Caroling has been a tradition for years, so it’s really no surprise when you hear a soft chorus from outside. What is a surprise is the fact that it’s three in the morning, and the moment they start singing you feel a chill in the air. It’s a song you’ve heard a hundred times before, but something about this version makes you go cold. If you move to the window, you will find no carolers, but the song is loud enough that you know you should be able to see them. They sing one song, and then there is silence. An eerie chill lingers, and your dreams are haunted by strange voices. You’ll probably never be able to hear that song again without feeling a chill.
Christmas music wasn't entirely a staple at the Klein household, especially these days, but her father did have a habit of turning the radio on at night to play some so that it filtered through the downstairs of the house. Gave it that homey, Christmas time feel that everyone seemed to love about the season. Not that Melody didn't love it, per se. She just might like it a bit more if they weren't living in a house that wasn't too big for a family of three.
Sure it had worked out when she was younger and there was always a housefull of people staying over for the holidays but now? There wasn't a point.
Still the one thing they'd always looked forward to during the season, especially the closer to Christmas it got, were the carolers. Though there didn't seem to be as many anymore, there were a couple that made their rounds and Melody loved to listen to them. Always made sure to tip them as well, they deserved it for their craft after all.
Tonight, however... was a little different. Up late wrapping gifts, balcony doors open just a bit to allow some of the cool air into the room, she knew it was well after midnight when the sound of voices singing could be heard. From outside no less! Brown eyes immediately moved to the clock on her bedside table for the time and she frowned.
Three in the morning was definitely too late for carolers, even if it was one of her favourite songs. They weren't horribly loud, however, so attempts were made to ignore them in favor of finshing her gift wrapping. Except as they moved in to really singing the song there was a chill down her spine that promised of not great things. That sort of ethereal cold that she remembered feeling around Halloween when she first got to meet Themisto.
Setting her project aside, Melody moved to her balcony to tell them to leave only to find no one there.
The cold of the air wasn't the only thing that stung her chest as she sucked in a breath, making sure to look all around before accepting that there was singing but there was no one there. It was just like Halloween again and she hated it.
With a single turn on her heel, the blonde moved back into her room and shut the door. "Nope," a heavy breath of a sigh as her eyes closed for just a moment. Halloween was one thing but to affect Christmas?? She wasn't doing this, she was just going to enjoy the Holiday and ignore the spooky stuff.
Pushing away from the door to move back for her bed, the song came to an end and Melody froze. Silence and more silence, no more songs to be heard from the carolers that didn't exist. Her hands moved immediately to grab her phone and send some texts to the first person who came to mind. Not that she expected a response, just sending something out would be enough to soothe her. Sort of.
Added bonus of if something happened to her then someone knew what had happened.
Just had carolers at three in the morning?? Sang one song and then silence. I'm sure it's nothing...
or that weird Destiny City thing that Destiny City has going on...
I'm so sorry if I wake you with these. I just needed to send something to someone and you were the first to come to mind. Merry Christmas. <3
Feeling a little guilty as she set her phone down, though there was peace at the knowledge of the texts being sent, Melody put herself back down on the bed to finish her wrapping so she could finally go to bed. She really shouldn't have put this off for so long.
Of course when she woke up the next morning she almost found herself wishing she'd stayed up the whole night. Weird dreams with odd voices, that almost sounded like the carolers if she'd thought about it, though nothing she could remember. But there was that unsettling feeling that remained and it was almost like the nightmares she could never remember after the "organ ring" incident. She didn't like it at all, if she were honest.
More so when she walked down the stairs and the song she'd heard last night was playing on the radio. The chill down her spine returned and she resisted the urge to turn the radio off.
Merry Christmas indeed.
