Pronunciation: Eel-e-a Race: Wind Gender: Female Future Class: Minstrel (Drums) Significant Other: N/A Parents: Ninati & Brisco Siblings: Reyna (2 yrs older), Sindri (4 yrs younger) & Brynja (7 yrs younger) Children: None Physical Description: A fairly average young woman with delicate features and modest curves.
Personality: Refined Elia has been innately aware of her elevated social status, and what is expected of her since her youth. Due to this upbringing, she's become a very proper, dignified young lady. She walks as straight as she can without showing much haste (or any discomfort, should it be tired or ill), makes direct eye contact, and makes a point to use proper titles at all times. She absolutely refuses to call anyone by their given name, at least, until a relationship has been established between them where she feels comfortable doing so. Elia is also usually very modest, both in her dress and the way she speaks with others. She’s uncomfortable being too open with others, preferring to keep most of her private thoughts to herself.
Studious Thanks to her family’s wealth, Elia has grown into a very well read, knowledgeable young woman. She’s being groomed by her parents to either succeed one or the other, or at least, to assist her siblings in it. However, just because she’s been taught how to read, doesn’t mean she’s spending all of her time studying numbers. Elia has a fairly large collection of musical tomes, covering the construction of drums, as well as their origin and hundreds of sheets containing songs for her to practice.
Idealist Elia is a daydreamer. She adores staying up late into the night, reading romantic stories by candle light, as scandalous as it is. She dreams of going on an adventure of her own, but on her own terms, that is. Elia knows that there is a certain amount of risk involved with things of this nature, which makes it all the more appealing to her, which often leads to her being caught staring out the window, without really focusing on anything. Sometimes she’ll see a caravan and imagine herself riding along with them, playing a tune to inspire their trip, and while she rarely voices these dreams to her sister, when she does, it’s as if a lid to another world is opened. All of it just comes pouring out all at once, sweeping Elia into a world of dreams.

History
Elia is the second of four children, and the only one to be adopted. Her parents, Ninati and Brisco, are both from old money households that built a reputation in Zena with their shrewd business deals. Her father’s family oversaw the export of lumber from Mez, while her mother, oversees trade deals surrounding jewelry. The two were married young, and wished to start a family as soon as possible, though the circumstances surrounding their wish weren’t exactly ‘common’.
Elia knew her birth mother had been poor, but happy. There had always been music and drums; beautiful, exciting drums that could pound out a rhythm into her very soul. She remembered dancing under a dark sky in the warmer weather, but it was the cold, the crippling chill that took her mother away from her. Ninati said that Brisco had been overseeing a shipment of supplies from Sauti when several of his workers found the body of a traveler. They brought Elia to him, and though the child looked just as pitiful as her mother, she still lived. He saw to her care personally, doting on the little one as much as he could, before returning home. In her fear and distress, Elia grew attached to Brisco and Ninati could see that separating them would cause more harm than good. So, the pair unanimously decided to care for her themselves, and took the little Elia into their family.
She grew up knowing she was ‘different’, but mixed families of their kind were so commonplace in Zidel that it was rarely a problem. Occasionally some children would mock her for being so out of place, but her elder sister, Reyna, was always quick to put them in their place. The girls grew up to be as thick as any blood related sisters, and together, they’ve taken Zidel by storm. While she’s far calmer than Reyna, she still loves her sister dearly, as she does their younger siblings.
Occasionally she’ll think about the mother she lost when passing by minstrel’s on the street. Dressed in fine cloth and fur, no one would be able to call her the daughter of a pauper and yet, that nomadic life calls to her. Elia can’t exactly say why, but the call has become stronger as she ages, and while her parents find her interest in music nice enough as a hobby, any talk of it becoming a full time profession has been shut down. It’s been enough of a deterrent for her not to press the matter, but as time goes on she has to wonder what life will hold for her.

[Currently played age; 16]
”You’ll be fine. Just go out there, and show them how talented you really are.”
Reyna’s words of encouragement helped to calm Elia’s nerves as she looked on into a room full of Zidel’s elite. Her parents were hosting a grand gathering, something that had been planned for months and her mother had requested she play a piece for the group. It was no secret that the pairs adoptive daughter was musically gifted; her vocals were passable, but with her drum she excelled. There was a passion there, drawn forth from years of lost memories that seemed to thrive in the far reaches of her mind. She knew a woman lived there, buried beneath layers of a happy life in Zena, one that she would have never been able to give, and yet...Elia wanted to honor her that night.
She just hoped her parents wouldn’t realize what she was doing.
Taking a deep breath, and releasing it slowly, Elia walked into the grand hall with her head held high. She had a grace about her that had been cultivated by years of etiquette training alongside Reyna. Blue skin or not, she was just as much Zenan as anyone in this room, though her clothing choice betrayed her noble house. Her father wouldn’t be pleased with the amount of skin she was showing, tame as her wardrobe was, and her mother wouldn’t be pleased with the Sauti inspired colors. If they were upset, however, any irritation would be drowned out by the light clapping thrown her way once the group realized their performer was setting up.
Some days she felt just like that; a performer. Some trinket for her mother to bring out at parties, but deep down she knew better. It was no different for Reyna, who even over the crowd, Elia could see being passed off from one perspective suitor to the next. She smiled and laughed, just like she was supposed to, but Reyna didn’t care for any of them once she saw the change in crowd. When Elia’s nerves reared up again, the universe sent her a sign and she could see her sister waving to her, silently sending her good luck vibes.
She couldn’t see her parents at all, and at the moment, she couldn’t figure out if that was good or bad. They would be proud of her for doing her best, but if her outfit of choice would annoy them, then her song choice would hurt them. They tried, they really did, but anytime she tried playing the song her mother would get a distant look on her face, and her father had explained more than once how sad it made her.
”She’s just scared that you’ll leave her one day. That you don’t...want her as your mother.” But couldn’t she have both? Wasn’t it possible for her to have a piece of her old life, to help her in the new? She loved Ninati as much, if not more, than if the woman had birthed her, but she couldn’t forget about the woman who had died to care for her, either.
And the only way she knew to honor both was through the one thing she loved more than all else; music. Elia settled herself onto a cushion before the assembly, placed her drum before her, and started to play. Once she’d built up a soothing rhythm she started to sing;
“Beautiful Star of Kesris Shining afar through shadows dim Giving the light to those who long have gone Guiding the seers on their way Unto the place where Bergchi lay Beautiful Star of Kesris, shine on
Oh Beautiful Star (Beautiful, Beautiful Star) Of Kesris (Star of Kesris) Shine upon us until the glory dawns Give us the light to light the way Unto the land of perfect day Beautiful Star of Kesris, shine on”
To Elia’s surprise several members of the assembly had chimed in to sing along side her. The song had taken several variations over the years, some of which made it more ‘Zenan’ so have the completely iceling group singing along with her, to these words, touched her. Especially when she finally noticed Ninati...and saw her singing too.
Her face was conflicted, saddened but also a little...tender as she looked on at her daughter. Elia’s hands tapped out even louder on her drum, her heart soaring just knowing that her mother wasn’t upset with her. She didn’t know if she truly understood or if she was just resigned to the situation, but at the very least she was trying, which meant the world to Elia.
”Beautiful Star the hope of light Guiding the pilgrims through the night Over the mountains 'til the break of dawn Into the light of perfect day It will give out a lovely ray Beautiful Star of Kesris, shine on
Beautiful Star the hope of rest For the redeemed, the good and the blessed Yonder in glory when the war is won Bergchi is now that star divine Brighter and brighter she will shine Beautiful Star of Kesris, shine on”
