Quote: Caroling has been a tradition for years, so it’s really no surprise when you hear a soft chorus from outside. What is a surprise is the fact that it’s three in the morning, and the moment they start singing you feel a chill in the air. It’s a song you’ve heard a hundred times before, but something about this version makes you go cold. If you move to the window, you will find no carolers, but the song is loud enough that you know you should be able to see them. They sing one song, and then there is silence. An eerie chill lingers, and your dreams are haunted by strange voices. You’ll probably never be able to hear that song again without feeling a chill.

Ding, dong, ding dong.
Ding, dong, ding, dong.
It was the sounds of what appeared singing that dragged her out from slumber as voices from outside intermingled into a soft chorus.
A hand reached up almost automatically to rub at her eyes, as the other fumbled for the clock that sat on the nearby dresser, but missed sending the small alarm clock tumbling to the rug that lined the floor with a dull clatter.
Christmas is here bringing good cheer...
The voices continued on as she leaned over to awkwardly to reach for it, fingers fumbling over the plastic for a moment before managing to get a firm enough grip to scoop it up.
Ding, dong, ding dong that is their song, with joyful ring...
Lifting the alarm clock Saffron brought it up to eye level so that she could see the display, only to find herself just staring at it for a long moment and then she dropped the clock to her lap and rubbed at her eyes again because surely she had read the display wrong.
It happened - she was tired and had to be in work early - and the clock display did not read three o'clock in the morning.
Ding, dong, ding dong.
Ding, dong, ding, dong.
Only when she finally reached down to pick up the clock it did - or rather it must have done a minute or so ago because the digital display of the clock was now reading three o'one–
With joyful ring all carolling...
It was three o'one in the morning and unbelievable as it was it appeared that someone - well make that a whole group of someones - had decided to have what sounded very much to her tired brain like some kind of impromptu carol concert outside her apartment–
And whilst it was true that people out carolling wasn't really that uncommon, not at this time of year, they generally tended to be considerate to do it at normal times of day - normal times that were not say three or so in the bloody morning.
Oer hill and dale telling their tale...
Someone from one of the other apartments banged a window, suggesting that she wasn't the only one who had been woken up by the singing, but it didn't seem to have any effect on the singers as they continued on with their chorus and whilst their voices were probably lovely and all, right now - at this time of morning - it all just seemed like noise to Saffron's tired brain–
Merry, merry, merry Christmas!
And she couldn't help the shiver as she dragged herself out of bed because it was colder than she'd thought, also Saffron put it down to the fact that the heating must have gone off at some point as she reached out to grab her fluffiest dressing gown before stalking over to the window.
Ding, dong, ding, dong. Dong!
Only to find herself standing there blinking in disbelief because the street outside was empty.
She rubbed at her eyes wondering if she was missing something because she could still hear the voices, but when she stared down at the street again it was clearly empty and - if the snow covered sidewalk was anything to go by - had been empty for quite some time.
On, on they send, on without end...
And she wasn't sure how long she had been standing there glancing down at the clearly empty street because the alarm clock was still on the bed, but it seemed that the song was finally, finally coming to an end.
Dong!
But even though Saffron knew the carol of the bells well enough to know that the song had been coming to an end, that final 'dong' had still been enough to make her jump and the sudden silence after the singing was downright eerie.
Turning away from the window Saffron wrapped her arms around herself with a shiver, because even with her dressing gown and bed socks it was cold, and headed towards the kitchen.
She'd put on some hot chocolate and put the heating back on to chase the chill away she decided to herself, maybe add some cream and marshmallows to the hot chocolate and some chocolate shavings if there were any still left.
Even despite that however Saffron found hard to get back to sleep when she finally settled back in her bed to try and grab some more shut eye–
And her dreams, such as they were, were haunted by the sound of ding dongs.
