Physical Description: Of average height and build [somewhere about 5'4" or 5'5"], the easiest way to pick Rae out of a crowd is her bright red hair, which is long enough to be pulled into a ponytail and often is. Her hazel eyes are sharp and attentive, her skin light and easily burned. Pockmarked skin on her cheeks, nose, and shoulders often get covered with makeup. There's a small scar through her upper lip from her last attempt to get near a rowdy dragonet. No matter what shape she's in, her nails are always cut short and clean.
Personality: Though she never willingly talks about it, it's easy to see Raelin has a noble's bearing: the sharp gaze, the unflinching hands, the aura of an alert hawk. It's exactly that upbringing that she can't relate to, however, turned off by years of political intrigue and little courtly games that drove her mad. She prefers honesty to the point of bluntness and returns it in kind, desperate to hide her inbred sense of class-ism by treating everyone equally: like s**t.

Not that she can't socialize. She'll happily do so, albeit with a quick wit and a dry sense of humor, as if everyone around her is some degree of stupid. (That pride is something very little can hide.) It's her defense mechanism against being treated any differently as well as her excuse to make people hate nobles more--they should, the majority that she knows are all pricks and primadonnas. It makes for an odd mix of a person, one who doesn't enjoy her own background but still acts as though her individual self should be held in high regard. (Again: can't relate.)

Raelin works off a meritocracy system: only capable people are worth spending time with. This is why she works herself to the bone to live up to this expectation and why she developed a slightly neurotic need to make sure everything is done perfectly. Relaxing is for the lazy, sleep for closers. Her idea of fun is throwing herself on her bed at the end of a day and burning several chapters through whatever novel she happens to have. (Most are romantic in nature--she would die if anyone learned.)

History: Third daughter to a minor holder and his mistress, Raelin never had anything special expected of her beyond the usual: don't sully the family image. Of course, everything else expected of her wasn't overt, and she learned quickly what these shadow rules were. (You are lesser than the true blood. You're a b*****d child. You're a reminder.) For a while, she thrived off of making a little anarchy just to upset the delicate balance. It wasn't as if they were really highborn in the end, right?

When she was old enough to work, Raelin was immediately dropped off at Highreach. The pretense was for her to work as an apprentice under a healer, but she knew what it really meant: get out. Thus she worked hard to learn her craft until a dragonrider collected her as a candidate. She's spent several years now waiting for an egg, and it's starting to wear on her.
