Harmotome was wandering around the offices within Negaspace, trying to locate a General. With the holidays, it seemed a lot were out, and she guessed that made sense. More people to drain and yank, and a lot of people had families to be with. She didn't...but whatever! She had her quota to turn in, and while she usually handed it off to Aurostibite, she couldn't locate him currently. She thought she recalled that he had a girlfriend, so...it was very likely they had holiday plans? The lieutenant stopped as she came across an office that was occupied, and a grin pulled at her lips. Oh, finally! She stood at the doorway, raised her free fist (the other held star seeds), and banged it against the door frame. "Yo!" She called. "I am here to turn in quota!" AMItotic If I need to change anything, please let me know!

As it so happened, Zircon was one of the few generals with a family to return to for the holidays. Somewhere back on Earth, she had no doubt that the Ellis family had spared no expense in pulling out all the stops for a holiday extravaganza at her father's homestead, but she had little interest in taking part, not when there was research to be done. With luck and plenty of elbow grease, she expected to file for her next grant by the end of the year, so that she could begin 2018 with the resources she would need to succeed. Her proposal was bold, and it required energy for tests, starseeds. If she could not use them from the stores, then she would be required to harvest them herself, and what a bother that would be.
She found herself pulled away from the tidy notes at her desk by a rapping at the door, her eyes sharp on the lieutenant brazen enough to interrupt her reading. "...Of course," Zircon clipped in response, choosing not to stand from the barricade of her desk. Already, she was reticent about this unfamiliar lieutenant--in her experience, anyone who used yo unironically was not to be trusted.
"I need your name and superior officer," she added, reaching for her tablet and thumbing through files on the database. If she was going to be relegated to quota work, she would at least see that it was properly credited.

Harmotome entered the office since the general had acknowledged her, her lips quirking up in amusement. She didn't know why exactly she liked the stern types, but she did. She stopped on the other side of Zircon's desk, across from the general, and rested her free hand on her hip as she waited. "Harmotome!" She informed the woman, and then frowned. "Ah. I am not certain of my superior office. I usually hand quota to General Aurostibite, but he is out right now, and lately I have been reporting to Pyrophanite. So. One of those two?" Either way, they were both higher ranking than her, so she was sure that would be just fine.

Zircon's expression went dry. Recruits these days--how did this lieutenant not know her superior officer? And then she said Pyrophanite, and her eyes narrowed.
"...Captain Pyrophanite told me he had no lieutenants," Zircon quipped, glancing down at her tablet. It didn't take much effort to find Harmotome's file, and after a cursory read of the lieutenant's information, she switched into admin mode so she could properly record the incoming quota.
"For future reference, your superior is General Aurostibite in the database, as he was your recruitment officer," Zircon said flatly, gesturing to the open space of her desk. "Which is to your benefit, really, Pyrophanite needs to be in charge of people like he needs a hole in the head. If you'll put your quota here, please."

"You know Pyrophanite?" The lieutenant asked, her posture perking up with considerable interest and her expression nothing short of gleeful. "Ah! Understood!" In regards to Aurostibite, anyways. When prompted, she dropped her quota onto the space Zircon indicated, and now that both of her hands were free, she placed both hands on the surface to lean on it, laughing. "You have not happened to see him today, have you?" She asked, eagerly. "I vas trying to find him, but I think he is hiding from me!" Her grin split her face from ear to ear, taking delight in the fact. "He says I annoy the s**t out of him! Ha!"

Zircon took the quota with one hand, counting each piece before sending it away to subspace. She tapped at her screen several times, but paused just shy of logging the quota, her head swiveling up to look at the lieutenant with undivided attention.
"No, I haven't," she stated plainly, but already the gears in her head were turning, considering the possibilities unfolding before her. Nothing Zircon did ever seemed to get through Pyrophanite's thick skull, but perhaps she was just using the wrong approach.
"Harmotome, was it?" Zircon leaned on one hand, watching the lieutenant with a focused gaze. "Do you remember exactly what it was that annoyed him?" It was incredibly important that Zircon know. For science, of course.

"Ya." She replied in response to her name, and it was with a grin that she answered another " Ya." She held up a hand, and then started to count on her fingers. "First, I vould not let him nap under heat lamps in peace, then I asked him vhy he vas half-youma, but he did not vant to answer, so I kept asking, and then he told me I was raised on a barn, so I corrected his use of language and then---" She went on to list some more reasons, counting them off on her fingers, and well, she ran out of fingers as she lead up to now, and this meeting with Zircon. "I find him amusing!" She told the General cheerfully, both of her hands now resting as fists on her hips

Zircon listened with rapt attention, pausing only to consider if she should be taking notes. But no, these weren't difficult qualities to have, just different from the one she possessed--and the lieutenant obviously had thick skin not to be concerned with Pyrophanite's own foul mouth.
"At least someone does," Zircon responded flatly, shaking her head. "He went into the Rift without backup and was attacked by a youma, which is how he's in his current condition. Think of it as a cautionary tale."
Gripping the arms of her chair, the general slowly pulled herself to standing, crossing the room with a stilted walk to reach for her bookshelf. It was only then that her prosthetic was visible, steel colored and too thin to be flesh. "You know, it's important that Pyrophanite learn the value of teamwork. I think you should keep checking up on him." Neither of these statements were technically false, but it was easy to see the lack of goodwill in the general's eyes as she thumbed over her reading selection, choosing a green notebook towards the front of the filing system.
"It'd be worth your time, of course," Zircon shrugged, hugging the notebook across her chest. "I could see to it that your quota is accounted for while you keep tabs on the captain." Her smile was cold, thin-lipped and devious. Nothing Zircon could ever do would get under Pyrophanite's skin the way he had mastered getting under hers, but Zircon didn't have to do things on her own anymore. She was a general, she could outsource her personal errands to smart, capable people with brash voices. Like Harmotome.

Harmotome blinked at this tidbit of information. "He did?" She asked, and tilted her head. "Vhen I ask, he said he got bit protecting his best friend." But maybe that also tied into what the General just said? Maybe his friend wasn't the proper rank, either. As Zircon got up from her desk and moved, the lieutenant was finally able to see the fact that one of her legs as a prosthetic, but she didn't comment, and her gaze didn't linger, either. Things happened, and just because someone lost a limb didn't mean they still couldn't live a full life. It deserved no pity. What Zircon was saying though had the lieutenant blinking again, this time in surprise. Was she... No... But... yes. Harmotome only looked flabbergasted for a moment before her lips started to curl into a conniving smile. The woman was more or less giving her orders to harass the Captain? And fulfilling her quota? Well. "I think that sounds like a very reasonable order, General." Harmotome purred with glee, her lips stretching into a grin now. "And I vould be honored to carry it out."

Zircon hadn't heard about the presence of a second officer there at the time of the attack, but it didn't matter much--any friend of Pyrophanite's was likely to be just as infuriating. "Well, his best friend wasn't very good for backup now, were they?" she asked dryly, her expression unimpressed until Harmotome agreed to her terms, at which point she offered a small satisfied nod.
"Good," Zircon hummed, thumbing through the notebook in her hands before tossing it on her desk for later perusal. "I'll see to it that your quotas are accounted for, and if there's anything you might need for any of your projects, you just let me know."
Arms neatly folded, she considered the lieutenant before her, and then her lips curled softly into a smile. "Is there anything else you need from me, lieutenant?"lucyal SOB sorry about the delay, we can probably wrap in the next post or so if you'd like!!

"Right." Harmotome agreed, and while utterly gleeful and delighted with this opportunity that had dropped into her lap, also couldn't help but feel some disbelief. It was just so good. Almost too good. She actually liked filling her quotas, but now that that part was taken care of, she really could just dedicate all her time to harassing the s**t out of Pyrophanite. Amazing. She shook her head. "No...not at the moment, but if that changes, I vill let you know! So far, I annoy him simply by existing in his proximity." She grinned widely at Zircon, and even went so far as to give the woman an honest and respectful salute. "No, General, and I vill be in touch!" Her hand fell to give one last wave, and with her quota turned in, the lieutenant spun on her heel and strolled out of the office. The gears in her brain were turning, and with a lot of free time to suddenly burn, there was one snake Captain in for a rude surprise.
